My name is Dr. Kitzmiller and I havesleep apnea. I started snoring when Iwas in my late 20s. Over the years mysnoring got worse and I would wakemyself up with a gasp or a snort.

My wife, Lori, was increasingly hav-ing to wake me up to stop snoring orstart breathing. I finally decided thatafter 23 years we bothdeserved a quiet night’ssleep.

I really thought that all Ihad was a snoring prob-lem. But I learned that snor-ing can often be a symptom of alife-threatening condition calledObstructive Sleep Apnea. Untreated, sleep apnea can lead to high blood pres-sure, diabetes, heart attack or stroke! Ischeduled an overnight sleep study andthe report revealed that not only was Isnoring, but I quit breathing 28 timesper hour! I tried wearing a CPAPmachine but struggled with the mask, hose, sinus issues and limited sleeping

positions.I learned that untreated sleep apnea

could shorten my lifespan by up to 18years! I knew I had to do something tosave my life so I enrolled in specializedtraining to provide myself and mypatients a CPAP alternative called anOral Appliance. It is a medical device

that fits over your teeth andholds the lower jaw forward, keeping the airway openwhile you sleep.

My wife and I now bothenjoy quiet, healthy sleep

because of my Oral Appliance. Andthe hundreds of patients we’ve treatedover the years rave about finally findinga snoring and sleep apnea treatmentthat’s comfortable and effective!

Give our office a call at 513-248-8848to schedule your complimentary consul-tation to see how Oral ApplianceTherapy could be an option for you too!

Whether you’re a first-time parent oryou’ve faced these questions before, here are some safety guidelines to keepin mind so you can provide your babywith the ideal sleep environment:

Mattress and sheets – Place yourbaby in a safety-approved crib with afirm mattress. When selecting a mattressfor the crib, a firmer option is preferredover one that is too soft and flexible.Make sure that the mattress fits securelyin the crib. You should not be able to fitmore than two fingers between the mat-tress and the crib side. A quality, firmmattress will help keep your child sleep-ing safely and comfortably.

Bonus tip: Before purchasing a crib, visit www.cpsc.gov to make sure thecrib you selected has not been recalled.

In addition to a firm mattress, thecrib sheet should fit snug so it stays putwhen your baby is in the crib. A sheetthat is too loose may be a suffocationhazard.

Crib bumper safety – A crib bumperthat wraps around the inside of the cribwill help protect your baby’s arms andlegs from becoming caught between cribslats possibly resulting in bruised orbroken limbs, or the development of

neuropathy. A traditional crib bumperthat is plush, pillowy and made withnon-breathable fabrics increases the risksof suffocation. While it might seem par-ents are forced to choose between suffo-cation or entanglement risks, there is asafer alternative that addresses both con-cerns.

Keep clutter out of crib - For mostparents, all those cute stuffed animalsand soft blankets might seem a naturalfit for the crib, but unfortunately they allpose suffocation risks.

Toys and stuffed animals are best

Safe sleep for babies:

Safety is a top priority forevery parent. When it comes to

sleep, giving your baby a safesleeping environment is

extremely important, but eventhe best caregivers can overlook

small things that can haveserious risks.

What every parentneeds to know When it comes to sleep, giving your baby a safe sleeping

environment is extremely important.

Preventive health is thebest thing that you can dofor yourself now that candetermine the future ofyour health and well-being. Making your den-tal-check ups and clean-ings a regular part of yourhealth routine will notonly benefit your overallhealth but are essential inthe early detection of can-cerous and pre-cancerousconditions in the mouth.

The American DentalAssociation states that 60

percent of the US popula-tion sees a dentist everyyear and studies showthat currently less than 15percent of those who visita dentist regularly, reporthaving had an oral cancerscreening. Just doing“opportunistic” cancerscreening of the existingpatient population whichvisits a dental office everyday, would yield tens ofthousands of opportuni-ties to catch oral cancer inits early stages.

Mortenson FamilyDental offers a free oralcancer screening at yourfirst visit. As we continueto apply and use the mostadvanced dental tech-niques in our offices, weare introducing theVELscope system, the No.1 technology for helpingdentists detect oral cancerand other oral diseases.VELScope is an enhancedoral assessment that isable to detect lesionsunseen by the naked eye

in just two minutes withno rinses, stains or dis-comfort. It is the firstdevice cleared by the FDAand Health Canada tohelp surgeons determinethe appropriate surgicalmargin, helping themremove all targeted dis-eased tissue.

Be proactive aboutyour dental health! Comesee us at MortensonFamily Dental and ask usabout VELscope.

Preventive health can determine your future

Most of us at one timehave developed painfulingrown toenails.Sometimes we are luckyand are able to cut out the

corner of the toenail athome doing “bathroomsurgery.” Other times weare not as lucky, and apainful, red draining nail

corner occurs that can lastfor weeks, causing shoesto rub against the toe andcreate pain and disability.

The physicians atCenters for Foot andAnkle Care are able to fixyour toenail problem per-manently with a shortoffice procedure and haveyou walk out in regularshoes, without missingany of your normal activi-ties.

The procedure, called apartial matrixectomy, isperformed under localanesthesia and removesthe deep, ingrown portionof the nail.

Next, by applying anapplication of a safechemical agent, the deepnail corners are cauterizedand no longer are able togrow the painful nail cor-ner again. A simple band-age is placed over the toeand the patient usesbandaids for the next fewweeks while the toe heals.

Call the nearest officefor an appointment withone of our Foot and AnkleCare Specialists.

Pool care expert Sam Ionna, of S.I.Pool Care, said fall is actually the besttime for pool renovations.

“Doing renovations in the fall ensuresthat you’ll get into your pool next sum-mer when you want to get into it – notwhen unreliable spring weather saysyou can,” Sam said. You’ll also avoid aprice increase too.”

Whether you’re looking for a newliner, to resurface, need concrete or deckwork, or need equipment changes, S.I.Pool Care, a family-owned and operatedbusiness, is the place to call.

You can trust their expert advice, they’ll do the best job and offer you thebest price.

In addition to renovations, now isalso the time to start thinking about

when you want to close your pool. “If you want to choose the date you

will close your pool, call now,” Samwarned.

A professional pool closing is the bestand safest option.

“It’s important to close your poolproperly,” Sam said. “If you don’t do itproperly, don’t put antifreeze in yourlines or don’t get all the water outthere’s a good chance that your lineswill freeze and break. You can causeyourself a lot of problems, so it’s impor-tant to have your pool professionallyclosed.”

Think back to the worststorms that have ragedover your home. Strongwinds, dangerous light-ning, and pounding hailare bad enough whileinside the house; can youimagine what it would belike on your roof?! Thephrase “having a roofover your head” takes ona whole new meaning andsense of importance ifthose shingles begin tofail.

Replacing your home’sroofing is a big invest-ment, so how do youknow when it’s time? Thetwo obvious signs aremissing shingles andbrown ceiling stains, butthere are some things youcan look for to prevent

early damage. MissyWare, who has the distinc-tion of being a woman ina man’s industry, has acompany aptly named; ANew Rooftime.

She says that one signto watch for, is the wear-ing away of the granulesfrom the surface of theshingles. She said,” Thereis no need to get up onthe roof to inspect theshingles, simply look intothe gutters. If you seemore than a dusting of atiny rock like particle, calla roofer! Those smalllimestone chips are thetop layer that gives yourshingles its color and UVsun protection.”

Another indication ofshingle aging is a failure

of the top layer. Youmight begin to see someof the mat appear throughthe black of the asphalt, oryou may become aware ofblistering, cracking, orsplitting of the layers. These signs can be harderto spot from the groundand should be part of anannual examination of theroofing from above.

As these warning signsappear, it’s time to have areputable roofer make afree written inspection. Her company offers a pro-fessional roof conditionassessment, an estimate ofthe remaining life (if any)your roof has and evalu-ates repairing versusreplacing the roof this.Missy adds:“Rememberthat seeing is believing. Agood roofer conducts

thorough roof top inspec-tions and brings downcolor digital pictures toshow you the roof’s truecondition.”

Homeowners beware;contrary to popular belief, there is no licensing forlocal roofers!

Tips for finding a betterquality roofer include, asking everyone youknow who they haveused. You might uncovera little known professionaland be steered clear of anexpensive mistake by hir-ing the high dollar TVand big ad yellow pagestype.

Consider joining aservice such as Angie’sList. For less than theprice of a night out, youcan access hundreds oflocal contractor reviewsposted by homeownerssharing the good, the bad,and the ugly experiencesthey have had. Meeteveryone you invite out toyour home and trust yourinstincts!

Greg Lykens fromRooftime adds, “You donot have to know any-thing about roofing tojudge information andcompanies’ credentials.Look at the roofer’s truckand equipment; see if theyarrive on time. Considerthe roofer himself. Do notallow yourself to be pres-sured or talked into doinganything if it feels too fastor like pressure. Andabove all; do not putdown a deposit! Whenyou hold the paymentback till the job ends, youhave control over the finallook and clean-up of yourhome.”

Asphalt roofing shin-gles get their name fromthe fact that they aremade up of layers of dif-ferent materials. The basicingredients are fiberglass,

asphalt and limestonegranules for color. Higherwarranty rated (30-Lifetime) shingles willhave more of these layersthan the basic 25-yearvariety. Better shingleswill have a 10 percentcopper granule blend toprevent those ugly blackstains from growingacross your new roof.Rooftime exclusivelyinstalls the OwensCorning line of roofingproducts, with algaeresistant protection.

Shingles today can beexpected to have an effec-tive lifespan of 25 to 50years if installed by aqualified roofer, using allof the needed roof systemcomponents. A roof sys-tem will use, aluminumtrim flashing, ice guard,30 No. felt paper, ventila-tion and metal flashing atcritical areas such aswhere two roofs intersect(valleys), where dormerwalls meet shingles (step)and around chimneys.

Roofers have costs (gas, time) associated with giv-ing free quotes, so do notgo overboard when invit-ing companies to bid yourroof. Remember thatwhile you are sizing-upthe roofer, he will be siz-ing you up too! Callingout numerous companieswastes your time andtheir money.

A final tip is thatroofers and shingles arenot all created equal, sofor an investment of thissize and importance, get-ting two written bids isusually the best idea.
