Do you snore or know someone whodoes? Do you have sleep apnea butstruggle nightly with your CPAP (con-tinuous positive airway pressure)machine?

You’re not alone! An estimated 40

million Americanssnore and nearly 20million have sleepapnea, a condition where theairway collapses during sleep, causingthe person to stop breathing and awak-en multiple times every hour with agasp.

Sleep apnea is a life threatening sleepdisorder that left undiagnosed anduntreated can shorten your life span upto 18 years!

While CPAP is the gold standard ofsleep apnea treatment, many peoplecan’t tolerate the masks, hoses, andinconvenience.

An oral appliance is an FDA-approved CPAP alternative that fits overyour teeth and holds the lower jaw for-

ward, keeping your airway from col-lapsing.

A sleep apnea sufferer himself, Dr.Timothy Kitzmiller tried CPAP butstruggled with it. He started using an

oral appliance and now he andhis patients enjoy quiet, healthful sleep every night.

“I give Dr. Kitzmillerand Lori a 10 out of 10 in the

treatment they gave me for my sleepapnea. I had heard from friends andfamily that I snored but did not realize Ihad apnea. After my diagnosis at a sleeplab, Dr. Kitzmiller explained myoptions,” said Molly.

“I knew CPAP and surgery were notfor me. The oral appliance he made forme is unbelievable! No more headachesand I’m much more rested. I know thatthis treatment is going to add years tomy life and healthy vitality!” she said.

Call Dr. Kitzmiller today at 513-248-8848 to schedule your complimentaryconsultation to see if this solution isright for you!

The earlier the better. That’s Dr. Tiffany Buller-Schussler’s philosophy onchildren and dentistry.

The AmericanAcademy of PediatricDentistry recommendsthat a child start seeingthe dentist very early, often as early as the teethstart erupting. While Dr.Buller-Schussler does notsee infants or very youngtoddlers, she sees childrenin her office as early asage three.

“It’s very important toget the child accustomedto the office at an earlyage so that they becomeless afraid and becomecomfortable with regulardental care as they getolder. They will also be

more calm when theycome for their visits.”

The most importantreason, however, sheexplained is to screen forany early childhood decayor disorders of the teethand jaws. A simple screen-ing appointment candetect dental caries, miss-ing permanent teeth, defects of the teeth andjaws and other things.

Dental caries are con-sidered a childhood dis-ease and the incidence isonce again on the rise.Part of the problem is con-sumption of juices, softdrinks, and bottled water.Even more devastating isthe fact that often parentsand children are not edu-cated in proper oral care.

Once teeth are in themouth, they should becleaned. Parents shoulduse a wash cloth or gauzeto wipe an infant’s teethuntil they have enoughteeth to use a brush.

A toddler, Dr. Buller-Schussler said, shouldhave their own tooth-brush to be used with thehelp of a parent and canuse paste with fluorideonce they are old enoughto spit.

It’s also necessary to beeducated on the impor-tance of a proper diet.Parents should monitorthe consumption of juicesand soft drinks, evendiluting them 50-50 withwater. If this is done whenthe child first starts drink-ing juices, they won’tnotice a difference.

Once teeth are in, if achild still uses a bottlebefore bed, it should befilled with water if possible.

After adult molars arein place sealants shouldbe placed over them to

protect the permanentteeth and prevent furtherdecay.

“Dental diseases canbecome very serious, especially in children,”said Dr. Buller-Schussler.“They result in pain, lossof school days, infection, loss of the baby tooth andcan lead to damage to thepermanent teeth. In rarecases hospitalization, oreven death can occur ifleft untreated.”

After an initial visitwith Dr. Buller-Schussler,she can refer parents to aSpecialist if she feels it isnecessary. Pediatric den-tists, she said, are vitalpartners.

An initial visit for ayoungster includes famil-iarizing them with theoffice.

“We make sure theyare comfortable andhappy so that they willbecome good dentalpatients for the rest oftheir lives,” she said.

Dr. Buller-Schussler hasbeen practicing for 12years, but has been inter-ested in dentistry sinceshe was 9 years old. Herfocus of practice is oneducation and restorationof the mouth to full formand function so that herpatients can maintaintheir teeth and preventthe need for extensivefuture treatment.

Piercing is a hotfashion trend butyou may not besmiling pretty forlong if you get onein your mouth.

A new studyshows oral piercing– such as on thetongue or lip – maycause tooth loss.

“Wearing oralpiercing ornaments, even over relativelyshort periods, mayresult in significantdeformities to gingi-val tissue (gums) thatmight not respond satis-factorily to surgery and,in fact, may lead to toothloss,” said lead researcherDr. John K. Brooks, DDS,associate professor at theUniversity of MarylandDental School in a newsrelease.

His study appears inthe July issue of theJournal of the AmericanDental Association.

The damage to the

gum line comes from theconstant contact betweenthe oral jewelry and thegums.

The results can be per-manent, such as recedinggums, chipped or frac-tured teeth, nerve damageor inflammation at pierc-ing site and or periodonti-tis (when the inner layerof the gum and bone pullaway from the teeth andform pockets), resulting inloose teeth or tooth loss.

The researchersdiscussed five casesof young adults withoral piercing jewelryand the health of thegums near it.

In each case, thepatient had somedegree of recedinggums and injury nearthe piercing site.Three of them hadsigns of severe peri-odontitis.

In one case, a 19-year-old womanshowed significant

signs of receding gums injust five months.

This type of fast-actingdamage means it’s criticalfor people with oral pierc-ings to get regular dentalcheckups, Brooks said.

If you or someone youlove has an oral piercingand are experiencing pain, inflammation or any otherdifficulty, call yourMortenson Family Dentistimmediately at 525-7586for an appointment.

Let’s face it – most of us, if notall of us, have a full plate thesedays. Most of our plates, in fact, runneth over!

There is so little time left inthe day/week to accomplish allthe things that are on our to-dolists, including cleaning ourhomes.

Because of the busy scheduleswe all seem to keep and for sev-eral other reasons, many peoplehave turned to Regal Maid andhave been doing so for 25 years.

This family-owned local busi-ness has achieved this milestoneand outlasted much competitionin the area by sticking with theircore philosophy of “treating theemployees right first and alwaysfocusing on the internal customerservice they provide first, and theexternal customer service falls ata close second,” said AndyVenneman, owner.

According to Andy, the key to

giving their clients a great experi-ence and the clean home or roomevery time is to make sure theemployees are happy with theirpositions and responsibilities.

That positive momentumbeing a focus in turn translatesinto how the employees operateand perform at the clients’ homesor businesses.

This way of running the busi-ness has kept Regal Maid provid-ing excellent service and has keptsome clients using the servicesince 1986.

Regal Maid has also been con-tinuously involved in the com-munity through donations, pro-viding local employment oppor-tunities and being involved withlocal schools.

The navy blue, fuel efficientcars that the cleaning service usesare a familiar sight to many resi-dents in Northern Kentucky andare often on the road as many of

es as well as residents.Often, there is a misconception

about having to be “wealthy” touse a cleaning service, but RegalMaid has been spreading theword that their customers call formany different reasons and havemany different needs and incomelevels.

Several calls are made by peo-ple who find that they are simplytoo busy to keep up with the taskof cleaning nooks and crannieson a monthly or weekly basis, orthat find that a particular room intheir home is a high traffic areaor even an ignored area that issimply too much to keep upwith.

Clients call to get help becausethey physically cannot do thework that needs to be done, because perhaps they are sick orelderly or their loved ones call to

help in that situation.Regal Maid caters to each cus-

tomer’s particular needs, whether big or small, one time orweekly, and this flexible servicehas been a huge part in getting totheir 25th anniversary.

Many customers also give thegift of a cleaner home as a gift tomoms on Mother’s Day, birthdaygifts for friends and loved ones, wedding gifts for the coupleshome, Valentine’s Day to givetheir special one a day off fromchores, etc., in the way of gift cer-tificates which are easily pur-chased online or by phone.

Jim Barrie wants to share his love for SCUBA diving, so he’s letting everyone tryit. His dive shop, The Scuba Shack, (www.TheScubaPlace.com) located in Florence,is offering a “Try SCUBA Experience” to anyone interested in diving.

“SCUBA diving is not a sport. It’s not a hobby. It’s a lifestyle! We want to exposeas many people as we can to this exciting way of life,” said Barrie.

Barrie has owned The Scuba Shack for 12 years, and in that time has been toldby countless people that they would love to try diving.

He knows that if they do, they’ll love it! So he wants to give them the opportuni-ty. All those who would like to try SCUBA diving will be geared-up and go for adip with a certified instructor in The Scuba Shack’s indoor, heated, 10 foot-deep,diver training pool. Reservations are required, and can be made by calling 859-283-1550.

The Scuba Shack also offers SCUBA certification training. Through comprehen-sive classroom and pool training, divers learn proper technique, safety measures, and how to use the equipment.

Once certified, a diver is ready to go on one of the shop’s many trips to divelocations in the United States and abroad.

The Shack currently has trips scheduled to: Florida, North Carolina, St. Lucia,Bonaire, Fiji, Bali/Indonesia, Egypt and The Red Sea. Pricing varies by destination.

“There’s nothing quite like a group trip” said Barrie. “Both divers and non-divers come back with a group of new friends, having visited some of the world’smost beautiful destinations” he said.

With a bit of smart preparation, you’ll be feeling good during yourfitness routine and gorgeously glow-ing afterward.

Keep these ideas in mind to helpyou look great, even between work-outs.

• In the drink:As you work out, it’s natural that

your body will shed water in theform of sweat, and it’s essential thatyou keep your body’s fluid levels up.

Dehydration can cause every-thing from discomfort to serioussickness, so don’t let your bodydown.

Even when you’re not workingout, hot days call for extra hydration. The added benefits are that drinkingmore water can help to keep yourskin clear and your appetite sated.

• Face forward:The exertion of exercising can be

a pore-clogging nightmare. That’swhy it’s particularly important tohave a good skin care regime adapt-ed to your skin’s needs.

To keep your skin radiant and in

balance, keep products like a refresh-ing mist spritz and an exfoliatingcleanser on hand and in your medi-cine cabinet.

• Hair apparent:Swimming’s a great way to stay

active – whether in the pool or theocean – but it can take a toll on yourlocks.

Whatever your activities, it’simportant to use an eco-friendlyshampoo – after all, a good choicefor the environment can be a goodchoice for you, too.

If your tresses are stressed out, besure to give them a deep condition-ing treatment, too.

Whether your inspiration is get-ting healthy or a beauty boost, exer-cise is the best way to do it.

Taking advantage of the opportu-nity to work out, regardless of theseason, with these thoughts in mindwill help you look your best, throughout the year.

The old statement thatthe only thing certain inlife is death and taxesrings true for anyone fac-ing old age or illness, oreven younger people whoare caretakers for elderlyparents.

Ronald B. JonesFuneral Home in Ludlow,Ky., in business for 75years, knows how to helpwith difficult decisions.

“We can help plan afuneral that takes care ofall the wishes of the fami-ly,” said Ronald Jones, owner of the facility, andlifelong resident ofLudlow.

“We give every personwho comes here personalattention, which has overthe years built a trustbetween our clients andourselves. The personalattention is what I believesets us apart,” he said.

Pre-planning has

become one of the mostpopular outreach pro-grams for funeral homes, because more people wantto specify exactly whatthey want when they die.

“People realize it is likea gift to their children, tomake the decisions beforethey have to,” explainedJones.

“That way the childrenknow exactly what theirparents want. I’ve hadchildren come in to lookover the specificationstheir parents set upbeforehand, and they aresurprised, and told usthey are so glad their par-ents picked things out, because they wouldn’thave chosen the samethings,” he said.

Jones said since theyhave been in business solong, they know all thehospitals, churches andcemeteries, so they are

able to make all arrange-ments when a persondies, to take some of thestrain off the rest of thefamily, who are grieving, and sometimes in shock.

“We do everything forthe family,” said Jones.“We are open seven daysa week, 24 hours a day, sowe are never closed. Wemake all the arrange-ments, and take care ofthe flowers, so the familycan rest assured they arein capable hands.”

Cremation has becomea more viable choice, anddoes not have a stigmaattached anymore.

Visitation has changed, over the years, and nowapproximately 30 percentof people want to havethe visitation and funeralall in one day.

“One thing we stress tothe families is that whenyou have a visitation, the

great majority of peoplecome to see the livingpeople,” explained Jones.

“So if your mom ordad has outlived most oftheir friends, you stillhave the visitation for thepeople who want to comeand see you to expresstheir sorrow for your loss. Many families don’t takethat into consideration,”he said.

Jones likes his businessbecause he can be helpful

to people in distress, andthat is very important tohim.
