L. Arts/WritingThis school year, our fifth grade students will be working hard to become well-developed writers. We will be working on creating Narrative, Informational, and Persuasive writing pieces. This spring, we will be taking the 5th Grade Writing Test and are currently working hard to be successful. Our language arts skills will be embedded in our writing lessons. As you see in-progress and graded writing assignments come home, please take the time to go over them with your child.

Social Studies The first Social Studies unit was designed to introduce the eight themes that fifth graders should know. Students focused on relating beliefs and ideals; conflict and change; individuals, groups, institutions; location; movement and migration; production, distribution, consumption; scarcity and technological innovations. We have since begun a thorough study of the Civil War, which will continue throughout this month.

ScienceThe fifth grade year begins with an in depth look at cells. Fifth graders should be able to…

-Identify organelles and their functions.

-Compare and contrast animal and plant cells.

-Understand how cells multiply.
