The Scripture LessonsRomans 10: 5-17 (NSRV) Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law, that "the
person who does these things will live by them." But the righteousness that
comes from faith says, "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into
heaven?" (that is, to bring Christ down) "or 'Who will descend into the abyss?'"
(that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).
But what does it say?
"The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart" (that is, the word of
faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord
and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the
mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, "No one who believes in him will be
put to shame." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same
Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, "Everyone who
calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." But how are they to call on one
in whom they have not believed? And how are they to hear without someone
to proclaim him? And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it
is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" But not
all have obeyed the good news, for Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our
message?" So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes
through the word of Christ.
Matthew 28: 16-20 (NSRV)Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had
directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.
And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has
been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and
teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And
remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

HERE’S THE SCOOPMISSION 100 FUND - On each Sunday, September 22 and 29, the Mission Committee is
collecting a special Mission 100 offering for our Covenant Relationship with Missionary
Miguel Mairena. If 100 people contribute $25 towards our yearly commitment, we will

appreciated and get us closer to our goal. Using the offering envelope provided in the
Sunday bulletin, checks may be written to La Plata UMC with 'Covenant Missionary' on the
memo line. Miguel is a Missionary with the Board of Global Ministries of The United
Methodist Church and represents the Baltimore-Washington Conference. He and his wife,
Nan McCurdy, also a B-W Conference Missionary, serve in Puebla, Mexico with Give Ye
Them To Eat. Look for information about Miguel and Nan's work with GYTTE at our Mission

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS - We love our pets – all kinds of pets. Dogs, cats, horses,
goats, sheep, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, and many more. We’re raising money to support one
of our partners in the Blessing of the Animals. It’s a local organization called Help for Pets.
Help for Pets is a community outreach program that provides pet food, shelters, supplies
and services for the elderly, disabled, homeless and low income residents of Southern
Maryland, who are struggling to keep their pets. With our support, they can continue to
help keep pets at home where they belong. There is a container in the Lobby/Narthex in
which you can make your donation. Donate now and start planning ahead for the Blessing
of the animals on October 27th by inviting friends and neighbors. Animals of all varieties
and sizes will be welcome. See The Grapevine for more information.
HARVEST DINNER - Our Annual Harvest Dinner will be held on Friday, November 1, from

fundraiser, so please invite your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers. The menu
features ham, roast turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, candied sweet potatoes,
green beans, kale, cranberries, rolls, drinks, and dessert. Carry-out meals are available.
Adult tickets are $20, children (aged 5 to 10) are $5. Carry-out meals are $20. It takes a lot
of hands to make this work, so if you can lend yours, it would be appreciated. Please
contact Bonnie Thompson at 240-298-5389 if you would like to help.
SPIRITUAL GIFTS - Have you ever wondered about Spiritual gifts? Do you know what
spiritual gifts you possess? Perhaps, you wonder if your spiritual gifts have changed over
the years, because as Ecclesiastics 3 reminds us, everything has a season, and therefore we
grow and change over time. In the coming weeks we are going to ask everyone to complete
a Spiritual Gifts Inventory. These will be kept confidential and only you will see your own
unique results. Remember, 1 Corinthians 12:7 (NLV) says…"The Holy Spirit works in each
person in one way or another for the good of all.” We look forward to having you all
participate in this venture.
HOLIDAY CRAFT FAIR AND BAKE SALE - Are you a crafter? Do you own your own
business? Call the church office, 301-934-2288 to get your application to rent space at our

APPALACHIA SERVICE PROJECT (ASP) - 2020 interest? Yes, it seems like we just got back.
But, we can begin reserving space for summer 2020 trips on Sept. 16. Please reply to John
Carns (text/cell - 301.848.0060 or e-mail - [email protected] ) to let him know which trip
(High School or Middle School) and how many folks might be interested. We just need an
approximate head count for now. You can also connect with John if you have any
questions.
COUNTDOWN FOR CHILDREN - The Countdown for Children ages 4 and up has begun.
If your child likes to sing or play an instrument (or even if you just want to have fun with
other kids and teens your age), please consider joining the Cherub Choir and Crimson
Angels. If you needed a little more incentive to join us, there is a direct connection between
participating in music activities (beyond simply listening with headphones) is shown to
improve academic performance and achievement. Cherub Choir is for those who are 4
years old and some elementary school. Crimson Angels is for older children to include
middle and high school. There also are options for specialty groups for solos, duets, and
targeted performances. Beginning September 18, choirs meet every Wednesday from 7
p.m. until 7:45 p.m. in the downstairs music room. Check out past music performances at
www.laplataumc.org/media (we are at the bottom of the page). We love and welcome
children of all ages, backgrounds and faiths. For more details, email:
CHANCEL CHOIR NEEDS YOU - In recent years, our numbers have dwindled due to
relocations, illnesses, and even death. We really need more singers! Rehearsals are on
Wednesdays and start at 7:30 p.m. No one has to commit to every rehearsal or
performance--your schedule can be very flexible! Don't feel that you are not a good
singer--we help you grow. The Chancel Choir is a very spiritual and loving group that likes
to have fun. Please consider joining us. If you need more info, call Pat
Day--(301)934-4896; otherwise just come on the fourth.
HELP WANTED - Are you technology savvy? Do you enjoy working with computers, or
audio and video systems? LPUMC Tech and Media team is looking for help in all areas of
technology. All are invited to share in this amazing ministry, making our services available
to anyone who is not able to attend. Work includes operating video cameras, sound
boards, presentations for Sunday services, computer and server maintenance, and network
support. If you are interested, please contact the church office.
OPPORTUNITY - Brothers and Sisters, the church is looking for some bi or tri-lingual help.
For some of our upcoming services, we would like to lift up languages other than English.
If you have the ability to speak Spanish, Italian, German, Latin, or other foreign languages,
would you make your ability known by marking your ability and language on the
Attendance pads or call the Church Office? It will be a help to our worship and a blessing
to you as you utilize your gifts for the Kingdom! Thanks in advance!
WORSHIPWORSHIP SCHEDULE - The Sunday morning worship schedule is: Café Worship at 8:30 AM
in Fellowship Hall 2, and Traditional Worship in the Sanctuary at 11:00 AM.

week.

SERVICE & CARINGFOOD PANTRY NEEDS YOUR HELP - The Food Pantry is requesting your donations of the
following items, grape jelly, canned peaches, pears, mandarin oranges, applesauce, (no
peel off cups please), pasta meal bags, baked beans, soups, children's juice boxes, snack
items for kids (individual wrapped cookies, cheese crackers etc.). You may place your
donated items in the Food Donation Box in the front entrance. Pet food donations are
always appreciated. You can also make monetary donations, just write "Food Pantry" in
the memo line of your check, or give online.
FAITH SHARINGPLEASE INVITE YOUR FRIENDS - It is the simplest and most effective way to share Christ
with others: just invite your friends to church with you. Most people who grew up as
Christians and who aren't in a church say they just haven't found a church they like, and
because no one has invited them. Most people if you ask, will say yes to an invitation. Just
ask them to come to church for a special event, or special Sunday, or to hear a sermon you
think will help them.
ADMINISTRATIONPRAYER LIST - The bulletin prayer list page has been updated. If you have any questions,
or would like to add someone to the prayer list, please call Karen in the church office.
RECYCLED CHRISTMAS - Please call the church office to schedule an appointment to drop
off your Christmas Recycle donations. All donations must be placed in the attic.
Ship Wrecked
A voyaging ship was wrecked during a storm at sea and only two of the men
on it were able to swim to a small, desert-like island. The two survivors, not
knowing what else to do, agreed that they had no other recourse but to pray to
God. However, to find out whose prayer was more powerful, they agreed to Divide
the territory between them and stay on opposite sides of the island.
The first thing they prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw
a fruit-bearing tree on his side of the land, and he was able to eat its fruit. The
other man's parcel of land remained barren.
After a week, the first man was lonely and he decided to pray for a wife. The
next day, another ship was wrecked, and the only survivor was a woman who
swam to his side of the island. On the other side of the island, the second man has
nothing.
Soon the first man prayed for a house, clothes, and more food. The next day,
like a miracle, all of these were given to him. The second man still had nothing.
Finally, the first man prayed for a ship, so that he and his wife could leave the
island. In the morning a ship docked at his side on the island. He boarded the ship
with his wife and decided to leave the second man on the island. He considered
the other man unworthy to receive God's blessings, since none of his prayers had
been answered.
As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from heaven
booming: "Why are you leaving your companion on the island?"
"My blessings are mine alone, since I was the one who prayed for them, the
first man answered. "His prayers were all unanswered and so he does not deserve
anything."
"You are mistaken!" the voice rebuked him. "He had only one prayer, which
I answered. If not for that, you would not have received any of my blessings."
"Tell me," the first man asked the voice, "what did he pray for that I should
owe him anything?" "He prayed that all your prayers be answered."
