I’m still a little surprised when experienced, successful business owners ask me these 2 questions. Do they “really need a mobile website?” Google reports over 46% of all searches are done from mobile devices and 61% of online research starts on a Smartphone (Source:Searchenginewatch.com). DO YOU THINK YOU NEED A MOBILE WEBSITE? DO YOUR COMPETITORS HAVE A MOBILE WEBSITE? You tell me.“FaceBook’s for teenagers & college kids”...REALLY? If Coca-Cola®, Starbucks®, Sony Playstation® are any indication of Global companies opinion of FaceBook marketing, maybe you should think about if for you business. There is a difference between being rich and having wealth.Wealth is the abundance of something in such surplus that no conditions can destroy it. Making a lot of money is one thing, getting rich another. Creating wealth, well, that’s what very few people ever learn. You have heard the expression “get rich quick,” but you will never hear “get wealthy quick.”

Ever hear the saying, “money never sleeps?” The wealthy take this literally and believe that money must work around the clock to grow. The wealthy respect and pay attention to their money knowing that nothing multiplies without attention. They also know money wants to be loved and acknowledged.

Sound crazy? Show me someone that doesn’t pay attention to their money or is disrespectful of it and I will show you someone lacking money. The wealthy also avoid mistakes that big income earners and the rich make. Here are some common money mistakes you must avoid to create wealth:

1. Seeking comfort, not freedom. Comfort is the enemy of abundance and the most dangerous element of finances. The entire middle class is built on seeking comfort. The wealthy seek freedom and so much abundance that money is no longer dependent on their efforts. More is the mantra, abundance is the affirmation, comfort isn’t on their menu and freedom is the focus.

2. Diversification. You can never get truly wealthy by diversifying your investments. Wall Street has done a great job of selling the public on this idea of diversifying because it benefits Wall Street.

Mark Cuban says “Diversification is for idiots.” Andrew Carnegie said “put all your eggs in one basket and then watch that basket.” If you want to create real wealth learn everything you can about a space and go all in.

3. Depending on one income flow. No matter how big your income is, never depend on one flow. I knew an executive who was earning $350,000 a year, the top 1 percent of all incomes. Suddenly the industry she worked in came to halt and her one income flow was shut down. This has happened to many Americans, destroying trillions of dollars of “pretended” wealth.

To create wealth, you must make investments that will create dependable streams of income flows, independent of your main source of income. I use rental income from apartments and partnerships in other companies to throw off passive flows of income. I continue to pay attention to each of these flows to make them stronger. This is not diversification – it’s fortification of wealth.

4. Comparing to others. Seventy-six percent of working Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. Comparing your finances to others will ensure you never create wealth. People often compare their situation to some starving nation in a remote part of the world to justify being “better off.” Another person’s finances, good or bad, will not pay your bills, won’t fund your retirement and will not provide you peace of mind. Don’t compare your finances to someone else’s.

5. Investing in trends. Avoid investing in the latest and greatest technologies that can be displaced by new technological developments.

Warren Buffett invests in electricity, railroads, banks, insurance, soft drinks, food companies and candy.Don’t get on the roller coaster. Take the longer, slower ride that guarantees arrival.

6. Trusting without proof. The single biggest mistake of my financial life was naïvely

There are those who are BLIND to see the sweat, sacrifice and frustration of small business owners and DEAF to hear their concerns about how difficult it is to run a business in California. My suggestion to them is to push the MUTE button on.

California legislators have diarrhea of pushing papers filled with regulations and mandates to make California a “better” place to live and work in. For whom?

It is clearly apparent that most, if not all, of the laws milling its way through the halls of Sacramento are laws protecting labor, not to those who are hiring them. Lawmakers forget that in spite of their wanting to protect workers, they must attend to the individuals who are sacrificing their livelihood and savings to make life better for themselves, their family, their employees, and their community. Of course, there are those who would take advantage, but we have laws already in existence and a labor department to see that fair treatment is abided by all.

Growth of business and employment is occurring but I would like to see the make up of the employment numbers, the occupations, and new businesses. It is in my opinion that part-time jobs are inclining, full-time jobs and career type (or higher income) professionals are declining. New business growth is coming from the micro-sized and at-home sector. I get, on a monthly basis, a list of new business licenses from my area and I see an increase of at-home businesses. And those who are employing anyone are kept at 1 or 2 employees on an ‘on needed’ basis.

Why the need for no or only a few employees? The labor and employment law reads like a labyrinth of rules of what you can and can not do. If you get lost, penalties and fines will find you. If the slogan “not knowing the law is no excuse” is applied, then we are all screwed! Lawyers, legislators, judges, accountants, and HR specialist cannot possibly have a full and complete understanding of the laws. Thus, our courts are filled with lawsuits…no thanks to our legislators who pass laws with unintentional consequences.

Those unintentional consequences are on the shoulders of the business owners. Yet, they persist on realizing the American dream because they believe in it. They somehow find a way of living through it all while looking over their shoulders and flying below the radar – until something happens that exposes them. They become a target.

Moreover, I believe the underground economy is flourishing. No excuse for it but it happens everywhere and in every industry. Cash is a preferred method of purchasing goods and/or services. The great motivator is that it is difficult to understand and comply with rules and regulations because it costs too much to adhere to it. But they don’t realize that it costs more when they get caught on an infraction. Do they shut down their business? No. They continue onward towards that American Dream. |

California’s 100-year drought

...Continues on page 14

Cover Story

Megadroughts are extreme dry spells that can last for a decade or longer. They have parched the West, including present-day California, long before Europeans settled the region in the 1800s.

California is in the third year of one of the state’s worst droughts in the past century, one that’s led to fierce wildfires, water shortages and restrictions, and potentially staggering agricultural losses.

The dryness in California is only part of a longer-term, 15-year drought across most of the Western USA, one that bioclimatologist Park Williams said is notable because “more area in the West has persistently been in drought during the past 15 years than in any other 15-year period since the 1150s and 1160s” — that’s more than 850 years ago.

“When considering the West as a whole, we are currently in the midst of a historically relevant megadrought,” said Williams, a professor at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University in New York.

Megadroughts are what Cornell University scientist Toby Ault calls the “great white sharks of climate: powerful,

dangerous and hard to detect before it’s too late. They have happened in the past, and they are still out there, lurking in what is possible for the future, even without climate change.” Ault goes so far as to call megadroughts “a threat to civilization.”

WHAT IS A MEGADROUGHT?Megadroughts are defined more by their duration than their severity. They are extreme dry spells that can last for a decade or longer, according to research meteorologist Martin Hoerling of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Megadroughts have parched the West, including present-day California, long before Europeans settled the region in the 1800s.

Most of the USA’s droughts of the past century, even the infamous 1930s Dust Bowl that forced migrations of Oklahomans and others from the Plains, “were exceeded in severity and duration multiple times by droughts during the preceding 2,000 years,” the National Climate Assessment reported this year.

The difference now, of course, is

the Western USA is home to more than 70 million people who weren’t here for previous megadroughts. The implications are far more daunting.

Overall, “the nature of the beast is that drought is cyclical, and these long periods of drought have been commonplace in the past,” according to Mark Svoboda, a climatologist at the National Drought Mitigation Center in Lincoln, Neb. “We are simply much more vulnerable today than at any time in the past. People can’t just pick up and leave to the degree they did in the past.”

Ault agrees that this long-term Western dry spell could be classified as a megadrought. “But this is not as bad as it could get,” he warned.

How do scientists know how wet or dry it was centuries ago? Though no weather

records exist before the late 1800s, scientists can examine paleoclimatic “proxy data,” such as tree rings and lake sediment, to find out how much — or little — rain fell hundreds or even thousands of years ago.

At the most simplistic level, tree rings are wider during wet years and narrower during dry years.

“Prolonged droughts — some of which lasted more than a century — brought thriving civilizations, such as the ancestral Pueblo (Native Americans) of the Four Corners region, to starvation, migration and finally collapse, “ Lynn Ingram, a geologist at the University of California-Berkeley, wrote in her recent book The West Without Water.

Ault says decade-long droughts happen once or twice a century in the Western USA, but much worse droughts, ones that last for multiple decades, occur once or twice per millennium.

Has California reached megadrought status? Not yet: “This one wouldn’t stand out as a megadrought,” Hoerling

said. Even so, “this is the state’s worst consecutive three years for precipitation in 119 years of records,” he said.

As of Aug. 28, 100% of the state of California was considered to be in a drought, according to the U.S.

Sacramento Republic FC announced it has taken steps to acquire property at the Railyards for a planned soccer stadium. The urban infill project is south of the River District and north of downtown Sacramento.

Officials from the professional Major League Soccer or MLS, plan to visited Sacramento to evaluate the city’s potential for an expansion franchise. The Club released drawings of the planned stadium and said Railyards developer Larry Kelley will join Republic FC’s management group if the MLS grants the Club expansion rights.

Sacramento Republic FC is an expansion franchise of USL PRO. The club

launched its inaugural season last March and plays its home matches at the 8,000-seat Bonney Field.

Major League Soccer’s Mark Abbott called Sacramento’s efforts to land an MLS franchise “phenomenal” and said

he was “impressed.” Abbott spoke at a rally inside one of the old buildings at the Railyards. The area would likely home for a new stadium.

Major League Soccer Deputy Commissioner Mark Abbott has been in

town since yesterday. He was greeted by cheering Sacramento Republic FC fans at three events including a farewell stop today at the Railyards in Sacramento. Abbott says he hasn’t “experienced

anything quite like it.”“The love that

people have for this city was really quite compelling. That was one thing I learned. Secondly, until you see the site, you don’t really have a sense for it. And so, I was in a building yesterday with a view of the site and you can see

how proximate it is to downtown, how it’s connected to downtown and so, just being able to see it really brought it to life for me.”

Abbott says he appreciated Elk Grove’s sales pitch, but thought the proposed stadium in Sacramento’s Railyards was more in line with what the MLS is looking for.

Sacramento Republic FC and the City of Sacramento are making their case to be one of four expansion clubs MLS will grant to begin operation by 2020.

Abbott gave no timeline for a decision, but did say the league would continue conversations with the team and the City. |

trusting a group of people because I liked them and it felt right. I neglected to get proof that they were actually as they presented. Instead I went with my feelings and was deceived. By the time I figured out something was wrong, I was out millions.

Disregard your feelings when it comes to people and always look for solid evidence. If you are so close to people that you are not willing to ask them to provide evidence, make it a policy not to do business with them.

7. Saving to save. It is impossible to create real wealth just by saving money. The banks only pays .25 percent, so it will take you 40 years to grow your money 10 percent if rates stay where they are. More importantly, money that sits around idle always seems to find an emergency to fund.Dave Ramsey suggests you not carry cash or credit cards because when either is available – you’ll create a reason to use it.

To guarantee my wealth, since the age of 25, I moved surplus money into future investments accounts that I could not easily access, so that money was available for investments when I finally had the knowledge and courage to do so. This kept me broke and having to hustle constantly.

8. Pretender spender. On the other end of the spectrum is the pretender spender. They try to impress others with how they spend money. It’s not their money, it is always someone else’s. Sports cars, expensive clothes, designer bags, shoes, V.I.P. tables – the list is endless.

The wealthy are not trying to impress anyone, they are seeking freedom.

When the wealthy hit affluence and abundance, they start throwing money around on ridiculous things – cars, boats, planes, vacation homes. By then, it no longer matters that the things are poor investments. The very wealthy may appear to be flaunting their money with extravagances, but in reality they are not. The money they are spending is miniscule compared to the abundance they’ve created.

Sounds good doesn’t it? So what will it be for you: middle class, rich or wealthy?

You know money won’t make you happy and just getting by won’t either. There is a price to be paid for whatever choice you make. Wealth provides you with options and the person that has options has freedom. |

...Continued from page 8Drought Monitor. More than 58% is in “exceptional” drought, the worst level. Record warmth has fueled the drought as the state sees its hottest year since records began in 1895, the National Climatic Data Center reports.

Because of the dryness, Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown declared a statewide drought emergency this year. Since then, reservoir storage levels have continued to drop, and as of late August, they were down to about 59% of the historical average.

Regulations restricting outdoor water use were put in place in late July for the entire state. People aren’t allowed to hose down driveways and sidewalks, nor are they allowed to water lawns and landscapes (if there is excess runoff ). There are reports of wells running dry in central California.

About 1,000 more wildfires than usual have charred the state, including some unusual ones in the spring.

The drought is likely to inflict $2.2 billion in losses on the agricultural industry, according to a July study from the University of California-Davis.

HOW BAD CAN IT GET IN CALIFORNIA?“If California suffered something like a multi-decade drought,” University of Arizona climate scientist Gregg Garfin said, “the best-case scenario would be some combination of conservation, technological improvements (such as desalinization plants), multi-state cooperation on the drought, economic-based water transfers from agriculture to urban areas and other things like that to get humans through the drought.

“But there would be consequences for ecosystems and agriculture,” he said.“In the worst-case scenario, there might be out-migration and/or ghost towns,” Garfin said. As a way to avoid this, “we could simply suck down more and more groundwater, which would have its own set of ramifications for local aquifers and the environment.”

Even in the worst case of severe multi-decade drought, “it is hard for me to imagine people and businesses being banned from moving into urban areas of

California,” he said.“We have much better resilience now than in the ‘ghost town days,’ with the ability to drill deeper, along with various ways of importing water and trading for water,” Garfin said. “A more subtle way of restricting people (not banning them) is what Santa Fe has done — where new housing developments must either come with their own new source of water, or they must offset the water through conservation.”

Overall, if the drought worsened, “we’d have to learn how to use water more efficiently,” Ault said. “This is a glimpse of the future.”

ROLE OF CLIMATE CHANGEWhat role does climate change play in this drought or in future droughts?Scientists such as Hoerling and Ault say they don’t have the tools to tease out how much of this specific drought might be attributed to climate change.

“As of now, probably very little of the California drought can be attributed to climate change with any certainty,” said tree-ring scientist Edward Cook of Lamont-Doherty.

Overall, past droughts have probably been due to subtle changes in water temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Cooler water temperatures — known as La Niñas — tend to produce drier conditions in the West.

Droughts in North America’s “Medieval Warm Period” (roughly 950-1250) were associated with high temperatures in the Southwest and were probably caused by persistently cool La Niña-like conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Since 2000, the dominant climate pattern has been La Niña.

Hoerling noted that some computer models from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a United Nations science panel, show that California could actually see more, not less, winter rain and snow because of climate change.

However, overall rising temperatures would tend to favor more droughts, University of Arizona scientist Jonathan Overpeck said.

“It’s been anomalously hot recently, which

was not likely to have occurred without global warming,” Overpeck said. “The odds are only going up that we could have a megadrought as the Earth warms.”

Trends toward warmer temperatures could lead to a long-term dry spell in the region, according to a 2004 study led by Cook in the journal Science.

What’s troubling is that the 20th century — during which time California’s population increased from about 1.5 million to almost 40 million — may well have been an outlier, an unusually wet century: “Overall, the 20th century experienced less drought than most of the preceding four to 20 centuries,” the Science study said.

Ault continues to investigate the relationship between climate change and megadroughts and the likelihood that an even more severe megadrought might hit in the next hundred years in the Southwest — one that’s worse than any other drought in the past 1,000 years.

Specifically because of global warming, Ault says, the chances of the Southwestern USA experiencing a decade-long drought is at least 50% (but may be closer to 80%-90%), and the chances of a three-decade-long megadrought range from 20% to 50% over the next century. Ault is writing a study about this that will be published in a forthcoming issue of the American Meteorological Society’s Journal of Climate.

“For the Southwestern U.S., I’m not optimistic about avoiding real megadroughts,” Ault said. “As we add greenhouse gases into the atmosphere — and we haven’t put the brakes on stopping this — we are weighting the dice for megadrought conditions.

“The risks would be lower if we didn’t warm the planet as much as is expected to occur, but they aren’t zero, because we know these things happen naturally,” he said.

This is serious stuff: “Megadroughts are a threat to civilization,” Ault said at an American Geophysical Union conference this year. “They could possibly be even worse than anything experienced by any humans who have lived in that part of the world for the last few thousand years.”|
