LIFE TOGETHER

Adoration the 2nd, 3rd and 4th

Tuesday.

Dear Friends, This past week the parish staff and I spent most of three days doing our yearly calendaring and planning for the coming fall and next year. Like many of you, some staff continues to work from home and some are in the office. Like all of the people who live by a calendar this years’ health crisis has made looking ahead cloudy to partly cloudy. We did our work and looked ahead with an eye on flexibility and creativity. Our diocese’s response to the conditions needed for congregational worship has been conservative, with a desire to offer reverent worship in a safe environment. While the Bishop’s dispensation from attending Mass remains in effect, there is room at all of our masses, weekend and weekday. We have procedures in place that assist in the social distancing requirement. We are also cleaning the church building after every service. Your wearing a mask helps complete that picture. As I mentioned last weekend, some may have difficulty with wearing a mask, particularly if it is too tight. If you are sitting quietly, not speaking or singing, you can lower the mask. If you speak or sing, then please raise your mask. Please continue to wear the mask while receiving Holy Communion. I’m trying to respond in a judicious manner while up-holding the common good. Our working together not only helps each of us, but all of us. Our parish live stream ministry [Good Stream: SJV Live] is welcoming new people to be trained. I am still looking for people to add to the seven members who have stepped up. I’d like to hear from you about this ministry. Are you finding the livestream Masses helpful? Have a good, safe week. Love,

SJV Bulletin Reflection Trinity Sunday, June 7, 2020

Deacon Dan Borné

On the Diaconate, Part 2

This is the second of a multi-part reflection on the diaconate. In our first article we discussed the appointment of the first seven deacons by the Apostles. That means there were deacons before there were ordained priests. More on that in a subsequent reflection. You can find our first installment on the diaconate in the parish bulletin for Fifth Sunday of Easter (May 10, 2020). Just go to the SJV website if you want to check it out. Deacons go through several years of what we call “formation.” There are several dimensions, or fundamental parts of our formation. Some call them “pillars” because they are the “foundations” of our ministry. Sort of like the foundation of a house or building. They involve human, spiritual, intellectual and pastoral formation. Deacons Ricky, Jeff and I went through most of our formation together here in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. We were ordained on June 12, 2010. (Deacon Brent is an old-timer. He was ordained sometime in the latter part of the last century.) We used to have a program in the diocese called the Religious Studies Institute (RSI). It was a three-year program sanctioned by St. Joseph Abbey and Seminary College in Covington (it’s technically in an area once known as St. Benedict, and that’s why you may know it as St. Ben’s). Following two, and sometimes three, years of RSI (it’s varied in the past), candidates for the diaconate then went through three more years of formation in those four areas I mentioned above. So for some guys it took five years, some six, to be ordained a deacon. My situation was weird. Because of a number of unusual circumstances, I began my formation in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, where I studied for two years, and I finished my work in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. One year of formation overlapped, so that meant classes every weekend for a year, half of them in New Orleans and half of them here, so my formation lasted 4½ calendar years but actually spanned five years of study. God’s timing is sometimes hard to figure. In any case, it was a huge blessing to spend those years in New Orleans, making lifelong friends, and the final years in Baton Rouge with my 11 classmates. Our diocese has a whole different approach to formation now, thanks to the Franciscan

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them O Lord

We offer our sympathy to our

parishioners who have recently lost a loved one.

To the family of Ricky and Cindy Melancon, on the death of his mother, Helen.

Missionaries of Our Lady University (FRANU) in Baton Rouge. When St. Ben’s decided it was prudent to wind down RSI, the permanent diaconate program began looking for a new home. FRANU enthusiastically welcomed the program and helped develop a solid, five-year formation curriculum. Bishop Duca will ordain the first class of deacons who have gone through the FRANU program on August 8 at St. Joseph Cathedral. Over twenty men are currently in formation at FRANU. What a blessing! More later. If you have any questions about the di-aconate you’d like answered in future reflections, please let me know at [email protected] Be well. Be blessed. Be well blessed.

Arimathean’s (Funeral Liturgy Coordinators) are an integral part of the funeral liturgy. One coordinator is assigned to each funeral Mass to prepare the church before the funeral party arrives, serve the funeral Mass, and return the church to its normal state after the funeral party departs. This is a great ministry of service and compassion. If you feel called to join this small group of dedicated volunteers, please contact the parish office. LA. has been approved for the new Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) program. This program will provide extra help buying groceries for the families of the more than 600,000 children who normally receive free & reduced-price meals at school. Eligible families who complete an online application will be issued a P-EBT debit card by DCFS. The P-EBT card will function like a standard EBT card, and the same guidelines will apply. Applicants must provide the full names of the student and parent, date of birth, Social Security number, home address, official school name and school district. Visit: https://pebt.doe.louisiana.gov/PublicApps/SNP/

Contact the LAHelpU Call Center at 1.888.524.3578 if you have any issues completing the application.
