At Our Parish

CHANGE “To live is to change. To be perfect is to have changed often.” (Henry Cardinal Newman.)

One of our reasons for coming to church is our desire to change, to grow as sons and daughters of God and to be more like Jesus. The sons in the gospel today are not ideal sons. Jesus is the ideal son who loves us and serves us. As St. Paul reminds us “He emptied (humbled) himself to become our servant.” (Mary is the ideal human being. She lived her words of faith “Let it be done to me according to your word.”). We come for more than comfort food. We come for deep change in our lives—a change of heart and not just a change of mind. Today’s parable is addressed (first) to the Chief Priests and Elders ie., the leaders of the Temple and Sanhedrin. They have been entrusted with the guidance of God’s people and in Jesus’ view are not being faithful leaders because they are collaborating with Roman rule. However, the parable is also addressed to us as followers of Christ. The change for us is to continue to say yes to Jesus’ invitation and to be His faithful followers, i.e., to love and serve as Jesus does. We are to be a servant church: called to work in the vineyard of the Lord. Our doing has to conform to our words. The hurricanes, earthquakes and attendant devastation also call us to this servant hood. We cannot (all) go to these places of destruction. However, Catholic Charities America and Catholic Relief Services are offering help and can use our continuing support. Our change of heart calls for sacrifice on our part. Please join me in supporting these charities where we know that the funds raised go directly to people in need. God Bless, Father Delahunty

GOD’S WAYS In the stream of readings during this portion of Ordinary Time one week’s texts can often appear to pick up exactly where the previous week’s concluded. The sentiments expressed in today’s first reading seem to be a direct reaction to the Gospel passage we heard last week. In that Gospel, the landowner pays the same wages to his workers whether they worked for a full day or for only a few minutes. Today Ezekiel gives us the lament, “The LORD’s way is not fair!”(Ezekiel 18:25). These Sundays in Ordinary Time offer us a glimpse into the ways of the Lord. We see how God’s way has the tendency to turn the accepted conventions of the day upside down. Those who always expected that their way to heaven was guaranteed are disappointed. Those who thought they never had a chance are given that chance. Today offers us another opportunity to discover the abundance of God’s mercy and love.
