OUR CORE VALUE

LAGUNA LĂNG CÔ SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY 2016 | 3

Ms Claire Chiang

Banyan TreeGlobal Foundation

chairperson

As a part of global hospitality group operating in diverse locations, Laguna Lăng Cô’s concept of sustainability seeks to create long-term value for multiple stakeholders and destinations and to inspire associates, guests, and partners to take a wider consideration encompassing a long-term view when making business decisions.

Business leaders must lead by not chasing short term profits, but instead by generating long term impact by transforming the way we operate, live, and transact with all stakeholders. Doing good is not extra; it must be the rule of business. It is our duty to leverage the institutions of business and commerce to improve the world.

INTRODUCTION

LAGUNA LĂNG CÔ SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY 2016 | 4

As a socially responsible business, Banyan Tree, the developer of Laguna Lăng Cô integrated resort, was founded with the core value of driving sustainable development. Banyan Tree Global Foundation was established in 2009 with the call to arms of embracing the environment and empowering the people.

Laguna Lăng Cô, as part of the Banyan Tree Group, has had sustainability at its core since the very first days, from its planning and design to its daily operation. We are proud to be a resort well-known for its socially responsible practices with our wide variety of programmes, from Group initiatives like Greening Communities and Seedlings Mentorship, to Laguna Lăng Cô’s own special projects such as the popular

English Summer Camp for local children. These long-term programmes not only sustain the resort’s position as a leading CSR practitioner in the hospitality industry, but also ratifies Banyan Tree’s long-held values of being a responsible world corporate citizen.

It is my hope that Laguna Lăng Cô will continue to develop and grow in harmony with the surrounding environment and community where our resort is located, and all these efforts will have long-standing effects in the next ten, twenty years, turning Lăng Cô into a vibrant and engaged world-class holiday destination in Central Vietnam.

INTRODUCTION

LAGUNA LĂNG CÔ SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY 2016 | 5

As Ms. Claire Chiang - Banyan Tree Global Foundation’s Chairperson have said, “Doing good is not extra; it must be the rules of business.” We at Laguna Lăng Cô are committed to be a leader of sustainability in Vietnam’s hospitality industry, which is both our ambition and one of our Group’s core values.

For Laguna Lăng Cô, it is not just a responsibility, but also a privilege and opportunity to embrace our environment and support local communities. Each Laguna Lăng Cô associate, management member, and resort guest is our sustainability ambassador, all playing a key role in achieving great success through our Stay for Good and Work For Good programs.

Our achievements in sustainability have been recognized by the local community and government in 2015, taking a lead amongst other enterprises in the region. There are still many missions and challenges

ahead; however, with our clear commitments and goals, we are prepared to meet these head on and continue to shape a sustainable future.

The continuous satisfaction from our guests, stakeholders, and associates as well as sustainability improvement through these CSR projects remain the measures of our success in 2017, all contributing to build our business growth. As building a foundation for the future is very much important, we are gladly sharing here the experience of our 2016 through the Laguna Lăng Cô Sustainability Report for your reading leisure.

Last but not least, we would like to thank you for your participation and support which have all contributed to our achievements in 2016. We look forward to your presence on our journey in 2017.

As an organization, Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts prides itself on a strong foundation of ideals and sustainable business practices, as much to enhance the stay experiences of our guests and also to enrich the communities in which we operate.

Regardless of the activity, it is always heartwarming to truly make a difference to the life of an individual or family through simple acts of kindness or support where it is needed the most. The feedback that we receive from participating guests remains unanimously positive, with some guests even returning for our long-term community projects.

The resorts of Banyan Tree and Angsana Lăng Cô look forward to continuing to make a difference to the lives of our local communities.

For me, some of the highlights of the CSR initiatives are the commitment to ensure that local and fair trade goods and services are purchased where available to support the local economy. Additionally, we sponsor graduate students from local schools, giving special consideration to employing and empowering staff from the local community.

It is great to see that our responsibility and skills all drive towards positive ongoing social sustainability initiatives and measures. It has been a pleasure to take part in such meaningful and impactful programs that help to promote the knowledge of Local Culture at a deeper level.

“Wonderful Experience”There was a comprehensive daily program planned for the guest, which kept us occupied during our three-night stay in the resort.

We visited the resort’s organic farm, which is part of their corporate responsibility initiatives to show the farmers in the nearby villages how to cultivate their crops using organic methods. Some of the vegetables and herbs from the farm were also supplied to the restaurants in the resort. My son enjoyed his time there as he was able to have a first-hand experience to be a farmer, seeding and harvesting of vegetable.

Another activity that we felt meaningful was to teach English in a local elementary school. My wife signed up to be the teacher for the one and half hour lesson while my son joined in as one of the students. They had a wonderful time interacting with the kids who were very enthusiastic about learning and the group activities.

Mathew Lam | Laguna Lăng Cô guest

My holiday in Laguna Lăng Cô was a fascinating eye-opener. The CSR projects which I participated gave me good opportunities to learn and appreciate what I have right now. I think it will be very useful and nice for other children to have experience like this.

Ada Lo, PhD | Laguna Lăng Cô guest

We got the opportunity to join the CSR team to teach in the English summer camp they organized for the children from the village. It was a good experience for my children. They are already asking if they can go back for English teaching again next summer!! They are already planning what they can bring to the children. We also visited the organic farm of Laguna. It was a good learning experience for my “city” kids where they learn about the worm farm, the different types of vegetables being grown, feeding the goats and rabbits.

We also visited the Seedling restaurant in Hoi An. It’s really great to see the efforts which the group has put into helping the youngsters who are disadvantaged. My children are now Facebook and friends with “Tien” which was a seedling member but now employed at the Saffron in Banyan Tree Lăng Cô.

SchlossSchwarzenbach | Laguna Lăng Cô guest

“What a place!” My family and I had a wonderful stay at The Banyan Tree Lăng Cô. We stayed in the 3 bedroom villa for 6 people which was absolutely wonderful and very lavish. As we were 7 people, we kindly asked for an extra bed to be placed in one of the larger rooms which was a bit of a squeeze but that did not ruin the holiday overall.

As the Banyan Tree shares the site with its sister hotel Angsana, this meant that there was a lot of cross- dining and cross- activities taking place between the 2 hotels which gave guests more options of where to eat and what to do. One of the evnts that we took part in was a visit to a local school to teach children English for the afternoon which was absolutely brilliant! Great initiative from a cultural standpoint and the kids at school and my own kids had a laugh.

The staff was very friendly at the hotel and i cannot fault anything - which at the price we paid, would be expected!

Lee Siew Yian | Independent Consultant of Banyan Tree Lifestyle

I visited and worked with the CSR team on many occasions. I am truly impressed by the engagements at many levels, with so many areas being looked into. The projects made a huge difference to the lives of the community, the environment, and helping the villagers to be sustainable.

Thank you for the chance to share the great work, and I look forward to working with the team again to help the local community in the near future.

CalxBeloved | Seedlings Café’s guest

Seedlings café restaurant was set up to help training the under-privileged to work in the hospitality industry. So while the food is good, patrons also have the opportunity to help the young Vietnamese. Do not miss this place when in Hoi An. Sow a seed, change a life.
