From the Pres.

Hi All, I encourage you all to read this article in its entirety as it contains information that you may one day need - hopefully never but given the game we play it is possible. Hockey balls are hard! Teeth are hard too but when a ball flies off a stick into you face hockey balls are harder and teeth break. I know - it happened to me in a game just three weeks ago. As a result of this accident I lost my two front teeth. I've had injuries in hockey before but I can assure you the pain of this injury was three times worse than anything I have suffered before. First there was the physical pain of having my teeth forced through my upper lip. I needed six stitches to fix that one up. My two front teeth were cracked through at the gum line and the dentist didn't hesitate to remove them both leaving me with a very large gap at the front. Then there was the financial pain. My injury occurred on a Sunday afternoon so I had to travel in to the city to see an emergency dentist. After X-rays, the start of two root canals and some patch up work I was out of pocket over $1,000 - and that was just the start of it. In the following weeks I have had a number of visits to the dentist. I'm looking at the prospect of having two implants to replace my teeth. This is where they put a screw in to your jaw bone then build this up to eventually put crowns in place where the teeth once were. This procedure will take some 4 - 6 months before it is completed and will cost about $13,000. My health insurance will cover about $3,000 and the clubs insurance will cover $2,500 so I'm out of pocket some $7,500. I'm sure you can now feel my pain. And lastly there was the emotional pain. I really struggled with the thought of not having my teeth. I wouldn't say I'm vain but its hard to smile, talk and eat without your two front teeth. This impacts on you every single day. Its hard to mix socially and I've made a few changes to where I eat my lunch at work, how I smile at people and I'm a lot more conscious of what I say and when I talk. It’s been hard to adjust. So, why am I telling you all this? Well first I don't want this to happen to anyone else and there's a few lessons we can all take out of this to ensure if this was to happen to you then you can lessen the pain. I encourage you all to wear a mouth guard. Yes, it may not be cool, it may make you talk funny and it can be uncomfortable. Well, I can assure you that's nothing compared to missing a couple of teeth. I know our club policy is for all juniors to wear mouth guards but seniors I encourage you to do the same. The other point I want you all to think long and hard about is what insurance cover do you have in place. Insurance is all about the risk so this is a personal decision and only one you can make. All I can do is encourage you to explore your options in full so you can make an informed decision. I bet most of you didn't know that whilst the club takes out insurance on your behalf in case you are injured the maximum level of cover is $2,500 and it doesn't cover any gaps where Medicare covers you. Also, did you know that with the cover the club takes out on your behalf you can increase your personal level of cover for a small extra premium? Think about it. If you bought a car and it was worth $15,000 would you insure it for $2,500? It's your choice as to what you do. You can increase your personal health insurance, increase your cover with the hockey club, wear a mouth guard... I can't make you do any of these things but I encourage you to look in to the details and make an informed decision about the cost versus the risk. Follow these links and check out the details for yourself. http://www.jltsport.com.au/hockey/ http://www.hockeywa.org.au/scopepage.cfm?scopeCode=Insurance Keep enjoying your hockey and I hope to see you all on the pitch real soon. Round 7 Suburban 2 – Joondalup Lakers 1 12th June 2011 at Shenton Turf

We had an afternoon game this week and what a game it was. Everyone was well rested after the long weekend break and ready to get back into it. However as we began to arrive at Shenton park it was clear that not all about to set us back we were going to give Subs a run for their money, and that we did.

We had a brilliant first half, fairly evenly matched to begin with, although we soon began to dominate the first half, with us conceding the first short corner and then a few more. Our attack was looking stunning we were switching sides and using space well, with lots of fantastic looking hockey and good linking and passing throughout the field.

On the side line we had a superb support group, some of the men’s ones and twos had come down to watch us and their encouragement on the side line was very welcoming and motivating.

Coming off at half time the score was nil all, and a rest for our burning lungs was very welcome. It was clear we needed to step it up just that little bit further, we were working so hard and still had no goals.

Second half we went on with the same strength and motivation, the game was still very fast paced. Subs got the first goal in, quiet soon after the half began. You could see our heads slightly drop, we needed to keep up the drive, thank fully we did, with great use of space and good passes between each other. Brittany Chandler was having a great attacking game, making some superb tackles and keeping Subs out of our D.

With a spectacular run up the side and some good team work we got our first goal. Passed in from the top right hand corner to ‘spot’ in the middle of the D, an eager Melissa Harkness was waiting, wasting no time, pounced on the ball and scored a beautiful goal that snuck in behind the goalie. Absolutely ecstatic, we all ran back to our half to set up again, realising that this was anyone’s game. The pace and drive defiantly picked up now that the score was evened out. We held Subs off again for another good 10minutes, but they managed to sneak in the deciding goal. It was pleasing to see that we didn’t slow the pace down or stop trying until the time ran out on the clock.

The whole team had a blinder of a game, we walked away feeling pretty good with ourselves, to have only been defeated 2-1 by a team that was 3rd on the table. There was a slight bit of disappointment as it was very possible for us to have won this game. Overall one of our best games yet, given that half the team was sick.

Round 8 Riverside Lions 5 – Joondalup Lakers 1 18th June 2011 at Shenton Turf

A lovely rainy day for a game of hockey, there wasn’t many sniffles this week, which is always a good start. The team seemed in quiet high spirits ready to take on the Lions, especially as it was some of the girl’s previous team. We had our normal team and actually had two subs on the side, which was an even better start for us.

The game started fast and it was clear from the beginning the Lions wanted goals. We found out early that they had some good strikers that would get shots on goal away fast. In the first half we were doing pretty well. Each team was having a good amount of time in the others half and getting plenty of shots on goal. Throughout the game only a few short corners were conceded for each team, which was a good indication of how good the defence was.

Half way through the first half it was clear who the star players in the Lions side were, and who we needed to watch out for. Unfortunately the Lions team members were a bit dirty with their tactics, a few incidents where some of their team members were hacking at our player’s legs, once we had won a tackle. Thankfully our girls have better sports man ship than that and we continued to play our own game without turning things nasty and getting caught up in this kind of behaviour.

The first half of the game was best for us, as we were using space and both sides of the field with good passing. The defence was doing an amazing job clearing the ball from the ‘D’ early and our goalie made some astounding saves on some very fast shots. Lions managed to score first, this caused the pace of the game to pick up even more, and the Lions side would always self play which meant we had to stay very awake and get back on defence quickly. Lions were beginning to spend a lot of time in our half. We were playing with high forwards and managed to get a long ball out to Challen Kalwij who made a fantastic lead across the top of the over to the top left hand corner, she then proceeded to dribble the ball past at least 5 Lion’s players and into the ‘D’ and score an outstanding goal from the left side into the right corner of the goal. Amazing hockey to witness, and what a happy lady she was.

During the first half Dominique de Plessis managed to get a hockey stick to the face and split her bottom lip open, so that meant we only had one sub left on the side line. But Dominique is not one to let injury hold her back, so when Sarah Perotti injured her bad thumb and we had no subs left on the side line at the time she came back on to help us out.

During the second half victory seemed to slip away from us, with lions scoring more goals against us. We weren’t playing horrible hockey, in fact walking away from the game it felt as though the score didn’t reflect the game 100% for us (5-1). Unfortunately that’s not what matters. Again it was great to see that we didn’t give up on getting another goal in until time had run out completely. By the time that final whistle came I’m pretty sure we were all glad it was over. Something didn’t click so well for us as a team in the second half. We have definitely grown as a team and we are improving with each week we play, it’s just time we got a few more goals on the board, something for us to work on this week at training. We are certainly a well gelled team and are in it together with a lot of support for each other, well played ladies.

Round 7

Modernians 4 – Joondalup Lakers 2

10th June 2011 at PHS-2

Joondalup Lakers graced the field of Perth Hockey Stadium 2 in front of a large crowd in their clash against

Modernians. After a superb warm-up lead by skipper JC on the dark grass fields the Joondalup boys were raring

to go. JC had time kept well and had the boys running onto the field into some ball work as soon as the previous

game had finished with no wait. The warm-up was crisp with Ali shooting well and Dan in fine form we looked

unstoppable as we took the field.

From the start Joondalup dictated the game attacking 80% of the time. Dr Dre and JC were solid down back

picking off any feeble attempt MODS had at attacking in the first half. At the other end of the field the control

and pressure was going unrewarded until mid way through when Lakers got a short corner a superb positioning

D.A. Tom Wallace saw the MODS keeper picking the ball out of the net and Lakers leading the game 1-0. This

looked to be the flood gates opening as with the rest of the half being played in Lakers attacking 25 but so many

opportunities went begging.

At half time there was good spirits as Lakers were playing beautifully, but only being 1-0 up instead of 4-0, from

missed opportunities, was sitting in the backs of our minds.

With a new half saw a new Lakers side. A quick goal from a MODS attacker saw an extreme momentum shift

with Mods beginning to control the game. A fast break caught Lakers out on the back foot and MODS scored

another. 2-1 down Lakers had a hard five and through some great skill from rabbit off of a short corner Joel

Headband was able to get another passed the keeper.

Coming so close to scoring on so many occasions was ultimately our downfall; some pearler saves from Dan were

not enough to keep MODS from putting on another two and taking out the game 4-2.

Joondalup are looking to overcome jetlag next week and bounce back against South West Strikers next week in

Busselton in what is sure to be an exhilarating game.

JB’s BOG – Dusty, for playing a blinder at left half and cutting down most of Mods attempts to attack.

Round 8

South West Strikers 0 – Joondalup Lakers 2

18th June 2011 at Busselton Stadium

With a devastating loss the previous week and our minds still set on making the finals we couldn't let another game finish

with us listening to the other team sing their anthem. Placing 5th on the ladder, beneath SW Strikers, all odds pointed

against us. We were short from our captain, JC, due to a random knee injury and with some swift hunting from Sax we

recruited a valuable player from the 3's, Dean, so in all only 13 able players (including the slightly warmed up Brian Saxby)

could make the long mission down south into enemy territory.

Prior to the whistle blowing we geared up to the usual smelly change room banter and terrible jokes (not naming anyone in

particular, Rabbit or Dan), listened to some tactical words from Sax and our fellow captain, and fired up with our routine

warm up.

The first half was played out mostly on the opposition’s right side and with some great defensive work from Lakers we

managed to hold them from taking too many shots on what was a flawless game for our goalkeeper, Daniel Mander.

Rewarded with a penalty corner after holding most possession, Dusty scored off a sneaky touch on the post placing Lakers

1-0 up and hungry for more.

Second half came and with some nifty positioning at the back from Trent cutting-off the Strikers high forward from

receiving any potential threats. Lakers played another half maintaining possession of the ball and dominating the Strikers in

front of their home crowd. A few near goals were scored from either hitting the post (next time Jason) or screaming just

wide of the goal. With much anticipation and several efforts, with 10 minutes to go Dean ..... comes on to right wing and

finishes off some brilliant team play with a wild tommah. Strikers fought till the end with pride but Lakers had already

beaten the odds and won the game 2-0.

Great win boys and yet another glimpse of the potential this team has to offer the club. Both teams played with good

sportsmanship and thank you to the SW Strikers for their hospitality after the game

Round 7

Modernians 1 – Joondalup Lakers 6

10th June 2011 at PHS-2

The match played at the Perth Hockey stadium on Friday 10th June 2011 resulted in a 6- 1 win for Lakers. Highlights of the game included 4 goals by Ash, 1 by Mike Byfield and a blazing tomahawk from Adam Cowcher. The Lakers team battled against the hard running opposition at the start of the game, however through well structured "presses" and talking through the team, proceeded to organise attacks from both sides of the field. Going in to halftime, 1 goal each, Lakers scored an early 2nd half goal to go ahead. Good running by the forwards resulted in a further 4 goals in the 2nd half, 3 field and 1 short corner. The team result is a good one, with good building from the back, through the midfield and taking our chances up front. Unfortunately, Armayne took a stick on the knee and was sent off to hospital, resulting in later surgery on the kneecap. We wish him well and a speedy recovery. Good win for Lakers........more wins to come.

- Jayson Eichstadt

Round 8

Riverside Lions 3 – Joondalup Lakers 4

18th June 2011 at Shenton Turf

What a game! There has been a great deal of controversy between the 2’s and Riverside Lions Top team, (probably because half of us used to play there).

It started out in usual fashion for us, a solid first 10 to 15 minutes without reward and a turn over, bang 1 goal down. We rallied, gained a little more composure a finally a goal back with ol’ Handbag (George) putting the first one in. Half time.

After discussing a game plan at half time, (win and stick it to the Pommy Imports, Yes Lions pay for Pom Imports), we came out firing on all fronts, sad part was so did Lions and we conceded a goal early to go down 2-1. That was all that was needed for the 2’s to change gears and really play hockey. The next 20 minutes saw a lot of forward pressure and movement, resulting in numerous shooting opportunities and about five short corners. Out of those short corners saw 3 goals put away and that really took the wind out of Lions. With four minutes to go Lions got a short corner and a goal, bringing the score back to 4-3. That was where it stayed, even with Lions having two short corners after the siren, we remained victorious.

Final Score 4 – 3 Lakers Win

Congrats to all players, not one passenger, a great team win and haven’t heard a song sang with that much gusto for a long time. WELL DONE

Round 7

UWA 0 – Joondalup Lakers 3

11th June 2011 at UWA Turf

The girls secured a top 4 position in fine fashion with a 3 goal win over Vic Park.

Our forwards had the usual benefit of remaining in our attacking half for most of the match. Tam Watts swept the ball in to the goal from a cross into the D, and Kayla Luk scored 2 goals by smashing the ball from the top of the D. The win was a great team effort, and was achieved through lots of talking and desperation in 50/50 contests. Well Done!

Round 8

Dale 2 – Joondalup Lakers 0

19th June 2011 at Aquinas Turf

Dale is currently the top team in the grade. We beat them 3-2 in the first round, giving them quite a shock and giving us a great start to the season.

We knew going into the game that these girls were going to play a tough, physical game of hockey and always come back and hassle you after they lose the ball. After conceding 2 scrappy goals in the first 5 minutes of the game, we held Dale off for the rest of the match and earned a number of short corners which we were unable to convert. Marking across the field was superb, and we also managed to keep the ball up our end for quite some time, especially during the second half. We did not sit back and defend after conceding 2 goals which was fantastic to see, and definitely picked up the intensity in comparison to previous matches.

Special mention must go to Kayla Luk, Emily Eckert, Sarah Easson, Nicole Cawcutt, Julene Verster and Nicky Easson who shut down the Dale midfield for most of the game, which mean they were no longer able to feed the ball to their main goal scorer (their high centre forward).

Thanks also to our goalie SJ who finally got to touch the ball – and did a great job! We are still in the top 4 and our aim is finals so bring on Newman in Round 9!

Welcome to more new players to the game of Hockey! We are still welcoming some new juniors players and extend a warm welcome to those new to the game and, particularly, to our club. We hope you already feel right at home and have made some good friends with the players in your teams!

Regional Trials for U13 and U15 players: These began this past week and we wish all our nominees the best of luck as they take part in the regional trials held on the UWA and Arena turfs. As a representative of our club’s finest we know you’ll do yourselves justice and make us proud! Good luck to you all!

Team Report: Nicky & Sarah’s team!

A special thank you: On behalf of Lakers, I’d like to thank Garry Moule, who marks out all the fields at Iluka every Friday, and Kelvin Shem, who sets up the temporary goals on a regular basis on a Saturday morning. Without these two hard working gentlemen our grounds at Iluka wouldn’t be ready for the Saturday morning games. Their willingness to help our club is very much appreciated!

J5/6 Boys Gold B11 Report

The start of the season for our boys has been a mixed bag and as yet we haven’t had any wins on the board, though it is encouraging to watch them progress into a team that will soon get the success they are working towards.

Round 1 saw us have a narrow loss to Whitfords, although the score of 2-0 didn’t reflect the game with some very close goal attempts that never quite made it into the net. On a sombre note, after the game one of our players suffered an injury to his eye that may be permanently damaged. Our thoughts are with him and his parents.

Round 2 was our toughest outing and was against Riverside Lions Maroon. On a positive, several players shone very brightly and though quite a number of goals were scored against us, our goalie had an outstanding game with more than 20 saves.

Round 3 against N C Raiders saw our first goal since grading – well done Shaun! This gave the boys a boost and though we went down 3-1 it was a great game for us. The cheers would have led others to believe we had won the series!

Our subsequent rounds have been similar with everyone trying their best. It is definite that we are moving closer to our first win and to see each player and their parents continue to offer positive support is fabulous. Throughout each round the players have developed their style and skill which is a direct result of the contribution from our 2 coaches, Nicky & Sarah, and our parents who know and play hockey.
