1 LAKOTA READER – Summer 2015 Chapter Chief’s Corner By David Craig What a year it has been so far! As a Lodge, we are very close to achieving Journey to Excellence Gold, the Order of the Arrow's self-measurement of success and activity. As a chapter, Lakota has seen meeting attendance redouble and participation at events markedly improve. As your elected chief, I would like to take pride in that fact, but must acknowledge that is is rather you, my brothers, who have made this possible. Now we have hit the midyear mark, let us not slow our pace! In July we have the Soap Box Derby and Cabrillo Day Camps, with fellowship in early August, and, of course, NOAC. For those of us not attending NOAC, I encourage you to look at the scheduled stops for ArrowTour, and attend the most convenient one. Take pride in our centennial celebrations and remember, "It starts with us." Many of you know that a significant leadership change will take place in the next month as some of our more experienced members head off to college or age out. They, too, once had no office and little experience with the Order of the Arrow, so have confidence in our brothers who step forward to lead in their stead. I wish you all a good summer and hope to see continued good times in Lakota Chapter. Chapter Chief’s Corner By David Craig

What a year it has been so far! As a Lodge, we are very close to achieving Journey to Excellence Gold, the

Order of the Arrow's self-measurement of success and activity. As a chapter, Lakota has seen meeting attendance

redouble and participation at events markedly improve. As your elected chief, I would like to take pride in that fact,

but must acknowledge that is is rather you, my brothers, who have made this possible. Now we have hit the

midyear mark, let us not slow our pace! In July we have the Soap Box Derby and Cabrillo Day Camps, with fellowship

in early August, and, of course, NOAC. For those of us not attending NOAC, I encourage you to look at the scheduled

stops for ArrowTour, and attend the most convenient one. Take pride in our centennial celebrations and remember,

"It starts with us."

Many of you know that a significant leadership change will take place in the next month as some of our more

experienced members head off to college or age out. They, too, once had no office and little experience with the

Order of the Arrow, so have confidence in our brothers who step forward to lead in their stead. I wish you all a good

summer and hope to see continued good times in Lakota Chapter.

Chapter Advisor’s Corner

by Kathie Affa

What a great week we had celebrating OA's

100 year of cheerful service at NOAC. The

theme was "it begins with us". What is "it"?

"It" is a world changing ripple effect. Each

one of us has the power to start a ripple that

will effect change in the world and it starts

with ourselves. One way you can start a

ripple to changing yourself and the world we

live in is to join the "Dare to do" campaign.

Simply pledge to do 100 selfless acts of

kindness in 100 days. This should be easy for those of us in scouting as

we already do our best to do a good turn daily. Post these acts of

kindness on social media tagged as #dare to do, and let’s watch the

effect we can have. Check out Lakota's Facebook page for pictures of

some of the events.

Congratulations to Lakota

Chapter’s newest Vigil Honors by

Matthew Curnutte At this past Conclave five arrowmen from Siwinis lodge

were awarded the Vigil honor, with two of them being from Lakota.

Matthew Curnutte and David Craig were surprised and bewildered

Saturday night to be presented this honor and now join and very

small group of members who have and continue to devote cheerful

service to the chapter and lodge.

The Vigil honor does not have a set list of requirements like

the Brotherhood honor or the Eagle Scout does. Vigil candidates

are thought through very thoroughly and are awarded this honor

after months of debate and the decision that they will continue to

serve cheerfully.

Being awarded Vigil is a

huge deal and we congratulate

Matthew and David as well as

thank them for their hard work

and devotion.

The Order of the Arrow is youth-led. Will you run for Lakota Chapter Office?

Chapter Chief ** David Craig The Chapter Chief leads

the chapter. He runs all

the chapter and officer

meetings for Lakota. He

controls all of the

officers for Lakota. He

also updates the lodge

information about the

progress of our chapter.

Vice Chief ** The Vice Chief is one of

the coolest positions. He

gets to do a little bit of

everything, but when

things go wrong, it’s the

Chief’s fault!

Sachem ** Matthew Curnutte He is in charge of collecting

and approving the articles

that you are currently

reading in this here

newsletter. After they're

approved they are sent off

to the guy who then puts it

all together.

Treasurer ** Austin Smith The Chapter Treasurer is

also the Treasurer for our

Crew

1994. The amount of

money is sizable. He also

proposes a yearly budget

and tracks our financial

performance.

Hunter Niko Breznikar This is perhaps the toughest

job in the chapter. The

Hunter is responsible for

training, scheduling and

organizing the

OA election teams that hold

the elections where OA

candidates are elected to

OA.

Elangomat Daniel Casillas The Elangomat is

responsible for encouraging

newly elected Arrowmen to

attend Ordeal and continue

with the chapter thereafter.

The job is crucial to the

success of our chapter.

Niamat

The Niamat picks out

where the Elangomat

leaves off. He encourages

Arrowmen, having been

with the chapter for 10

months, to attend the

Brotherhood ceremony.

Vigil Lucas Curnutte Job is to work hard to

make sure those who

deserve it attain the

highest honor in the

Order of the Arrow—the

Vigil Honor.

Medicine Man Lucas Curnutte You work closely with the

adviser and team to make

sure the ceremonies that

you see at Ordeals and

Camporees are the best

you'll ever see.

Messenger Ross Piscitello The Messenger is the

chapter’s secretary,

recording business

decisions and activities that

occur during the CEC

(executive committee)

meetings

Trading Post Jonathan Enge The Trading Post is

responsible for buying

refreshments, then selling

them at District events,

such as Camporee. It’s a

great opportunity for

scouts with an

entrepreneurial spirit!

** ATTENTION **

The Chief, Vice Chief, Sachem, and Treasurer are all elected

positions as opposed to appointed like the rest of the

positions. Elections for these positions are approaching

fast! Get ahead of the game but submitting your application

to your Chief at the next chapter meeting. These forms can

be found at: http://pacificabsa.org/oa/
