2012-13 Season Preview

Members of the 2012-13 Seahawks basketball team include, front from left, Ty Allen, Tre Bennett, Korbin McClain, Josh Cormier, Garth Brown, andKieran Woods; and back from left, D.C. Stallworth, Evan White, Ivan Jelencic, Anthony Allen, Evan Sims, Travis Wildgoose and Jamal Shabazz.

New faces abound on 2012-13 Seahawks rosterA season after earning the title of NJCAA

Region 14 co-Champions, the Lamar State Col-lege-Port Arthur Seahawks will start from scratch… literally.

From the coaching staff to the players report-ing in Fall 2012, the Seahawks have a completelynew cast of characters.

Coach Lance Madison started his tenure atLamar State with a blank slate and immediatelybegan searching for the country’s best juco play-ers to fill out his roster. Now, Madison has 12players who are hoping hope to continue the tra-dition of winning established at Lamar State.

Madison went hunting for both athleticallyand academically talented players and set his siteson athletes far and wide, signing as close to homeas Port Arthur and Silsbee and as far away asCroatia and the Bahamas.

Josh Cormier, a 5-foot-8 point guard fromPort Arthur Memorial High School, will beamong those counted on for leading the offense

on each trip up the court. Cormier was not on theroster a year ago but has spent some time with thepast coaching staff in its development of theteam. Madison says Cormier is likely the fastestplayer on the team and comes with great creden-tials. During his senior season at Memorial,Cormier averaged 12 points, eight assists, four re-bounds and three steals. He was the MVP of theannual James Gamble Tournament and was listedas a Top 30 Prospect by several sources after hisAAU basketball performances with the PortArthur Heat.

“Josh is a competitor and has the qualities Ilike in a point guard in the Seahawks program,”said Coach Madison. “He can push the ball intransition, makes good decisions running theteam, can be a lock-down defender, and has theability to score the basketball.”

Signed from nearby Silsbee, D.C. Stallworthis a 6-4 guard/forward who is one of the best localplayers Southeast Texas has produced in recent

memory. Stallworth spent a semester as a red-shirt at Cedar Valley College in Lancaster, Texas.Stallworth was a four-year starter at Silsbee, where he earned all-district, all-region and all-state honors. He averaged 20 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks a gameduring his senior season.

“D.C. is a versatile player who can play theguard and forward positions and can defend anyposition on the floor,” Madison said. “He is ahard-working, hard-nosed, fierce competitor whocan do it all on both ends of the floor.”

Croatian Ivan Jelencic stands 6-9 and willplay power forward and center for the Seahawks.Described as having skill and toughness, Jelencicis expected to be a threat in the paint and fromthe perimeter. He comes to Port Arthur after asolid showing for the under-17 Croatian NationalTeam and the GKK Šibenik Basketball Club.

“Ivan is a multi-dimensional forward who

can play three different positions,” Madison said.“He is a strong rebounder, can score in the post, shoot the perimeter jumper, and handles the ballwell. He has the European post skills that will bea perfect fit in our system and allow us to stretchdefenses.”

Another candidate for center is 7-1 AnthonyAllen, a graduate of Bassick High School inBridgeport, Conn. Allen, the first-ever 7-footer toplay basketball for Lamar State, has been playingorganized basketball for four years but showedenough talent that he was signed out of highschool by the University of Ohio. He instead red-shirted at the College of Southern Idaho andtransferred to Lamar State for his first season onthe collegiate floor.

He led Bassick HS to two state champi-onships in 2008 and 2010 and continues to de-velop in the paint as he heads into his first seasonfor the Seahawks.

“He is a developing post presence who isvery athletic, runs the floor well, and can be agame changer,” Madison said. “I look for An-thony to score in the post, chase down rebounds, block shots, and be a force in the paint for thenext two seasons. If he improves his footworkand continues to develop he has the potential tobe a big-time Division I player.”

Coming from the Bahamas are 6-4 shootingguard Garth Brown and 6-5 forward Travis Wild-goose, both graduates of Tabernacle BaptistChristian Academy.

Brown left Tabernacle to attend as an inter-national student at Athens Christian in Atlantawhere he was named Northeast Georgia Player ofthe Year in his one season playing basketball inthe U.S. He averaged 27 points and 9.2 reboundsa game and was named to the 8A All-Region andGeorgia Sportswriters All-State teams.

Wildgoose led his team in the Bahamas tothe GBSSAA Championship in 2011, scoring 17points in the title game. He also showed his ultra-athleticism by winning the Arby’s Classic SlamDunk Classic (Bristol, TN) while dunking with afootball helmet and shoulder-pads in the finals.

“Travis is a strong, multi-dimensional playerwho can play either forward position. He canscore in transition, attacks the basket, finisheswith thunderous dunks, and can really chasedown rebounds. He is an aggressive; attacking-style player on both ends of the court and willbring some toughness to our team,” said Madi-

son. “Garth will bring plenty of high-level play-ing experience and an International flavor to ourprogram. He was a star performer as a prep playerin Georgia and will be a great fit in our system. He can attack the basket off the bounce, handlesit well, has a nice jump shot, shoots the 3, anduses his athleticism to chase rebounds and be atenacious defender.”

Charles “Tre” Bennett III, a 5-10 point guardfrom Houston, spent two years at Milby HighSchool before joining the storied program atYates for his senior season. During his one yearat Yates, he had one of the best performances inthe state, scoring 46 points with eight rebounds, nine assists and eight steals … in one game. Hewas a three-year all-district performer, averaging20 points, eight assists, four rebounds and foursteals his senior season. He also spent one seasonat Charis Prep in North Carolina and was part ofa national championship team for the 2011-12season.

“He is a very versatile point guard who canact as a floor general and create scoring opportu-nities for his teammates or finish himself,” saidMadison. “He handles it well, can attack the rim,

shoot a pull-up, or knock down the open 3. I re-ally like the defensive intensity and toughness hewill bring to the floor every night.”

Jamal Shabazz is a 6-6 forward fromPflugerville High School and has the opportunityto be a real impact player as a freshman Seahawk, according to Madison. “He has the potential tobe a go-to-guy as a freshman. He is a multi-di-mensional wing scorer who can attack the rim,has good range on his jumper, chases rebounds, and has triple-double ability,” Madison said.

Shabazz was selected as all-district twice,all-state and was an honor student atPflugerville. He played for the Texas Thunderand the Austin ATX AAU programs, playing inseveral high-profile tournaments across the na-tion. MaxPreps had him ranked as the ninth bestsmall forward in the state and 51st in the nation.

Evan Sims comes to Lamar State as a trans-fer from Eastern Oklahoma State where he av-eraged four points and four rebounds as a truefreshman. He was an all-district performer, av-eraging nearly a double-double during his seniorseason at Cypress Springs High School in Hous-ton. At 6-8, he has the ability to play the powerforward or center positions.

“Evan is a solid athlete and is a high-motorguy in the post. He is a great rebounder, canscore in the paint, has good range on his jumper, and handles the ball well,” Madison said. “He ismulti-dimensional, can be a scorer on the sec-ondary cut after setting a ball screen, runs thefloor well, and can finish with power. Evan hasgood footwork and great hands, which are thetwo key ingredients to being a successful offen-sive player in the post.”

Evan White hails from San Antonio wherehe graduated from East Central High School. A6-3 shooting guard, he was the first player tocommit to Lamar State this recruiting season.

He was a standout player at East Central, averaging 16 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks his senior season. Heearned multiple all-district accolades, finishedninth in San Antonio in scoring his senior sea-son, was MVP of the San Antonio ISD (LargeDivision) Tournament, and led his team to theClass 5A playoffs each of his three varsity sea-sons.

PREVIEW, from page 7

Seahawks win first-ever regular-season championshipAt the start of the 2011-2012 men’s basketball

season at Lamar State College-Port Arthur, therewere plenty more questions than answers.

But as the season unfolded, a group of individ-ual stars melded into a core team that led the col-lege to yet another championship banner, earningthe NJCAA Region 14 regular season champi-onship for the first time in school history.

The Seahawks provided a constant flair for thedramatic, winning several of their late-seasongames by a point here and a point there. As the finalgame of the regular season arrived, a tilt againstTyler College, the Hawks found their backs to thewall as they sought another championship ring.

Beating the Apaches in Tyler with a champi-onship on the line was a daunting task and the dif-ficulty of that effort was seen in a 14-point deficitin the first half of that game. Even as the game woreon into the second half, Lamar State struggled, trailing by double-figures late.

But, as was the trend throughout the season, the Hawks managed an 11-0 run to retake the leadand held on for a 70-66 win and a share of the Re-gion 14 championship with Paris College.

“To win back-to-back championships and todo that here in Tyler is really magical,” Cross said.“To win the tournament last year was a huge thingfor the program and the college. Winning the reg-ular season championship is really more difficultbecause you have to play a 19-game schedule. It’slike they say, the cream rises to the top and we’reat the top this season.”

The Hawks reached the Region 14 tournamentas the No. 2 seed, which put them face-to-face withTyler again, on the Apaches’ home court again, andLamar State battled to make sure the outcomewould be the same.

In an emotional game in front of a predomi-nantly Tyler fan base, the Hawks and Apaches bat-tled even until right at the end when Lamar Stateedged out and won the game 62-58.

The Seahawks moved on to meet Navarro inthe semifinals as they attempted to repeat as the Re-gion 14 representative to the NJCAA NationalTournament in Hutchinson, Kan.

While the Hawks had all the talent in theworld, the luck they relied on to a great degree thisseason finally ran out. Navarro was a team LamarState had beaten at the buzzer earlier in the season. This time, Navarro would not be denied, buildingas much as a 22-point lead early in the game andwalking away with a 78-65 victory.

The Hawks’ season was through but as is usual

with championship teams, the post-season acco-lades were piled on as proof positive that LamarState’s championship run was as much an individ-ual effort as it was a team collaboration.

Sophomores Elijah Pittman and Brandon Pe-ters earned second team all-region honors, whilealso earning third team South Zone all conferencenods. Freshman Shondel Stewart was named hon-orable mention all conference South Zone.

The mascot and colors were selected bya committee of Lamar-Port Arthur students, staff, faculty and administrators that metseveral times during 2004.

The need for a mascot arose when TheTexas State University System Board of Re-gents approved women’s softball and men’sbasketball programs at Lamar-Port Arthur tobegin at the start of the fall semester in 2004.

Dr. Sam Monroe, president of Lamar-Port Arthur, joined LSC-PA Athletic Direc-tor Bill Worsham, basketball coach DonBryson, softball coach Vance Edwards andTexas State University System regent KentAdams to unveil the new school mascot, col-ors and sports logo during a public event inthe Carl Parker Center at the college.

The Seahawks name has a historicalconnection to Port Arthur, Monroe said. Port

Arthur was the home of the Sea-hawks professional baseball teamduring the early 1950s. The Sea-hawks played in the Gulf CoastLeague and won the league champi-onship in 1952..

The college’s athletic teams willwear uniforms featuring the new school col-ors – navy blue and columbia blue.
