GlossaryHost computer: The computer to which you will connect in a PCsync session.

Client computer: The computer from which you will connect to the host computer in a PCsync session.

Synchronization: The procedure that copies the most recently changed version of a fi le from one folder to another. The outcome of synchronization will depend on the direction of the transfer and the confl ict resolution rules that you specify.

Confl ict: A condition which occurs when you at-tempt to synchronize in the direction of a fi lethat has changed since the last synchroniza-tion. PCsync will handle confl icts (i.e. overwrite, keep, or copy the fi le) according to the rules that you specify in the synchronization job settings.

Synchronize FoldersPCsync allows you to automatically syn-chronize the contents of two folders lo-cated on the same or on different com-puters. Features include:

• One-way and two-way synchronization.Copy the changed fi les from one folder to the other, or copy the fi les from eachfolder to the other.

• File confl ict resolution according to the rules set by the user. Set the rules for synchronizing the folders in which one or both matching fi les have changed since the last synchronization.

• Synchronization scheduled by the user.Set the day and time to repeat a synchro-nization job automatically.

• Smart synchronization. If following a synchronization, you replace a fi le with its older version in one of the folders, PCsync will not simply replace it with the newer fi le version from the other folder. As you prepare the session, you can direct PCsync to automatically skip, copy the newer ver-sion, or to overwrite the fi le. You can also choose to resolve confl icts manually while the session is running.

The Four Steps of Synchronization

1. Create a synchronization job

a. In the “Connections” pane, click on an existing connection.

b. Click on ,the “New Sync Job” button. If you have not yet connected to the host in this PCsync session, click Yes in the “Make Connection” box.

2. Select folder pairs

In the “Adding Folders” window, fi nd the folders you wish to synchronize. The names of the folders in each pair will ap-pear in the lower pane.

3. Specify synchronization options

a. In the “Synchronization Options” win-dow,

• Specify the direction of synchroniza-tion and the rules for handling con-fl icts.

• Add another pair of folders for synch-ronization by clicking Add Folder Pair.

Click Next when ready.

Synchronize Folders (continued)b. In the “Scheduler” window, select:

“Prescheduled” to specify the day and time for PCsync to repeat this job automatically. In the “Account” and “Password” text boxes, type in the name and password required to log into your Windows computer, if applicable.

“Manual” if you do not wish to repeat the job automatically.

Click Next when ready.

c. In the next window,

type in the name for this synchronization job and check additional options, such as:

• Include only matched pair: By selecting this option, you tell PCsync to ignore any

fi les that do not have matching fi les in the other folder.

• Include subfolders: Keep this option se-lected to use the current job’s synchro-nization rules on the subfolders within the primary folders.

• Include previously skipped fi les: If you have previously synchronized this folder pair and chose to skip certain fi les, se-lecting this option will apply the synchro-nization rules to these fi les.

When ready, click Done.

4. Run the synchronization job

a. In the “Synchronization Jobs” pane of the main PCsync window,

click on the job you just created.

b. In the summary window,

review your folder selections and click Run.

Page 10Laplink PCsync® Quick Start Guide

However, if you have run the job before and have made changes to the fi les since then, confl icts may arise.

If, in step 3(a), you selected Always check with user, resolve the confl ict as follows:

(i) Click Resolve.

(ii) In the “Resolving Confl ict” window,

specify the rules for resolving the confl ict, and click Next to continue to the next con-fl ict. Repeat until you can no longer click Next, then click OK.

After you complete this step, you should no longer see the confl ict sign for any fi le pair.

(iii) When ready, click Run in the “Run Synchronization Job” window.

(iv) After the job completes, click Close:

How Synchronization Works

In the above diagram, the left-most column shows the state of folders A and B following a synchroni-zation. You make changes as shown in the middle column and run the same synchronization job as before. The outcome of your next synchronization will depend on the direction and confl ict resolution rules you have chosen:

,

• File “1”: PCsync will not do anything because the fi le has not changed in A or B since the last synchronization.

• File “2”: In folder A, you replaced this fi le with its older version. PCsync will treat the older version as the one you want to keep, and will update the fi le in folder B with the copy from A.

• File “3”: In folder B, you replaced this fi le with its older version. Synchronizing in the direc-tion of the changed fi le will create a confl ict. PCsync will use a confl ict resolution rule you have specifi ed here.

• Since the last synchronization, you have placed different copies of fi le “4” in both fold-ers. Again, this will create a confl ict. Because PCsync does not know which version of the fi le you want to keep, it will use a confl ict res-olution rule you have specifi ed here.

• ”5_local” and “5_remote” do not match. Unless you specify to not copy fi les that don’t match, PCsync will copy “5_local” to folder B.

• File “1”: No changes.

• File “2”: confl ict.

• File “3”: Update the copy in folder A with the copy from folder B.

• File “4”: confl ict.

• Copy “5_remote” to folder A.

• File “1”: no changes.

• File “2”: Update the copy in folder A with the copy from folder B.

• File “3”: Update the copy in folder B with the copy from folder A.

• File “4”: confl ict.

• “5_local”: copy from A to B.

• “5_remote”: copy from B to A.

PCsync manages the fi les you delete just like it manages the fi les you change. If fol-lowing synchronization, you deleted fi le “2” instead of replacing it with an older version, subsequent A->B synchronization would de-lete fi le “2” from folder B.

A

B

Both folders have been synchronized before

A: Replace fi les 2 and 4, add “5_local”

B: Replace fi les 3 and 4, add “5_remote”

Following a bidirectionalsynchronization. All confl icts were resolved by copying the

newer version of a fi le.
