Determining the length of the travelling distance LS.

The dimensions of the cable chain in relationship to thedimensions of cables/hoses.

Determining the radius of curvature of the cable chain inrelationship to the flexibility characteristics of cables/hoses.

Verifying the self-supporting capacity of the cable chain inrelationship to the weight per metre of cables/hoses.

The choice of cable chain should not only bebased on a mathematical calculation of certainfactors but should consider and analysecarefully all the available data. The followinginformation will be provide a basic help inmaking the right decision.

  • For electric cables a clearance of at least 10% between theplacement of the cable and its diameter has to beguaranteed; for hydraulic hoses the clearance should be atleast 20%.

Avoid placing cables/hoses that have different sheath finishesso that friction can be eliminated.(e.g. hydraulic cables and hoses).

In the application of several cables/hoses it is preferable toavoid them rubbing each other by placing them singularly inthe appropriate space and separating them from each otherby the separators. If this is not possible, verify that theinternal space does not allow the rubbing of thecables/hoses. (H< D).

Place cables/hoses in a symmetrical way according to theirdimensions and weight placing the largest and heaviestexternally and the smaller and lighter internally.

For further information on how to install cables/hosessee page 198.

To guarantee that cable chain functionsproperly and to avoid any damage to thecables/hoses within, certain criteria concerningthe placement must be followed:

    Self-Supporting Capacity

necessary to use the appropriate support rollers(see page 30), in order to confirm chainreliability in exceptional applications. All the H-heights reported into this catalogueare not including any Z-value due to thepreload, therefore, whenever limitations to themaximum allowable heigth are required, youshould refer to Brevetti Stendalto's TechnicalDptm.Brevetti Stendalto chains, thanks to theirspecific construction, reach remarkably highvalues of self-supporting capacity andacceleration with long periods of motion, reaching millions of cycles. For particular applications (e.g. vertical travel),the chains can be provided without pre-set.

A fundamental element in cable chains is thepre-set Z (Fig. A).This determines the self-supporting capacity, acharacteristic which allows the cable chain tosupport not only its own weight, but also theweight of the cables/hoses placed in it and tokeep its parallel or slightly curved upwardposition (Fig. B).The diagram of self-supporting capacity (Fig. C),indicates the weight relation of cables/hoses perlinear meter to the lengths of self-supportingchain travel. The red-area indicates the differencebetween min/max chain widths, while the widestversion has the lowest self-support capacity. With the application of cable chains with and weights not included in the area of thediagram of self-supporting capacity, its

    Determining the Chain length

Fixed point at the centre of total travel.

The chain length (L) is calculated by summarising the half stroke to the nominal value (M)of the bending radius. The value is then rounded up the multiply of the chain's pitch for nylon cable chains and to anodd multiply for steel chains.

The use of standard cable chains for verticalapplications could result in difficulties due to thepre-set. we therefore recommend to specify:without pre-set for vertical applicationswhenordering. By doing this the cable chain will bedelivered to you without pre-set.

Vertical ApplicationsThe problems related to vertical applicationsare solved by using Brevetti Stendalto cablechains. It is however necessary to respect thefollowing:

If the application only concerns one vertical movement thecable chain does not need any particular support.

The placement of the cable/hoses is very important to ensurethe application works properly. Cables/hoses have to be fixedat both ends using the appropriate accessories so as not tomake their weight disturb the cable chain. In this type ofapplication the cable chain should only guide thecables/hoses during their movement.

When applying the cable chain in this way some support isneeded to avoid the chain to unbalance itself outwardly.Generally the cable chain must be supported both on thefixed and mobile points.

If the cable chain also moves across and/or longitudinally, certain measures have to be taken laterally. For specialapplications, frames with completely closed guiding systemsare available.

  • 21

    Going Further

Horizontal Applications on TheirSidesBrevetti Stendalto cable chains can bemounted on their sides.

Particular attention should be drawn to determine the sectionof the cable chain, in fact, the mounting on its side of thechain means that cables/hoses have a tendency of bunchingtowards the ground and being squashed. To avoid this, there are special spacers which are positionedbetween the separators or otherwise special split aluminium orPVC cross pieces to be applied.

For particularly long applications a guiding channel can bedesigned.

This kind of mounting becomes necessary when there is alimited space upwards and mounting the chain normallywould take up too much space.

If there is no possibility for a plane to support the cable chainduring its movement, Brevetti Stendalto chains can beapplied without support taking into consideration thefollowing factors:- total travel distance LS- added weight- velocity and acceleration- frequency of usage

For this kind of application, it is recommended to discusswith our technical office.

To make the movement easier and to reduce any friction onthe cable chain, special changeable anti-friction skids orpivoting wheels have been designed.

Sliding series is the integrated sliding skid whichpermit the chains to slide on themselvesreducing the friction due to the specialpolymers used. The dimensions of the skid allow the chain tokeep itself stable in applications with highvelocities. On request its possible to produce cable chainswith special polyamides for applying inparticularly aggressive environments. The triple pins guarantee more reliability andstrength even in applications with the addedweight being very high. The chains in the Slidingseries have been tested using torsion, wear andtear tests passing the tensile yield stress withextremely good results, above high normalvalues (e.g. SR318 21000 N).

Long Horizontal Travel DistanceCable chains are used more frequently on longtravel distances as a valid alternative to thetraditional systems of conductor bars or tofestoon systems, and offer the followingadvantages:

The possibility of the combined transportation of hydraulic cables/tubes.

The possibility of use also in criticalenvironments (humidity, textile dust, negative chemical and atmospheric components etc.).

High velocities and values of acceleration. Notably shorter installation times. Drastic reduction in the time taken for

    maintenance.

The special aspect of the cable chains in the

In these applications, thechain without self-supporting capacity, slides inits own guiding channels. For the first half of the traveldistance the chain slides onitself, whilst in the secondhalf it is supported by itsown rollers or plates forsliding.

In double chainapplications, the chains slide on themselves in bothdirections.

Guide Channels for SlidingFor good results when using cable chain in anapplication with a long travelling distance it isnecessary to respect the following instructionswhen installing the guide channel for sliding:

Guide channel for chainsof the Sliding series.

Verify that the sides are aligned properly to avoid any internaledges in the guide channel which could disturb the cablechains route.

Verify that the plane on which the guide channel for sliding ismounted is perfectly aligned and smooth.

Verify that the distance between the guide channel forsliding and the towing arm is the same for the wholetravelling distance.

  • 25

How to Install the Cable Chainsin the Guide ChannelFor a perfect installation of the cable chain in theguide channel you should take the followingsteps::

Install the cable chain with the standard end brackets at thefixed point and with the movable end brackets at the movingpoint respecting the height listed in the catalogue.

Reduce as much as possible the distance between the fixedpoint of the cable chain and the starting point of the rollers orsliding plane.

In the case of a double chain application ensure that thedistance between the two fixed points doesnt exceed 500mm.

Install the mobile point of the cable chain aligning it exactly tothe longitudinal travel distance in such a way so that duringits movement it does not touch the internal part of the guidechannel (Fig. A).

To facilitate this operation Brevetti Stendalto has developedand created a special movable end bracket which guaranteesa perfect alignment between the chain and the towing arm(Fig. B).

PROTECTION series, can be supplied with thiscounter-radius. Generally the chains with count-er-radius are used to resolve the problems rela-tive to rotations where, in this case, it would notbe possible to use cable chains from theROBOT series.

Rotating HorizontallyFor certain applications it necessary that thecable chains perform an opposite movementfrom that determined by the radius of thecurvature (counter-radius chains). All BrevettiStendalto chains, except those from the

With the use of counter-radius chains it is possible to createrotations both on small and large equipment (e.g. parabolic antennas, rotating tables, cranes, telescopes).

For applications with rotations up to 180 it is possible to useonly one cable chain. For a correct usage it should beinstalled with a guide housing.

To facilitate the sliding and reduce the friction of the cablechain, special changeable skids or pivoting wheels are takeninto account. With this kind of application it is also possible to rotatevertically.Seen the particular aspects of these applications we adviseyou to contact and consult our technical office.

For applications with rotations over 180 it is necessary touse two cable chains. For a correct usage they should beguided both internally and externally. A special inner movableframe, mounted on anti-friction skids or pivoting wheels incombination to the guide housing guarantees the rotation.

second have been developed. The chainsfrom the ROBOT series, like all BrevettiStendalto chains, can be modified for work inspecial applications. When the use of one cable chain is notsufficient to contain all the cables/hoses itspossible to use several chains in the sameapplication to increase the spaceto hold them.

Rotation with ROBOT Type ChainsIn its continuous technological evolution,Brevetti Stendalto has revolutionised since1989 the concept of circular chains introducingthe chains from the ROBOT series that, dueto the particular construction of the links, permit them to rotate up to 540.During the long course of technical experience, applications with rotations up to 600 per

-Right type with right fixed point chain (B)

The chains from the ROBOT series are self-supporting andthey do not need any support up to 200. For applicationswith rotations exceeding that value it is necessary to use itsown appropriate accessories. To reduce the problems oftaking up too much space which generally is the case withthe supports, especially on robots, Brevetti Stendalto hasdeveloped a series of supports which are capable of solvingthe problem.
