My Japanese lodger, who has been with me since May, has decided to goself-catering for her final month. As far as I can ascertain, this involveseating many sandwiches, accompanied by copious amounts of green
tea. Not a great deal of catering required then...My other lodger, who arrived on Tuesday, is a Group Leader from Italy who’s
stayed with me many times before. I had a bit of a memory failure as far as hewas concerned, and prepared a home-made pasta meal, followed by a delicioushome-made cake for the evening of his arrival. I had totally forgotten that thisparticular guest subsists on a dubious diet of cigarettes and whatever thehouse ale the King & Queen is serving these days. He smokes like a stack ofchimneys, as opposed to just one chimney stack and likes staying with mebecause I’m not too precious about having smokers in the house, The Boyfriendbeing a major offender in this respect. My Italian guest seemed very impressedwith my huge conch-shell ashtray, sourced on a beach in West Africa, althoughI’m sure no conch shell in existence would be big enough to house all his butts.
On the same night, The Big Daughter refused my offer of dinner and The BigSon sent me a last minute text saying he was eating out with his girlfriend,accompanied by a smiley face. As The Small Daughter and I tucked into pastaand cake meant for five people, my face was far from smiley.
There is a good side to allthis as, when The SmallDaughter is not here (she’s at afestival this weekend), I do nothave to make dinner foranyone and am now largelyfree from the drudgery of thekitchen for the next threeweeks. Although I love my foodand actually secretly enjoycooking, I simply can’t bebothered to prepareanything extravagant forone. when I met Ben Copper of NutshellConstruction during a tour of Brook Placenear Horsham.
Brook Place dates from the early 17thcentury, if not earlier, and was once part ofBrook Farm. The main building features twoprincipal storeys on an irregular E-shapedplan with roof rooms above. The site wasknown as ‘Birchen Ersh’ which translates as‘the good land overgrown with birch trees’. Isaw little in the way of birches butdiscovered an abundance of oak – within thehouse itself.
Brook Place owes much of its current formto famous Sussex architect FrederickWheeler who lovingly transformed whatwas a working farmhouse into a grandcountry home with an Arts & Craftstheme in 1911 after a period ofneglect. The building’s oak windowswere certainly added at this timethough much is unclear, despite thecommissioning of a detailedOxford Archaeology survey.
I visited with Ben during thecourse of a huge works projectwhich his firm is carrying outthat involves refurbishing thestone roof, restoring the oakframe, rearranging the interiorlayout and adding a green oakkitchen extension.
The exterior consists of avariety of materials includingoriginal oak beams, limerender, sandstone ashlars, hung tiles and brick. Matching Roman numerals onadjoining pieces of oak show how carpenters once planned their work. Carefulplanning now means that any oak that has to be removed is being recycled aspegs and fillets during repairs, so that the amount of new oak needed is keptto a minimum.
Due to the presence of one of the most thorough scaffolding installations Ihave ever seen, I did not know what Brook Place actually looked like until Iarrived home and looked it up on the computer. It is a fine building withimpressive gables and a most curious roof that is made up of a variety ofsizes of Horsham Stone slabs. Small holes allow bats inside and a bat-friendlylining helps them to cling on. Nushell’s attention to detail is second to none.

In a world of low-borrowingcosts and high-rentalyields for those lucky
enough to have spare cash fordeposits to purchase property(and good income history tosecure buy-to-let mortgages)now is a good time to buyhouses for rental income.
Traditionally, the mostlucrative income of the rentalmarkets is in student lets,particularly in Brighton wherethroughout term time you canbe almost guaranteed a keenaudience; moreover, as we'refortunate enough to live insuch a desirable areastudents often choose to stayhere throughout theChristmas, summer andEaster holidays rather thangive up their rented rooms orhouses; which means few voidperiods for landlords.
We’re often asked toprepare houses for letting to students. This can sometimes mean a very quicklick of paint and the provision of basic amenities to, more often recently, fullrefurbishments of dilapidated houses, bought at auction by discerningentrepreneurs keen to maximise the return on their investment.
These refurbishments usually require very basic, functional fittings that aredesigned to stand up to frequent use but not necessarily be the most pretty orstylish. There isn’t much point in specifying a Grohe-equipped bathroom for astudent house, the cost of which will eat into the all-too-important bottom line.
There are a wide selection of firms who can supply good quality buteconomic kitchens, bathrooms and storage solutions that will stand up toyears of use but won’t necessarily be the most aesthetically pleasing.
Here are a few basic tips to ensure you’re maximising your profit whileproviding adequate fixtures and fittings:• Avoid real timber worktops: you’ll never get a house full of students to
prevent unwiped water from staining them let alone expecting your tenantsto oil it four times a year. There are some really excellent composite orlaminate versions at less than £20 a linear metre that are easily replaced ifanything untoward should happen.
• Try to avoid installing showers with concealed valves or pans (toilets) withconcealed cisterns. These items are a nightmare to repair when they gowrong and can lead to ripping out tiles just to see where the pipes andgubbins might be leaking. Concealed valves, even the expensive ones, arenotorious for failing shortly after their warranty runs out. Close-couple pansand surface-mounted valves are perfectly acceptable and will ensure anyrequired maintenance can be carried out very quickly.
• Try to provide as much built-in alcove storage as you can afford to havemade. Also a basic kit of vacuum cleaner, mop and bucket, broom anddustpan etc will ensure at least the most conscientious member of thehousehold will be able to keep the place clean. And don't forget to provide aplace to store that kit too. Under the stairs (if you’ve not already providedan under stairs loo) is a great place to store such items.

Answer from Mr Charles Zammit, Endocrine Surgeon at theMontefiore Hospital:
An overactive thyroid, or hyperthyroidism, to give it itsmedical name is a condition where the thyroid gland goes intooverdrive and produces too much of the hormone thyroxine.This hormone controls your body’s natural functions and an
excess of it can make your metabolism too fast. Although the condition can occur in people of all ages, it is most
common among 20–40 year olds*. Women are 10 times more likely to havean overactive thyroid gland than men and it is estimated that around onein 50 women in England are affected**.
A usual symptom of hyperthyroidism is weight loss despite an increasedappetite. You may feel anxious, tired and irritable, experience palpitations,breathlessness and have difficulty in sleeping. You may also notice aswelling on your throat. This is known as a goitre.
Once you have had a positive diagnosis for hyperthyroidism, the firstline of treatment is usually medication. However, if your thyroid doesn’trespond well to the medicine, or your thyroid is very enlarged, then surgery may be the best option for you. All options will be discussed with a specialist.
The type of operation will depend on what is causing your thyroid to beoveractive. You may only need a nodule or part of a lobe removing, but insome cases it is best to remove it altogether- a thyroidectomy. Thisprocedure will eliminate the chance of the condition coming back, but youwould need to take thyroxine supplements for the rest of your life***.
Surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic through a smallincision in your throat. Your surgeon will try to ensure that it follows thenatural crease in your neck. Some surgeons can perform thyroidectomiesthrough keyhole surgery, which leaves just a tiny scar. This procedure cansometimes be done as a day case, so you might not need to spend thenight in hospital.

“Improvements – Are They Worth It?”
A recent survey suggests that the average homebuyerspends about £4,000 on home improvements within four
months of moving. These changes are typically things that had littlebearing on the decision whether or not to buy the property, but moreabout making a house into a home.
Examples include ripping out a rather dated bathroom suite, changing thelight fittings, adding a garden shed, replacing kitchen unit doors and paintingthe walls a different colour.
