St. Peter Armenian ChurchAnnual BazaarWATERVLIET– The women of St. Peter Armenian Church in Watervliet, have been working tirelessly for weeks preparing gourmet fl avors for the annual Holiday Bazaar over the week-end of December 7 and 8. This two-day event will feature a wide variety of popular Armenian foods to stock up your freez-er, family and musical entertainment, local vendors, and a cash and children’s raffl e. Some of the ethnic food items prepared for both eat in or take out include dolma (lamb stuffed peppers), porov kufteh (large stuffed meatballs), lahmejune (Armenian pizza), string cheese, hummus (chick pea dip), babaganoush (eggplant dip), cheese beoreg (cheese and fi lo triangles), and yalanchi (stuffed grape leaves). Delicious dessert items, such as paklava, cheoreg (rolls), and kurabia (sugar & butter cook-ies) will be sold in the “Hye Bake Shop” along with Califor-nia dried fruits and homemade jams. Santa will be on hand for exciting photo opportunities the entire weekend. In addition, Victor the Clown will provide free balloon art creations for the children, and Phil Singer will offer black & white caricature sketches for $5. A variety of vendors will display their handi-work while the St. Peter Bookstore will feature amazing and unique Armenian-made items in time for the gift-giving season. And to help prepare those gifts to be placed under the tree, there will be a “Wrap a Gift, Give a Gift” free gift-wrapping station offered. Just leave a donation that will be put towards assist-ing families in need during the Holiday season. The Women’s Guild of the St. Peter Armenian Church sponsors this Bazaar, and this year they are excited to present a newly-published Ar-menian Cookbook that will be on sale for $20. Another great gift idea for family, friends and co-workers! The event is open to the public with free parking and admission. Sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information, contact the Church offi ce at 518-274-3673.

Although poinsettias are most often associated with the holiday season, they are actu-ally tropical plants. In spite of their origins, poinsettias can thrive during the holiday sea-son and even last long after the holidays have come and gone.

Poinsettias are native to Mex-ico and Central America. Az-tecs called the plant cuetlaxo-chitl. The fl owering plant was fi rst introduced to the United States by Joel Poinsett, the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, and was subsequently re-named the poinsettia. The fl owers of the poinsettia are actually the yellow blooms at the middle of the bright red or white bracts that form on the plant. Perhaps due to the bright red of the bracts, the plant quickly became a popu-lar Christmas plant.

It’s important to note that poinsettias grow in a warm climate and therefore must be kept in tropical conditions to ensure the plant’s health. Fur-thermore, poinsettias bloom in response to shortening day-light hours. That means they will need ample darkness each night in order to simu-late the dark nights of short, winter days. To achieve this, you may need to put the plant into a dark closet for 12 to 14 hours each night.

During the day, the plant should be in a sunny window where it will have access to bright light. The more light the better. Keep the soil even-ly moist. Misting the plant will help it to retain some hu-midity. Also, fi ll the overfl ow saucer on your fl ower pot with gravel to allow water seeping through the pot to evaporate from the gravel. Hot tempera-tures indoors combined with high humidity will help the

The basics of poinsettia plant care

plant to thrive. Even one day without adequate moisture

can cause the leaves to drop. Furthermore, decreasing tem-

peratures can cause leaves to fall off. The goal is to keep the indoor temperature con-sistent.

While many poinsettia plants are discarded after the holiday season, these plants can actu-ally be cut back and saved for next season. Trimming back any remaining leaves and continuing to care for the plant by keeping it moist can help. To force the blooms next season, start reducing

the plant’s exposure to sunlight in mid-September to October. Again, this will mean removing the plant to an area that is shrouded in complete darkness. Even streetlights or indoor light-ing can affect blooming. If the plant does not begin to turn color before the holi-day season, you may need to purchase a new plant and try again next year.

He had a broad face and a little round belly that shook when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf. And I laughed when I saw him in spite of myself. - “A Visit From St. Nicholas”

Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without Santa Claus. Santa will forever be ingrained in the holiday season,

Keeping the magic of Santa aliveserving as an endearing symbol of the season regardless of your religious affi liation.

Parents typically go to great lengths to ensure their chil-dren enjoy the holiday season. By keeping the magic of Santa alive, parents can add a special touch to the holiday season for their youngsters. Children may become more skeptical of Santa around the time they turn 10, but there are plenty of ways to encourage this spirit to live on year after year.

* Read an uplifting story. The holidays are ripe with stories that tug at the heartstrings. Parents can take their children to the library and rent a Christmas tale or take home a book of holiday stories, reading a different one before bed each night. Encourage children to write their own positive stories of what the holidays mean to them and read them aloud to family and friends. The book “101 Ways to Keep the Spirit of Santa Alive: For “Kids” From 1 to 92” by John Hagerman is a great way to get everyone in the house enthusiastic about Santa.

* Keep the magic fl owing. Children who believe in Santa for an extra year or two often come from families that keep the magic of Santa alive. In addition to the standard traditions of leaving cookies and milk out for the jolly old man, come up with new ways to evoke the essence of Santa. Spray peppermint air freshener around the tree and other places Santa is sure to visit. Use a large boot to make a footprint in a plush rug. Find a way to trig-ger noise on the roof to give kids the impression that Mr. Claus himself has arrived. Extra measures to keep San-ta alive can help everyone enjoy the holiday that much more.

* Take advantage of opportunities to spend time with Santa. Parents and children alike have many opportuni-ties to spend time with Santa during the holiday season, including photo opportunities at the mall and personal-ized videos sent directly to youngsters’ email accounts. Elf dolls and breakfast with Santa at a nearby restaurant

are other opportunities to spread the magic. Make the most of these opportunities over the course of the holiday season.

* Spread some Christmas cheer. Santa’s job is to bring pres-ents to the world’s children. Channel the notion that giv-ing is better than receiving and spend time giving back to others as a family. Schedule a day when you can distribute gifts at a senior center or arrange to bring gifts to a foster child. Bake cookies and deliver cellophane-wrapped dishes to all of your neighbors. These activities put the emphasis on giving.

Keeping the tradition of Santa Claus alive can help adults and children alike enjoy a more festive holiday season.

WATCHES

The color green is synony-mous with the holiday sea-son. But as holiday revelers deck their halls with green this season, they also can go green when shopping for loved ones.

Many shoppers are con-cerned by their carbon foot-prints. In an effort to em-brace a more eco-friendly lifestyle, such shoppers may look for ways to continue their holiday traditions, but do so in a way that’s more considerate of the environ-ment. Though the holiday season is often associated with excess, holiday shop-pers can still fi nd eco-friendly ways to put smiles on their loved ones’ faces this year.

* Purchase energy effi cient products. The holiday sea-son is a great time of year to fi nd deals on major appli-ances, which may be on sale to make room for next year’s models. When shopping for appliances this holiday sea-

How to go green when holiday shoppingson, shoppers should look for energy effi cient products that consume less energy with-out sacrifi cing performance. Since the institution of its ENERGY STAR(R) program in 1992, the U.S. Environ-mental Protection Agency has helped consumers invest in energy-effi cient products that helped reduce air pol-lution and energy consump-tion. The program has since expanded into Canada as well. When purchasing ap-pliances this holiday season, shoppers should look for EN-ERGY STAR qualifi ed prod-ucts, which can protect the environment and also save consumers money on utility bills.

* Plan shopping trips in ad-vance. The holiday season can be hectic, and as a re-sult many holiday shoppers fi nd themselves getting their holiday shopping done as time allows. But breaking up holiday shopping into several trips can increase fuel con-sumption and lead to more

time spent in traffi c, where vehicle emissions can con-tribute to air pollution. In-stead of getting your shop-ping done on several quick trips, plan a holiday shop-ping trip in advance, setting aside enough time to get as much shopping done as pos-sible in a single trip. This can cut back on some of the stress of holiday shopping and benefi t the environment at the same time.

* Set up a holiday shopping carpool. Many people car-pool to and from work, and such a system can be em-ployed when holiday shop-ping as well. Plan a shop-ping trip to the mall with neighbors or friends to cut back on your fuel consump-tion and vehicle emissions. Sedan or coupe owners may want to limit their carpools to two people so there’s enough room in the car for gifts on the way home, while minivan or SUV own-ers should still have ample room for multiple pas-sengers and their presents. Remove unnecessary cargo from the trunk or other stor-age areas before beginning your trip.

* Create your own gifts. Worried about purchas-ing products with exces-sive packaging? Then try your hand at creating gifts instead of giving overpack-aged store-bought items. Homemade gifts may be more well-received than

another necktie or pair of slippers, and such gifts don’t have to be packaged at all.

* Buy local. When shop-ping for the holiday, look for locally-produced products, whether it’s arts and crafts produced at a nearby store or organic foods purchased

from a local farmer’s market. Locally produced products don’t need to be shipped to make it onto the shelves at local stores, making such products far more eco-friend-ly than mass-produced prod-ucts shipped from factories far away.

The holidays may not seem like an eco-friendly time of year, but shoppers can take steps to reduce their carbon footprints when shopping this holiday season. shop-ping trips, carpooling to the mall in an effort to be more eco-friendly.

Nearly as much energy goes into wrapping gifts as purchasing them. Some people excel at wrapping gifts, while others do not enjoy the task at all. Part of the trouble with gift-wrapping is the room and tools needed to wrap all of those holiday treasures. But a gift-wrap station in a corner of the home that is seldom used can make wrapping presents any time of the year easier and more enjoyable.

* Find a place to store gift wrap and the tools needed to wrap gifts. Many people fi nd the back of a closet door works perfectly.

* Install wire hanger racks so the gift wrap tubes can be stored vertically along the surface of the door.

* Install a folding shelf on a hinge, and use that shelf to do your wrapping. Fold the shelf up when it is not needed and secure it with a latch at the top.

* Hang hooks to store tape and scissors. Attach the scissors to the hook with a string so they won’t go missing.

A strong cover letter may not guarantee you land a good job, but a poor cover letter may guar-antee you won’t. On its own, an effective cover letter can catch the eye of hiring manag-ers tasked with fi nding worthy candidates among stacks of ap-plications, while a poor cover letter may ensure hiring manag-ers never even glance at an ap-plicant’s resume.

An effective cover letter should be concise, conveying an applicant’s work history and goals in a few paragraphs or less. The following are some additional ways men and women can craft effective cover letters.

* Address a specifi c person when possible. When responding to a job posting that listed a specifi c contact, address your cover let-ter to that person rather than beginning the letter with, “Dear Sir or Madam” or “To Whom It May Concern.” Personalize each cover letter you write so the hiring manager does not get the feeling that you are sending out cover letters en masse. Make sure names are spelled correctly and job titles are accurate.

* State your purpose early on. The purpose of your letter, which is to state the job you’re seeking, should be made clear early on. Hiring managers often handle the vetting process for a host of po-sitions at their companies, so the earlier the hiring manager knows which position you’re applying for the better. Hiring managers may become frustrated when ap-plicants don’t make their inten-tions clear or do so in the fi nal paragraph instead of the fi rst.

* Explain why you are a quali-fi ed candidate. While it’s good to note your work history, your resume will do the bulk of that legwork. A cover letter is your opportunity to show how your work history makes you a quali-fi ed candidate for a specifi c po-sition. Remember to be concise but relate a specifi c example that illustrates how your work history would help you thrive in the position for which you’re applying.

* Exhibit some knowledge about the company to which you’re ap-plying. An effective cover letter

Crafting an effective cover lettershould help you stand out among your fellow applicants, and ex-pressing some knowledge about the organization can do just that. The goal here is to illustrate how you and the organization are a good fi t, so you don’t need to go overboard or be too specifi c. But hiring managers are likely to be more impressed by applicants who do their homework and show a knowledge of the com-pany than applicants who submit a form cover letter where the company is scarcely mentioned.

* Be cordial in your closing. A cover letter should close with a cordial request for an interview or a friendly way of indicating you look forward to a company’s response to your application. In addition, thank the reader for his or her time and mention you would be delighted to answer any questions he or she may have.

An effective cover letter can go a long way toward making a strong fi rst impression on a

prospective employer. Men and women should look at their cover letters as their fi rst op-

portunities to connect with a company and write their letters accordingly.
