Welcome to Law Fair 2012

Careers and Employability Servicewww.nottingham.ac.uk/careers

A legal career is very popular with students and in the current economic climate it is very important that you find out as much as you can about the firms and their opportunities.

To gain a training contract or a pupillage you will need to ensure you meet their academic requirements, have done your research and are very clear on why you are applying to the firms.

You will need to consider what you can offer and how to make your application stand out over and above the competition. Whatever the core business of the firm you will have to demonstrate an interest and awareness of the practice areas and of the clients of the firms.

If you are interested in commercial firms then it stands to reason that you will need to have a knowledge and understanding of commercial issues beyond the headlines. If you want to be a business adviser then you must be prepared to have your claims tested.

The same will apply for those interested in civil liberties, personal injury etc. You need to be on top of the news and have a good understanding of the issues of the day.

The Law Fair provides a great opportunity to meet leading legal recruiters and education providers and find out what they are looking for from applicants.

The firms are exhibiting because they want to talk to you — ultimately they want to recruit you.

The exhibitors will be promoting their vacation schemes, training contracts, mini–pupillages, pupillages, law conversion courses, the LPC and BPTC.

CMS Stand for more

What’s in a name? A lot, when it’s CMS. Firstly, we’re the leading European group of law firms, with more offices in Europe than any of our direct competitors. Secondly, we take a genuine, client–focused approach that attracts some of the world’s biggest organisations. Our training contracts (in London, Bristol, Aberdeen or Edinburgh) last two years and feature four six–month seats. One of these will be spent outside your home office, at one of our

international or regional offices or on secondment to one of our top clients. Each seat will give you real responsibility on high–profile, multi–jurisdictional matters, plenty of client contact and loads of exposure to partners.

In your second year or above? Then apply for one of our two–week vacation schemes. You’ll have real work to do in two different practice areas, take part in workshops, attend eye–opening presentations and go to client meetings. And it could well lead to something great. We offer training contracts to many of our vacation schemers.

The Commercial Bar Association (COMBAR) is a Specialist Bar Association for barristers practising in commercial law, which is a broad term encompassing a wide range of civil (as opposed to criminal) legal matters. Commercial law is perhaps best summed up as the law which applies to business and financial disputes, and includes the law relating to banking, insurance, sale of goods, shipping, aviation, financial services regulation, companies, insolvency and international arbitration and employment.

Commercial cases are more likely to be well funded and prepared: the sums at stake are much more likely to justify every stone being turned. The academic threshold is high: each member set of COMBAR has its own selection criteria but, as a general rule, recruits from amongst

candidates with first or good upper second class degrees. Applicants from all backgrounds and circumstances are encouraged. Mini pupillages are available at member sets of chambers to allow you to sample life at the Commercial Bar. There are a number of myths about the Bar which have been circulating for some time. They should be treated with caution.

Staffordshire University is a leading LPC provider, focussing on ensuring graduates are highly employable. The SRA awarded the highest achievable grading of “Commendable Practice” in every area of the course after revising their grading scheme in 2006. Under the previous system the SRA awarded an ‘excellent’ grading. To make it as affordable as possible for you to study with us we have an three year interest free payment scheme.
