After only two weeks the beautiful floral tributes are reduced to just so much plastic, ribbon and metal.

I know this is going to be a sensitive subject and many out there will castigate me for these views – but ask yourself, would your dearly departed really want his or her favourite location treated in this way?

BEACHESIN WALES

A small rocky cove at high tide, sandwichedbetween towering cliffs, one mile south of the UK’ssmallest city, St David’s. The beach is accessed byfollowing a path through the craggy cliffs and downa steep set of steps. At low tide, a sandy beach isrevealed with lots of rock pools to explore. You

won't find much in the way of beach amenities atCaerfai Bay and there is no lifeguard, so care shouldbe taken if swimming here as currents are strongand changeable. If you are passing or on holiday inthe area, the magnificent Cathedral is definitely wellworth a visit.

SWAN RESCUE

Those of our readers who havebeen with us for any length oftime will know it’s not onlyswans which need our help, butit is true that by far the majorityof our rescues do involve‘water’ birds in the broadestsense. This time, its ducklings(mallard) and gulls (LesserBlack Backed); the two storiesare not related. We received a family of eight tinyday old ducklings, theircatastrophic separation frommother duck in a totallyregrettable incident involving aspeeding motorist on theoutskirts of Cardiff. We haveyears of experience in dealingwith these tiny creatures; at somestage this always involvesmoving them on for ‘finishing’prior to release, due to limitedcapacity this might be soonerrather than later. And so it waswith this group. A characteristicwhich marks some mallardfamilies is they are incredible‘athletes’, capable of jumpingconsiderable heights from astanding start; doubtless a veryuseful attribute in their survival kit!So we loaded the ducklings intowhat we considered a suitablebox and set off for Vale WildlifeRescue at Beckford. Horror ofhorrors, when we arrived andbooked the birds in, we found wehad only six ducklings. Despiteemptying the back of the car wecould find no trace of the twomissing ducklings and neithercould we hear them, we wouldhave expected their characteristichigh pitched contact calls to havebeen apparent. There wasnothing, so we set off for home.Stuck in traffic at some pointduring the return journey we didhear that call, and eventuallyfound two little ducklings in oneof my wellington boots. Clearly, they had jumped from the bottomof the box, locating one of the

carryingslots and transferredthemselves to the boot. So, forthese two, the whole processhad to be repeated, for which, itseems, they were none theworse.A local food manufacturing/processing company has learnthow careful they have to beregarding the management ofopen topped road-goingcontainers, by ensuring they arefully covered when they are not inuse. One such recently emptiedcontainer (but not washed andcleaned because its use is forunwanted leftovers) was found byfour adult gulls at some timeduring the night, and clearly wasthought to contain some tastyfood items. Whether it did ordidn’t, the actual residue was infact a curry sauce colour; let’s sayturmeric yellow!

The discovery was made atabout 5am by members of theworkforce. They had to find acertain amount of sophisticatedkit in order to remove them fromtheir predicament, whereuponwe were

called to arrangetransport, care and rehabilitation. In fact we were in a near identicalsituation three years ago, and sohad no hesitation in, once again, involving Vale Wildlife Rescue. The gulls are recovering well.By an odd coincidence, on 6thJuly, The Times carried a pictureof a Herring Gull which had metwith a similar misfortune some100 miles or so away, and wascleaned by the staff at anotherlocal wildlife hospital.

The feature on the Sirhowy toNewport Tramroad by Uplanderin the previous edition of theDirectory reminded me that Ihad long intended to writeabout this forgotten feature ofRisca. When the early tramroads werebuilt the route taken was dictatedby not only the industry to beserved, but also the attitude ofthe landowners through whoseland the route was to passthrough. The later railways werebuilt with Parliamentary sanctionand thus had compulsorypurchase power, but this was notthe case with the early tramroads. The Monmouthshire CanalCompany’s tramroad fromNewport into the Western Valleymore or less followed the canalon the Eastern side of the Valley,so when it came to building thetramroad to connect with theSirhowy tramroad at Nine MilePoint, the opportunity was takento serve those industries on theWestern side of the valleyNorthwards from Risca, ratherthan branching off at Cross Keys.

I suspect that there was a landownership issue here, but haveno documentary evidence tosupport this theory.

Thus, the tramroad came Southfrom Nine Mile Point and servedthe notorious Black Vein Collieryand its coke ovens, a largebrickworks, extensive limekilnsand a copper works on theWestern side at Risca(Danygraig). All of this section ofthe tramroad is now beneath theA467 road. To join with theWestern Valley tramroad amagnificent viaduct, the ‘LongBridge’ was constructed. Itconsisted of 32 arches, built ofstone, was 48ft above the valleyfloor, and is said to have costaround £40,000 in 1805. By 1859the tramroad had been convertedto a conventional railway, whichtook an easier and lesscurvaceous course, as thephotograph shows. For the next40 years the ‘Long Bridge’slumbered, unused, until fromabout 1900 it was slowlydemolished, and its stoneworkrecycled, being used in numerous

buildings in the area.

It is hard to understand why suchand expensive structure wasconsidered necessary. Tramroadswere better able to cope withgradients than the later railways,so a ramp down to the river, asimple bridge and another rampup would have been a muchcheaper option.

The later railway is also longgone, and its embankmentlevelled to provide extensiveplaying fields. Of the ‘LongBridge’ itself just some stoneworkremains, just to the side of RiscaBuilders Merchant’s yard.

Of the tramroads themselves, remains are few. The course of the railway is a foot and cycle track from near Cross Keys, and a bridge with the stonesleeper blocks of the tramway isto be seen at Nine Mile Point. AtPye Corner, if you stand facingthe ‘Hair Junction’ premises, tothe right a lane disappears behindthe houses in Western ValleyRoad. This was the tramroadcourse.

The ‘Long Bridge’ by Geoff Smith

The severe drought of 1937served to give warning of theincreasing need for muchgreater water storagecapacity. Proposals for alarge new dam in the upperClaerwen Valley were at anadvanced stage by early1939, but the Second WorldWar meant that the demandsof wartime production itselfput even greater strains onthe existing water supplies. The increasingly urgent callsfor a new dam and reservoiron the Claerwen were to bereactivated soon after theend of the war. It is a measure of its size thatthe Claerwen dam was tocreate a reservoir which holdsalmost as much water as the

combined total of the threeearlier dams built in theneighbouring Elan Valley. The dam is 184ft (56m) highand 1167ft (355m) long.

The Claerwen dam wasdesigned to be in keeping withthe appearance of the mucholder structures nearby.Although built in concrete, the

huge dam was facedwith dressed stone. The construction of theClaerwen dam, the last of thedams in the district, took sixyears, using a workforce of470. The Claerwen dam was

ceremonially declared open bythe newly crowned QueenElizabeth in October 1952, inone of the first officialengagements of her reign.
