DOG FOULING

Dog walkers who fail to clean

up leave behind a deeply

unpleasant and potentially

harmful problem. Toxocara

canis is a round worm found in

dog faeces which may cause

stomach upsets and serious

eye disorders.

If you are a dog owner, you

have a legal duty to clean up

every time your dog messes in

a public place. Dog owners who

do not clear up after their dogs

are issued with a fixed penalty

notice of £75 and failure to pay

could result in a court

appearance with a fine of up to

£1000.

It is astonishing that people

take the trouble to bag dog

waste and then throw it in a

hedge, a tree or on the ground.

This is a littering offence and

liable to the same penalties as

above.

Please be responsible

and always clean up

after your dog, we

will all appreciate the

effort you make and you’ll

feel that you’re doing the right

thing.

Few subjects stir the emotions as much asdog fouling!

The National Library of Wales is thecustodian of a treasure trove of Victoriannewspapers, which are available onlinefor free. It comprises a searchabledatabase and I often browse the storiesin the hope of finding some quirkynuggets to share. During my blissfulexcursions through the countless tales oflife and death in nineteenth centuryNewport, I happened upon the stories oftwo criminals, who had been broughtbefore the magistrate, James Brown (notthat one!) in 1854.The first of these was John Williams alias'Jack the Sailor', a name that surelydeserves to be remembered. According tothe Monmouthshire Beacon, Jack was aninfamous ‘ship-robber’, who operatedaround Newport. He had been convicted atMonmouth Assizes in 1850 and wassentenced to penal servitude for sevenyears. However, it would seem that Jackwas a model prisoner, which secured him anearly release. He was presented with a ticketso that he might return to British shores, anew set of clothes, and a generous £7.Unfortunately, no sooner had he arrived inNewport than he immediately jettisoned hiserstwhile obedience and resumed his oldtricks. After a fruitless attempt to steal aboat, he was apprehended and broughtbefore the court. The magistrate dischargedhim albeit with a warning that he riskedsevere punishment if his illegal behaviourcontinued. It is not known if Jack reformedhis character permanently.Beneath this report was another articleentitled, 'A Fat Thief'. You would be wrong if,like me, you envisaged a rotund desperadopilfering the possessions of others since thestory told of George Thomas, who wascharged with stealing fat from a butcher inPill. A witness informed the court that heobserved the accused enter the

slaughterhouse and pick up a large piece oftallow. He then broke this in two andsecreted both parts in his pocket. When heemerged, he was confronted and taken intocustardy. Thomas claimed he had onlystolen the fat to grease his boots, presumably for the purpose of waterproofingthem. But he was also accused of havingstolen other items from the abattoir beforeand when his accommodation wassearched, the police found beef tongue thathad been reported missing. By whom is notrecorded but I like to think it was the cow!Ultimately, the defendant was said to be anotorious thief, who was described as being"exceedingly fond of fat".Despite apprehending such crooks, the localpolice force was not always on the right sideof the law. In 1882, the Beacon reportedhow a constable called Griffith Davies hadbeen manhandled by an unruly crowd.Davies, who was off duty at the time, wasdrinking at a public house in Dock Streetwith a seafaring acquaintance. Anothercustomer became increasingly belligerentand Davies, still in his uniform, threatened toeject him if he continued. An argumentensued and soon, an inspector and sergeantappeared and instructed Davies to leave. When he declined, a mob of half a dozenmen grabbed the hapless constable andhoisted him onto their shoulders. He wascarried roughly through the town to thepolice station with his superiors seeminglycheering them on from behind. An enquiryfound that Davies was entirely blameless('Davies the Blameless' is surely a nicknameto rival that of 'Jack the Sailor') but theInspector and Sergeant were suitablychastised.Who knows what other peculiar treats residein the National Library of Wales archive butrest assured if I find anything of interest, you'll be the first to hear!

At the end of our last articlewe reported on the majorproblems in Herefordshire

where fatalities now estimated toequate to roughly 10% of thegrazing swan flock occurred, butquite quickly Western PowerDistribution (WPD) were in actionfitting the latest and mosteffective version of flight divertersto the considerable number ofcable spans which we identifiedas being the source of theproblem. This is relatively easy tofix, but sadly, the same cannot besaid for the National Grid highvoltage lines which cross theGwent Levels and, in particular, the Newport Wetlands Reserve. On 10th March we received a call, which involved a seriouslydistressed juvenile swan whichhad obviously flown into these

cables. He was lucky to bespotted by a visitor to the reservefrom Swansea who raised thealarm, and then for us to find himdeep in undergrowth about twohours later. We took him to theSwan Sanctuary the followingday; the assessment was that thebreak in his leg was at least aweek old, and was lucky to havesurvived this long in such ahandicapped condition. Now thathe's in the best hands available,he will survive with a funny walk, but he will be fine. Sometimelater, another beautiful matureadult male swan was far lessfortunate; he was killed instantlywhen he flew into cables in aremote area north of the M4 nearMagor. What with these ongoingproblems of cable strikes, there's

no doubt March has been a toughmonth with at least two fatalitiesresulting from attacks byuncontrolled dogs. These reallydo give us just cause for intenseanger, they are totally avoidable ifonly their owners behavedresponsibly. One case was inSwindon and the other nearer tohome, occurred in the Goldcliffarea on the Gwent Levels. Itinvolved a lone adult male swanwhich had been part of thescenery in these parts for anumber of years. The dog was atype of Shar Pei, on a lead, butone of those long extendabletypes which, in the circumstanceswas about as much use as achocolate fireguard, not intendedas a flippant description, but toillustrate the total inadequacy ofthe safety measures in place. We

Of Powerlines, Dogs (or TheirOwners) and Fishing line

These’s only one winner if a swan flies into one of these

As this article is being written, it is sobering to note it is,already, the last week of March, and the clocks have just beenmoved forward one hour; that's the start of British SummerTime although meteorologically speaking, with the passing ofthe solstice, spring was only just begun, and we, at SwanRescue South Wales were grounded for a total of four daysbecause of snow. Extraordinary and most peculiar.

hear it everywhere dogs are beingexercised in places where swansare resident my dog wouldn'tattack the swans. It simply isn'tas simple as that; it requires onlyfor a swan to feel threatened, andthe chances are there will be aconfrontation, the outcome ofwhich can only be bad news. It isfor this reason that we wouldwelcome a requirement that dogsin public should be on a shortlead and muzzled. It is not onlywildlife which is at risk; as hasbeen all too apparent in the newsin recent times; vulnerablepeople, especially children are notnecessarily safe in the companyof dogs, particularly the largermore powerful species. In this particular case, the ownerdid attempt to pull the dog off theswan, but not before deeppenetrating wounds had beeninflicted on both sides of thelower back, and the spine hadbeen exposed. Despite our best

efforts, Pat who brilliantly caughtthe swan on the far side of thereen, and our hospitalising himwith Sue in Swindon, the swandied three days later. In our view, there is little doubt an offence hadbeen committed under theWildlife and Countryside Act1981.As this edition of the Directory ispublished, the end of the closedseason, where applied, for coursefishing will be approaching. Forthis reason we feel it appropriateto enter a plea to all courseanglers to exercise great carewith their fishing tackle. By way ofillustration of the consequenceswhen things go wrong, we can do

no better than recount a rescue ofa juvenile swan at the WildernessPond at Porthcawl. This was oneof four cygnets still at 'basecamp' in mid January. For anumber of days it was apparenthe had become detached fromhis siblings, spent a lot of timesleeping in a remote part of thepond and was not feeding. He

appeared to have a length offishing line passing from his beak, round his neck, and thendisappearing under water. Anumber of land based attemptshad been made by Gary, our manin Port Talbot, to catch him, but allof these failed so we had nochoice but to call upon our friendSteve for help with his trustedkayak. For a while, even this looked as ifit was going to fail. Our luckchanged when the fleeing swan

swam briefly into marginalvegetation on the island, and ashe emerged it was clear somepieces of stick had becomeattached to the fishing line weknew he was trailing. This slowedhim down, and caused a measureof panic. Steve managed tomanoeuvre him close enough tothe bank for Josh, Gary's sonwho very quick wittedly gothimself onto a position where hewas able to net the swan, just ashe was turning to escape again. As is so often the case in theseextreme situations, it was all a bitbrutal and undignified, but whatchoice do we have?Undoubtedly, the means didjustify the ends. What we found was a mediumsized micro-barbed hook in histongue; the attached line hadcaused a nasty slice woundunderneath the tongue and itselfhad become entangled in acluster of vegetation, all being

wrapped around a leg. Ascarefully as we could, wemanaged to remove all this 'stuff',and delivered him the next day tothe Swan Sanctuary atShepperton to recuperate (for therecord, Admission No.0038). Forcompany on the journey, therewas another juvenile with adislocated wing, yet anothercable strike, rescued the previousday from a field of kale a mileupstream from Monmouth.

Newport - Th e fastest moving property market in the whole of the UKIt’s true – according to a property portal Rightmove, Newport has the hottest property market in the UK and buyers are queuing up to move here.

Th e increase in demand has led to a 37% annual drop in available properties for sale and a £12,000 uplift in asking prices.

We have been experiencing a signifi cant increase in the number of home buyers looking to relocate here from Bristol and Cardiff due to a combination of factors including the scrapping of the Severn Bridge tolls, the high employment rates in the city and the aff ordability of properties compared to those in our neighbouring cities.

It’s a sellers market and those choosing to sell their homes here can expect to sell them quicker than anywhere else in the UK. 12 months ago the average home took 76 days to sell and this has dropped to just 52 days a decrease of 32%!

Book Your Free Valuation TodayIf you are thinking about moving, please get in touch with us to book a free valuation by one of our experienced team who will also happily explain what you could do to your property to perhaps increase its value and secure a quick sale at the right price for you.

Will I ever slow down? Do I have the right plansin place? Retirement is a chance to do more ofwhat you enjoy, and figures released as part of arecent State of Retirement report indicate thatfar from winding down, retirees are making themost of their time, with signs that pensionfreedoms have made people even more likely tofeel this way.Half (49%) of retirees now say they view their post-work years as an exciting phase of life, with manyusing their free time to learn, see and experiencenew things.

STOPPING WORK HAS OPENED UP NEWOPPORTUNITIESNearly two thirds (64%) of people who retired sinceApril 2015 say stopping work has opened up newopportunities, with one in five (20%) having decidedto learn new skills, and more than half (55%)devoting more time to their hobbies. In addition, those who retired since the pension freedoms arebeing more adventurous with their holidays. Nearlyhalf (46%) are holidaying in places they’ve neverbeen to before, compared to 39% of people whoretired before the freedoms were introduced, withthe Caribbean (18% vs 11%), Australia (15% vs 6%)and cruises (23% vs 21%) popular destinations.

VIEWING RETIREMENT MORE POSITIVELYThe report finds this trend of viewing retirementmore positively is set to continue, with futuregenerations similarly optimistic. Two in five (42%)of those not yet retired think retirement will beexciting, and three in five (60%) believe they willhave the opportunity to do more of what theyenjoy. In terms of holidays, younger age groups arehoping to visit more far-flung locations, with 18 to24-year-olds aspiring to travel as far as Asia (26%versus 11% of 45 to 54-year-olds), Canada (26%versus 17%) and New Zealand (25% versus 17%).

WORKING FOR AN ADDITIONAL FOUR YEARSAND TWO MONTHSHowever, despite high hopes for enjoying theirretirement years, many of those under 65 believethey will be working past this point, with peopleexpecting to work for an additional four years and

two months on average. In fact, one in ten (10%)expect to continue working for more than ten yearsafter retirement, with this doubling to one in five(19%) for those between 35 and 44 years old. Thiscould be down to a lack of planning, as more thanthree in five (62%) of 35 to 44-year-olds don’t knowhow much is in their pension pot – and of those whodo, two thirds (66%) have less than £50,000.

LIVING HOW YOU WANT ONCE YOU STOPWORKINGOne of the best ways to maximise retirementincome and ensure you can live how you want onceyou stop working is to obtain professional financialadvice. However, only one in ten (11%) haveobtained advice about their retirement, and 70%have no plans to do so. Worryingly, this rises tonearly eight in ten (79%) for over-55s.

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR PENSIONS ANDINVESTMENTS We understand that professional advice on financialmatters is invaluable to creating a durable retirementplan for the future. We will help you set goals, takecontrol of your pensions and investments and adaptto changing circumstances. To have a no obligationreview of your finances give us a call on 01633 840000.

This castle can be reached fromSkenfrith by returning along theB4521 road, in the direction ofAbergavenny, and after nearly sixmiles taking a signposted left turnfor White Castle. Gwyn apGwaethfoed was the originalowner of this castle and as hisname means ‘white’ in Welsh;White Castle is a simpletranslation of Castell Gwyn. Thereis also a theory that the castletakes its name from its originalcolour, as traces of white plasterhave been found on the stonewalls.Gwyn was another brother of theBach family, who built Skenfrith. The brothers were sons of Cadivorap Gwaethfoed, a onetime prince ofCardigan, who was also an ancestorof the Morgan family who becamelords of Tredegar. This family beingthe ancestors of the notorious pirateHenry Morgan. The originalfortress was again most likelyconstructed of wood placed on topof an earlier defensive earthwork.Legend tells us that Gwyn was oldand blind, when his castle wasbesieged and seized by theNormans. He appealed to KingRufus for the chance to fight hisNorman opposer on equal terms ina darkened room. His claim to theright of trial by combat wasgranted, and the two fought it outin a locked and unlit room. Theelderly blind Welshman succeededin overcoming his Normanopponent and his property wasthen restored so the legend claimed. This old story may be true, but

Gwyn could not have retained thecastle for very long, for soon afterthis time the Normans began tostrengthen the fortress. WhiteCastle was the most vulnerable ofthe three castles and the Normans'construction turned this into themost formidable of the trilateral ofcastles. The present castle dates from theearly 13th century and is a good

example of a concentric castle. Thefortress is shaped like an elongatedhexagon, with an inner wardcompletely surrounded by a loftycurtain wall linked with six circulartowers of great strength. Two of

these towers, on the north side, were constructed to form theGatehouse, and the remainingtowers are equally spaced aroundthe outer wall. The whole castle issurrounded by a wide and deepwater-filled moat. The south side ofthe ward contained the hall andkeep.Over the moat on the north side ofthe gateway towers lies the outer

ward, a large open space againenclosed by a strong wall with fourprojecting towers. This also isprotected by an outer moat. Thesecombined defences are designed toprovide a powerful barbican. The

castle contains no identifiableremains of accommodation for thedefenders, who were likely to havebeen housed in wooden lean-toshelters.Look down into the waters of themoat and see if you can spot any ofthe giant carp that swim here, butbeware of any of the swanguardians who sometimes inhabitthe moat. Rudolph Hess, the deputyReichführer, who was allowed toexercise in the castle grounds whenimprisoned at a nearby mentalhospital, once fed these carp andswans. Climb to the top of thegateway tower, where a woodenplatform has been constructed toallow us to enjoy the impressiveviews. The most dominant landscapefeature is the Skirrid Fawrsometimes known as the ‘HolyMountain’, because on the summit,1,600 feet above sea level, are still afew stones from St. Michael'schapel. The soil from this site wasconsidered holy, and was gatheredby local folk to spread on the floorsof their cattle sheds. This wasintended to ward off disease, Iwonder if it would have kept ‘footand mouth’ at bay? The great gashin the southern flank has beenvariously blamed by the groundingof Noah's Ark or caused bylightning strike in the stormfollowing the Crucifixion, - takeyour pick!

LlanvetherineAfter leaving the castle and headingtowards Abergavenny, it is worthwhile briefly, pausing here toexamine the village church, whichcontains a few interesting, features. The church is normally kept locked, but access can be obtained from theoccupant of Brook Cottage. Justfollow the path from the churchentrance, go through the gate thencontinue on and turn left and crossover the brook bridge to thecottage. The oldest part of the church isprobably the tower which has anupper section corbelled out toproject over the lower construction.

The tower contains two bells dated1582 and 1653. An oak tablet, fixedto the west wall of the knave, illustrates the five wounds of Christ. The chancel holds two life-sizedeffigies of a 17th Century Rectorand wife. The Rector, ReverendDavid Powell, is dressed in splendidperiod costume but his facialembellishments are mostimpressive. A noble moustachesweeps back to his ears and hisbeard is composed of five plaits. TheRector's wife stands on the left andis dressed in authentic Welshcostume of the time. It is interestingto note that she wears her weddingring on the second finger of herright hand, as was customary at thatdate. The lady's feet are depicted, bythe sculptor, as would be seen fromthe side. The odd thing about these twostone memorials is that whilst theReverend Powell is recorded asdying in 1621, his wife's memorialis dated 22ndApril 1715. The dressstyle of the couple is contemporary, but the dates suggest that his wifeoutlived the Reverend Powell, bysome 94 years. It seems more likelythat some vandal has adjusted thedate of Mrs Powell's memorial. From Llanvetherine carry straighton along the B4521 to reachAbergavenny and thus completeyour visit to the trilateral of threecastles,

We seek to be Word-centred and gospel-driven.The Word of God is crucial! The ministry of Grace Baptist Assembly will, we trust, alwayskeep God’s Word central. Why? The Holy Bible is God’s written Word; it is how He has

chosen to communicate to us who He is, what He has been doing, and what He expects ofus. The Bible alone holds the ultimate, most trustworthy, most authoritative answers to the

questions of life and eternity. Thus, rather than magnifying the ideas of mere human beings, we look instead to God, trusting that He inspired and preserved His Word for Hisglory and our good. We believe that the written Word is a reflection of the Living Word,Jesus Christ, and that its contents are our reliable, sufficient rule of faith and practice.

When a moral question is raised, or when we face a difficult circumstance, we choose toresort to the Bible for guidance, correction or comfort, rather than falling back on our own

experiences and opinions.

We seek to be traditional in our message. We hold to historical Baptist distinctives. Specifically, we are fond of The First London Baptist Confession of Faith, 1646 edition. We gladly accept broken, unaccomplished,

needy sinners like ourselves; but we are not seeker-driven. We do not believe that ‘doingchurch’ is what God requires of people, and we do not believe that it is this or any other

local church’s responsibility to water down, nor add to, the gospel of Jesus Christ in orderto create a more ‘comfortable’ environment. Do we want that gospel [good news] to be

understandable? Yes. Do we ourselves want to be compassionate and inclusive? Yes. Wewant broken people - people like us - who know their sinfulness. We are here for those who

know that they need something more than what this life has to offer. We seek not to offermore of the same, but to offer something different. The person and work of Jesus Christ is

enough for us. We invite you to come see why.

We seek to be relevant in our vision. We maintain that the Bible is more than a collection of ancient writings, but rather, it

contains everything we need to face the problems of life in today’s culture. Consequently, our teaching and preaching will include practical application to help us live as we ought to

live. We are not an elite group of those who have ‘arrived’ and we are committed to continual change. We rest on and submit to the absolute, unchanging truth of the Bible;

and it in turn changes us. We hear and meditate on God’s Word - and while we do that, wetry to be doers of that Word, and not hearers only. We have found that the unchangingtruths of the Bible affect our everyday lives, and we pray that we will become more and

more like Jesus Christ as we submit to and obey His Word.

READERS OF THIS COLUMN have become aware ofthe work of the Twmbarlwm Society, such as litter-picking, fence and path repairs and our strugglesagainst off-roaders. But how many realise that CTScampaigns on many issues that have an immediateeffect on the wider landscape of the mountain? Ourmembers work continuously to lobby localauthorities and government departments to get thebest for our environment.

One such campaign concerns the actions of NaturalResources Wales (NRW) precipitated by PhytophthoraRamorum (aka Larch disease) that has affected forestrythroughout the UK and in particular, south-east Wales.

Clearing the diseased trees in the lower Sirhowy andEbbw Valleys has had a major impact on the landscape. The harvesting process has taken longer than elsewheredue to the steep, and therefore, tricky terrain, which hasmeant that every tree has to be felled by hand and thenwinched up to forest tracks. Locals have, for themost part, been understanding about thelength of time the forest paths have beenclosed, but there should be an expectationof professionalism and balance from NRW.

With felling on Machen, the GwyddonValley, Mynyddislwyn, and the CwmcarnForests around Twmbarlwm, occurring within arelatively short space of time, walking routes have beensubstantially reduced. NRW has the right to close forestrytracks without consultation. However, permission must besought to close public rights of way (PRoW). Initiallypermission can be granted by the local authority for up tosix months. If NRW needs longer it must apply for anextension. If a short extension is needed, because of themagnitude of the exercise, it is understandable that thecorrect procedure isn’t always followed. However, publicrights of way have been closed in some areas forsubstantially longer than six months.

There is more than one reason for this. NRW tends toapply to close PRoWs well before contractors are ready tomove to that particular area.

For instance, Restricted Byway 189 in the Nant CarnValley has been closed since December 2017, but at thebeginning of March 2018 not only were there no WARNINGposters advising visitors of the closure, no work hadstarted on the byway. It is highly unlikely that NRW will meetthe six month deadline for reopening the byway at the endof May. This is just one example, but it is far from anisolated incident.

TwmbarlwmForest Walksneed ClarityMain photo: Brash coveredfootpaths leave them unusablefor many months.

Right: A sign warns cyclists of “live work” in theCwmcarn Forest but does not prohibit entry - yetPRoWs remain closed to walkers far too long.

Another reason for theextended closure of PRoWsis that NRW appears not tocheck that contractorshave cleared the route ofthe brash generated bythe harvesting process. Itis impossible to find the line of a right ofway when it is covered in brash and it would be dangerousto try to negotiate a way through. Many walkers, includingRamblers members, moan about the problem but do notmake a formal complaint. So the paths can stay “closed”for a very long time. The route may be legally open butthat’s no comfort when it is impossible to use it.

Additionally, extra forestry roads need to be installed toextract the felled timber and in doing so PRoWs arecompromised. Unfortunately, there seems to be littleattempt to reinstate many of the rights of way and thusalthough they still legally exist, they are in fact unusable.

NRW recently sent out a request that walkersobey the WARNING signs and not enter aprohibited area, but when someone is on aplanned 8 mile walk and they come across aWARNING sign, there is often no choice but to

carry on. Dragging a group back up a steep inclineand extending the walk by a few more miles is just not

possible, especially when the walkers are looking forwardto the final stretch. Walking groups have to plan theirprogramme in advance. It is an impossible task wheninformation is non-existent or significantly out of date ormaybe even totally incorrect.

The public expect professionalism from a governmentbody, and we expect the same level of commitment todifferent types of users. NRW expects members of thepublic to play fair with them, but maybe NRW should leadby example.

Maggie Thomas, CTS Trustee and Correspondent for the Open

Spaces Society for Caerphilly and Torfaen County Boroughs

I know this because finallythere is a hint of sunrise when Iget up in the morning and theevenings are definitely gettinglighter, also there are at leastfour snowdrops in my garden!Only four I’m sure you’rethinking but I’m proud of them. The daffs are also making avaliant effort to stand tall andstraight despite a brisk wind. And so, the year starts to roll byyet again, only the older you getthe faster they go.It was coincidence that our first

meeting in February fell on

Shrove Tuesday, so of course it

was pancakes for supper, after a

very topical table top quiz with

questions on pancakes, St

Valentine, whose feast day just

happened to be the following day

and songs with the word love in

the title.

Unfortunately, our trip to the

Royal Mint had to be postponed

because of snow but it has been

rescheduled for May and as every

cloud has a silver lining hopefully

the May date will be warm and

sunny.

The second meeting interestingly

was entitled “Arm Knitting” and

we were asked to bring along

some super chunky wool if we

would like to have a go. Our

speaker brought a huge array of

scarves and cowls that she had

made and as she chatted about

how she had got into arm knitting

she demonstrated how to cast on

and get going, which we duly

tried. After quite a number of

false starts some of us took off

and our scarves grew at a pretty

amazing rate, others I fear sadly

will need further instruction!!

Perhaps a recap in the future if

they can remember where they

put their super chunky wool.

There can be few of us who have

not had any dealings with Velindre

Hospital as it is the primary

cancer care hospital in this area

and its director of cancer services

came to tell us about the

fundraising trek to Patagonia, she

made in 2015. This is exactly 150

years after the first Welsh settlers

set sail for Patagonia. Amazingly

the Welsh folk were welcomed by

the natives and they have lived

side by side since. Her talk was

illustrated by some very

interesting photos, showing how

harsh the terrain was and in fact

still is. Now Patagonia is still a

Welsh speaking enclave in

Argentina. The money that people

donate to Velindre is spent

enabling very sick people to

celebrate occasions that

otherwise might pass unnoticed

or indeed not happen at all, for

example weddings are

sometimes arranged or birthdays

celebrated, giving a richness to

lives that may be short.

The forthcoming programme is

full and varied including a talk

about a soldier’s tour of

Afghanistan and how to make a

glass terrarium.

There are plenty of trips in the

offing, our Mint trip, a visit to

Wells and Cheddar culminating

with tea with Cheddar W.I., a

Gwent Fed trip to Blenheim

Palace to meet the Countryfile

Team and a theatre trip to see

Little Shop of Horrors.

We meet at St Anne’s Church

Hall, High Cross, the official

meeting starts at 7.30 pm but

members arrive from 7.15

onwards to enjoy a cup of tea or

coffee and a chat.

Nash Point

Nash Point Lighthouse is aniconic 19th century, grade 2listed, historic building. It is amajor part of our social andmaritime history and was the lastmanned lighthouse in Wales, being de-manned in August 1998.The station was built between1831 -1832 using stone quarriedfrom the beach below the station, which was then winched up thecliff and dressed on site by veryskilled masons. There is also oneof only a few sets of compressed-air, ‘Siren-type’ Fog Signals in thewhole country. These are nolonger used as an Aid toNavigation, being discontinued in

the mid 1990s. They wererestored between 2002 – 2006 byTrinity House engineers in theirspare time and using anyavailable spares and though it willnot damage or harm your ears (itmay make you jump) it can beheard from up to 20 miles away. The fog horn is currently out ofuse in order for an assessmentof its mechanical condition. Nash Point Visitor Centre is openon weekends and Bank Holidaysduring most of Spring, Summerand Autumn as well as onWednesdays during local schoolholidays. Opening times are from12.30-5.30pm during British

Summer Time and from 12.00-4.30pm during G.M.T. For more information about thebeaches please call Vale ofGlamorgan Tourism on 01446704867.

Nash Point is a headland and beach in the Vale of Glamorgan, popular with visitors who come to see the superb lighthouse andwith walkers who enjoy the stunning scenery on the CoastalPath. A short circular walk (approx. four miles) from Nash Point toSt Donats can be accessed along the cliff tops. Ample parking ischargeable when refreshment hut & WC is open. Dogs arewelcome all year round.

The 'fall of the fuller' or 'fallof the woollen washer' isthe lowermost of the threecelebrated falls on theMellte, which is within theWaterfall Country in theFforest Fawr section of theBrecon Beacons NationalPark. It is well worth visiting thisbeautiful waterfall andenjoying the wonders ofnature all around. It onlytakes just over one hour todrive to the waterfall carpark from Newport andthen about a one hour walkfrom the car park to thewaterfall.
