Twmbarlwm Hillfort and Motte Castleby Mark Walters on Sketchfab

This image is taken from a digital 3D model that was createdfrom over 300 hi-resolution individual images. It can beviewed online at https://skfb.ly/6yASY where you canexplore the whole area in 360º simulation.

pre-defined points. These images look fairly innocuouswhen viewed alone, but they were later processed tocreate an accurate 3D model that gives an astounding360º tour around the ancient monument.

As well as the photo-realistic rendition of the 3D modelMark also created a digital surface model (shown above). It has been optimised to accentuate the earthworks and itmakes details in the ramparts like the gaps, quarry hollowsetc. clearer for general viewing, discussion and

interpretation. The online model has been annotatedwith points of interest and experts can explore

the model to add their own opinion about thesequence of earthworks visible.

Another flight took detail photos of themotte (the tump) and the whole of the

surrounding ditch – these remarkable shots giveyou angles of view you’ll never normally see.

Hi-definition videos of the whole area were also shot andwe also did a quick flight over the Bronze Age mound thatis just to the south east of Twmbarlwm. These revealedinteresting areas that we hope to include in future research.

The initial results from the drone survey can be seenon our website and there are also links to the 3D model

and videos. There’s not enough room in this

article to reveal what the experts havesaid so far but we will publish all ourfindings in due course.

In the autumn the experts involved inthe project will give an overview of theirfindings in an illustrated talk atCrosskeys RFC, and this will befollowed by a field walk on themountain where the physical featureswill be pointed out and explained –watch the website for details.

Note: If you have any expertise inthis field and would like to get involvedplease get in touch.

    Terry C. Evans, Chairman CTS

CTS meet at the car park below Twmbarlwm’s summit for a litter pick and volunteer workday on the last Sundayof every month to which everyone is invited, it’s not all hard work and it’s a great opportunity to find your wayaround up there. We organise walks and other events up the mountain and at Crosskeys RFC throughout theyear so watch our website and Facebook page for details. www.twmbarlwm.co.uk

    Drone Survey to RevealTwmbarlwm Secrets?

Almost every time I meet a new visitor to Twmbarlwmthey invariably ask “What is it, exactly?”. However, itseems there is no definitive answer, as every experthas their own opinion or interpretation of theevidence put before them. The Twmbarlwm Societyhas now joined the debate and have started a projectthat may reveal some of the secrets of the ‘Twmp’.

Working with and taking advice from Cadw, thehistoric environment service of the Welsh Government, our aim is to use modern archaeological methods toprepare data in more detail than has ever beendone before. All data and results collected willbe published and made freely available forexpert analysis.

To start with we commissioned aphotographic Drone Survey and, eventually theproject will involve a geo-phys survey, lidar andpalaeoenvironmental (boring core samples) surveys.

So it was that on a beautiful sunny day in April, archaeologist and drone-operator, Mark Walters, met withCTS members on Twmbarlwm. He did several drone flightsaround the mountain top. The first flight worked to aprecise grid, taking over 300 hi-res photos vertically over

Just one of the spectacular shots of the motteon Twmbarlwm with a hazy Risca below

  • After the explosion of 1860, theowners, the Risca Coal andIron Company became unviableand they were wound up on30th March 1861. However, in1862 the colliery waspurchased for £38,000 byThomas Rhodes who hadpossibly been a previousshareholder and he restartedoperations. In 1872 he sold to Watts, Wardand Company, a coal shippingbusiness based in London andNewcastle thathad started byshipping coal toLondon from theNorth East butwhich had nowbecome interestedin South Wales. The company washeaded by EdmundHannay Watts who, inorder to expand formed theLondon and South Wales CoalCompany purchasing a secondcolliery in the upper Rhonddavalley. Most of the coal beingmined from the Blackvein was, bynow, some distance from theshaft and so the companydecided to sink new shafts closerto the coal reserves. The namesof Wattstown in the Rhondda andWattsville have been given to thecommunities that grew up next tothe two collieries owned byEdmund Hannay Watts'company. The sinking of the new shaftscommenced in 1875 and the firstcoal was raised in October 1878.Underground connections weremade to previous workings fromthe Blackvein and Rock Veincollieries and probably also tosome of the old levels.

    In July1880 anexplosionoccurredin the

New Pits,as they were called at the

time, which resulted in 120deaths, but this does not appearto be related to the old Blackveinworkings and the Blackvein shaftmay well have been used whilstrepairs were made to the NewPits. When full operations werereturned, it's likely that all minersused the New Pits but, almostcertainly, the Blackvein continuedto be used for bringing coal to thesurface for some time.A date of 1921 has been given forthe closure of the BlackveinColliery but this is veryspeculative because of itsintegration with the Risca Colliery,as it became. At times, theBlackvein shafts were used forbringing up export coal, wastecoal, underground inspection orrepairs, as 'spare' shafts theywould have been made use ofand this would have changed

over time. In quiet times perhapsit was not used at all and thenbrought back into use whenthings got busy.Suffice to say that much of thecolliery including the enginehouse and the pair of headgearswith their winding wheels intactwere there until around 1980when they were demolishedduring the construction of theRisca bypass. Certainly, until thattime, the youth of Crosskeys andparts of Risca considered it to betheir adventure playground.

In the early 1960s the NewportFree Church Council decidedthat it was the responsibilityof the Methodist Church toestablish a free church on theGlasllwch Farm estate. A site onMelbourne Way was promisedNewport Corporation but thesite had not been secured andhad been partly built upon.Investigations were then madeand were finally successfulwhen a piece of land just overthe newly built motorway wassecured. The building of thenew Methodist Church wasbegun and where we still thrivetoday.Until the new building wascomplete the congregationshad a base at Glasllwch Primary

School. A Sunday School, started by members of Stow HillMethodist Church met weeklyand monthly family serviceswere held. In 1966 a YoungWives group began to meet atthe school on a Friday eveningand is still alive with fellowshipand two ladies groups, severaloriginal members of that groupare still involved. A youth clubwas also started. In 1967 Rev. RodneyHargreaves, then minister atCromwell Road andShaftesbury Methodistchurches, was given oversightof the new church and abuilding committee started itswork. The new Church wascalled Trinity because its

members came from threesources, Hill Street MethodistChurch which had closed,Rogerstone Methodist churchwhich had also closed and thenjoined forces with the newchurch with growingcongregation from GlasllwchSchool. Before long familiesfrom the neighbourhood, with avariety of differentdenominational backgroundsdecided to join this newcongregation in theirneighbourhood. In March 1969 Trinity MethodistChurch was opened by the thethen Vice President of theMethodist Church. Among theguests were the RT Hon George

Thomas MP, later the LordTonypandy who was lifelongMethodist and local preacher.A new challenging design forthe building in the 1970s was acopper roof and aluminiumspire, kindly donated by AlcanIndustries Ltd. This makes thechurch stand out in simpledignity. Today it still standsproudly over Glasllwch towelcome all who would enter itsdoors. Inside all the surfaces are innatural wood and stone, providing a fine background forthe richness and colour of thefurnishings and two beautifulstained glass windowsportraying the Treeof Life and Creationand Redemption. The windows are thework of the famousartist John Petts andwere donated byMajor and Mrs ParryBrown and Mr andMrs G Buck, formermembers of Hill StreetMethodist Church andfounder members ofTrinity Church. The church hasincorporated many ancientChristian symbols, in particularthe Chi Rho (a P through an x)used by the early Christians asshorthand for the Greek word‘Cristos’.The two generation of membersand Christians have filled thechurch with God’s love andfellowship. Some originalmembers are still with us andtheir children and grandchildrenare still part of the rich tapestryof Trinity’s life. And now what ofthe Tapestry that is Trinity – OurGolden Anniversary. The yearshave seen it filled with manymembers strong in the faith ofWorship and Fellowshipwelcoming and developingChristian unity. At the beginning of the 1970swe were blessed with 190families within the church

community. We had a thriving Boys Brigade,Girls Brigade and BrowniesPack. A very large and activeSunday School partaking insuccessful scripture exams andCircuit Arts Festivals. We aredelighted that a number ofthose children, now of course, adults will be attending ourspecial Memorial Service thisyear. What a lot of stories andachievements to share. Wehave been blessed with 10Ministers to date who have led, encouraged and supported usin our daily journeys in Christianunity. The years were filled withwonderful and happyexperiences, too many to list allof them. The summer outings tothe seaside, all the familiesdon’t remember it raining onthose days! The fun years of the

    Rogerstone CommunityCouncil Citizens Panel

Rogerstone Community Council Citizens Panel was set up to ensure the money from thesale of Bethesda Field a few years ago is spent in line with locals wishes.

Some money has already been allocated to coveradditional costs of drainage of the Welfare football pitch(not covered by the section 106 agreements) and on thenew play facilities, trim trail, BBQ stations and tenniscourts, which our community have really enjoyed overrecent years.Other on-going projects have also receivedfunding, several local groups have receiveddonations from the panel but there’s stillsome money left to spend on ideas thatneighbours think will benefitRogerstone. It is important to note that this moneyhas been ‘ring fenced’ by theCommunity Council and cannot beused for the day to day running ofcommunity facilities. So do you have an idea for the areaof Rogerstone you live, like a piece ofcommunity artwork or an idea to

keep our youths busy, maybe something for our elderlyresidents like a monthly quiz that might need some seedfunding to get it off the ground and for publicity? It’s important that all areas of Rogerstone get the chanceto share in this money, then maybe it can do some reallong term good for our community as a whole. Wouldn’t it

be great if our whole community came together towork on one big final project?

So get your thinking caps on! Sendyour ideas to Citizen Panel, IDEASc/o Clerk to the Council, Ty Du Community Hall, WelfareGrounds, Tregwilym Rd,Rogerstone, Newport NP10 9EQ,or email your ideas [email protected] using‘Citizen Panel - IDEAS’ as thesubject.

  • The last time, with the re-start of coarse fishingfollowing the end of theclose season where it applies, itwas a case of asking that greatcare be exercised with regard tohooks and line; left lying aroundthey constitute potentially lethalweapons. This time, we make noapology for returning to thematter of dogs for the third timethis year. Already we have beeninvolved with three incidents inwhich, without a shadow ofdoubt, an adult swan has died asa result of the behaviour of a dogwhich was out of control, and, more importantly, the failure of theowner of the dog to exercise thatcontrol. It should be taken as read thatdogs and swans are not naturalbed-fellows; rather the reverse. An adult male swan will always

protect his territory, his mate andhis young, taking the only actionhe can against anything oranybody he perceives as posinga threat. Our photographillustrates this most graphically. Our advice, presented in thestrongest possible way, especially at this time of year isto keep your dog under thetightest possible control, andas far away from the watersedge as possible. Theconsequences when things gowrong are amply shown in thephotographs which appear inIssues 71 and 73 of theRogerstone Directory, one ofwhich is reproduced here. Boththose swans died of their injuries, needlessly.Turning to coincidences, for thepurposes of these stories, let usdefine a coincidence as an

unlikelycoming together of a problemwith someone who can deal withit and who is, one way or another,in roughly the right place, andwithin an acceptable time slot.A report had been received froma bus passenger of a groundedadult swan at a well definedlocation in Nantyglo. It took about40 minutes to arrive on site, and,

    Of Warnings and Coincidences

We are concerned about issuing warnings too frequently; it couldbe said it introduces a 'cry wolf' element into what we are tryingdesperately to achieve. On the other hand, if there is no edge towhat we write, and things then go wrong, we could be accused ofnot doing or saying enough.

Just imagine what might have been

  • inevitably there was no sign of theswan despite an extensivesearch. Just one resident wasseen, and he had neither seen norheard anything. He was leaving togo the short distance toBrynmawr; I gave him one of ourcards, just in case. Withoutexaggeration, within minutesWayne, for that was his name, was on the phone from the carpark at the local Asda. Waiting inthe foyer for his mother, heoverheard a woman on her phoneobviously trying to make contactwith Swan Rescue! Clearly, it waseasy to break the 40 minutebarrier, and instead to be in thecar park in just 5 minutes. Thebird was uninjured, was of a goodweight and so was released laterthat morning at Channel View inCardiff Bay.A group of friends had taken timeout over the bank holidayweekend to canoe a stretch ofthe River Wye, ending atMonmouth. On a visit to this partof the river it is highly likely agood number of swans will beseen; the day in question was noexception. What did constitute anexception however was thesighting of a tiny (a few days old)cygnet, out in the river entirely onits own. Yes, in general swanfamilies, as do families of otherwater birds, stick close to oneanother. No, birds in general, andswans in particular cannot count!Result: if one member of a broodbecomes significantly detachedfrom the rest of the family, it willnot be missed, and, as a result isunlikely to be found. So Jeromyscooped him up and onceashore, sought help from SwanRescue. Rearing baby swans isnot simple, but the first thing tobe said is that the casualty mustbe kept warm, the more so in thiscase because he was cold andwater-logged. But what about thenext steps? If we had been in this

position, there is no doubt theright place for this little cygnetwould be the Swan Sanctuary atShepperton. To bring this story toa rapid end, it turned out Jeromywas scheduled to return toLondon the following day, to anaddress merely 10 minutes fromthe Swan Sanctuary; we do knowhe survived the night, and wasduly delivered to Sheppertonbefore lunch, less than 24 hoursafter his ordeal. Thank youJeromy, and very well done. The funeral of a close familymember took place in Harrogatelate Friday morning. During the'afters', the phone rang, as itdoes! The call concerned amoorhen chick, probably anumber of days old. It hadstrayed from the family group, and had been taken to aveterinary practice in Edgbaston,Birmingham. The local rescuecentre which we would haverecommended was unable tohelp due to a combination of amanpower shortage, and an

inundation of baby birds. It wasknown I was scheduled to travelsouth the next morning, could Ihelp? Problem! I would not beable to get to Edgbaston bynoon, the time at which they werescheduled to close for the day.Solution: this veterinary practicehas another branch operating 24hours a day at Halesowen, whichis a much easier propositionnavigationally, the more especiallyas there was a Gay Pridecelebration scheduled for centralBirmingham, with all theimplications for road closures.Edgbaston agreed to make surethe little bird was transferred toHalesowen. And so it was, onemoorhen chick was duly pickedup mid afternoon and delivered tothe Vale Wildlife Hospital atBeckford about an hour later, upon which we returned home. For another example of the kindof happenstance we've beendescribing, refer again to ourstory in Issue 71.

  • On 20th April GG was finallyable to fulfil the bookingoriginally arranged for 2ndMarch, but cancelled whenheavy snow intervened. Theevent was a twmpath for thePTA of Ysgol Bro Allta, whichwas celebrating 25 years as aWelsh medium school. Wedemonstrated a couple ofdances then got the audienceon their feet to join in withsome easy ceilidh dances, withcalling in Welsh and English byRhian and Ceri. After a breakfor the buffet, we continuedwith more of the same until9pm when the disco took over.Disappointingly for the DJ, by thetime we were packed up andready to leave, no-one apart fromGG members (in costume) hadbeen on the dance floor. It lookedlike a long night ahead for him! Ido hope they all enjoyed the restof their evening.Another ceilidh was requested on1st May at the Coldra Holiday InnHotel, to entertain a visiting group

from Norway who come to Waleson an annual basis. We usuallyfind our European cousins areeager to dance, and so it provedon this occasion, with MCBarbara Griffiths interspersing ataste of Welsh culture to give thedancers a breather. It didn’t seem possible thattwelve months had passed since

the last Tredegar House FolkFestival, but there we were on12th May performing two spots atthe 29th annual festival. Memberswere also involved with the minigwyl plant which featured twolocal schools and the visitingRalda dance group from EasternHolland. The unexpectedly goodweather brought out the crowds,

Saturday night hada strong Celtic feel with Welshbands Mansant and Morfa. Theywere supporting headliners andRadio 2 folk award winning, Imar, which has members fromScotland, England and the Isle ofMan, and all have a backgroundof traditional Irish music. The SamKelly Trio made up the quartet ofacts with some people travellingespecially to see them.

At the time of writing, GG’s nextouting will be at the NationalEisteddfod on the 8th August. The format of the Eisteddfod willbe very different this year as it isbeing held in Cardiff Bay and theusual fee for entry onto the sitewill not apply. Visitors will be ableto browse the many stalls and

watch dance displays and otherentertainment for free, onlypaying to enter the MillenniumCentre to watch the competitionsand concerts. It is hoped that thisformat will encourage more localand non-Welsh speaking peopleto attend.

GG meets on Thursdays from 8 -10pm at the Graig Community Hall, Bassaleg, NP10 8LG (opposite the Ruperra PH) and we would love more dancers and musicians to join us. Ring 01495

  • I am always amazed at theresilience of our committeemembers when things go pearshaped at the last minute. Thiswas the case for our secondmeeting in March. Unfortunately, as sometimeshappens our speaker was unableto come and so very last minutealong comes a gentleman with anarray of bizarre objects. He setsthem down carefully across thetables and each item has a labelwith a number attached, thisshould have sounded a fewwarning bells I feel in hindsight, but then hindsight is a wonderfulthing as you all know. Next, weare given a sheet of paper withthe numbers 1-20 on it. Thegentleman who outwardly lookedkind and genial then proceededto give out a few snippets ofinformation on each item and wehad to guess what it was usedfor. Did he give extra clues? Ofcourse not, he explained rathergleefully that the most any grouphad ever got right was nine! Wellwhat great fun! The ladies listenedcarefully and then set off toexamine these objects. Sadly, Ican’t remember some of thestranger items but I do know nowwhat a strap for removing horsesweat looks like. I am sure it willbe useful one day.At another hands-on meeting, ladies made a terrarium, eachmember brought a glasscontainer and our speakerdemonstrated how and whatcould be planted in them. Ladiesthen chose a selection of plantsto arrange in their container. It is always good to welcomelocal personalities to meetingsand one such person was authorMatt Johnson. Matt spent twenty-five years in the Met, his accountof his life as a policeman made usall acutely aware of how thesemen and women put their lives on

the line day after day. Eventuallyhis experiences became toooverwhelming and he retired andsought help. His therapistsuggested that he try and writehis thoughts down as he found itdifficult to articulate them. Thisworked and he found he enjoyedwriting, a friend then suggestedperhaps he could write a novel. This he did and with no publisherkeen to take it on Matt publishedit himself. He was surprised tofind it a success with troops, eventually a publisher did offer tolook at it and that was thebeginning of a successful writingcareer. It took nearly twelvemonths to edit his originalpublication but it was publishedand followed by two sequels.Any AGM is an important meetingin the annual round of any club orinstitution and it is no different forthe ladies of Rogerstone RosesW.I., each year it is greeted withslight trepidation as valuablecommittee members leave forvery different reasons, not W.I. Ihasten to add just the committee! We will miss these ladies andthank them wholeheartedly fortheir efforts. However, we are avery fortunate W.I. and we hadtwo ladies step up into their

shoes and we look forward to thenew ideas they will bring tomeetings. Our business side ofthings dealt with and we wereentertained by a ukulele bandwhilst we enjoyed a buffet.May was rounded off by a talkfrom Lieutenant Colonel SimonLawrence RAMC, he spoke abouthis tours of Afghanistan and Iraqas a volunteer radiographer. Hiseveryday job is seniorradiographer at Velindre Hospital.Simon explained how fieldhospitals are set up, that they allfollow the same pattern, basicallyin one end and out the other asquickly as possible. Patients arenot there longer than is necessarybut moved to facilities that willbest serve their needs. He gavean informative, illustrated talkwhich gave insight into theworkings of well known nameslike Camp Bastion. He also talkedabout how some of the innovativetechniques that had beendeveloped in these hospitals havebeen adopted by the NHS. We meet at St Anne’s ChurchHall, High Cross, the officialmeeting starts at 7.30pm butmembers arrive from 7.15pmonwards to enjoy a cup of tea orcoffee and a chat.

Whilst quietly sittingdown and munching asandwich, my attentionwas drawn to an unusual littlegroup of gravestones. There was afull size memorial stone, fronted byfour small stones and the whole

The area of Llansantffraed is to be found between Raglan andAbergavenny, travelling from Raglan to Abergavenny you will find asign-posted lane to the right of the A40 road which leads to the attractiveLlansantffraed Court Hotel. A number of years ago, when I was workingas a surveyor, I made a site visit to view the work in progress on therestoration of Llansantffraed Court Hotel. After a busy morning takingmeasurements to record progress, I took a lunch break and strolled downthe lane to find a quiet spot to eat my sandwiches. I spotted the neat littlechurch, dedicated to Saint Bridget, it was locked but I decided that thegraveyard would be a nice peaceful spot to sit down and enjoy my lunch.

Captain William Henry Nares beenvirtually exterminated? Had therebeen some dreadful accident orperhaps some virulent disease hadtaken toll of this poor family?Thinking about the possibleimplications of these deaths; Ideveloped a picture in my mind ofpoor Captain Nares returninghome from one of his voyages, tofind his family all suddenlyremoved from this life.Later I managed to gain entry to thelittle church which is a Grade IIlisted building and a parish churchof Norman origins. The parish ofLlansantffraed is in factMonmouthshire’s smallest parish. There is much of interest to be seeninside the little church and also amarble slab again recording theunfortunate demise of the Naresfamily. At this date my time was fullyoccupied with work and also I didnot at that time have access to theinternet, but I resolved that Iwould, one day in the future, research the history of the Nares

family. I was determined todiscover what caused the deaths ofso many of the Nares and also tofind out what became of CaptainWilliam Henry Nares.I did not manage to becomeinvolved in researching the Naresfamily until I had retired fromwork. I then became very interestedin local history and also then hadacquired the help of internetresearch to assist my investigations.

It is amazing what I have managedto discover about Llansantffraedand the Nares family with theinternet aid of Wikipedia and theGreenwich National MaritimeMuseum websites and otherinformative sources. My researches have led me fromthe Llansantffraed countrygraveyard up to Aberdeen inScotland; then through a survivingson of Captain William HenryNares to worldwide exploration. This includes Australia, a polarexpedition in search of Franklin, the Crimean War, opening of theSuez Canal, the ChallengerExpedition, the British ArcticExpedition and all worldwideexplorations including again thePolar region.I will cover and describe moredetails of these involvements andexplorations in further articlesabout the Nares family ofLlansantffraed.
