Industry Disruption

• Today – the entire industry is being disrupted • Mobile - Smartphones, Tablets

• Embedded markets - TV, Cameras, Consumer electronics, Cars

• Networking - Routers, Switches, Cloud

• Servers - Micro, Hyperscale, HPC

• IOT - Huge future impact on cloud, data, analysis

• One size no longer fits all

• One vendor alone cannot compete

• ARM’s business model and partners are key

Page 14: LCE13: Keynote: George Grey LCE13

Meeting the Challenge

• Two key agents of change:

SoCs Open Source Software

Page 15: LCE13: Keynote: George Grey LCE13

ARM SoCs

• Building Blocks • R/M Microcontrollers

• Cortex-A Series

• 32 bit ARMv7 A5 to A15, including big.LITTLE

• 64 bit ARMv8 A53, A57

• Mali GPU – Graphics or GPGPU

• Trustzone security

• All cores implement the ARM architecture • ARM vendors then focus on value add

• Low cost multicore devices

– e.g. 4 core A7 and baseband for low cost smartphones/tablets

• High end 32 and 64 bit functionality

– e.g. server focused SoCs with accelerators,

interconnect I/O and fabrics

Page 16: LCE13: Keynote: George Grey LCE13

Example - Networking & Servers

Page 17: LCE13: Keynote: George Grey LCE13

Open Source

• One company alone cannot develop and support

software for this rate of innovation

• Open source software is the only viable solution • Linux is evolving rapidly as change accelerates

• Depends on an increasing number of contributors

• 2,829 developers from 407 companies contributed to Linux 3.4-3.8*

• Working upstream - forking and maintaining is very expensive

• Working inside the open source community saves time & money

• Open source is a huge shared-cost ecosystem

Page 18: LCE13: Keynote: George Grey LCE13

Example - Android

• Open source platform for mobile devices based

on Linux

• Current version is Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

Page 19: LCE13: Keynote: George Grey LCE13

Android in Linaro

Android is important for Linaro

• Engineering activities • Power Management – multicore,

• Tools optimizations – gcc, cortex-strings

• New ARM technology test & validation – big.LITTLE, ARMv8

• Upstreaming Android functionality to mainline

• Gives us a platform for testing • Stresses the components that we’re engineering

• Gives us a platform for benchmarking • Looking for areas to improve performance of the overall system

• Google leverages Linaro’s kernel work

Page 20: LCE13: Keynote: George Grey LCE13

Industry Collaboration

• Linaro • Competitors collaborating on engineering of core software

• Sharing the cost of common software foundations

• The industry is changing from single proprietary

suppliers for core technologies, to open source driven

partnerships built on collaboration

Page 21: LCE13: Keynote: George Grey LCE13

Innovation

• Working together from requirements to solutions

• Sharing and lowering costs

• Building standard platforms that enable value-add • Examples: kernel optimization, SoC hardware acceleration, fabrics

Beyond arm-soc

• ARM dominates mobile

• Intel dominates server chips

• Each is moving into the other’s market

• Mobile Linux kernel technology is being used in the server

space and vice-versa, especially in power management

• We can no longer work in just the ARM community • Greg Kroah-Hartman – Linaro Connect, Hong Kong February 2013

• ARM/PMWG maintains CPUFreq with Intel, and Linaro has contributed

over 40% of the kernel patches in this subsystem since Linux 3.7

• LKML discussions on the scheduler changes for GTS*

• Linaro is adding Intel into LAVA for CI loop test and validation

• Industry collaboration is becoming critical for success,

and Linaro has a key part to play

*Global Task Scheduling a.k.a. big.LITTLE MP

Linaro – Making the Difference

• Our core work

• Linux kernel, Power Management, Graphics & Multimedia,

Tools, Engineering Builds & Validation (LAVA)

• Key glue between SoC vendor innovation and Linux

• Not just the kernel

• Tools, Virtualization, Languages, Stacks, Middleware

• Open Source Security is an area of increasing interest to members

• Groups

• LEG (Servers), LNG (Networking Equipment)

• Working in specific areas where a group of companies wants to share

software development costs e.g. STB/TV, Embedded, Automotive

• Our focus is on optimizing and building the core platform and

tools to support innovation and differentiation

Page 24: LCE13: Keynote: George Grey LCE13

Summary

• SoC innovation, power efficiency and choice of silicon

suppliers will drive further ARM growth across the industry

• Innovation and differentiation drives the need for common

platform software to prevent costly fragmentation

• Open Source is evolving rapidly to enable disruptive

solutions to the explosion in user data and analysis

• Users, Frameworks, Distributions, OEMs, Silicon vendors

are collaborating more closely than ever before, enabled by

Open Source

• Linaro is a key enabler in the ARM ecosystem
