Keeping up with the Downton crowd

2012-2013, which gives examples ofEdwardian pieces, ideal for Downtondevotees who want to precisely evokethe style.

“Increasingly on the AntiquesRoadshow, we find people bringing

along their items and, no matter howhigh their value, they still want tokeep them.

“They treasure them emotionallyfor their craftsmanship and links totheir family history.”

It’s beyond most of our budgets toreplicate those grand rooms in thegreat Downton Abbey. But,reassuringly, Miller says it’sperfectly possible to capture thecharm of the Edwardian era it

portrays, by featuring just a fewvintage pieces.

“This was such a diverse era forstyle because it reflected all sortsof influences, from Victorianand Art Nouveau, to Artsand Crafts or more delicateSheraton-style pieces, withpainted or marquetryeffects. There really issomething to appeal toeveryone,” she says.

“There’s no need toslavishly follow a periodlook or specific era. In fact, mixing old pieces with new ismore fashionable.

“I live in an Edwardianhouse and have PhilippeStarck furniture mixingwith antiques. Vintagepieces are wise buys as

PERIOD drama DowntonAbbey may have won overthe nation with itsintriguing plots aroundthe aristocratic Crawley

family and their servants, but itssettings are also winning hearts.

The lavish interiors of the ITV1series (back on our screens from lastSunday) have prompted a revival inall things elaborate and vintage.

“The rooms in Downton are sofascinating to look at,” says JudithMiller, one of the experts on BBC’sAntiques Roadshow.

“They’re worthy of a show inthemselves because they’re filledwith treasures and authentic perioddetails.

“Antiques and vintage pieces, which are already enjoying renewedpopularity at the moment, have beengiven a further boost by the series.”

Our enthusiasm for vintage is, shebelieves, partly fuelled by ahankering for nostalgia and a desireto replicate the perceived order, obedience and security of past eras.

“The modern world is quite scaryand people now want their homes tobe nurturing spaces, where they feelcocooned, safe and comfortinglysurrounded by the things they love,”she says.

While the drama’s themes ofpassion, tragedy and plottingfascinate fans, she believes that“stories” associated with periodpieces of furniture are similarlyappealing.

“There’s an appreciation forfurniture and possessions that havebeen handed down over the yearsand have a history

“There’s a romance in that,” saysMiller, also author of Miller’sAntiques Handbook & Price Guide

THE FIRST CHOICE FOR NEW HOMES

In association with

Keeping up with the Downton crowd

new designer furniture depreciatesby around a fifth the moment you getit home, in much the same way as a

new car does.”“Antiques will generally atleast hold their value, if not

appreciate. They’re alsomade to last and manypieces, unless they’re rare, are often very affordableat auctions, fairs or evencar boot sales.”

So, let the series comealive at home with period-

style furniture andaccessories to make even the

Dowager Countess of Grantham, played by Dame MaggieSmith, proud.

UPSTAIRS STYLELord and Lady

Grantham, played by HughBonneville and Elizabeth McGovern, hold court in gracious drawingrooms at Downton, which still retaintheir elegance in this series, eventhough the home’s now involved inthe war effort.

“Opulence, using heavy fabrics, expert craftsmanship, intricatedetailing and imported exoticpieces are characteristic ofthese homes,” saysMarianne Richards, headof styling at HomeSense.

“Choose curtains andcushions in rich petrolblues, crimsons, burntorange and bronze, preferably heavilyembroidered orwith a tapestryeffect or damask, andperhaps some tassel

fringing. Certain details are typicalof that period, such as claw feet onfurniture, marquetry, parquetflooring and black and white tiledfloors.”

DOWNSTAIRS STYLEBelow stairs, where brooding

disciplinarian butler Carson(Jim Carter) and

housekeeper MrsHughes (Phyllis

Logan) rule, there’snone of the fineryassociated with therooms above.

But with akitchen where all

the servants gather,

it’s still full ofatmosphere.

“Practical Arts &Crafts furniture, whichstarted to be massproduced in this era sothat style and quality wasno longer limited to theupper and middle classes,is very collectible,” saysMiller.

“A large rustic tablewith a collection ofperiod chairs is inkeeping with the eclecticlook of today, wherepersonality in interiorshas completely banishedsterile minimalism.”
