Turn over a new leaf and discover florals

FLORALS might be aperennial favourite forbringing colour andfreshness to interiors, butdon’t assume you’ve seen

it all before when it comes to thisblooming style.

There are always tempting newinterpretations being explored bydesigners and this year is noexception. But remember ourfondness for florals endures preciselybecause they never fail to give roomsa zingy lift, with their decorativeevocation of nature.

Even treating a home to a simplescattering of flowery printedaccessories – a cushion here and athrow there – will lift the spirits, especially at a time when we’re allcraving signs that spring has trulyarrived.

“Floral designs have always beenan integral part of the Britishinterior, from the rich tapestries ofthe medieval nobility to today’spared-down patterns by designerssuch as Orla Kiely,” says LawrenceRoullier White, founder of theinteriors company of the same name.

“It’s the stylised manner in whichthey are depicted that changes withthe mood of the time. You only haveto look at the austerity of floraldesigns in the 1940s and thesubsequent over-blown blooms of the50s to chart this change.”

He predicts that flower designsfrom previous decades are burstingonto the scene again: “Art Nouveaufloral imagery from the 1900s becamepopular again in the 1970s, claddingmany a Biba-babe, and even that‘no-no’ of generic designs – chintz –had new life breathed into it by CathKidston,” he points out.

“Now we’re feeling more confidentand optimistic, powerful Rococodesigns with large, rich blooms aremaking a resurgence.”

Clare Price, founder of interiorsspecialist, The Contemporary Home, shares her view that florals neverfade but acknowledges that for some, they’re still an acquired taste, partlybecause they’re wrongly associatedwith dated, fussy interiors.

“You either love florals or hatethem, but be prepared to besurrounded by them this year!” shepredicts.

“They endure because of theirversatility, and their ability toconjure memories of childhood and arose-tinted recollection of perfectcountry gardens.

“I think tiny, ditzy prints areproving more popular becausethey’re easier to mix with existingitems in the home.”

So think beyond the vase – there’s

enough flowery, decorativehomeware for a dazzling bouquet –without having to raid the garden.

MODERN FLORALSThis look works equally well for fans

of romantic, feminine rooms as itdoes for those wishing to use colourand pattern to soften cool, contemporary settings.

“Today’s take on florals is allabout creating a floral paradise

which is both chic and modern,”advises Anita Kaushal, stylist andinteriors author.

“So, instead of opting forpredictable pastel shades, considerbolder fuschias, bright greens and

blues. Use a dramatic replication ofone striking bloom in a fabric or awall print, or feel free to contrastflorals with otherpatterns such asbold stripes.”

It’s vital, shesays, to allow thepatterns tobreathe bycontrastingthem withpale orneutralbackgrounds, and to ensurea scheme hascohesion bypicking out afew key shadesin plainaccessories, or

Make a statement with JohnLewis’s compact Prism sofa, £1,200,upholstered in a floral scatteredKiana fabric.

TRADITIONAL FLORALClassic florals, whether conjuring acountry retreat or thosecomplementing period style, havelong reigned supreme, but even

they’ve been givena facelift to

suit 21stcenturyhomes.

“Thetraditionalmid-sized

floral chintzis shaking off

its image and hasbeen replaced with new flowerprints, which at the moment areeither small and intricate or largestatements,” says designer JoannaWood.

“Big, statement florals work wellin sophisticated areas such as livingrooms, dining rooms and masterbedrooms. Choose where you want tocreate a statement within the roomcarefully, and select the fabric

sparingly on one highlight area – alarge three seater sofa, a feature wallor a pair of curtains.

“Prints are highlyeffective in strongcolours, with orange, bold spring greens andpistachio featuringthis year.”

She advisesflower-sprigged,smaller scale printsfor smaller, cosyareas and children’srooms.

“Colours can betraditional –greens, pinks andsky blues – but modernise the lookby mixing the same print in severalcolourways within a scheme.”

ELEGANT BOUQUET: Get the

look with floral wallpapers.Companies such as Graham & Brownhave an excellent selection and oneof its prettiest is Duchessa, in pinkand lime, from its Elixir collection.

Flower power

FUNKY FLORALSBRIGHT, zingy colours andabstract designs are a worldaway from the tranquilpastoral scenes of yesterday, but they’re serving to makefunky florals asought-afterstyle fit foron-trenddecoristas.

“A floraldesign isperfect foradding aninjection ofcolour andfun to another-wisefashion-ably neutral interior,” saysLawrence Roullier White.“Ideally, keep the schemequite clean and plump forone statement piece, like anarmchair or table, burstingwith colour.

“As a general rule, if youwant subtle, select a patternwith a small repeat, but ifyou want drama, the biggerthe better. It doesn’t evenmatter if the repeat is too bigfor the application. A cushionwith the design

‘bleeding’ off the edge looksfantastic.”
