As a Lions leader, you have accepted an awesome responsibility. You aim to take action that will move your club, district, multiple district and our association forward. You strive to make a positive impact; you want to be successful. Consider this: the more time you dedicate to developing leaders the more successful you’ll become. The most successful leaders develop more leaders. While each leadership position in our association comes with specific goals, objectives, responsibilities and tasks, that’s only part of the equation. If you want to accomplish great things, you must develop great leaders. This is especially critical as we approach the end of another Lions year. Are you ready for 2015-2016 and beyond? Does your leadership strategy include a focus on developing tomorrow’s Lions leaders? Here are some basic actions you can take to develop more leaders: EXPOSE – provide access by others to your responsibilities, strategies and actions. SHARE - how you think. Explain the reasons behind your decisions and direction. LISTEN - learn how others think. Identify special skills and interests on others through frequent dialogue. CHALLENGE – provide others opportunities to stretch their minds and practice leadership skills. LEARN – from others. Solicit input and consider their suggestions. BELIEVE – in others. Belief leads to passion. Give others the courage to believe in themselves and be passionate about Lions leadership! As we, the world’s most impactful humanitarian service organization, celebrate our Centennial, we are grateful to those Lions whose leadership brought us to where we are today. We can look confidently to our next one hundred years, knowing that our current leaders recognized the im- portance of effective leadership, and took focused action to develop great Lions leaders for the future. 2014-2015 Issue 2 LEADER N E T W O R K The Most Successful Leaders Develop More Leadership

The Most Successful Leaders Develop More Leadership

Surf’s Up! Catch a Wave to HonoluluThe 2014-2015 District Governors-Elect Training Program

With the first three phases of the 2014-2015 First Vice District Governors/District Governors-ElectTraining Program nearing completion, district governors-elect around the world are looking toward the final phase of theirpreparation – the 2015 District Governors-Elect Seminar in beautiful Honolulu, Hawaii, USA!

With the support and guidance of their 2015 DGE Seminar group leaders, first vice district governors began their prepara-tion in early October with the independent guided learning component of the program. They worked diligently to completethe three assignments and online assessments and collectively achieved an impressive99.68% completion!

In January and February, first vice district governors/district governors-elect had the op-portunity to collaborate with their GLT and GMT Area Leaders and their peers abouttheir district goals and action plans related to membership growth and leadership devel-opment. Participants in this training also learned more about the association’s centennialinitiatives.

Throughout the year, first vice district governors/district governors-elect have also beenattending local training sessions, conducted by their multiple districts, to further preparethem for this important position. Multiple district topics included key leadership skillsand practical knowledge to ensure well-rounded preparation of our incoming governors.

As we look ahead to the 2015 DGE Seminar in Honolulu, incoming district governorscan expect three exciting days of interactive workshops, informational sessions andglobal fellowship designed to motivate, inspire and cultivate new ideas and multi-culturalperspectives. It will be a once in a lifetime experience, not to be missed. We look forwardto seeing you in sunny Honolulu! Aloha!

GLT Area Training

In January and February, the GLT Area Leaders coordinated the GLT Area Trainingof first vice-district governors/district governors-elect. The faculty for this trainingconsists of the GLT Area Leader, GMT Area Leader and one other experienced Liontrainer.

The GLT Area Training is step 3 of a 4 step training process for incoming DistrictGovernors. The training is an intense 3 session program that covers: Working as a

Member of the GMT and GLT, Leadership Development Workshop and Membership Development Workshop. Newthis year is a 4th session titled “Where There’s a Need There’s a Lion: Our Centennial Celebration”. This new sessionfocuses on supporting the district centennial coordinator, motivating clubs to participate in the Centennial ServiceChallenge and promoting awareness of the Centennial celebration.

Once the GLT Area Training is completed the incoming District Governors have a solid understanding of their mem-bership and leadership goals and action plans. The incoming District Governors also have the opportunity to meetwith other incoming District Governors in their area to exchange ideas and concerns regarding membership and lead-ership that are unique to their area. The GLT and GMT Area Leaders receive copies of the incoming District Gover-nors goals and action plans so, if the need arises, they are able to further mentor the incoming District Governorsthroughout their term as District Governor. This training has been very successful and will help guide the incomingDistrict Governors in achieving their membership and leadership goals.

Bright Idea

Holding a Regional Lions Leadership Institute (RLLI)in a large multiple district can be a challenge in regardto travel time and expenses for participants. One wayto reduce the travel time and expenses to attend theRLLI could be to hold the institute in two separate lo-cations within the multiple district. Multiple District 4and Multiple District J have been using this techniquefor their RLLI with a great deal of success. For exam-ple, the institute coordinator holds an RLLI in thesouthern part of the multiple district and a couple ofmonths later another RLLI is held in the northern partof the multiple district. This allows the greatest numberof qualified Lion participants the ability to attend aRLLI without incurring an excessive amount of travelexpense as well as reducing the amount of time spenttravelling.

Keep in mind that only one RLLI funding grant is al-lowed per multiple or single district per year. If youchoose to hold a RLLI in two separate locations thenyou will need to split the funding amount granted be-tween both locations.

This Bright Idea gives the greatest number of Lions theopportunity to attend a Regional Lions Leadership In-stitute.

We want to hear from you!Our objective with The LEADER NETWORK is to provide you, our GLOBAL Leadership Team, withinformation and ideas you can use in your trainingand leadership development efforts. If you have aBright Idea, suggestions for future issues or a specifictopic you would like to see addressed in the nextissue (May 2015) please let us know. Your commentswill be welcomed at [email protected].

The function of leadership is to producemore leaders, not more followers.

Training Tool - Social Media

Many people think of social media as a fun way to connectonline with family, friends, and acquaintances, but did youknow that social media can also be used to enhance thelearning process before, during, and after your trainingevent?

Social media refers to the online platforms that allow peo-ple to create, share or exchange information, ideas, andmedia (like websites, pictures and video) in virtualcommunities and networks. Popular social media sitesinclude Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn,and Pinterest, but there are many more available. Theseapplications offer an opportunity to engage learners in aninformal setting outside of the classroom so they maycontinue to learn from each other. Below are somesuggestions on how to incorporate social media into atraining program:

Before Establish a social media page or group for•

the learners attending your event. Engage learnersin an online icebreaker activity by asking them tointroduce themselves by sharing a photo or byposting answers to a few fun questions. You canalso use this platform to provide learners withlogistical updates, information, and remindersabout your event.

During Post thought-provoking questions about•

the content you are covering during your event, andencourage learners to comment and engage indiscussions. You can also post pictures and videosfrom the training to your social media page toshare them with learners, who can then share thatmedia with their own network of family andfriends.

After Keep the social media page or group active•

following the training so that learners can continueto share ideas, ask questions, and exchangeinformation. As the trainer, you can post links toresources and additional information as well topromote continued development. Finally, considereliciting feedback about the training itself as ameans of informal evaluation.

The next time you’re planning your training event, considerincluding social media as a tool in your strategy to engage, motivate and inspire your learners.
