Empowering Our Community to Step Up — Alumni Newsletter SUMMER 2012

LEADERTHE

Back to SchoolThe Memphis Talent Dividend gave birth to a physical

space for adults to pursue the goal of returning to college

to complete a degree with the Graduate Memphis

College Resource Center on July 2. Housed in the Benjamin Hooks

Public Library at 3030 Poplar, the ground floor suite will be staffed

by advisors who can meet one on one with prospective returning

students. Graduate Memphis is made possible by a $1.74 million

grant from the Plough Foundation. An estimated 200,000 adults in

the Memphis area, age 25 and older, have started but never

completed a college degree. “Without guidance counselors,

information on scholarships, assistance with forms and deadlines,

this population — seemingly the low hanging fruit for raising the

attainment rate — is not likely to return and finish college,” said

Fred Turverey, Director of the Memphis Talent Dividend.

The stated goal of the Memphis Talent Dividend, an initiative

led by Leadership Memphis, is to move the college attainment rate

of the metro area up by one percent which will result in a $1

billion economic impact. “We believe the impact of increased

college attainment is good for every sector of our city. It means that

our citizens can have access to better jobs and careers. It also

means a stronger workforce that can help attract more business

and industry to our community, as well as grow our existing

businesses,” said Scott McCormick, Plough Foundation

Executive Director.

A press conference held at the library to announce thePlough Foundation’s support and plans to move forwardwith the College Resource Center.

Graduate Memphis advisors supplied by area collegesand universities were trained on how the program works.

• Tell your friends, co-workers, and friends about theGraduate Memphis College Resource Center. They orsomeone they know could benefit from scheduling anappointment and the most effective promotion isword of mouth.

• Take a Graduate Memphis poster to your office, church, barbershop, dry cleaners, club meeting, or anywhere else

that you can think to post it. Call 278-0016 toget a poster(s) or pick one up at the main library.

• “Like” the Memphis Talent Divided Facebook page.• Attend the next Memphis Talent Dividend quarterly

meeting on August 23 at 8:30 a.m. at the main libraryfeaturing a keynote presentation from Karla Davis, Tenn.Commissioner of Labor & Workforce Development.

Do you get ourWeekly E-newsletters?Each week we send out alumni news, notices of community events and otherbrief tidbits via email. If you do notreceive this, you can sign up on the frontpage of our web site (upper rightcorner). And you can help alumni stayinformed by sending in your news ofpromotions, job changes, awards, community and nonprofit volunteerroles, and more. Send updates [email protected]

Another Update NeedOur office staff would like to hear fromyou about address changes (home oroffice), email address changes, jobchanges, or any or change in yourcontact information. The best and fastestway to update your record is to do ityourself online by logging into theonline alumni directory. It’s simple:• Go to www.leadershipmemphis.org• Click on the gray type that says “login”

at the top center of the page.• The drop down box above the login

and password spaces should say“Alumni.” If not, pull down to thatdesignation.

• Your login username is your emailaddress that we have on file.

• Your temporary password (unless youhave previously logged in and reset it)is the word “Portal” and it is casesensitive (capital “P,” lower case “ortal”).

• Once you have logged in, reset yourpassword to something which you willremember. If you forget your newpassword, click on “Forgot password.”We do not know your password; youmust reset it.

Why do this yourself? It is faster thanphone or email. Once you get used tothe “dashboard” you can find thingsmore easily. With a printed directory, you could only search for alumni by lastname or class year. With the onlinedirectory you can search by additionalcriteria such as employer or interest area. This opens up whole new realms ofcollaboration opportunities. Moreinnovation is ahead. We hope that youwill give it a try.

Second Act Service by Doug McGowenCapt. Doug McGowen (EP 2011) retired from the U.S. Navy asCommanding Officer of NSA Mid-South in Millington. In thisrole McGowan was the head of what amounted to a municipalityof 8,000 people—service personnel, families, civilianemployees—and responsible for everything for public safety toutilities on the base.

McGowen’s retirement was very short lived as he was quicklytapped by Mayor AC Wharton (EP 1979) to lead the Mayor’sInnovation Delivery Team, a Bloomberg Philanthropies-funded

program. TheBloomberg InnovationDelivery Fellowship isbeing rolled out inMemphis — andChicago, Atlanta, NewOrleans, andLouisville — as anexperiment inmunicipal problem-solving. In each of thecities, particular issueswere chosen toaddress. In Memphisthe issues are youthgun violence andsmall businessdevelopment in coreneighborhoods.McGowen does notclaim to be an expertin either area,

however, his track record does show the ability to build a team, create a shared vision, formulate a plan and get results.McGowen’s team includes Leadership Memphis alumni DorianSpears (GR 2008) and Kerri Campbell (FF 2010).

McGowen’s job is to learn all that he can about who is doingwhat on these issues in the community and come up with a planwhich can be implemented. The feasibility of a plan which canbe implemented means balancing vision and pragmatism. And it’sall on a deadline. The Bloomberg funding is a three-year grant.

McGowen graduated from the Leadership MemphisExecutive Program in May of 2011 and had this to say about hisexperience: “Through Leadership Memphis, I was able to put thecity’s assets and challenges into a framework that has beeninvaluable to me in finding out where to engage and who toengage with to make meaningful change in our city.”

Leading to ConserveWith a passion for the preservation of public greenspace, Tina P. Sullivan draws on her background ingovernment and non-profit management to serve inher new role as the Executive Director of OvertonPark Conservancy. Sullivan, a Leadership MemphisFastTrack Fall 2010 graduate, returned to Memphisin 2009 from San Diego where she had beenworking with parks. She worked with the ShelbyFarms Conservancy and later volunteered with theemerging Overton Park Conservancy.

Sullivan is made to order for her new job. Notonly does she have experience in grants, fundraising, and communications, she also is

actively engaged in the movement toward morewalkable and bikeable neighborhoods. And sheloves this city, enjoying the art, music, food, andunique sense of community the city of Memphisoffers.

FastTrack drove home the understanding thathaving diverse ideas helps to create strongersolutions and get more community buy in. “Whilemy degree in communications has helped me tolisten and respond to the needs of others, myexperience with Leadership Memphis revealed thevast diversity of those needs. I was also filled with asense of hope, because the talent, the intellect andthe drive demonstrated by my classmates convincedme that we could take great steps forward if weworked together,” said Sullivan.

2012-13 Action Initiatives

IMAGINE MEMPHIS – In the course of about three and half hours, an equalnumber of adults and high school students can create a shared vision for thefuture of our community through a process called Appreciative Inquiry andlearn something about themselves and each other in the process. Beginning inthe late summer, a series of sessions will be sponsored by the Junior League ofMemphis in partnership with Leadership Memphis. The Jefferson Awards isalso serving as a strategic partner for the program. We need alumni to committo coming to one session; approximately eight to ten sessions will be offeredover the next year and the dates will be published on the website and in the e-newsletter.

LEADERSHIP MEMPHIS SUCCESS – From the simple act of changing groupdesignations within the Executive Program class from colors to the names ofneighborhoods, Leadership Memphis has been able to tie class participantsmore closely to various areas of our city, build new relationships andunderstanding. To take the concept a step further, this year we will beestablishing partnerships with eight high schools in eight communities, working with both community stakeholders and students. There will benumerous and varied volunteer engagement opportunities. The primaryemphasis is to use the collective impact model to build a resource platform ineach high school with a goal increasing the college (post-secondary)continuation rate.

You probably know that there is aLeadership Memphis holiday partycoming up December 4 and agraduation (Celebration Receptionand Awards) next April 30. Youmay also be aware that we bring ininteresting speakers for theMulticultural Breakfast everyOctober (Oct. 31, 2012) and forthe Community LeadershipLuncheon in March (March 14,2013). These events draw hundredsof people, mainly alumni, and areenjoyable ways to stay informedand connected. If you miss one ortwo of the four, you may worryabout losing connection with yourclassmates and other alumni, butthere are actually many moreopportunities to connect each yearbeyond our four signature events. Not only can you connect withother alumni but also with thelarger community with some of ourAction Initiatives.

Interact with Current ClassYou may remember VIP Tours or Alumni Learning Journeys.

Getting a private tour and a talk is exciting when your

schedule allows. You’re busy and rather than hunt for content

and dates for alumni and dates for current class tours, we will

simply combine them. Alumni will be invited to attend class

learning journeys. It not only simplifies scheduling and

logistics but also offers an opportunity for the class to meet

alumni and alumni to meet the class. Watch for

announcements of such events in our weekly e-newsletter.

Also each class member is now asked to organize a

gathering of 20 friends, family, co-workers — or alumni —

to hear a presentation by one of our strategic partners on

volunteering. Presentations by on Grizzlies TEAM UP

mentoring program, the United Way Allocations committee, or

the Urban Child Institute are offered dozens of times (over 90

such presentations were offered during the Executive Class of

2012 program year!), and you are most welcome to attend one.

And you are also encouraged to volunteer with one of these

three organizations or arrange a presentation of your own. For

more information contact [email protected].

Host a Marshall Memorial FellowsAre you interested in hosting a visitor in your home Oct. 6 -11,

attending a reception for them on Oct. 10, or serving on the

planning committee? Each October, Leadership Memphis hosts

five emerging leaders from Europe in a four-day, five-night

overview of Memphis that focuses on civil rights, faith and

community,

urban-rural

relations, and

insights relating to

the professions of

the five

individuals. Part

of the Marshall

Memorial Fellows

exchange program of the German Marshall Fund, the leaders

spend 28 days in the USA experiencing life and issues in five

cities. We find host families, set up group tours, set up

individual profession interest visits, organize meals and a

reception. If you can’t travel to Europe this year, you can have

Europe travel to you by volunteering to help with this visit.

on the planning committee? For more information contact

Become an Alumni Class CoordinatorWhile you may get letters, emails, and newsletter

from Leadership Memphis, you may not always

understand how the various initiatives and

events we are promoting relate to you. The

messaging might make more sense coming from

one of your classmates. We are reviving the Class

Coordinator system for this reason. So far about

15 terrific alums have stepped up to serve as

class coordinators but we need more. Will you

help? We have a full “job description” for the role

if you want to read it through; the main duty

entails emailing and encouraging your class

periodically to participate in signature events and

also to give us feedback from alums about how

we can improve our programming. For more

information email [email protected].

Thanks to those who have volunteered to serve as

alumni coordinators thus far:

several committees that are open to both board
