Monday  &  Wednesday  3-­‐6pm  03-­‐14-­‐12  

 Ice  breaker:  Bare  Bones  (Itera0on  1)    1-­‐20-­‐12  In  our  first  week  iteraKon  I  was  confused  on  what  item  I  would  use  to  represent  our  bare  bone  design.  I  wanted  to  choose  an  item  that  I  enjoyed  and  used  oOen.  The  item  that  immediately  came  in  mind  was  a  guitar  pick.  Its  simple  shape  and  its  curvilinear  aRributes  caught  my  aRenKon.  

Ice  breaker:  Bare  Bones  (  First  IteraKon  )    1-­‐20-­‐12  

Materials:  The  materials  I  used  to  construct    my  design  were  toothpicks.  The  design  intension  to  use  toothpicks  derived  on  the  cost  of  cheap  material.  In  the  design  process  there  were  effec0ve  procedures  and  ineffec0ve  ones.  The  s0ffness  of  the  toothpicks  made  it  difficult  to  give  it  its  roundness  shape,  so  I  preceded  to  soak  the  toothpicks  for  an  hour  to  achieve  a  more  flexible  bend  from  them.  For  adhesives  I  used  crazy  glue  to  allow  the  s0cks  to  hold  faster.  What  I  learned  from  our  first  itera0on    is  that  my  design  should  have  been  larger  in  scale  and  by  doing  so  the  complexity  of  the  design  increases  in  parts.  Also,  if  the  designer  does  not  commit  to  the  design  the  outcome  of  the  project  wont  be  effec0ve  to  viewers.  Most  importantly  I  learned  that  design  hierarchy  is  a  good  element  in  ones  design  process.  

 Second  IteraKon      (1-­‐25-­‐12)  This  week  I  changed  the  materials  being  used,  the  toothpicks  in  last  weeks  itera0on  were  too  s0ff  and  unaPrac0ve.  For  this  weeks  design  I  used  colorful  paper  clips  to  catch  the  viewers  aPen0on  towards  the  design.  The  paper  clips  were  more  forgiving  in  bending  and  shaping    into  a  curvilinear  shape.  To  increase  the  boldness  of  the  paper  clips  I  twisted  them  together  for  the  scale  to  be  larger.  This  design  I  felt  wasn’t  as  complex  as  I  would  of  liked  it  to  be,  but  I  did  succeed  in  making  the  scale  of  it  larger.  In  areas    that  I  can  improve  in,  I  would  like  to  see  my  design  develop  in  greater  specifici0es  in  design  inten0ons.  Also,  the  rhythm  of  the  design  feels  too  boring    and  slow  paced.  The  journey  of  the  design  needs  to  be    more  complex  and  branch  out  like  different  routes  on  a  freeway.    On  my  future  itera0on  I  would  want  my  design  to  have  more  regularity  and  paPerns  in  it,  so  it  can  develop  a  rhythm  throughout  the  design.  

Third  IteraKon  (1-­‐30-­‐12)  This  week  we  started  to  incorporate  gesture  drawings  into  our  design  process.  At  first,  I  was  hesitant  on  the  drawing  process  coming  from  a  back  round  of  zero  drawing  abili0es.  I  thought  it  would  be  problema0c  for  me,  but  the  gesture  drawings  helped  capture  the  energy  and  movement  within  my  thought  process.  This  week  Jerry  wanted  us  to  apply  dynamics  into  our  design,  so  the  design  can  perceive  as  if  it  was  in  mo0on.  We  talked  about  applying  mo0on  through  ver0cal,  horizontal,  parallel,  right  angles  and  ver0cal  spiral  aspects.  By  responding  to  mo0on  the  design  gets  a  sense  of  energy  of  chaos,  explosiveness  or  even  aPributes  of  slow  mo0on.  From  my  itera0on  this  week  I  discovered  new  materials  to  use  within  my  design.    I  stumbled  across  12  dozen  egg  crates  in  front  of  a  market  and  analyzed    the  shape  of  the  egg  crates.  They  had  a  concave  shape  within  the  inside  and  thought  it    could  be  used  to  show  mo0on  within  my  design.  

Fourth  IteraKon  (02-­‐01-­‐12)  

FiOh  IteraKon  (02-­‐13-­‐12)  This  week  Jerry  showed  us  a  video  clip  of  Philip  Beesley  and  his  exhibit  on  hylozoic  ground  it  was  one  of  the  most  interes0ng  and  inspiring  videos  we’ve  seen  in  class.  Hylozoic  is  defined  as  life  coming  out  of  materials.  In  this  weeks  itera0on  I  applied  hylozoic  aPributes  into  my  design.  Within  this  design  I  was  trying  to  show  quali0es  of  mo0on  from  the  repe00on  of  the  pick  moving  downwards.  Also,  another  aPribute  that  I  liked  in  my  design  was  the  space  within  a  space.  What  I  didn’t  like  of  the  design,  was  that  the  propor0ons  of  each  level  came  out  different  than  each  one.  The  materials  I  used  made  it  difficult  to  make  each  level  propor0onal  and  that’s  something  I  will  keep  in  mind  for  future  itera0ons.  This  week  we  applied  narra0ves  to  out  design  process,  I  feel  that  the  narra0ves  helped  on  direc0ng  my  work  to  be  more  specific  within  the  design.    

FiOh  IteraKon  (NarraKve)  You  walk  into  the  room  where  your  guitar  stands  tall,  like  a  worthy  adversary  .  You  find  yourself  scaPering  around  your  room  looking  for  your  main  weapon  against  your  guitar.  At  last  the  pick  of  des0ny  is  in  your  hand  and  ready  for  baPle.  As  the  pick  rests  firmly  between  your  thumb  and  index  finger  your  heart  begins  to  race  with  an0cipa0on.  From  your  crea0vity  a  single  note  of  E  minor  rings  out,  you  visualize  the  pick  slowly  hiYng  all  six  strings  in  a  downward  mo0on.  As  the  pick  hits  each  string,  the  front  end  of  the  pick  bends  with  the  mo0on  of  the  downward  strum  crea0ng  a  beau0ful  note.  

Sixth  IteraKon  (02-­‐22-­‐12)  This  week  I  feel  that  I  didn’t  commit  to  my  design.  I  was  trying  to  interpret  music  as  a  journey  and  how  it  can  take  you  to  different  distant  memories.  Music  for  me  connects  all  individuals  together,  no  maPer  where  you  live  or  any  physical  appearances.  I  feel  that  my  ideas  were  on  point,  but    the  materials  I  worked  with  held  down  my  design.  Also,  the  literalness  of  the  design  is  keeping  it  from  flowering  into  a  new  complex  itera0on.  My  design  consists  of  paper  clips  on  an  eleva0on  of  a  guitar  pick  body,  within  the  body  there  are  four  spiral  mo0ons.  The  four  spirals  represents  different  journeys  that  music  can  take  you  on.  This  weeks  itera0on  we  started  to  apply  tracing  paper  into  our  design  process  its  been  helping  with  visualizing  different  idea  concepts.      

Seventh  IteraKon  (02-­‐27-­‐12)  In  this  weeks  itera0on  I  changed  my  materials  from  paper  clips  to  wooden  skewers.  I  feel  by  using  wooden  skewers  it  helped  me  regulate  lines  bePer  and  achieve  propor0on  through  triangular  figures.  Also,  I  used  the  Fibonacci  series  to  symmetrically  order  the  thread  to  expand  in  diameter  by  doubling  as  each  division  occurs.  In  this  weeks  itera0on  some  ideas  on  improving  are,  that  the  joints  in  the  structure  were  to  0ght  and  were  leading  to  too  much  tension  within  the  design.  A  new  idea  Jerry  told  us  to  do  to  help  our  design  process  was  to  create  a  0meline  of  all  our  itera0ons  to  show  a  process  of  growth.  By  doing  so  it  visually  shows  us  on  what  ideas  we  had  in  past  worked  and  what  design  process’s    didn’t  work.  

Eighth  IteraKon  (03-­‐06-­‐12)  

Ninth  IteraKon  (03-­‐08-­‐12)  This  week  were  incorpora0ng  skin  into  our  design,  by  applying  a  new  idea  into  our  itera0on  many  new  ideas  will  brew  up  in  our  crea0ve  process.  In  this  weeks  itera0on  I  concentrated  on  crea0ng  a  spa0al  experience  by  crea0ng  a  ver0cal  eleva0on  through  my  design.  I  feel  that  this  week  has  been  the  most  0me  consuming  and  stressful  class  mee0ngs  we’ve  had  in  the  en0re  semester.  Itera0ons  are  becoming  more  complex  in  ideas,  structures,  paPerns  and  organiza0on.  My  new  itera0on  at  the  moment  is  unknown  to  me,  from  feeling  so  stressed  from  my  other  class’s,  inspira0on  has  been  difficult  to  find.  The  new  tectonic  language  we’ve  gained  from  the  course  has  been  changeling.  The  changeling  part    of  shaping  our  vocabulary  has  been,  when  we    present  our  itera0ons    we  need  to  use  specific    transforma0ve  ac0ons  to  describe  our  design.    

ReflecKon  (04-­‐09-­‐12)  

In  this  weeks  itera0on  we’ve  been  discussing  our  final  project,  and  how  were  going  to  organize    the  site.  We  talked  about  the  intro  of  the  site,  organiza0on,  seYng  standards,  research  and  site    Analysis.  Jerry  talked  to  us  about  our  goals  of  expressing  and  iden0fying  emo0ve  feelings  by  correla0ng  design  concepts,  principles,  tectonic  language  into  our  final  project.  In  my  final  proje-­‐  ct  I’m  trying  hard  to  incorporate  all  our  lessons,  that  I’ve  learned  from  previous  itera0ons  and    Class  mee0ngs.  Such  as,    contrasts  can  manifest  itself  in  many  ways,  arrangements  of  things  are  Important  (primary/secondary).  Our  class  was  given  the  task  to  build  our  final  project  on  the  hill-­‐  Side  “country”.  I’m  nervous  and  excited  about  star0ng  this  project,  some  factors  that  fear  me  are    Wind  factor,  slope  of  the  hill,  building  in  dirt  and  rain.  

Tenth  IteraKon  

For  my  tenth  iteraKon  Jerry  wanted  us  to  bring  in  three  design  concepts  for  every  class  meeKng.  At  first  I  was  shocked  and  didn’t  think  I  was  able  produce  three  designs,  but  I  proved  myself  wrong.  With  these  3  designs  my  intensions  were  to  create  a  place  of  relaxaKon  where  students  can  relax  and  be  sheltered  from  the  vigorous  winds.    With  my  first    design  I  created  space  within  space  for  the  roof  porKon.    I  used  a  theme  of  squares  gradually  decreasing    creaKng  a  smaller  square  in  the  middle  of  the  roof.  I  incorporated  the  wind  and  light  into  the  design  by  having  skin  on  two  sides  of  the  design.  The  purpose  of  the  light  factor  is  to  shin  into  the  node  and  create  paRerns  of  light  inside  the  design.  What  I  didn’t  like  about  this  iteraKon  was  that  the  frame  of  the  design  is  to  obvious  and  it  looks  like  a  cabana  for  paKo.

Eleventh  IteraKon  

With  this  itera0on  I  was  s0ll  stuck  on  the  concept  on  crea0ng  a  node,  so  the  design  frame  is  the  same  as  my  last  itera0on.  In  this  itera0on  I  created  a  paPern  of  hexagons  decreasing  into  a  smaller  hexagon  in  the  middle.  I  put  skin  over  the  small  hexagon  and  punctured  small  wholes  to  create  paPern  of  sun  light  that  would  be  projected  onto  the  ground.  I  closed  off  one  side  of  the  wall  and  applied  skin  to  the  le_  and  right  of  it  blocking  the  wind  flow.

ReflecKon  (04-­‐16-­‐12)  

This  week  I’ve  been  researching  new  design  concepts  and  trying  to  find  unique  styles  of  frames  to  incorporate  within  my  design.  Last  weeks  itera0on  I  felt  I  came  up  short  handed  and  lacked  complexity  and  uniqueness.  This  week  I’ve  been  interested  and  inspired  in  the  Russian  architect  Vladimir  Tatlin.  Tatlin  created  the  monument  to  the  third  interna0onal  (Tatlin  Towers).  His  work  inspired  me  with  his  curvilinear  shapes  running  through  the  top  of  the  structure.  During  class  we’ve  organizing  how  our  country  will  fit  into  the  hillside  and  what  different  sec0ons  will  be  incorporated.  Marco  and  I  will  be  taking  on  the  task  to  create  a  pathway  unifying  all  the  students  designs  together.  Are  goals  for  this  week  are  to  respond  to  a  specific  site  aspects,  develop  unity  within  all  installa0ons,  and  research  what  materials,  tools  and  components  will  be  used.

ReflecKon  (04-­‐25-­‐12)  

This  week  our  concept  should  have  been  developed  by  now,  but  nothing  I’ve  designed  has  sePled  well  with  Jerry.  I  know  he  is  hard  on  all  the  students  because  he  wants  to  squeeze  out  the  best  work  out  of  everyone.  This  week  I  created  a  elevated  overhang  that  will  unify  and  help  show  entrances  to  each  classmates  design.  The  curvilinear  shape  is  in  contrast  with  the  curve  that  the  site  offers.  I  also,  added  skin  to  the  end  of  the  design,  showing  the  entrance  towards  Jason’s  site.  What  I  disliked  about  this  itera0on  is  that  the  flatness  of  the  overhang  is  to  familiar  and  doesn’t  spark  a  sense  of  mysteriousness.  I  feel  like  this  design  was  an  improvement  from  my  last  designs,  but  s0ll  isn't  exactly  what  I’m  looking  for.  On  ways  to  improve  this  design,  I’m  thinking  of  adding  some  sort  of  depth  to  the  overhang  to  create  a  sense  of  compression.

ReflecKon  (04-­‐30-­‐12)  

•  Finally!  A  design  that  Jerry  didn’t  destroy.  This  week  was  a  huge  break  through  for  my  design  concept.  I  created  eight  cubes  that  will  be  gradually  decreasing  crea0ng  compression  while  people  walk  under  it.    The  design  will  also  be  projec0ng  outwards  to  mark  the  entrances  to  the  nodes  of  the  site.  The  difficult  part  of  this  design  is  how  to  hang  the  design  and  incorporate  it  with  the  slope  of  the  hill.  Jerry  gave  me  a  good  idea  of  hanging  the  design  with  tension  wire  from  each  tree  on  both  sides.  We  also  discussed  about  puYng  columns  to  help  the  design  be  stable  and  hopefully  not  injure  anyone.  There's  six  remaining  class  sessions  and  Marco  and  I  haven't  even  started  to  do  site  work,  so  hopefully  this  weekend  we  can  start  buying  supplies  and  transport  them  to  the  site.

ReflecKon  (05-­‐07-­‐12)    

•  There's  four  class  sessions  leO  unKl  we  present  our  design  to  the  judges!  This  weekend  Marco  and  I  started  cucng  all  the  Pvc  for  the  cubes,  which  will  be  the  overhang  of  our  design.  Each  cube  will  be  4  X  3  and  we  will  be  added  depth  to  each  one.  Some  struggles  that  we  been  having  this  week  has  been  that,  we  didn’t  realize  how  heavy  each  cube  was  going  to  be,  so  that  mishap  took  us  by  surprise.  We  also,  have  been  struggling  with  creaKng  columns  that  will  support  the  structure  and  will    work  well  with  the  slope  of  the  terrain.
