Environmental & Open Space Commission
LEBANON TOWNSHIP AWARDED
FEDERAL RECREATIONAL TRAILS
PROGRAM GRANT
In late September, the Federal Highway Administration
approved Lebanon Township’s application for a $22,050.00
grant to establish an unpaved trail system on open space
property situated on Woodglen Road. The subject 25-acre lot,
frequently referred to as the Goracy tract, was acquired jointly
by the Township of Lebanon and the New Jersey Water Supply
Authority in 2004, and once served as right-of-way land for
underground piping operated by the Tidewater Oil Company.
The federal funds, which are administered by the New Jersey
Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Natural
Lands Management, will be used to improve public access to
this existing public open space, and will provide additional passive recreational opportunities to all township residents.
As part of a long-term program to expand and further connect
the trail system in Hunterdon County, the Hunterdon County
Department of Parks and Recreation acquired Miquin Woods
Park, which abuts the west end of the Goracy tract. The
proposed trail development project on the Goracy tract will
connect to the Miquin Woods trail system and help to enhance
the existing trail system within Lebanon Township.
The anticipated trail improvement project includes: improvement of a small trailhead parking access area near
Woodglen Road; improving an existing open right-of-way
pathway with conversion to a useable walking trail that will
connect with the trail system within Miquin Woods, and that
further connects to a larger trail system within Hunterdon
County; construction of new trail loops around the perimeter of
the land parcel that will connect back to the right-of-way trail;
and, installation of trailhead signage as well as trail markers
along the trails. The trails will be available for various
recreational uses, such as walking, hiking, horseback riding,
cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, bird watching, and nature
observation.
Lebanon Township’s Environmental and Open Space
Commission (EOSC) will manage the project and will utilize
volunteer groups, township resources and outside contractors to
complete the trail project over a three year period. If you are
interested in volunteering in this community project, or would
like more information, please feel free to attend an EOSC
meeting. EOSC meetings are held at the municipal building every third Monday of the month at 7:00 PM.

Township Depot Continues
The Township Recycling Depot is held on the third Saturday
of each month from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM behind the First Aid
Squad and Municipal Buildings, 530 West Hill Road. Containers
(aluminum, bi-metal, glass, and #1 and #2 plastics) can be
commingled. Cardboard, newspapers and junk mail/magazines should be bundled and tied separately. Household batteries can
also be dropped off. Please observe the rules - we're getting a lot
of plastic that is not #1 or #2.
Battery and Cell Phone Recycling
Rechargeable batteries can now be recycled at the Lebanon
Township Municipal Building. A drop box is located in the
Administrative Office lobby. Rechargeable batteries include Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH),
Lithium Ion (Li-ion), Nickel Zinc (Ni-Zn), and Small Sealed
Lead (pb).
Cell phones can also be recycled at the Municipal Building.
Place them in the same drop box as the rechargeable batteries. We accept any size, make, model, digital or analog, with or
without batteries. Cell phone accessories are not accepted.

THE BUNNVALE BEAT
By now, with your holiday season preparations in full swing,
Bunnvale Library is once again the place to find new recipes,
decorating tips and gift suggestions. While you scan the internet
or pore through magazines and books for these ideas, don’t
forget to pick up books and DVDs to entertain the rest of the
family as you create special holiday memories for them to enjoy.
Are you on the reserve list yet for new DVDs Toy Story 3, Iron
Man 2, or Eclipse, or Anita Shreve’s latest novel, Rescue? How
about Mordecai Gerstein’s cleverly-named children’s book, A
Book?
Come on in from the winter weather to see what’s new in our
Anne Rambo display cabinet. During the month of December,
Genevieve Sliker’s collection of snowmen and snowpeople, will
delight all ages. January features one-of-a-kind works from the
Common Threads Quilting group, arranged by Irene Lightcap.
In February, we will display artwork, essays, photos, sculpture,
etc., from our young patrons, ages 1-12, as part of a “What We
Love about Our Library” contest.
So many patrons tell us how much they love Bunnvale Library. The building itself has a rich history integral to the community.
From its first inception as a school to its current incarnation as a
library, the small red structure draws people from far and near.
The staff often reminisce with visitors who used to attend school
here, lived in the township or knew someone from the area.
Keep in mind that we are available for school, club or special
organization tours. Every fall, for example, the Lebanon
Township Tiger Scouts visit us as part of their “go-see” agenda.
Appreciative as we are of our history, we also recognize the
need to look ahead and grow. In response to patron suggestions,
some of the exciting changes coming in 2011 include the formation of a Book Club for adult readers, more displays
created by schoolchildren, and lists of staff recommendations of
favorite authors, books, audio-books, and DVDs.
Another significant change is behind the scenes: the resignation
of Elaine Wright, longtime member of the Bunnvale Library
Committee. We are grateful to Elaine for her dedication and
service to the library for more than 20 years, and wish her all the
best in retirement.
One unchanging feature is Story Time for preschoolers ages 2-5.
The Winter Session begins January 7 and will continue to be
held on Fridays from 1:15-2:00 PM. Registration is required.
Information will be available at the library and on our township
webpage at www.lebanontownship.net/services/library.aspx
Bunnvale Library is here for you. Along with all of the above,
we have magazines, a book sale cart, a free paperback exchange,
free internet and WiFi access, and copy and fax machines.
Please do not hesitate to let us know how we can better serve
you. We are always interested in hearing your ideas and suggestions.

Education
Education Foundation’s Enrichment Grant
Program Providing Equipment for
Township Schools
Lebanon Township’s Enrichment Grant Program is an on-line
wish list which gives township educators the chance to buy
special equipment for the district’s classrooms. All purchases
made are outside the scope of the regular school budget. Donors
from the community give money directly through a special
website, shortening and simplifying the traditional grant process.
The Grant Program, managed by the non-profit Lebanon
Township Education Foundation, has funded 17 projects to date,
totaling over $22,000.
Donors log on to the Education Foundation website at
www.ltefuture.org and click on the Enrichment Grant tab at the top of the page. On the Enrichment Grant page, visitors can view
all the grants in need of funding, listed by school. Each project
listing includes a full description of what the item is and how it
will benefit students. In addition, the Grant page has a "fully
funded" link, which shows some of the recently purchased
equipment.
Anyone can donate directly through the Foundation’s website
via Paypal, giving as much or as little as they’d like. All
donations are tax-deductible.

Bed Bugs in your Home?
Due to the recent outbreak of bed bugs, Taighe Rainey of the
Hunterdon County Health Department is offering assistance to
anyone who suspects they may have a problem. According to
Taighe, the most effective way to rid your home of bed bugs is
to steam clean. Insecticides tend to push the bugs into other areas of the home, only to have them appear again later on. For
assistance or answers to your questions, please contact Taighe
at (908) 788-1351.
Neighborhood Ski Group Welcomes Skiers
& Boarders
The NEIGHBORHOOD SKI GROUP is gathering for its
FOURTH season. This is a Six-trip Prepaid Group Package at
Shawnee Mountain, created for residents of the township, as
well as their friends and families. Everyone is welcome.
The club skis and snowboards on Sundays, from 1:00 PM until closing, beginning January 9, 2011. All packages are
customized to your personal needs, and include any
combination of Lift Tickets, Rentals and Lessons. Holiday
Blackout days and two make-ups per person give flexibility to
those skiing other locations during the season.
New this year at Shawnee is a Quad Lift, speeding up the trip to
the top of the slopes to under three minutes. Also, there is a new
on-line EZ Sign-up for credit card payments. There are no
meetings or additional fees.
For the last three years, the Neighborhood Ski Group has
proven to be a great way for busy families to set aside and share
quality time together, with the additional health benefits
of being outdoors, laughing a lot, and enjoying the beauty of
winter.
