Legend of Störtebeker
Störtebeker Nikolaus Storzenbecher, or Klaus Störtebeker (c. 1360 in
Wismar – 20 October 1401/1400 in Hamburg), was a leader and the best known
representative of a companionship of pirates known as the Victual Brothers
(German: Vitalienbrüder). The Victual Brothers (Latin "victualia") were originally
hired during a war between Denmark and Sweden to fight the Danish and supply
the besieged Swedish capital Stockholm with provisions. After the end of the war,
the Victual Brothers continued to capture merchant vessels for their own profit
and named themselves "Likedeelers" (literally: equal sharers).
First legend
Störtebeker was a wild, brave und clever pirate from Hamburg. He was
referenced from Hamburg because he drank und played too much and he went to
Ostfriesland where he made a lot of robbery trips with his fleet. He was very
successful and got a lot of pleasures hiding in a castle near by the coast.
After many trips the politicians in Hamburg wanted him and his crew to be
rescued and under sentence of death. It took three whole days to board the ships
of Störtebeker and capture them. Due to the capture of Störtebeker's whole crew
3
he had a guilty conscience and made a deal. He suggested: “If I get decapitated,
let me run without my head along my crew and spare all of my mates, that I walked
past.”
They accepted his request, beheaded him and he really began to run. Before
actually died he liberated eleven men of his crew.
Thus his heroic try became part of the east frisian history and is still told
today.
Second legend
As a popular pirate Störtebeker had no problem with women. They say he was
married to the daughter of chief Keno ten Brok. But once he met a noble girl and
wanted her to be his. She was amazingly beautiful but had been engaged to a brave
knight. And that’s not the only reason why she rejected him, the beautiful lady
didn’t want a rude pirate. Störtebecker became angry because of her refusal and
kidnapped her. On the huge tower of Marienhafe he wanted to force her to love
him. But she still didn’t want him, so the last chance she had to rescue herself
from being raped, was suicide. She ran to a balcony and jumped down from it.
The tragic end of an exciting adventure and nobody knows whether it’s true or
just an old wives’ tale.

Die Sagengeschichte des Störtebeker in Ostfriesland
Störtebeker un Güdje Micheel
De beiden roofden like Deel
To Water un nich to Lanne,
Bet dat et Gott in'n Henmel verdroot
Do worden je beid' to Schanne.
womit man ganz Hamburg umspannen könne. Der Rat aber hat solches entschieden
ausgeschlagen.

FINLAND
THE MYTH OF JURMO
In the 1500s Gustav Vasa, the ruler of Sweden heard about the shipwrecks
occurring near Jurmo Island and their connection with the mysterious fires
burning on the island. He sent people over to the island to inquire. They found out
that the islanders were doing this on purpose to rob the sunken ships. They tried
to explain that they hang storm lanterns from the necks of cows to stop them
from stumbling on the rocky ground. Gustav Vasa sent men to burn the whole island
as revenge because the connection between the shipwrecks and the people on the
island was evident. This is the cause for Jurmo’s barren ground that stands out
from the neighboring islands because soil doesn’t stick to the treeless land and
erosion is strong.
11
After the fire the island was to be repopulated. Gustav Vasa persuaded 10
wedding couples to move to the island by promising them exemption from taxes.
Before leaving to the island only a simple ceremony was held on the mainland. After
arriving the couples were meant to have festive weddings as soon as some sorts of
houses were built.
However, a great storm threw the ship to a reef and all the people on board
died.
A legend has survived from the incident: always on the anniversary of the
shipwreck 10 wedding couples arrive to the place of accident on the shore of
Ytterskär to celebrate their weddings. Men wear black and women wear white
dresses. Their parade is led by the shipper’s black dog. The ship’s first mate, who
was a musician, plays joyful wedding music. The wedding couples dance until dawn.
At the sunrise the brides turn into birch trees and the grooms form dark shadows
around them. Some islanders have apparently seen this with their own eyes.
12
Jurmon myytti
1500-luvulla Kustaa Vaasa, Ruotsin hallitsija, kuuli Jurmon lähettyvillä
tapahtuvista haaksirikoista ja niiden yhteydestä saarella palaviin tuliin. Hän lähetti
tiedustelijan saarelle. Selvisi, että saarella harrastetaan rantarosvousta.
Saarelaiset kuitenkin yrittivät selitellä, että he ripustavat myrskylyhtyjä lehmien
muuttamaan saarelle lupaamalla heille verovapauden. Ennen saarelle lähtöä
mantereella oli järjestetty vain koruton vihkiminen. Perillä parien oli määrä pitää
juhlalliset häät, kunhan laivan mukana matkaavasta puutavarasta saataisiin
kyhätyksi jonkinlaiset asumukset.
Suuri myrsky kuitenkin heitti laivan karikkoon ja kaikki laivassa olleet
menehtyivät.
13
Tapahtumasta on jäänyt elämään legenda: aina haaksirikon vuosipäivänä
Kulkuetta johtaa laivurin suuri musta koira. Laivan perämies, joka oli pelimanni,
soittaa iloista häämusiikkia. Hääparit tanssivat aamunkoittoon asti. Auringon
noustessa morsiamet muuttuvat koivuiksi ja sulhaset tummiksi varjoiksi puiden
ympärille. Jotkut saaristolaiset ovat kuulemma nähneet tämän omin silmin.

THE LEGEND OF
PARTENOPE MERMAID
Naples is also called "Partenope" because its origin is linked to the legend of
the Partenope mermaid. Parthenope was a mermaid with a human face and the body
of a fish, daughter of the God of the sea, Poseidon, and the goddess of the earth,
Era. For this reason embodies all the elements of nature, is the outcome of the
union between water and earth. This creature lived among the rocks in the sea,
where she seduced the sailors with the charm of her voice.
15
One day, the ship of Odysseus come across the area where the mermaids
stayed. Parthenope was madly in love with him but she failed to make him love her,
because he resisted the charm of her song with cunning. Then the mermaid,
overwhelmed by pain, committed suicide: she throwed herself from a high cliff into
the sea,and her body is entrusted to the waves, which carried it to the Gulf of
Naples, where it remained harnessed.
It's just the isle of Megaride the landing point of the legendary mermaid.
Partenope was dissolved and her body was transformed into the morphology of the
landscape of Naples. Naples, precisely, resting her head to the east, on the height
of Capodimonte, and the feet, so to speak, to the west, towards the promontory of
Posillipo.
The rite of the founding of the city is so merged with the cult of the
landscape and its beautiful natural components. It was the stream of the sea who
carried life into Naples and yone takes sustainance, according with the most
basics miths.

POLAND
KAMIENCZYK
A young man lived in Szklarska Poręba. He worked hard as a logger (lumberjack)
to earn money for himself and his mother. One day his mother fell ill. The son
looked after his mother and when they didn’t have any more money left, he decided
to go into the mountains to look for precious stones. He walked and walked through
forests, meadows, and mountain wilderness. Finally, he got to Łabski Szczyt and
then down to the meadow when he saw a little spring, the source of the River Łaba.
He started digging in the ground. He didn’t know that 8 water-nymphs were
watching him. They looked at the young man with pleasure.
20
Then, they hid in the water and only one of them stayed and kept looking at the
man. She realized that she had fallen in love with the young logger. When he
stopped working and started getting ready to go back home, she got scared that
she wouldn’t see him again.
She asked him to stay, got closer to him and put her arms around his neck. The
young logger hugged the water-nymph and said that she couldn’t stay because He
needed to go back to his ill mother. However, he promised to return. The water-
nymph gave him her treasure that was hidden in the grass and then they spent all
night talking about their future together, lying on the grass. On the next day the
young man went back home. The nymph was anxiously waiting for his return but He
didn’t come. She felt betrayed and she stopped playing with her sisters. She was
unhappy and sad, and she cried all the time.
She missed her beloved man so much that one day she decided to climb down
the northern slope of the Karkonosze Mountain to find him. She said goodbye to
her frightened sisters and went towards Szrenica. She was walking along the path
that her beloved had taken. She stopped at the edge of a very high cliff. She had
to be very careful and had to walk very slowly because the cliff was very
dangerous. She held on to granite rocks not to fall down. Suddenly, she looked
21
down and saw the dead body of her beloved logger lying at the bottom of the cliff.
She felt terrible pain in her chest and without thinking, She put her hand on her
heart. When she stopped holding on to the rocks, she lost her balance and fell
down. On the next day the news about the nymph’s death reached Łabskie Źródło
and then her 7 sad sisters ran to Hala Szrenicka. They sat down and started
crying. Their tears fell to the ground and created 7 small springs which joined
their waters to form one stream. The stream flowed to the place where the dead
bodies of their sister and her beloved were lying and then along the path towards
Szklarska Poręba. When the path reached the edge of the cliff the stream turned
into a waterfall which we can still see today.

KAMIENCZYK
Żył w Szklarskiej Porębie pewien młodzieniec. Pracował ciężko jako drwal na
utrzymanie matki i siebie. Któregoś dnia jego matka zachorowała. Syn troskliwie
i górskie bezdroża.
zobaczy go już więcej. Poprosiła go, by został, a potem podeszła bliżej, zarzuciła mu
musi wracać do chorej matki. Obiecał jednak, że wkrótce wróci. Rusałka oddała mu
wtedy cały swój skarb, który miała ukryty pośród traw, a potem całą noc rozmawiali
o wspólnej przyszłości leżąc górskiej trawie. Następnego dnia młodzieniec udał się
do domu. Zakochana rusałka z niecierpliwością liczyła dni dzielące ją od spotkania z
23
siostrami. Chodziła zasmucona, czasami cichutko płacząc. Któregoś dnia nie mogąc
już dłużej znieść tęsknoty, postanowiła zejść po północnym stoku Karkonoszy, by
znaleźć ukochanego. Pożegnała rozpaczające siostry i udała się w stronę Szrenicy,
górską ścieżką, gdyż nią oddalił się jej ukochany.
Zatrzymała się nad kamiennym urwiskiem. Tu musiała schodzić wolno i
ostrożnie. By nie spaść łapała ostre krawędzie granitowych głazów. W pewnym
ukochanego. Poczuła ból w piesi i odruchowo położyła dłoń na bolącym miejscu. To
równowagę i spadła w dół. Już następnego dnia dotarła do Łabskiego Źródła wieść o
śmierci rusałki i wtedy siedem zasmuconych tą wiadomością jej sióstr pobiegło na
Halę Szrenicką. Usiadły i zapłakały.

THE LEGEND OF THE DANUBE
Once upon a time, the sky was a happy place. The Sun and the Moon were always
there, dressed in their best clothes, made of silver and gold cloth, and all the stars
were keeping them company in a never-ending party.
The Sun was still a cheerful young boy and the Moon had fallen in love with him.
She had decided to marry him, as she thought they were a perfect match. But he
knew nothing about all this. As she talked to him about love and happiness, dressed
in her glowing silver dress, he would just smile and look away, to a distant
constellation.
There was nothing much there, nothing but a young star, whose name was Dunarea
(Danube).
As a matter of fact, the star was also in love with the Sun, she would have rather
died out than see him no more. To make long things short, they soon decided to get
married.
25
As she found out about this, the Moon glittered no more. Her pride was hurt, as
well as her heart.
The Moon called three evil spirits and asked for their advice. After casting spells
together, she went to the Sun’s wedding, that was taking place on a beautiful
meadow, and approached the innocent bride. She said a few magic words and
Danube fell into a heaven’s precipice, leaving a light trace behind her and stopped
in the middle of a impenetrable dark forest. The place where she fell was even
called “The Black Forest Mountains”. The moment she hit the ground, Danube
turned into a clear, cold lake.
The wicked Moon made the trees gather around the lake, so that the Sun would
never see it, but Danube asked a fairy that had come to mirror her face in the
water to help her see her beloved one again.
And all of a sudden the lake gave birth to a stream, flowing towards the East, to
meet the Sun. The fairy sent more streams to help the Danube, till the river grew
big and strong.
26
Then, the Moon threw a stone from her crown to stop the river, and the stone
turned into a mountain, but the Danube made its way through the rock.
Finally, the water girl reached the sea and happily embraced it. Every drop of
her water body reflected the Sun’s face in a triumphant meeting.
Although the remorseful Moon offered to marry him and love him forever, the
Sun was so angry that he swore never to talk to her again. He now rides in his
golden chariot and only comes around after the Moon has gone away. She could
never meet him again.
He always reflects his face in every drop of the Danube’s water, but he’s always
alone in the sky.

tineau companie intr-o petrecere nesfarsita.
inima. Ea a chemat 3 duhuri rele si le-a cerut sfatul.
Ea a rostit cateva cuvinte magice, si Dunarea a cazut
intr-o prapastie a cerului, lasand o dara de lumina in urma ei, si oprindu-se in mijlocul
unei paduri intunecate, nepatrunse. Locul unde cazuse, era numit “Muntii Padurea
Neagra”. In momentul in care ea a atins pamantul, Dunarea s-a transformat intr-un
In final, fata
de apa, a gasit marea si a imbratisat-o bucuroasa. Fiecare strop din trupul ei de apa
reflecta fata Sparelui intr-o intalnire triumfala.

GERYONEUS (Geryones, Geryon)
“Kızıl Toprak Adası”nın üç başlı devi Geryoneus, Poseidon’un oğlu Khrysaor ile
Okeanos’un kızı Kallirhoe’nin çocuğudur. Adanın sıcak sular kaynayan bölgesinde
yaşar. Yaşamını dilediğince sürdürmektedir. Kıydığı gençlerin, yok ettiği sürülerin,
aldığı canların haddi hesabı yoktur.
Gücü tanrılardan gelmektedir. Yeryüzünde bileğini bükecek savaşçı yoktur.
Hesabı şaşar. Çünkü “Olympos Tanrılarının Babası”, “Tanrılar Tanrısı” Zeus’un
oğlu düşmüştür peşine!
Zeus, zulmün yaygınlaştığı yerde, adaletin kılıcını oğlu Herakles taşıyorsa,
kardeşine de acımaz, kardeşinin torununa da! Herakles ve ona yardımcı olan adalı
yiğitler tarafından, üç kalkanı delinir, üç kılıcı kırılır, üç başı kesilir Geryoneus’un.
Ada, bir büyük dertten kurtulur; adalı, şifalı kaplıcalara kavuşur.
