Re: Groundwater and Surface Water Sampling Event – November 2012 Husky Injection Molding Systems; Milton, Vermont Vermont Hazardous Site #20094003 Dear Mr. Ferraro:

Leggette, Brashears & Graham, Inc. (LBG) has prepared this letter to present the

results of the November 2012 groundwater and surface water sampling event conducted

at Husky Injection Molding Systems, Ltd. (Husky) located in Milton, Vermont. A Site

Location Map is provided as Figure 1 and a Site Plan is included as Figure 2.

The groundwater and surface water sampling event was conducted on November

5-7, 2012. Based on recommendations presented in LBG’s Supplemental Site

Investigation Report dated December 15, 2011, sample collection was limited to several

target wells and surface water points. Samples were collected at the following locations:

• Exterior monitoring wells MW-2, MW-5, and MW-6

• Interior monitoring wells IW-1 and IW-5

• Surface water stations SW-1 and SW-2 (stormwater ponds located to the south of the Husky facility), STA-1 and STA-2 (along the drainage located to the east of the Husky facility between the parking area and the New England Central Railroad tracks).

Mr. John Ferraro January 30, 2013

Leggette, Brashears & Graham, Inc. 2

Prior to sample collection, groundwater level measurements were recorded from

every on-Site groundwater monitoring well and piezometer (total of 25). The

groundwater level measurements are presented in Table 1.

A groundwater contour map developed from these data is included as Figure 3.

Due to the slow recharge rate and limited amount of water in the wells sampled,

one well volume was purged from each well on the day prior to sampling. Due to

extremely low recharge rates at monitoring wells IW-1 and MW-6, multiple visits were

required for the collection of groundwater samples from these wells. Groundwater

samples were collected via a slow purge methodology using a peristaltic pump and

dedicated tubing.

Mr. John Ferraro January 30, 2013

Leggette, Brashears & Graham, Inc. 3

All samples were collected in laboratory-provided and -preserved glassware and

shipped on ice, under chain of custody to ChemServe Environmental Analysts of

Manchester, New Hampshire for analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), total

petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), and chloride. Results for the groundwater and surface

water samples collected since the submittal of LBG’s December 2011 supplemental site

investigation report are summarized in Table 2. The complete laboratory report for the

November 2012 sampling event is included as Attachment 1.

Mr. John Ferraro January 30, 2013

Leggette, Brashears & Graham, Inc. 5

As can be noted in Table 2, the groundwater quality results for groundwater

samples collected to the east of the Husky facility (i.e., from monitoring wells MW-2,

MW-5, and MW-6) indicate generally improving groundwater quality with respect to

TPH. No TPH has been detected in groundwater samples collected from monitoring well

MW-2, and declining concentrations of TPH are observed in groundwater samples

collected from monitoring wells MW-5 and MW-6, with non-detectable concentrations

noted at MW-5 for the November 2012 sampling event. Chloride concentrations remain

elevated in the groundwater samples collected from monitoring well MW-6. No acetone

has been detected in samples collected from any of these monitoring wells. During the

groundwater level measurements, coolant was observed in interior monitoring well IW-3.

Based on discussions with Husky personnel, this was most likely associated with a

coolant leak in the vicinity of interior monitoring well IW-16, which Husky has

subsequently addressed.

TPH continues to be detected in the surface water samples collected from the

stormwater ponds to the south of the Husky facility and from the drainage to the east.

Notable from the November 2012 sampling event is the high TPH concentration and

detection of acetone in the drainage at monitoring station STA-2, where acetone has been

previously undetected. Notable as well is that the TPH concentration noted at STA-2 is

considerably higher than the TPH concentration noted at STA-1, which is located at the

discharge point for the Husky facility foundation drain upstream from STA-2. This

indicates that the high concentrations noted at STA-2 are likely not due to the discharge

of foundation drain water to this drainage but, possibly, from overland flow from the

parking lot to the drainage that incorporates coolant released to the parking lot during

scrap metal recycling activities.

The high vacuum extraction system powered by the 50 hp liquid ring pump

continues to draw in coolant from three interior wells in the plant and from the recovery

well RW-2 located within the foundation drain. The extraction system continues to

operate as designed without any major shutdowns in 2012.

Mr. John Ferraro January 30, 2013

Leggette, Brashears & Graham, Inc. 6

LBG recommends conducting the next round of water quality sampling in spring

2013 while continuing to operate and maintain the high vacuum extraction system.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

Sincerely, Leggette, Brashears & Graham, Inc.

Dear Brian Monroe

Enclosed please find the laboratory results for the above referenced samples that were received by the ChemServe sample custodian on the above referenced date. Any abnormalities to the samples upon receipt would be noted on the enclosed chain of custody document. This report is not valid without a completed chain of custody with the corresponding control number, attached. All samples analyzed by ChemServe are subject to quality standards. These standards are as stringent or more stringent than those established under NELAC, 40 CFR Part 136, state certification programs, and corresponding methodologies. ChemServe has a written QA/QC Procedures Manual that outlines these standards, and is available for your reference, upon request. Unless otherwise stated on the Chain of Custody or within the report, all holding times, preservation techniques, container types, and analytical methods are analogous with those outl ined by NELAC. All units are based on “as received” weight unless denoted “dry”. I certify that I have reviewed the above referenced analytical data and state forms, and I have found this report within compliance with the procedures outlined within NELAC.
