posibilidad de su ampliación. En todo
caso, sería un incremento del actual
Parque Empresarial de otros 200.000 o
300.000 metros cuadrados.
En realidad, este espacio destinado
al asentamiento de empresas es una
propuesta de funcionamiento global
que se enmarca dentro de la reciente
tendencia de los países europeos por
ser auténticos distritos industriales, que
superan el concepto tradicional de Parque
o Zona industrial, y que se configuran
como grandes dotaciones económico-
territoriales y motor de la competitividad
de ciudades, áreas metropolitanas y
regiones en la nueva economía mundial.
En definitiva, se trata de un
foco territorial donde conviven
establecimientos de actividades:
empresarial, industrial, terciario,
comercial y de equipamientos; con las
instalaciones de logística; así como con
infraestructuras del transporte (estación
ferroviaria de mercancías, puerto,
aeropuerto, plataforma logística…),
lineales (ferrocarril y carreteras),
comunicativas (nuevas tecnologías)
relacionadas directamente con la
actividad económica del área y el
entorno, y con capacidad de atraerla,
desarrollarla y concentrarla.
El proyecto de Parque Empresarial se
inicia con la constitución de la entidad
público-privada SIMMC (Suelo Industrial
de Marina de Cudeyo y Medio Cudeyo)
integrada por la sociedad pública SICAN
(integrante del grupo SODERCAN) y
SODEPISA.
This is because among the
attractions offered for economic
activities, it’s only 15 kilometers
from Santander airport, which means
that it’s practically the same distance
to the port, as well as having motorway
access to the A-8 and S-10 that link
Bilbao, Santander and Oviedo.
Although there are still plots available
in the 1.5 million square meters of
industrial park, of which 900,000
belong to Marina de Cudeyo and
600,000 to Medio Cudeyo, the fact
is that the area that corresponds to
the municipality of Marina de Cudeyo
is running out, which has made the
Town Hall consider the possibility of its
extension. In any case, it would increase
the current Business Park by another
200,000 or 300,000 square meters.
In reality, this space for the settlement
of companies is a global operation
proposal, part of the recent trend of
European countries to create genuine
industrial districts, which go beyond
the traditional concept of Industrial
Park or Zone, and are configured like
large economic-territorial endowments
that drive the competitiveness of cities,
metropolitan areas and regions in the
new global economy.
In short, it’s a territorial focus where
establishments of different activities
coexist: corporate, industrial,
tertiary, commercial and equipment
companies; with logistics facilities;
as well as transport infrastructures
(freight railway station, port, airport,
logistics...), rail and road links,
communications (new technologies)
directly related to the economic activity
of the area and the environment, and
with the ability to attract, develop and
concentrate business.
The Business Park project has begun
with the setting up of SIMMC (Industrial
Land of Marina de Cudeyo and Medio
Cudeyo) a public-private company,
forming part of the public company
SICAN (member of the SODERCAN
group) and SODEPISA.

Enrique Gran. Hasta aquí el recorrido
propuesto para una jornada de paseo
que podría continuar al día siguiente
desde este punto para acercarse hasta
la península de La Magdalena y El
Sardinero.
Santander is monumentalSantander is a monumental city, in both meanings of the word. On the one hand, because it has groups of sculptures, categorised as monuments. And, on the other because, in some cases, there are some creations that are extraordinary in their grandeur, meaning and symbolism.
To begin a tour of monumental
Santander, there’d be nothing
better than to start by the
Cathedral, ground-zero of the
ancient city, around which the
growing population has gradually
expanded to become the modern
city, (with capital letters), that is
today’s capital of Cantabria. In the
and Archaeology of Cantabria, the anti-aircraft shelter “discovered” in 2016 and the Route of the Fire that devastated the Old Quarter in the
year 1941. All this in a radius of 500
meters.
Very close to the Cathedral you’ll find,
not a monument in itself, but what
is fast becoming a notable landmark
for the city; for now and the future.
The Centro Botín, also part of that
cultural ring, is actually a monument
dedicated to the exhibition of all kinds
of artistic expressions.
Nearby, in the Gardens of Pereda,
you’ll see a large monument, in honour
of José María de Pereda, on which
some of the Cantabrian writer’s

most famous works are represented.
Looking from here towards the city,
towards the seafront, a space appears,
presided over by the Statue of Pedro Velarde. This is the neoherrerian styled
Plaza Porticada and, throughout
the year, it plays host to some of the
city’s most diverse festive and cultural
activities, mainly in the summer
months. Although in the Christmas
holidays they install a skating rink.
Retracing your footsteps and turning
to look at the sea-side promenade
you will find more monuments;
such as the fountain dedicated to
the writer Concha Espina, or, a
series of sculptures, the Raqueros, which represent a character which
has disappeared, but is well known
and loved by “santanderinos”. The
raqueros were those children who
dived into the bay to collect coins
thrown by tourists. And beside it,
stands the unmistakable silhouette
of the poet from Madrid, with a
Cantabrian heart, José Hierro.
Leaving the poet and the yacht club
behind, the Palacio de Festivales stands majestically, looking over
the bay; another cultural landmark
for the city and for Cantabria. And
if you dare to take a walk along the
Avenida de Reina Victoria on the way
to the Palacio de La Magdalena,
you will find another monumental
sculpture group, dedicated to the
memory of the painter Enrique Gran.
So far, the proposed day-trip route
could continue into tomorrow when
you’ll get closer to the La Magdalena
peninsula and El Sardinero.

Gema Igual, alcaldesa de Santander
Gema Igual, Santander’s Mayoress
encontrar. Ya sabe las maravillas que
podemos tener, porque hoy en día se
hace el viaje muy documentado. Pero,
sí es cierto, que Santander sorprende
porque es una capital media/pequeña,
tenemos gastronomía, medio ambiente,
sol y playa, cultura y tenemos el
complemento perfecto con la región.
En Santander y Cantabria, que siempre
deben venderse unidas, puedes estar
puedo predecir, invitar o personalizar
y ha cambiado la imagen de la ciudad;
“Santander is a marvellous city to visit at any time of year and for any reason”What does a tourist need to know about the city of Santander?Tourists coming to the city of Santander
already know what can be found.
They already know the wonders that
we have, because nowadays there’s a
lot of information. But, yes it’s true,
that Santander is surprising because
it is a medium / small capital; we
have gastronomic opportunities, a
clean environment, sun, beaches
and culture and it’s the perfect
complement to the region. In
Santander and Cantabria, which must
always be “sold” together, you can be,
on the same day, in a remote village,
taking a walk in the mountains and
at night taking in a show and a
wonderful restaurant.
What characterizes the city?Above all, at this moment, if
Santander is characterized by
anything, it is for being a very
safe city, more and more open to
the world, where more and more
international tourists are coming to
enjoy the culture, gastronomy, quality
of life and wellbeing.
One of the challenges is to de-seasonalise tourism, so that it’s not just in summerWhen I joined the City Hall sixteen
years ago, there were hotels that
closed in winter and only opened in
the season, which ran from Easter to
the middle of October. That’s over.
Santander has wonderful beaches,
but it’s not just about the beaches.
Because the beaches can be enjoyed
throughout the year we have to fight
to have them in perfect condition.
And we need the entrepreneurs in the
tourist sector to run their businesses
all year round, allowing their workers
to become more professional; that
will also be good for us.
Santander is one of the constituent cities of the Smart Tourist Destinations Network, what does this initiative consist of?What all cities seek is to be predictive
and meet expectations and, if we
have the tourism sector monitored, I
can find out via the technology, the

cultural con dotaciones que, aunque
más pequeñas al asumir a grupos

hueco.
culturales. Se ha hecho una alianza
con Gijón y Bilbao que ahora vamos
a ampliar a Logroño. Se ha visto que
se puede trabajar juntos para hacer
grandes cosas y por ejemplo, poder
presentarse de forma conjunta a
ayudas y subvenciones.
preferences of people who come to
Santander and I can predict, invite or
customize that offer for the tourists.
It is about being more targeted in
what we offer our clients.
The Botín Centre is already a landmark for the city now and will be for years to come ...It is a benchmark or an advance
for the people of Santander, firstly,
because we have seen how the
Botín Centre has changed the entire
maritime front, has gained space
next to the bay and has changed the
image of the city; the traffic has been
redirected underground, which is a
benefit for the people of Santander,
even if they aren’t actually using the
Centre. Then, the building itself, the
work of Renzo Piano, one of the most
important architects of the world,
stands on our sea front. And, inside,
the Botín Foundation, which wasn’t
born yesterday, has many years of
experience. So, for many reasons,
for the enclave it is in, for lovers of
architecture and for lovers of art, it is
a window open to the world.
You were recently in Madrid, reviewing the project for the transfer of the Banco Santander art collection.Fundación Botín has some funds, an
art collection and a wonderful coin
collection exhibited in Boadilla. We
are working together so that the main
building of Paseo de Pereda can be
that Centre of Interpretation of the
Bank, linked to the city, and where we
could keep that incredible collection.
And we keep moving forward, the
Reina Sofia (an important art gallery
in Madrid) will have an associated
centre in Santander linked to the
Lafuente Archive and the MAS
museum; these will be in La Florida
neighbourhood, and it’s going to
become the cultural district. We’ve
already come from a cultural circuit
with endowments which, while only
handling groups of 15, has its place.
In addition, the Museum of History
and Archeology of Cantabria (MUPAC)
in Santander has extraordinary funds;
let’s see if a building can be made to
match.
And for the future?Santander is planning the future
very well. The advance, the progress
of the city is based on two things:
innovation and culture. The candidacy
to be European Capital of Culture
in 2016, although it failed, was a
resounding success; since the cultural
fabric of the city was united and it
was seen and assumed by all that,
culturally speaking, there was a long
way to go. As a result, the cultural
bodies joined together. An alliance
has been made with Gijón and Bilbao
which we are now expanding to
include to Logroño. We’ve seen that
we can work together to do great
things and, for example, be able to
present a joint front when looking for
grants and subsidies.
“THE EMOTIONS AND EXPERIENCES THAT TAKE PLACE HERE CAN NOT BE TOLD, YOU HAVE TO LIVE THEM”
Cantabria.
Si ahora te preguntas dónde comprar
lo que te propongo, lo tienes muy
fácil porque todo está al alcance de
tu mano, mejor dicho, de tus pies. Si
estás alojado en Santander o de paso,
seguro que te acercarás en algún
momento de tu visita al centro de
la ciudad para conocerla y pasearla.
Pues en unos pocos metros lo tienes
todo. Así que no tendrás que andar
mucho, porque si estás interesado
en adquirir ropa o complementos a
buen precio, los tienes en una tienda
renovada como Top Queens, en la
calle Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola,1. Si
te gustan los complementos o la ropa
de estilo marinero, en la calle Hernán
Cortes, 40, está el establecimiento
Yates & Cosas Boatique, que también
se dedica a la náutica decorativa. Y si
quieres presumir de aires cántabros,
en la perfumería Güezmes, en la calle
San Francisco, 15, podrás comprar un
perfume o colonia de marca o con
denominación de origen. Este local
también está en la calle Julián Ceballos,

Where and what to buy
Where and what to buy,
that’s the question. It
has to be something not
too big, so as not to take up space in
the car or on the plane back home.
It could be a memento, something
that evokes your stay in Cantabria,
something for family or friends, or a
gift for yourself.
In the capital, Santander, shops and
clothing stores abound. There are
places for all tastes and pockets and
with a very good quality/price ratio.
To remember your stay, you could buy
perfume or a scent that reminds you
of Cantabria or the freshness of the
sea. Every time you put it on, you will
remember your vacation.
It might be a decorative souvenir for
the house and, if you like nautical
motifs , it couldn’t be better; that’s
why we’re in Cantabria.
Now you’re wondering where to buy
what I’m suggesting; well, it couldn’t
be easier. Everything is within arm’s
reach, or rather, your feet. If you
are staying in Santander or passing
through, you’ ll definitely take a walk
through the city centre at some point
and you’ ll find everything within
a few metres. So you won’t have
much walking, if you are interested
in buying clothes or accessories at
a good price, try a newly renovated
store like Top Queens, in Calle

like accessories or sailor-style clothes,
at Calle Hernán Cortes 40, there
is the Yates & Cosas Boatique establishment, which is also

flair, at the Güezmes perfume store,

calle Hernán Cortés, 4, a escasos metros

The north of Spain and specifically Cantabria deserves its reputation to be one of the best places to eat. Whether meat or fish, it’s the quality of the excellent raw ingredients that count. The meat comes with a seal of a Protected Geographical Certificate and with the sea products, fresher would be impossible to find. Shellfish is extremely popular and on every menu in Cantabria, and the preserved anchovies come with a Controlled Quality seal.
ORUJO IS ANOTHER CANTABRIAN GASTRONOMIC SPECIALITY THAT NO VISITOR SHOULD FAIL TO TRY
In terms of pastries and sweets,
Cantabria offers real local delicacies:
quesadas, sobaos and puff pastries of all
sorts. Their extraordinary flavour is due to
the quality of the milk and butter, although
the best thing with puddings would be to
check on the specialties of the house.

HORARIO DEL COMEDOR: DE 13:00 h. a 16:00 h. y de 19:30 h. a 23:00 h.
And of course, we should highlight
Cantabrian wines, which are gaining
a greater reputation thanks to their
improving quality, and don’t forget the
ciders and beers. In Cantabria, what
better way to round off a meal than with
a few slices of local cheese; there’s a huge
choice for all tastes and palates; you can
ask for a board (or they’ll offer you one)
with different varieties, so you can try all
of them and ... repeat.
Now that you know what you can
order for lunch or dinner, the only
thing missing is the “where”. There’s an
extensive selection, but we’re giving
you some clues to guarantee your
choice is right. We’ve chosen some
from Santander, in the vicinity of the
shopping and leisure area of the city. For
example, the Goya restaurant, at Calle
Daoiz y Velarde 25, and El Indiano,
at Calle Hernán Cortés 4. Just meters
from the former, are comfortable bars
and restaurants where you’ll find fine
Cantabrian cuisine and then take a walk
around the centre.
Still in Santander, in the barrio called
Sardinero, there is another great
restaurant called the Balneario de La Concha, with incredible views of the Bay
of Biscay and with direct access to the
beach, a real joy for the all senses.
Outside the capital, in the town of Isla
specifically, (Arnuero) is the Estrella del Norte hotel. Here, not only will you
enjoy the products of Cantabria and the
seafood from their own farm, but also
the fact that it’s only a few meters from
the beach!

El Pendo Cave: UNESCO World Heritage siteThe El Pendo Cave, located in Escobedo
de Camargo, very close to Santander,
is one of the most outstanding of the
10 UNESCO World Heritage caves in
Cantabria, with some paintings and
objects older than those of the famous
cave of Altamira.
Proof of the importance of El Pendo
is the discovery of evidence of human
presence between 80,000 to 14,000
years ago, in the transition period
between Neanderthals and Homo
sapiens.
The main interest in the cave is a large
frieze about 20,000 years old in which
there are hinds, a horse, a possible
auroch and a goat, as well as various
symbols. It is about 80 meters in from
the entrance of the cave.
The cave was discovered in 1878 by
Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola and its
value lies in the spectacular quality of
the frieze, in the information it provides
on Palaeolithic rock art and in the fact
that it was produced in one of the sites
of the southwest of Europe, an area rich
in discoveries of this period.
The cave and its surroundings have
been protected under “Natural Areas of
Special Interest” and there’s a tourist
trail that walks you through Peñajorao,
where information panels along the
way let you see reproductions of cave
paintings not visible to the human
eye. As well as to the El Pendo Cave,
there are other sites of archaeological
interest in the municipality of Camargo
like the Juyo Cave, the Roman and
Medieval San Juan Site, very close to
the Airport, the Medieval Necropolis
of San Pedro and the Ruins of the
Medieval Castle of Collado.

Finally, we must not forget the enormous tourist attraction that is the National Park of the Picos de Europa. With more than 2 million annual visitors, it’s the second most visited Spanish National Park, after Mount Teide (Canary Isles)
o disminuyeran notablemente.
Picos de Europa es un Parque
humanizado en buena parte de
su extensión y como tal ha de
continuar, basando su gestión en
la conservación de sus valores
naturales y en el desarrollo
socioeconómico de sus habitantes en
base a las actividades tradicionales y
sostenibles que en el mismo se viene
desarrollando desde que los primeros
pobladores humanos se asentaron
en estas magníficas montañas, hace enabled the secular action of man
with his cattle and, above all, presiding
over it, the impressive limestone
rocks, in a permanent state of change
through the erosive action of water,
ice and wind.
The inhabitants of this national park,
logically, have been and continue
to develop a particular use of the
territory that has largely shaped their
landscapes, through their livestock
and small-scale exploitation; above all
to obtain firewood, from its coppices
and woods.
Therefore, the management of the
National Park takes into account
these inhabitants and the need to
provide the basic services they need,
as well as the essential continuity of
their traditional activities. Livestock
farming. and agri-food production
would profoundly affect the region if
they ceased or reduced significantly.
Picos de Europa is a humanized park
in a large part of its acreage; and
as such it must continue to base its
management on the conservation
of its natural values and on the
socioeconomic development of its
inhabitants, whose traditional and
sustainable activities themselves have
been developing since the first human
settlers came to these magnificent
mountains, approximately 12,000
years ago.
With this large number of visitors
coming to Los Picos, concentrated
in very specific places such as
Covadonga and Fuente Dé, there has
to be a certain amount of channelling
towards the facilities available, both
for security reasons during your visit
and to ensure that visitors respect the
natural environment and minimize
the pressure on the most fragile areas
of the Park.
This is a singular mountaineering
environment. The Picos de Europa are

Quesos, orujos, carnes, sidras, panes,

The Valley of Camaleño, gateway to the paradise of the Picos de Europa
Dentro
del valle, además de la multitud de
actividades al aire libre (senderismo,
esquí, raquetas de nieve, escalada...)
y la oferta turística (parador, hoteles,
hostales, camping ...), hay una gran
variedad de fauna y flora debido al
microclima que tiene (mediterráneo,
atlántico y alta montaña) .
LO PRIMERO QUE SE TIENE QUE VISITAR ES EL MONASTERIO DE SANTO TORIBIO, UNO DE LOS CINCO LUGARES SANTOS DE LA CRISTIANDAD
Esto hace que nos podamos encontrar
con bosques de hayas, robles, diferentes
árboles frutales al igual que con osos,
águilas reales y treparriscos, rebecos,
etc. Con el añadido que por el valle
pasa parte del Camino de Santiago,
Or at least, this is what the
producers of the film ‘Heidi,

Camino Lebaniego. Además, se pueden
descubrir otros antiguos caminos como

thought, when they decided that this
enclave of Liébana was the ideal place
to shoot the exteriors of the film.
Undoubtedly, Camaleño is a charming
place, and to appreciate it properly, the
best thing is to follow the advice of

which works to preserve the resources
of this area and promote it so that

The gateway to the paradise that is the Picos de Europa is in the Camaleño Valley, which is why they chose this location to shoot the film, Heidi, specifically in Mogrovejo, a beautiful Liébanese village that received the prize of ‘Village of Cantabria 2017’.

THE FIRST THING TO VISIT IS THE MONASTERY OF SANTO TORIBIO, ONE OF THE FIVE HOLY PLACES OF CHRISTIANITY
each and every one of their villages
has, with a view to sustainable tourism.
The monastery of Santo Toribio is
guardian of what the Catholic tradition
considers the biggest piece of the cross
of Jesus Christ. Then, pass through
the capital of the valley, Camaleño,
where one of the most spectacular via
ferratas (climbing jargon) of Cantabria
is located. After visiting Mogrovejo,
with its tower as a guiding lighthouse,
built at the end of the 13th century and
declared a Historic Site in 1985, and
paying a visit to the school museum, it
is best to finish at Fuente Dé, a glacial
cirque, which is the gateway to the
central massif of the Picos de Europa.
Thanks to the cable car, you can
climb over 750 metres in less than
4 minutes and reach an incredible
mountain plateau (alt. 1,823 ms.) The
valley of Camaleño is formed by 33
mountain villages and towns; all of
them have their special charm and love
to be visited, so be prepared to enjoy
their culture and history with their
hermitages, churches, hórreos and
people.
And if we’re talking gastronomy, the
star dish is the Cocido Lebaniego, as
well as the meats and cheeses, with
the designation of origin ‘Quesucos de
Liébana’. In fact, the Camaleño Valley
is the one that has the most cheese
making in the Comarca de Liébana.
We should also mention their fabulous
meat production, as well as the orujo (a
spirited liquer made from grape skins)
and their té del Puerto (an infusion

Liébana, is a paradise for nature lovers.
Within the valley, in addition to the
multitude of outdoor activities (hiking,
skiing, snowshoeing, climbing ...) and
variety of accommodation available
(a parador, hotels, hostels, camping ...),
there is a wide variety of wildlife and
flora due to the several microclimates
found here (Mediterranean, Atlantic

This means that we can find forests
of beech, oak, different fruit trees
as well as bears, golden eagles and
wall-creepers, chamois, etc. Part of the
Camino de Santiago passes through
the valley, which runs along the same
stretch as Camino Lebaniego. What’s
more, you can discover other ancient
roads such as the Camino Vadiniense,
the only one that connects two holy
places: Santo Toribio and Santiago de

americanos, magnolios, palmeras,
tilos, encinas,….).
La que fue residencia del marqués
es actualmente un museo dedicado
a la figura de tan insigne indiano,
mientras que las casas conocidas
como San Rafael y La Casuca,
la primera de ellas con capilla,
muestran en su interior mobiliario
y ajuar originarios de los siglo XIX
y XX. Completan el conjunto otras
edificaciones, bolera, depósito de
agua, pradería y bosquetes, y un
bello jardín, con una fuente de
granito tallado y policromado obra
del escultor Mariano Benlliure y
cuatro estatuas de mármol alegóricas
de gusto francés representando a los
continentes de Europa, Asia, África
y América. Se trata sin duda de un
lugar con encanto, y uno de los
espacios más singulares de Cantabria.
Welcome to the home of the Marqués of Valdecilla

the district of Medio Cudeyo is
the birthplace of Ramón Pelayo

And among the main tourist resources of
this municipality, stands the house and
estate of the Marqués de Valdecilla’s; a
Property of Outstanding Local Interest.
There are several buildings, erected
between the mid-eighteenth and the
first half of the twentieth century, in a
unique natural enclave of almost fifteen
hectares with gardens, lawns and woods
including a variety of specimen trees
(oaks, cajigas, American oaks, encinas,
magnolias, palms, lime trees, ...).
The Marquis’s own house is now a
museum dedicated to the memory of
such an important “indiano”*, while the
other houses known as San Rafael and
La Casuca, the former with a chapel,
show furniture and trousseaux from
the 19th and 20th century. The complex
is completed with other buildings, a
bowling alley, water tank, and a formal
garden, with a carved, polychrome
granite fountain by the sculptor, Mariano
Benlliure, and four allegorical marble
statues, in the French style, representing
the continents of Europe, Asia, Africa
and America. It is a fascinating place,
well worth a visit, and one of the most
unique spaces in Cantabria.

propia cabeza.
• Batalla: batalla dramatizada que hace
una interpretación de alguno de los
hechos que ocurrieron en ese período.
• Vida de campamento: un paseo por el
mayor parque temático histórico del
norte de España.
Time-travelling in Cantabria is very
easy. You just have to come to Los
Corrales de Buelna from August
23 to September 1 and attend the Fiesta
of the Cantabrian Wars (National Tourist
Interest). It’s an absolutely credible
recreation of the events that took place
more than two thousand years ago (29-
19 BC), when Emperor Caesar Augustus
decided to take command and personally
lead the war against the only people who
had resisted dominance from Rome.
Divided into 13 Cantabrian tribes and 13
Roman legions, more than 1500 people
participate during the festivities of the
camp, achieving a magical effect that
transports the traveller; and they become a
privileged spectator of history.
But the Cantabrian Wars Fiesta has
more to offer. During those dates there
are conferences, historical workshops
for children, photography competitions,
cooking and traditional games from Roman
time, as well as dramatized acts that bring a
stamp of distinction to the party.
The players in this war enactment
rehearse throughout the year to make
sure that the past really does come alive
in the present, just for these ten days.
Not to be missed:
• Act of reward: relive the arrival of the
hero Corocotta before César Augusto
to collect the reward he has placed on
his own head.
• Battle: dramatized battle that replicates
some of the events that occurred at
that time.
• Camp life: a walk through the largest
historical theme park in northern Spain.
For 10 days, this population of 12,000 inhabitants, from the foothills of the Saja Reserve, commemorate the battles that took place over 10 years on the fields of Cantabria. That supposed, as a consequence, the complete Romanisation of the territory of Hispania

The Museum of the Bell in Meruelo
The Museum of the Bell, in the town
of Meruelo, is undoubtedly one of
the most curious museums that
can be seen in Cantabria. Located just
over 30 kilometers east of Santander,
it is worth visiting this corner of
Cantabria and take the day getting to
know the nearby beaches or strolling
through some of its pretty villages. Like
the neighbouring towns, it was home
to masters of many different arts:
stonemasons, sculptors and bell-makers,
among others. Much of their work can
be found all over the country, as well as
in their native Meruelo. The Museum of
the Bell, houses an interesting collection
of antique bells and small bells donated
by the makers Abel and Marcos Portilla,
as well as various tools used to make the
bell molds.
The origin of this industry dates back to
the fifteenth century when foundries for
artillery and bells started to appear in
various parts of Spain with place-names
from the board of Siete Villas, to which
Meruelo belonged. In fact, the three
largest bells that exist in Spain today
were the work of - yes you’ve guessed it -
the maestros of Siete Villas. We’re talking
about the 18,000 kg bell, known as: “La
Grande” or “La Gorda” in the Cathedral
of Toledo, the “María” bell, weighing
13,000 kilos, in Pamplona Cathedral and
“La Berenguela” of 11,000 kilos, in the
Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
You’ll find the Museum in the old Schools
of San Mamés, in a building of some 280
square meters.
Meruelo. De hecho, las tres campanas
más grandes existentes hoy en España
fueron obra, ¿lo adivinas? de maestros
de Siete Villas. Se trata de la campana
