Lent, Holy Week & Easter 6th March – 21st April Journey journey is essential it is part of the very essence of being human Moving from childhood to adult, from school to work, from apprentice to master, from who we were to who we are is all part of the journey we may experience as we travel through life. The bible is steeped in the motif of journey. From Abram following God’s call, through wanderings to the Promised Land, through exile, restoration and Jesus’ ministry in Galilee and beyond, the restless people of God kept moving. After Pentecost the Word then travelled, hand from person to person until the whole world was able to know that God was calling them to travel with him. For some the journey of life will be easier with the resources needed to make the dicult transitions, for others the journey can be hard, painful and far too short. One thing we can’t choose is where we are born, but one thing we can choose to do is to help those who travel a hard path. Our Lent appeal this year is to fall in step with the work of CRESS. Instead of denying ourselves chocolate or the occasional glass of wine, this is a truly positive way to mark this special season. Instead of ‘giving up’, we can ‘give’ so that those who are struggling can nd the people of the Chalke Valley are walking along side. We look forward to welcoming you to our events or to any of our church services during Lent, Holy Week and Easter or at any other time! Our Lent Projectenabling self-sufficiency and improving health

Imagine this ...

Through discussion with our team in Uganda who are working with South Sudanese Refugees, we have identifi ed three projects as our Lent focus:

50 256Water fi lters for church community

leaders

Women trained in starting a

business

Cost: £40 - each

Cost: £10 per woman£160 per group

Water in the refugee camps is often not safe to drink

You are at home. It is a familiar, safe place. The people whom you love best are there. You are cooking a meal. All is well.

Suddenly, everything changes. There are screams and shouts. There is violence. Your world is shattered. You are uprooted, tossed around by the hurricane of war.

And so you fl ee. You cannot carry much. Your children’s sobbing pierces your heart. You areterrifi ed, exhausted and broken.

Finally, safety. It is not home, but it is a refuge. There is shelter. There is a little food. You battle daily against hunger and disease. Your oldest child has retreated into a shell of despair. Your youngest cries continually. You sit. You try to comfort. You long for help.

1000Mosquito nets

for pregnant and nursing women

Cost: £25 - 10 nets

£250 - 100 nets

About CRESSCRESS is a small charity but is aiming to make a big diff erence to the lives of the South Sudanese people.

It all started with the Chalke Valley Lent Project 2010. Caroline Lamb had visited Kajo Keji in 2009 and was moved by the lack of education, health provision and poor infrastructure.

On Caroline’s return she started fundraising in earnest to help the peopleshe had met. The mission focus of CRESS is sowing seeds for life, providing the South Sudanese with the skills, training and resources to become self-suffi cient, sustainable and ethical communities.

CRESS originally worked in South Sudan but due to the civil war this became too dangerous. In 2017 CRESS followed the SouthSudanese refugees into Northern Uganda where it now works in partnership with the Dioceses of Liwolo & Kajo Keji.  Part of the work of CRESS is to equip the local Bishop, + Joseph Aba, to train clergy and share the Gospel widely in rural areas.

A Guest for the Night

Agricultural training is helping feed refugee families

During Lent we have a special family travelling around the valley. Would you put them up for the night? Could you feed them? Perhaps off er them something to help with clothing and education?

Meet the Dhuoor family, James, Rebeca, Tabitha & John. Like Posada at Christmas they are a travelling family and will need a host family for

every night during Lent. They will come in their own special box, with a tent, and will have a place for donations towards the Lent appeal. They’ll even have a log book so we can map where they have travelled to and stayed as they moved up and down the valley.

If you are willing to open your house to our refugees email Emily [email protected] who will arrange a list.

with your help, we can improve life for refugees

www.cressuk.org e: [email protected] t: 01722 780789registered charity no. 1141343

There are 1.6 million South Sudanese Refugees living in Northern Uganda - largely ignored by the world and with very limited support from NGOs. Thank you in advance for your generosity. It is truly life changing.

With funds from this Lent Project CRESS hopes to fund:

Water Filters Mosquito Nets

• Water fi lters stop waterborne illnesses causing death especially among refugees under 5 years old

• They will stop the negative economic and productivity impacts caused by diarrhoeal diseases

• 50 water fi lters for our church CRESS community leaders and their families will mean a healthier core team

Why water fi lters? Why mosquito nets?• Mosquito nets are

a cheap and highly eff ective means of preventing malaria transmission

• Women and young children are most likely to develop serious or fatal complications from malaria

• 1,000 mosquito nets will reduce the burden on the health service

Refugees in Uganda

You can donate at a Lent Project event, in church or through our website

Why Life Matters!for we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works Ephesians 2:10

Learning

Why learning for self-suffi ciency?• Training the 256 women

in our agriculture groups to run businesses will help them become self-suffi cient

• Using their new skills in saving and investment these women will then be able to grow more food to supplement their family’s meagre food rations. This will mean less hunger and sickness among refugees
