Slaying the Dragon is Michael Ching’s third opera, after Midsummer Night’s Dream (opera a cappella) and Buoso’s Ghost, a sequel to Gianni Schicchi. The main character in Robin de Raaff’s first opera Raaff (2004) was the tenor who first performed the title role in Mozart’s Idomeneo. 33 year old Anno Schreier already composed four operas inspired by the brothers Grimm, Christa Wolf or José Saramago. Die Taktik is Jennifer Walshe’s first opera. A man leads another man to his cellar offering him to taste a barrel of vintage wine. But when they arrive in the underground vault, he lets him go on alone and then walls him up alive.

A long time ago, Avatars populated endless realms and forgotten dungeons. The defeated computer-controlled monsters, treasured chests and bred Pokemons. Were Avatars the fictional heroes of their time or did they reprogram players to new identities in real time ?

Toshio Hosokawa : The Raven

Monodrama (60 minutes) Libretto : after Edgar Allan Poe’s novel Luxembourg, Grand Théâtre June 27, 2012 with mezzo Charlotte Hellekant. Conducted by David Reiland, directed by Jan Speckenbach.

Orchestra : string quartet, piano, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, flute and percussion First performed in concert version in Brussels on March 17, 2012. The Raven tells the story of a man visited by a raven after the death of his lover. To all the questions the man asks, the raven only answers, 'nevermore' and drifting through states of different emotions the narrator, still burdened with the loss of his beloved, finally lays down in the raven's shadow, his soul trapped and shall be lifted 'nevermore'.

Recorded live in New York on January 1, 2000, less than two weeks after the world première. James Levine conducts.

Based on Edmond Rostand’s play, it is the love story between Cyrano and Roxane. Recorded in Tallinn in 1999-2000. Conducted by Paul Mägi.

In progress Shakespearean Opera Performance Guide This book will include all operas listed in previous studies as well as new operas composed in the last 20 years. It will give all information needed to perform it : characters with tessituras (and complete cast for the world première performance), complete orchestral setting, sets as described in libretto, duration, recordings, publishers. It is to be published before the Shakespeare anniversaries in 2014 (450th of his birth) and 2016 (400th of his death). COWARC holds a collection of more than 6,100 documents published by opera companies since 1989 with information about more than 132,000 performances.
