UK OVERVIEW58% of dairy farms and 33% of beef farms tested positive for leptospirosis1.
In the UK, two strains of leptospirosis have been identified – Leptospira interrogans serovar hardjo and Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar hardjo 2.
If you don’t know the disease status of your farm then speak to your vet about the diagnostic tests available.

RISK TO YOUR CATTLEIn some cases the effects of leptospirosis can be dramatic, such as with a recent outbreak in Ayr where the herd experienced a sudden onset drop in milk production3.
In many cases, however, the underlying effects can go un-noticed but cause huge financial losses. In a study looking at 529 cows in 5 herds4:
» Conception to first service rate was significantly reduced in infected cows
» For a 100 cow herd* this could mean 18 less cows in calf
* For a 100 cow herd, optimum bull ratio/AI, over 3 breeding cycles (9 weeks)

RISK TO YOU AND YOUR STAFFCattle farmers are at particular risk of contracting leptospirosis5 from the urine of infected cattle, which may result in6:
» Protracted flu-like symptoms » Some cases – liver and kidney failure

VACCINATIONVaccination remains an important control measure and continues to be effective at reducing the incidence of clinical disease7 and the risk of infection:
» Infected herds
- Reduces urinary shedding and improves fertility
» Non-infected (naïve herds) - Prevents harmful effects if the disease entered the farm

RECOMMENDED VACCINATION PROTOCOL WITH LEPTAVOID®-HIt is important your herd is fully protected against bovine leptospirosis before Spring turnout as, at grass, uninfected cattle are exposed to the urine of infected animals.
New vaccinators require 2 doses 4-6 weeks apart and the annual booster prior to turnout.
Natural service also spreads leptospirosis so remember to vaccinate the bull.
TURNOUT
1st DOSE6-8 weeks before turnout
2nd DOSE2 weeks before turnout
