Essential Question:
How much do we know about Native Americans?
Project and Purpose:Students identify Native American customs and elaborate on what they have learned after a read aloud on Native Americans.

Materials:• Book Native AmericansfromScholastic(writtenbyJuenesseGallimardandRaoulSautai.1998), specificallythesectionscalled“StoriestoTell,”“TrailofTears,”“KeepersoftheEarth,”and“Three Sisters.”• Chartpaperandwritingtools• PaperandwritingtoolsORcomputerwritingprograms
Procedure:
1. Think/Pair/Share:PartnerstudentsandhavethemturnandtalkabouttheirpriorknowledgeofNativeAmericans.Gatherasagroupandhavepairssharetheirpriorknowledge.Teacherchartstheinformation.(Note:ThiscanbecompiledonaKWLchartunderK;addthestepofcreatingthelistofwhattheywanttoknowunderW.)
2. Afterthechartiscomplete,teacherwillreadaloudtheScholasticbookNative Americans,specificallythesectionscalled:
• “Stories to Tell”ThissectionreferstohowtheNativeAmericansusedsymbolsasawayof saving and sharing their stories.
• “Trail of Tears”Thissectionreferstotheeventsthattookplacewhenlandwastakenaway from tribes in Southeastern United States and they had to relocate farther west.

• “Keepers of the Earth”ThissectionreferstohowmeaningfultheEarthwastotheNative Americans.
• “Three Sisters”ThissectionreferstothemaincropsraisedbyvariousNativeAmerican groupsinNorthAmerica:beans,maize(corn),andsquash.
3. Afterthereadaloud,breakstudentsintogroupstosummarizewhattheyhavelearnedfromeach oftheexcerpts.Eachgroupwillbeassignedaspecificquestiontoanswer:
Group A:WasTrailofTearsanappropriatenameforthissection?Why,whynot?
Group B:WhatdidtheEarthmeantoNativeAmericans?Whatwerethethreesistersandwhyweretheyimportant?
