To the graduates of 2005:

Congratulations!

It is a great pleasure for me to be with you on this special occasion, to shake your hand and

wish you well as you set out on the next venture in your life.

You have much to be proud of, since the successful completion of your University of

Winnipeg degree bodes well for your future success, in your career and in your community.

And all of us benefit from your success, because society is immeasurably enriched by the

kind of critical and creative thinking you have acquired here.

Whatever you choose to do, whether you change the world or just change the life of one

individual, do your very best at it, and know that we will be watching you with pride.

H. Sanford Riley, CMChancellorThe University of Winnipeg

To the graduates of 2005:

When I attended The University of Winnipeg in the early ’60s, my friends and I thought we could change the world. The times may be different today, but the need for engaged citizens has never been stronger. And what better place to become engaged with our world than at a downtown, inner-city university?

Our city’s downtown is in the midst of a renaissance and The University of Winnipeg is at the heart of the revitalization. As you have been working through your graduating year, preparing to move on to new endeavours, your University has been laying the necessary groundwork to move this institution forward. Many of you have contributed, as The University—in partnership with governments, faculty, students, staff, and a host of community groups and citizens—has taken on an increasing role and responsibility in community outreach and Aboriginal and inner-city education.

In all of this, our underlying priority remains—to continue to offer the very best in post-secondary education and to retain the special sense of pride, community, and belonging that makes The University of Winnipeg experience and culture so unique.

This year you are part of our largest graduating class in history – 1,082 graduates in all. Last year our graduating class ranked The University of Winnipeg in the Top Ten of all Canadian universi-ties when asked about their “Entire Educational Experience,” (Maclean’s Magazine, November 2004). At The University of Winnipeg our goal is to have all our graduating students, year after year, leaving with the same high level of satisfaction with their educational experience.

You are now graduating into a challenging world. Your professors, your classmates, and your assignments have provided you with the ability to think critically, to understand other people and other cultures, to be socially aware and responsible.

Stay in touch with your University. Challenge us. And support us as we, through the pursuit of knowledge, continue to help young people develop a solid base, with strong roots and quality skills...to change the world for the better.

Lloyd AxworthyPresident & Vice-ChancellorThe University of Winnipeg

To the graduates of 2005:

Today you are becoming part of The University of Winnipeg Alumni Association.

As a Bachelor of Education (1981) and Bachelor of Arts graduate (1985), there’s something

I discovered as I’ve become active in the Alumni Association that I simply wasn’t aware of

as a student: a lot of work goes into ensuring that the experience students have in the

classroom and on campus is as rich and rewarding as possible.

If the University is to be successful in its role as a catalyst for change, we must all participate.

Alumni can volunteer at University events, welcome new students during Orientation Week,

serve on the Alumni Council. I believe that involvement of alumni—in any capacity—is key to

UWinnipeg maintaining its standard of excellence.

Think of the University as your educational playground … and come back to the playground

and play as often as you can. Take a class, participate on a committee, mentor a student.

My attitude as the President of the Alumni Association is to try to make the Association as

fun and playful as possible with the goal of encouraging alumni to come back and reflect

on the good times you’ve had at the University, to think ahead about how you can make

life-changing opportunities happen for current students—giving back to the University

that has given so much to each of us.

Shirey Render, Class of ’64, is an alumnus who carries the University’s values with her out

into the world. Today, we honour Shirley Render—aviator, historian, and politician—with

the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Her work and contributions to the larger community are

testaments to the education she received here.

And today, Class of 2005, we also celebrate your accomplishments. Congratulations to each

of you. May your lives be testaments to what you’ve learned here.

Come back and play as often as you can!

Deb Radi, Class of ’81, ’85President, University of Winnipeg Alumni Association

John Polanyi Honorary Doctor of Laws

Dr. John Polanyi is one of Canada’s preeminent scientists and a Nobel Laureate (Chemistry, 1986). In the late 1950s, when nuclear weaponry brought concerns of human survival to the forefront, Polanyi stood out as a voice of reason—a clear example of science coupled with conscience.

Polanyi became convinced of the need for scientists to involve themselves in public affairs, especially as related to issues of nuclear war. He has written and given lectures extensively on science policy, the control of armaments, and peacekeeping.

Polanyi has called upon his fellow scientists and scholars to stand in opposition to tyranny and to constitute themselves as an international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) of exceptional authority. “[Moral authority] should be used to support the movement on which all our hopes for the future depend; the movement toward peace based on respect for the individual, whose manifesto is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” he wrote. “The time has come to

underscore the fact that our and others’ rights are contingent on our willingness to assert and defend them.”

Polanyi has received numerous awards over the course of his remarkable career. He is a Fellow of the Royal Societies of Canada (FRSC), of London (FRS), and of Edinburgh (FRSE), also of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the US National Academy of Sciences, the Pontifical Academy of Rome, and the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is a member of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, and a Companion of the Order of Canada. Polanyi was awarded the Royal Medal of the Royal Society of London and holds 30 honorary degrees from six countries.

In addition to his distinguished scientific career, Polanyi was a founding member of the Committee on Scholarly Freedom of the Royal Society and of the Canadian Committee for Scientists and Scholars, an international human rights organiza-tion of which he is the current president. In 1960, Polanyi was the founding chair of the Canadian Pugwash Group. He is co-editor of a book, The Dangers of Nuclear War, and was a participant in the “Canada 21” study of a 21st century defense posture for Canada. Currently, Polanyi is a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Toronto where he conducts research on the molecular motions in chemical reactions in gases and at surfaces.

For his great accomplishments as a scientist, human rights activist, and promoter of peace, The University of Winnipeg is proud to bestow upon Dr. John Polanyi an Honorary Doctor of Science.

James (Jim) MacDonald

Honorary Doctor of LawsToday, James (Jim) MacDonald is Vice-President of Canada’s RBC Dominion Securities, where he has been an investment advisor for more than 35 years. But back in high school if you’d asked MacDonald, “What are you going to be when you grow up?” he would have struggled for an answer.

“By the end of my second year of Grade 9, not having passed French, I was put in the High School Leaving Program. At the end of Grade 11, I was at home supposedly studying for my finals, when a realization hit me,” MacDonald recalled. “School for me was finished. I had no expertise, no training, and no abilities. I suddenly got this awful feeling of anxiety. I still remember that feeling.”

MacDonald enrolled at The University of Winnipeg Collegiate, and that feeling of anxiety began to subside. Soon, he began to thrive, then to excel. MacDonald graduated from The Collegiate (1964), earned a B.Sc. in Administrative Studies from the University of North Dakota (1968), and launched a career in finance that he never could have imagined in his early high school days.

Ever since, MacDonald has been a loyal supporter of the University and its Collegiate, “giving back” to the school he credits with turning his life around. He was the founder of The University of Winnipeg Collegiate Alumni Association in the 1970s, and served as its inaugural President for its first five years. MacDonald joined The University of Winnipeg’s Board of Regents in 1980. Over the nine years which MacDonald served on the Board, he initiated and chaired the Endowments Investment Review Committee and the Finance Committee, and served as Treasurer.

MacDonald is also a founding director and Vice-Chair of the University of Winnipeg Foundation, and chairs the Foundation’s Investment Committee. MacDonald continues to support the mission of The Collegiate, serving as Chair of the Foundation’s Collegiate Appeal, an initiative within The University of Winnipeg’s Capital Campaign.

In April 2005, MacDonald donated an unpar-alleled $1 million dollars to The University of Winnipeg Collegiate for student bursaries, the largest single donation in the University’s history. “This gift is my way of saying thank you for all that The Collegiate has done for me,” said MacDonald. It is also his way of ensuring that future generations of students have the same opportunities as he did, regardless of financial means.

In addition to his exceptional philanthropy and service to the University, MacDonald’s leadership extends beyond UWinnipeg to the wider community. MacDonald has served on the boards of Ducks Unlimited, the United Way of Winnipeg, The Nature Conservancy, and the Manitoba Lung Association.

The University of Winnipeg is proud to call Jim MacDonald a member of its family of alumni, and honoured to present him with an Honorary Doctor of Laws today.

Ida Margolis has spent the last 20 years exploring, debating, and discussing everything from world politics to medical ethics thanks to The University

of Winnipeg’s Division of Continuing Education 55 Plus Program.

“You learn something new everyday,” says Margolis, a sprightly 93. “I recommend it [55 Plus Program]. Taking classes keep you from becoming dull...It’s much better than staying home and staring at the walls. It keeps your mind sharp.”

Today, The University of Winnipeg is awarding Ida Margolis an Honorary BA in recognition of her participation in the 55 Plus Program for 20 years or more and her commitment to life-long learning.

Margolis, who graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1932 with a BA, spent years raising her family and working as

a volunteer with mentally and physically challenged adults, unwed mothers, and new immigrants.

When she heard about the DCE 55 Plus Program in the early 1980s, she was immediately interested. So much so that since registering for her first class, and in spite of getting around mainly by wheelchair now, Margolis has attended weekly classes continuously for two decades.

She points to Yoram East’s lectures on current events and Middle East politics as her favourites because “they are always interesting and he’s easy to listen to.”

“It’s nice to be recognized,” adds Margolis of The University of Winnipeg Honorary BA degree. “I enjoy the wide range of topics offered through the 55 Plus Program and am glad I have been able to maintain coming regularly.”

Today, the University is proud to present Ida Margolis with an Honorary Bachelor of Arts in recognition of her lifelong learning.

When Edna Whitcomb turned 18 in 1930, Greta Garbo and Bette Davis graced the silver screen, bread cost less than a dime, and the Great Depression was just beginning. Whitcomb was ready to

attend university, but says a post-secondary education just wasn’t in the cards. “When I was young I was a smart enough kid, but I just didn’t have enough money to go to university,” she stated matter-of-factly.

Instead, she married, raised a family, and took on a variety of part-time jobs. When she retired in the 1980s, she heard about The Division of Continuing Education’s 55 Plus Program. Finally, it was her chance to attend university. “Better late than never!” laughs Whitcomb, now 93. “And this time, there are no exams—you can just enjoy it.”

Like Ida Margolis, who will also be honoured today, Whitcomb enjoys classes in world politics and has a special interest in film. “I’ve enjoyed all the classes I’ve taken,” says Whitcomb. “Some I’ve taken more than once!”

Whitcomb is a strong advocate of lifelong learning, and encourages other seniors to participate in the 55 Plus Program and get involved in University life. “I tell them how I like it and that it’s the way to go,” says Whitcomb, who believes in the importance of staying active and engaged. “It gets you out, you learn something, and you meet other people. With all of those things, why wouldn’t you attend?”

For her dedication to continuing education, The University of Winnipeg is pleased to present Edna Whitcomb with an Honorary Bachelor of Arts.

Don Kerr Fellowship in United College

Don Kerr joined The University of Winnipeg Physics Department in 1969 and spent the next 35 years serving the University with great distinction. Kerr contributed to the Department of Physics, the Faculty of Arts and Science, and the University as a whole—all the while maintaining an active research program.

The Winnipeg-born and Manitoba-educated physi-cist came to teach at UWinnipeg after spending two years as a Research Fellow at Harvard University completing his post-doctoral work on mass spec-trometry and the previous two years as a National Research Council post-doctoral fellow in Germany.

“Don has an outstanding record of academic schol-arship,” says Physics Chair Randy Kobes. “He has held an NSERC operating grant, or its equivalent, since 1969, which is a remarkable accomplishment. As the awarding of such grants undergoes a rigor-ous peer-reviewed process, it is apparent that Don’s contributions have consistently been recognized as significant both nationally and internationally.”

Kerr, who retired in 2004, has published approxi-mately 80 refereed journal articles and conference

papers. The University of Winnipeg recognized Kerr’s achievement in research in 1990 when he was awarded—along with his long-time collabora-tor Steen Dannefaer—the Erica and Arnold Rogers Award for Excellence in Research. In addition to his scholarly activities, Kerr was Chair of the Physics Department from 1981-82, a mem-ber of Senate, and member of many committees including Search and Nominating Committee for President, Committee to Nominate a Chancellor, and Review Committee for Promotion to Full Professor. Throughout his career, Kerr contrib-uted greatly to the life of the department and the University both in administrative capacities and providing leadership and guidance. From 1982-92, Kerr served two terms as Associate Dean (Budget and Planning), an appointment he considers a career highlight. Colleagues note that he carried out the Associate Dean responsibilities with the utmost professionalism, integrity, and fairness.

“Professor Kerr was able to excel at his administra-tive duties without ever losing his enthusiasm for teaching and his love of physics,” states Dean of Science Gabor Kunstatter.

And, according to Michael McIntyre, Dean of Arts and Science at the time, “Don was simply the most respected administrator at the University. Don had a very powerful influence within the University that derived, in large measure, from the fact that he always behaved as a colleague. He was of the faculty, not from it. I think Don epitomizes, without even a hint of cliché, the phrase ‘a gentleman and a scholar.’”

Today, Kerr is being honoured for his exemplary research and his dedication to The University of Winnipeg when he is admitted as a Fellow of United College.

“It’s very gratifying to be given this significant honour,” Kerr says. “I am pleased to be joining the company of those who have received Fellowship in United College and I am proud to continue to be a part of The University of Winnipeg.”

John Hofley Fellowship in United College

John Hofley knows that education can change lives.

“Education is about transformation,” says Hofley, who has witnessed generations of students grow, change, and take on productive roles in their com-munities. He also knows it to be true in his own life.

The son of working class parents, Hofley was the first in his family to attend university. “But I had wonderful teachers in high school who encour-aged me to go on to university,” recalls Hofley, who graduated from The University of Winnipeg (then United College) in 1960 with a double major in English and Philosophy. He went on to complete both an MA and PhD in Sociology at the University of North Carolina. After teaching four years at Carleton University, and a year in India as a Shastri Fellow, he joined The University of Winnipeg in 1971 as Chair of Sociology department.

In addition to his teaching and research, Hofley served in a number of administrative posts, culminating in a term as Dean of Arts and Science. In 1998 John received the Farquhar Award for contributions to self- governance.

But no matter what his role, Hofley has strived to live out the University’s mandate of both excellence and access.

Hofley has been the champion of student access on a variety of fronts, instituting groundbreaking policies including the forgiveness clause, providing students who experience a rocky transition to university with a clean slate on their academic record following a five-year break in their studies. He also launched the 50-60 program under which students who underperform in high school may enter university on “conditional status” despite marginal grades. “There are many students who may not do well in high school, but are very capable,” says Hofley. “They come to university and thrive-I’m very proud of that.”

Hofley has also been a supporter of the College and University Bound program (CUB) for more than a decade. CUB is a program designed to introduce high school students to post-secondary education who may never have considered it an option, whether for reasons of money, culture, or circumstance. “Last year, 75 percent of the graduating class went on to post-secondary education,” reports Hofley.

He has also made significant contributions to the university on other fronts, including serving on The University of Winnipeg Faculty Association, President of the UWinnipeg Retirees Association, and member of the Board’s Pension Committee. Following his retirement, Hofley was asked to become Acting Coordinator of the Women’s Studies Program, of which he has long been a supporter. He continues to teach courses and par-ticipate in University affairs, and is a government appointee on the Council that is establishing the University College of the North.

“After he retired, he did just as much or more than before,” says Neil Besner, Dean of Humanities. “John personifies devotion to the University and service in every imaginable sector.”

For these reasons, and many more, The University is proud to name Dr. John Hofley to fellowship in United College.

Shirley Render The Distinguished Alumni Award

Shirley Render’s motto is a simple one: “Follow Your Dream.”

It’s a phrase she takes to heart, one that has led her to careers as diverse as pilot, politician and cabinet minister, author of two ground-breaking books (with a third underway), social worker, international public speaker, and one of the few women in the world who has flown an F-18—one of the world’s top military aircraft.

Render is also one of the few aviation historians in Canada and for years was the only professional female aviation historian in Canada. As such, she was the only woman on many projects in the aviation industry. For example: Render was the only woman member of the Royal Canadian Mint Panel; the only woman member of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s 50th Anniversary Committee; the only woman Patron of the Canadian Bush Plane Heritage Centre in Ontario.

She has also led the way for women as the first woman Director of Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame. Render was the first woman elected as a Director on the Western Canada’s Aviation Board, the first female President, and is considered the first woman Executive Director of a major aviation museum in North America.

Render has won many awards recognizing her skill as a pilot, her academic prowess, and her community service. Render received the James Gray Medal in History upon receiving her master’s degree, the Governor General’s Commemorative Medal for recognition of her public service in her community as a volunteer and Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), and numerous awards for her work in preserv-ing and promoting Canada’s aviation heritage, such as the YM-YW Woman of Distinction Award and the International NW Aviation Council President’s Award.

The award she receives today—The University of Winnipeg’s Distinguished Alumni Award—is presented at each Convocation to a graduate of exceptional achievement, and who has demonstrated loyal and dedicated service to the community or the University. Shirley Render, a member of the Class of 1964, is clearly one such distinguished alumnus. The University is proud that she is among our family of alumni, and pleased to present her with the Distinguished Alumni Award today.

Making science fun was the impetus for University of Winnipeg Physics Chair Randy Kobes to found the Manitoba chapter of Let’s Talk Science in 1998.

Ironically, as the world relies more on technology, many people continue to harbour a dislike and fear of science. Math and physics seem to be particularly intimidating.

But Kobes wanted to change these perceptions, aiming his campaign at children. “The purpose of Let’s Talk Science is to install a sense of excitement about science outside of the University and coun-teract this negative mindset,” explained Kobes. The Let’s Talk Science Partnership Program is a national non-profit organization working to develop scientific literacy through innovative edu-cational programs. Volunteer University students visit public school classrooms and help science teachers make their curriculum up-to-date and interesting.

Remarkably, in tandem with establishing and growing Let’s Talk Science in Manitoba, Kobes has chaired the Physics Department, supervised grad-uate and summer undergraduate research assis-tants, published and refereed papers, maintained an NSERC research grant (one of the largest in the University), taught courses, and worked effectively on many departmental and University committees.

“There is no doubt that Randy’s selfless devotion to the promotion of science has resulted in an increased appreciation for science in the province, as well as an increased awareness of science programs at The University of Winnipeg,” said Gabor Kunstatter, Dean of Science.

Dean of Education Annabelle Mays added, “Randy’s project has contributed significantly to creating connections with the community, in particular, between University students and school children. In addition, it has highlighted the nature of the expertise which resides in the University.”

Each year, 70 University of Winnipeg student volunteers “talk science” with over 500 youth at their elementary and high schools and in UWinnipeg classrooms and labs—part of 600 scientist volunteers at universities across Canada who interact with 20,000 students annually through Let’s Talk Science.

For his contribution to the promotion of science awareness, the University is proud to award Randy Kobes the Marsha Hanen Award for Excellence in Creating Community Awareness.

Keith Louise Fulton The Robin H. Farquhar Award For Excellence In Contributing To Self-Governance

“I have a vision of a university,” says Keith Fulton—it includes fairness, openness, acceptance, and the spirit of community. “And whenever I encoun-tered a way to work that would further that vision, then I accepted the challenge, if I possibly could.”

In addition to her role as a professor of English and Women’s Studies, Fulton has been a member of the Core Committee on long-term curriculum strategy, Chair of the FCAS Curriculum Development Committee, and a member of the Nuts and Bolts Committee charge with the complete restructuring of the Arts and Science Faculty. “This is work that has genuinely changed how we are organized and what we teach,” says Linda Dietrick, professor of German.

Fulton also served as a member of the UWFA Pay Equity Committee, the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition Coordinating Committee, and

the Aboriginal Initiatives Academic Planning Committee—to name only a few. Fulton was also a key figure in nurturing the University’s successful Women’s Studies program since its beginning in the 1980s, serves on numerous editorial boards, and pursues a variety of creative endeavours.

“Those of us who know Keith—and by now, just about everyone in the University knows her from serving on some committee together!—treasure her experience, judgment, energy, and immense people skills that she always brings to her self-governance work,” said Dietrick.

“Keith did all of this work, while maintaining her commitments as a Robson Award-winning teacher, community activist, and researcher,” Dietrick added.

“I have been trying to create a university, an all-around university, that really helps students grow into the people they want to be,” explains Fulton. “You can’t just do that in the classroom, or just in one area. It’s all the way around.

“Creating a system and academic standards that support a sense of justice, trying to create a rela-tionship among staff, faculty, and administration that really facilitates an open environment—that filters down to the students,” she adds.

When Robin H. Farquhar established the Award for Excellence in Self-Governance, he wrote that the contributions of the University’s employees are “crucial to our success and deserving of acknowl-edgement and gratitude,” adding that “Exceptional performance in this regard should be publicly acclaimed and rewarded.”

Today, The University of Winnipeg is pleased to acknowledge the exceptional contributions of Keith Louise Fulton, this year’s recipient of the Robin H. Farquhar Award.

Each year, the Clifford J. Robson Award for Excellence in Teaching is presented to a faculty member who brings a special quality to the class-room—the ability to make a subject truly come alive. In the words of one of the many students who nominated John Lehr for this prestigious award, “He is an excellent professor, but more than that, he is a fantastic teacher.”

Lehr, who began his career as a professor of Geography at The University of Winnipeg in 1976, is a historical geographer. His research interests include agricultural settlement in Western Canada and Ukrainian pioneer settlement in both Western Canada and South America. Lehr is well known for his efforts to make subject matter relevant, and his ability “to impart knowledge in a way that is as accessible as it is enlightening,” writes one student. Acknowledging that different students have dif-ferent learning styles, Lehr incorporates slides, PowerPoint presentations, case studies, guest lec-turers, and field trips—a particular favourite—into each of his courses. “If you experience something, or if you see something, you will never forget it,” explains Lehr.

Similarly, students are encouraged to be active participants in the learning process, sharing their own ideas, research, and diverse personal histories. “Dr. Lehr encourages a dynamic flow of informa-tion between the student and the professor that could not possibly be generated by someone who doesn’t recognize the potential in every student he teaches,” wrote one honours student. Another thanked him for acknowledging her cultural back-ground as an Aboriginal student, following a class in which she was asked to share her expertise and unique perspective on history.

As for Lehr, he says the interaction with students is the best part of his work. “It’s great being in contact with younger people, people who’ve got good ideas, who come from tremendously variant backgrounds,” said Lehr, who often has a steady stream of students going to and from his office, looking for advice, assistance with coursework, or mentoring. They know that no matter what he is working on, Lehr is a professor who will take whatever time is needed and go the extra mile. “It is very satisfying when you feel you can help some-body achieve what they want,” says Lehr. “Many of us can hardly believe we get paid for doing what we like. It’s fun!”

On behalf of the students of The University of Winnipeg, the University is proud to present Dr. John Lehr with the Clifford J. Robson Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Michael McIntyreClifford J. Robson Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching

Michael McIntyre is described by his students as a brilliant professor with a great passion for psychology, a storyteller of science, an exceptional teacher, a mentor, and a friend.

Today, McIntyre is being honoured with the Clifford J. Robson Award for Excellence in Teaching on behalf of his students. “I am very pleased,” said McIntyre. “I love teaching and receiving this recognition from my students is particularly gratifying.”

McIntyre joined The University of Winnipeg Psychology Department in 1975 after earning his PhD in neuropsychology at the University of Minnesota and completing his post-doctoral fellowship at Cornell University, New York. He served as Dean of Arts and Science from 1982 to 1992, earning the respect and admiration of both his colleagues and students.

“While keeping his fMRI research active and maintaining the University’s valuable access to

its lab, Dr. McIntyre covered a staggering array of teaching assignments,” said Psychology Chair Hinton Bradbury. “He’s a phenom: firing on all cylinders at all levels.”

As an affiliated scientist with the National Research Council (NRC) since 1993, McIntyre served as Program Leader in the Functional Neuroimaging Program and continues to conduct research at the Institute for Biodiagnostics in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). McIntyre has published his research widely in more than 40 refereed journal articles and 55 conference presentations and informal publications.

McIntyre is also considered “a trusted advisor” to students planning graduate studies—in any disci-pline. In seeking advice from McIntyre on options for grad school, one nominator wrote, “His agenda was my agenda.”

During his term as Dean, McIntyre was proud to have launched the University’s Centre for Academic Writing. In all of the classes he teaches, McIntyre still places great emphasis on writing, in line with his teaching philosophy that a liberal education should develop a broad set of expressive, analytic, and creative abilities. “This allows the student to adapt to a wide range of different situations. When we consider that 75 per cent of our graduates of just 25 years ago work in occupations that did not exist at the time of their graduation, the importance of broadly adaptive intellectual skills is patent,” he said.

And, indeed, McIntyre’s students are continually enriched by this tenet. One nominator wrote, “Dr. McIntyre was the most inspiring teacher of my undergraduate years. He has the remarkable talent of not simply lecturing but thoroughly engaging students’ minds.”

On behalf of his students, The University of Winnipeg is honoured to present Dr. Michael McIntyre with the Clifford J. Robson Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching.

The Marsha Hanen Award for Excellence in Creating Community Awareness is funded by the Toronto Dominion Bank in honour of the fourth president of The University of Winnipeg. It recognizes the activities of faculty and staff which reinforce the value of a liberal education and expand understanding of, and respect for, the University.

THE CLIFFORD J. ROBSON MEMORIAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING.

In 1971, Dr. John Zubeck of the University of Manitoba was instrumental in establishing the Robson Award in memory of Dr. Clifford J. Robson, one of The University of Winnipeg’s fin-est teachers and a tireless worker on behalf of students. This award commemorates Dr. Robson’s contribution to the teaching of psychology in this province and recognizes a University of Winnipeg faculty member who shares Dr. Robson’s reputation for dedication and love of teaching. Nominations are accepted from the entire University community and the recipient is chosen by a committee made up of faculty, staff, and students.

THE ROBIN H. FARQUHAR AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN CONTRIBUTING TO SELF-GOVERNANCE

This award was established in 1989 by the University Board of Regents in honour of Dr. Robin H. Farquhar, the third President of The University of Winnipeg. The purpose of the award is to recognize a University faculty or staff member who contributes significantly to the self-governance function of the University. Dr. Farquhar valued the efforts of those who volunteer their time to serve on committees, boards, and task forces, thus maintaining the traditional and important autonomous nature of a university. Nominations for this award are requested from faculty and staff and the recipient is chosen by a committee representing constituencies of the University.

The Coat of Arms of The University of Winnipeg was officially adopted by the governing

bodies of the University during the academic session of 1972–73.

The elements found within the Coat of Arms have been associated over the years with both

Manitoba and Wesley Colleges, the ancestors of United College. The bunch of grapes in the

lower portion of the inner shield derives from the Coat of Arms of Manitoba College. The

grape symbol has its origin in the College seal adopted in the charter of 1871. The cross, the

lamp, and the open book derive from the Coat of Arms of Wesley College, designed in 1897

by Dr. J.H. Riddell. The cross, the symbol of sacrificial service in the interest of humanity,

was the basis for his design and upon it he placed a shield, the symbol of protection. The

lamp, the symbol of light, also represents learning, to which the Colleges have been devoted

for over a century in the Province of Manitoba. The open book, representing instruction in

the way of life and the bringing of understanding to the student, symbolizes knowledge in

a general sense, although it may carry overtones of the Holy Scriptures in a more limited

interpretation.

The motto, placed upon a scroll below, is the United College motto, here retained: Lux et Veritas Floreant (Let Light and Truth Flourish). The words catch the central import of the

lamp (light) and the open book (truth), and express the hope that both may flourish (as the

grape) in a Christian land (the cross).

The banner, prominently displaying the Coat of Arms, was unveiled in 1988. The volunteer effort of Pat Corner, Fran Farquhar, Susan Ferguson, and Sonya C. Wright took more than 1000 hours. Over 400 metres of thread and 30 metres of wool material went into the project which uses such traditional techniques as quilting, embroidery, and crewel.

The Banner

Academic dress originated in medieval times to provide warmth in the damp halls of learning. In its present form it includes a gown, hood (worn over the shoulders), and a cap or mortarboard. All universities have distinctive dress for each degree offered which explains the variety seen in the academic procession.

University of Winnipeg academic dress conforms to the North American Intercollegiate Code. All graduates wear a black gown which varies according to the degree conferred. The bachelor’s gown is worn closed in front and is distinguished by its pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is designed to be worn either open or closed in front and has closed sleeves with an opening to free the hands. The front portion of the sleeve below the opening has a long semi-circular cut-out. Doctorate gowns also may be worn open or closed. They are faced with velvet.

The edging colour on the hood indicates the faculty in which a degree is conferred: Theology—red; Science—gold; Education—blue; Arts—white. The width of the edging is determined by the degree: three inches for doctors; two inches for masters and bachelors. Hoods are lined in red with a white chevron.

Honorary doctors’ gowns are red in colour and are faced with white velvet. They are worn with red Tudor bonnets. The hood colour signifies the honorary degree: white for Laws; golden yellow for Science; admiralty blue for Letters; purple for Divinity. Hoods are lined in red and white, The University of Winnipeg colours. Fellows wear a gown of blue with nei-ther hat nor hood. Members of the University’s senior administration wear gowns of varying colours. They do not wear hoods.
