SALT AND LIGHT Fr. Jorge A. Román In a village, before there was electricity, there lived a blind man who used to go out at night carrying a lamp which was lit. Someone asked him why he would use it if he could not see anything with or without it. He replied “I carry it not for me to see, but for others to see me.” When I was in third grade, we had a geography test in which there was a question of whether the Earth was a star with its own light. I answered yes and the teacher graded it incorrect. I protested but the teacher insisted that the Earth is not a star with its own light. At that point I argued “then where do you get electricity from? Mars, Venus or which planet?” There are stars that emit their light because they are stars or glowing suns, while there are others who only reflect the sunlight. At night, to the naked eye, it is difficult to distinguish a planet from a star, it requires the help of a powerful telescope to see them with some clarity and come to appreciate some planets in our solar system and catch a glimpse of distant stars that emit their own light. One full moon night I was very impressed to see the amount of light reflected off the snow in such a way that you could see the snowy mountains and all the snow mirrored the light from the moon itself. Christ has told us we are the light of the world, and although we don't shine with own light , we must radiate the Light of Christ. This light that allows us to see clearly the path that leads to true peace and joy. He has said we are the salt of the earth but if the salt becomes insipid, how will it regain the flavor? Because of a stupid provision from the Chief of Public Health, there are no salt shakers in restaurant in Mexico unless the waiter is asked for them. He said that Mexicans will put salt everything even prior to tasting the food. Of course! The most tasteless food tastes better with a little salt. Even Tequila tastes better with salt and lime. Some people are so insipid that nothing excites them. They lack some type of aspiration and they settle for living a routine life, almost vegetal. Others live only complaining about everything. However, some people are like salt shakers, they add flavor and life to everything and spread joy to all. Christians should be like that, radiating the light of Christ and joyous of living the gospel. St. Paul tells us: ¨Rejoice always in the Lord. I repeat: Rejoice always¨. Pope Francisco emphasizes on this joy that Christ gives us in his recent encyclical “Evangeli Gaudium¨(The Joy of the Gospel)”. Therefore, lets shine to the maximum radiating the light and joy of Christ and lets add flavor to life with our enthusiasm, love and faith to spread the joy of living to all.

en el examen de geografía a la pregunta de que si la Tierra era un astro con luz propia, a lo que respondí que sí. Le protesté al Maestro por habérmela calificado como incorrecta y el Profesor insistió que la Tierra no es un astro con luz propia; a lo que le alegué que si entonces la luz eléctrica la conseguía de Marte, Venus o de qué planeta. Hay astros que emiten su luz porque son estrellas o soles incandescentes, en tanto que hay otros que sólo reflejan la luz del Sol. A simple vista, en la noche, es difícil distinguir un planeta de una estrella, se requiere de la ayuda de un potente telescopio para poder verlos con un poco de claridad y llegar a apreciar un poco los planetas de nuestro sistema solar y alcanzar a ver las lejanas estrellas que emiten su propia luz. Una noche de Luna llena me impresionó mucho ver la cantidad de luz que reflejaba sobre la nieve de tal manera que se podían apreciar las montañas nevadas y toda la nieve reflejaba mágicamente la luz que recibía de la misma Luna. Cristo nos ha dicho que somos la luz del Mundo, y aunque no brillamos con luz propia, debemos irradiar la Luz de Cristo. Esta luz que nos permite ver con claridad el camino que conduce a la verdadera paz y alegría. Nos ha dicho que somos la sal de la Tierra y si la sal se vuelve insípida, ¿Con qué se le devolverá el sabor? Por una estúpida disposición del Jefe de Salubridad, en los restaurantes de México no hay saleros a menos que se pidan al mesero. Decía que los Mexicanos le ponemos sal a todo aún antes de probar la comida. ¡Claro! La comida más insípida, cobra sabor con un poco de sal y hasta el Tequila sabe mejor con su sal y su limón. Hay personas que son tan insípidas que no les entusiasma nada, ni tienen ningún tipo de aspiración y que tan solo se conforman con vivir una rutinaria vida, casi vegetal. Otras más sólo viven quejándose de todo. En cambio, hay gente que es un salero que le da sabor y vida a todo y contagia a todos de su alegría. El Cristiano debe ser así. Irradiar la luz de Cristo y la alegría de vivir el Evangelio. Un Cristiano triste es un… Triste Cristiano. San Pablo nos dice: ¨Estad siempre alegres en el Señor. Os lo repito: Estad siempre alegres¨. El Papa Francisco hace énfasis en esta alegría que Cristo nos da en su reciente Encíclica ¨Evangeli Gaudium¨ (La Alegría del Evangelio). Por lo tanto, brillemos al máximo irradiando la luz de alegría de Cristo y démosle sabor a la vida con nuestro entusiasmo, amor y fe para contagiar a todos de esa alegría de vivir.

Why should I feel a responsibility to the Bishop’s Ministry Appeal? The theme for the Bishop’s Ministry Appeal is “Becoming the heart, hands and voice of God.” Some of the ministries that help us do this are Permanent Diaconate (ministers in outreach programs to the poor and celebrates family life through weddings, baptisms and funerals); Youth and Young Adults Ministry (creates connections by offering leadership training), Hispanic Ministry (develops youth and young adult leaders in the Latino community), and many other needed services best provided at the diocesan level. As Catholics, we profess the belief that we are part of One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. This belief extends beyond our parish faith community to include both the diocesan church and the universal church. Diocesan ministries and services reach beyond the scope of any individual parish. While regular gifts to your parish are important, your annual gift to your diocese is equally important.

How does the Bishop’s Ministry Appeal benefit my parish and me? In the Bishop’s Ministry Appeal brochure, there is a list of the programs and services of the Diocese that are funded by the BMA. You and thousands of your fellow parishioners are directly or indirectly served through these diocesan programs and services.

How is the money from the Bishop’s Ministry Appeal allocated? This year’s goal of $2,500,000 provides a large amount of the income required to sustain Diocesan ministries and services. It will cost nearly $3,200,000 to completely fund the ministries. It is important to know that 100% of your contribution goes to the Bishop’s Ministry Appeal and not to any other diocesan expenses. All of the funds raised over your parish goal will remain at your parish.

How do I make my pledge to the Bishop’s Ministry Appeal? You will be asked to complete a pledge envelope at Mass on Appeal Weekend. Just fill out the envelope and place it in the collection basket during the Offertory of the Mass on that weekend. Contributions can also be made by contacting the parish office or the Diocese Development office at 209/546-7646. Online giving is also available at www.stocktondiocese.org.

How much should I pledge? Your Bishop’s Ministry Appeal pledge is part of your Christian stewardship of treasure. All families are asked to consider a sacrificial gift to the appeal. First consider the many ways God has blessed you and your loved ones, then make a generous pledge that says how grateful you are for God’s gifts. Gifts of all sizes are appreciated, but for gifts of $600 or more, you will be included in a special group of dedicated and committed Catholics throughout the Diocese. Morning Star donors ($600 - $999), Day Star donors ($1,000-$1,999), and Evening Star donors ($2,000 and up) will be acknowledged on our Diocesan website.

Why are pledges encouraged, instead of one-time donations? Pledges provide parishioners with the opportunity to increase their sacrificial gifts to the mission of the Church by spreading their donations over an eight-month period.

What payment methods can I use to make my pledge? Pledges are paid by monthly installments over an 8-month period by credit card or direct debit (direct charge) to your checking or savings account. DIA MUNDIAL DEL ENFERMO.- Es el Martes 11 de Febrero. Si tú estás padeciendo alguna enfermedad o conoces a algún enfermo, vengan a la Misa de 6 p.m. ese día a San José para recibir el Sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos. Recuerden que sólo pueden recibirlo quienes son Católicos practicantes. Si conoces a algún enfermo que no puede salir de casa, llama al Padre Jorge para visitarlo.

San Valentín, fue posiblemente un médico romano que se hizo sacerdote y que casaba a los soldados, a pesar de que ello estaba prohibido por el emperador Claudio "El Gótico" que lo consideraba incompatible con la carrera de las armas. El emperador ordenó decapitarlo en el 270.

La festividad se borró del calendario eclesiástico por la Iglesia católica en el año 1969 como parte de un intento por eliminar santos de un origen posiblemente legendario, aunque sigue siendo celebrada localmente por algunas parroquias. LA LEYENDA.- San Valentín era un sacerdote que, hacia el siglo III, ejercía en Roma. Gobernaba el emperador Claudio II, quien decidió prohibir la celebración de matrimonios para los jóvenes, porque en su opinión los solteros sin familia eran mejores soldados, ya que tenían menos ataduras. El sacerdote consideró que el decreto era injusto y desafió al emperador. Celebraba en secreto matrimonios para jóvenes enamorados (de ahí se ha popularizado que San Valentín sea el patrón de los enamorados). El emperador Claudio dio entonces orden de que encarcelasen a Valentín. Entonces, el oficial Asterius, encargado de encarcelarlo, quiso ridiculizar y poner a prueba a Valentín. Lo retó a que devolviese la vista a una hija suya, llamada Julia, que nació ciega. Valentín aceptó y, en nombre del Señor, le devolvió la vista. Este hecho convulsionó a Asterius y su familia, quienes se convirtieron al cristianismo. De todas formas, Valentín siguió preso y el débil emperador Claudio finalmente ordenó que lo martirizaran y ejecutaran el 14 de febrero del año 270. La joven Julia, agradecida al santo, plantó un almendro de flores rosadas junto a su tumba. De ahí que el almendro sea símbolo de amor y amistad duraderos.

WORLD DAY OF THE SICK.- Tuesday, February 11. If you are seriously sick or if you know anyone who is sick and able to come to the Church, come that day for the Mass at 6 p.m. to receive the Sacrament of the Anointment of Sick. Remember that the receiver of this Sacrament should be a practicing Catholic. If you know any sick who is not able to leave home, please call Fr. Jorge to visit that person.

Saint Valentine, officially known as Saint Valentine of Rome, is a third-century Roman saint widely celebrated on February 14 and commonly associated with "courtly love." Although not much of St. Valentine's life is reliably known, and whether or not the stories involve two different saints by the same name is also not officially decided, it is highly agreed that St. Valentine was martyred and then buried on the Via Flaminia to the north of Rome. In 1969, the Roman Catholic Church removed St. Valentine from the General Roman Calendar, because so little is known about him. However, the church still recognizes him as a saint, listing him in the February 14 spot of Roman Martyrolgy. The story tells that St. Valentine was imprisoned for marrying Christian couples and aiding Christians being persecuted by Claudius in Rome. Both acts were considered serious crimes. A relationship between the saint and emperor began to grow, until Valentine attempted to convince Claudius of Christianity. Claudius became raged and sentenced Valentine to death, commanding him to renounce his faith or be beaten with clubs and beheaded. St. Valentine refused to renounce his faith and Christianity and was executed outside the Flaminian Gate on February 14, 269. However, other tales of St. Valentine's life claim he was executed either in the year 269, 270, 273 or 280. Other depictions of St. Valentine's arrests tell that he secretly married couples so husbands wouldn't have to go to war. Another variation of the legend of St. Valentine says he refused to sacrifice to pagan gods, was imprisoned and while imprisoned he healed the jailer's blind daughter.
