The San Manuel Elks are especially thankful to Joana Cano (NJHS), Tamara Cano, Olivia Ortega and Lindsy Shupman (Interact) for

volunteering to help bus tables and do dishes as part of their Community Service requirements

for school at the annual Thanksgiving celebration. These girls worked very hard

and we greatly appreciated their help as well helping them with their requirements. We also want to thank our Members, Members’ wives, a widow Member and a Member's granddaughter who volunteered their time to help with set up, cooking, serving and clean up. We had six out of town guests from other Elks Lodges around

the state who came to help serve. In all we served approximately 300 people and no one went away hungry. This dinner is funded by

donations entirely by Elks Members and those in the community and we appreciate all of their

support in order to make this event possible each year. Our door prize winners were Jan Kincaid, Cheri Pierson and Al Romero. We still need Cheri and Al to stop by the Lodge

after 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday to claim their prize.

ORACLE FIREWISESpecial to San Manuel Miner

From a Firewise perspective, there are tips we can implement in our homes to reduce the risk of fires during this

time of year. The National Fire Protection Association has listed some great reminders on their website, NFPA.org/education. They include the following:Holiday Decorating• Be careful with holiday decorations. Choose decorations that are flame resistant.• Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn. Blow them out before you leave the room or go to bed.• Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.• Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections.• Use clips, not nails to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged.• Keep decorations away from windows

Firewise Tips for the Holiday Home

and doors.Holiday Entertaining• Test your smoke alarms.• Keep children and pets away from lit candles.• Keep matches and lighters up high in a locked cabinet.• Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stove top.Selecting the Tree• Choose one that is fresh and green and the needles do not fall off when touched.• Keep the tree at least 3 feet away from any heat source.• Do not let it block an exit.• Water it daily. • Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.• Do not use lights with worn or broken cords.• Always turn off the Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. By implementing these tips, your home and family will have reduced the risk of having a fire start in your home.

HEALTH ISSUESBy Dr. Michael Miles

Special to the Miner

Acne rosacea is a relatively common skin disorder in which the nose and cheeks become abnormally red from

enlarged blood vessels. Burning and stinging sensations are often associated with enlarged blood vessels of these types. The areas affected by rosacea may be covered with pimples as seen in standard acne, although white heads and black heads are not common. The symptoms may appear and disappear several times before they settle into some permanence as the blood vessels remain enlarged. Its highest prevalence is in adults with light skin between the ages of 30 and 50, affecting approximately 14 million people in the U. S. and 45 million world wide. W. C. Fields exhibited the signs of rosacea on his nose and in his cheeks. Many factors have been suspected of caus-ing acne rosacea: alcoholism, menopausal flushing, local infection, B vitamin deficien-cies, overuse of steroid creams and gastroin-testinal disorders. A main focus in the treatment of rosacea revolves around the digestive system. A starting point for treatment is to enhance the secretions of the pancreas and the stomach. Gastric analysis of rosacea patients has led to the suggestion that rosacea may result from reduced hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Stress is a key reason for lowered stomach acid. When a person goes into a stressed condition, the body shuts down many non-

essential processes. This conserves the body’s resources and allows it to channel extra energy into areas that will help it survive a perceived crisis. Digestion of food is not something that is critical during the typical 20 to 30 minute crisis that the body’s stress response is geared for, though many a crisis response can last for years. The body shuts off the digestive juices during this time, including the stomach acid. Supplementing each meal with digestive enzymes, including the addition of hydro-chloric acid, can markedly improve rosacea. Other research suggests the involvement of a skin mite named Demodex folliculo-rum. One of the B vitamins, riboflavin, may provide resistance to this mite. Therefore, it is recommended to supplement with a good B-complex vitamin. Some foods are associated with flushing in the face. Among those to avoid are cof-fee, alcohol, hot beverages, spicy foods and any other food or drink that causes a flush. Refined or otherwise concentrated sugars can feed this condition. Foods that contain trans-fatty acids, such as milk, milk products, margarine, shortening or other synthetically hydrogenated vegetable oils, and fried foods contribute to an imbalance of facial oils that can lead to rosacea. Basic facial hygiene can help calm some of the symptoms of rosacea. Washing gently with warm water and mild soap, followed by a cold rinse may keep inflamed pores clean

and free of bacteria. Protection from direct sun contact can help reduce flare-ups as well. Rosacea sometimes resolves on its own after several years. However, years of enduring these symptoms can wear on a person. In-corporating the suggestions mentioned above may help resolve or ease the symptoms and make for a more comfortable life.Dr. Michael Miles’ Clinic is located at 15601 N. The Smith kids, Zahira, Salma, Aaliyah (front) and Elmer (back) were the first to mail their letters to Santa Claus.Jennifer Carnes | Miner

San Manuel’s Smith family first to mail letters to Santa

The four Smith children, ranging in age from 2-13, were the first to mail their holiday wishes to Santa Claus. The youngest, Salma (2 years old) told Santa that she’d like “A baby doll and Mine Mouse doll. Moana doll and Moana book. Mickey Mouse club house toy, Dora dress, Dora chancla, Moana piggy doll.” She also drew Santa a picture. Zahira, who is 5 years old, wrote: “Dear Santa I have bin good. For Christmas I want a squishy donyt, batman dol bat man legos and notebooks and a playte dat mall hoodie.” Aaliyah, who is 9 years old, also drew Santa a picture. She writes, “Dear Santa what I want for Christmas is a laptop, healboot, kids makeup, squishy ponsies, lego Cinderella, cheer skirt and shirt, Barbie doll, and to die my hair. How have you been? I have been good. What kind of cookies do you want? How is Miss Claus. Love, Aaliyah.” Elmer, the oldest, writes: “Dear Santa, For Christmas I would like a Iphone 6, I would also like an Xbox one, if you can’t get phone. I would also like 1 year gold for Xbox one or 260. I would also like the game destiny and double A batterys. I have also good because there are more good day’s than bad, but I tink I’v been good. From Elmer.” Tri-Community children can mail their wishes to Santa in the special mailboxes placed around the area: La Casita in Mammoth; San Manuel Library; and the Oracle Fire Station. Letters can also be placed through the slot in the door at the Miner office in San Manuel. Santa has also set up a special email address if you want to send your wishes to him electronically. The email address is [email protected]. This year, Mr. Claus has given us permission to accept letters through our Facebook page (www.Facebook.com/CopperArea). Just send us a message (PM) with your child’s letter to Santa. Please be sure to include the town where you live so we can publish it in the right newspaper. Hurry and get your letters in quickly so they can be forwarded to the North Pole in plenty of time for the big day. The deadline to mail letters in Santa’s special mailbox is Dec. 14. Santa needs time to get all the requests fulfilled. Letters will be published on Dec. 19.

Enjoy the artwork of three local but world-renowned artists and art instructors, Pat Dolan, Danielle Neibling and Lewis Schnellmann. All three artists have also taught community art classes at OrCA. The exhibit will run from Dec. 1 through Jan. 20 at the Oracle Center for the Arts, 700 E. Kingston St., Oracle. The opening is set for Sunday, Dec. 9, from 1-4 p.m.Pat Dolan My job as an artist is to give a voice to the voiceless endangered animals, birds and their habitats. These concerns are expressed by my choices of animals that I portray with which I feel a soul bond. When I draw these animals, I experience such a strong connection with them that it is as if their essence was coming out through my hands. This is expressed in the energy of my ‘mark making and surface veils of color’. My works are visual prayers, asking the viewer to see these animals and to remember that once humanity felt a connection to all life and lived in a way that sustained all creatures. If we remember these connections, we can create a future for all of us. www.patdolan.net

Danielle Neibling Through the creative process and artistic experimentation, I enjoy feeling an affinity to whomever or whatever I paint. I feel just as integrated in the realm of morphing abstraction, which is alive to me, always visually active- open to interpretation. Being up close to view, like a child or a pet, right on the floor or the ground is where I want the viewer to explore the spaces that are there in my work. To find space between shapes is to look intently and is the most interesting and joyful process of all. [email protected] Schnellmann My paintings are about the “Place”. Location is the subject matter that is the inspiration to create the artwork. It may be the color of the light or the colors of shapes of the shadows being cast or the shimmer of the reflections in water. I use my skills in the handling of the medium, to present to the viewer what I believe is the ultimate aspect of the beautiful. I hope to transmit some similarity of my sensations, which I experience about the “place”, to the viewer through the artwork. [email protected]

IMX winners are, from left, Evan Apuron, Darien Apuron, AJ Lopez and Riley Stewart. Jeanine Apuron | Submitted

USA Swimming held the IM Xtreme Games in Mesa, Arizona at the Kino Aquatic Center Nov. 16-18. To qualify, swimmers in the Western Region of the USA (10 States from New Mexico to Alaska) had to achieve an IMX score of 1500 points or more in the preceding 18 months. An IMX score is obtained when a swimmer swims each of the IMX events. The events include a 200 of each stroke (Butterfly, Backstroke and Breaststroke), the 200 Individual Medley (IM), the 400 IM, and the 500 Freestyle. A score is assigned based on the time for each event and age of the swimmer. The scores from each event are then added together to obtain the IMX Score (similar to the Decathlon in Track). It is a big achievement to complete all the IMX events and a momentous

achievement for any swimmer who earns an IMX score of 1500 and qualifies for the IMX Meet. Six Sea Lions swimmers qualified for the meet but due to illness, only four competed. All four of the Sea Lions swimmers achieved top 16 overall finishes in their respective ages and were awarded plaques. AJ Lopez finished in 15th place in the 15 year old Boys Division. Swimming in his second IMX Meet, he showed some real grit in completing all the events even though he was not feeling his best. AJ achieved a score of 2181 and moved up one place from his 16th place finish in 2017. Darien Apuron finished in 6th place with a score of 2161 in the 17 year old Girls Division. Swimming in her fifth IMX meet, this was the third time

Are you ready for “Sweater Weather?” There are only three days until the Electric Light Parade Saturday, Dec. 1. Are your lights in working order and are the batteries charged? The parade line up is at the area by the Teen Center with smaller floats lining up in front of Kearny Town Hall and larger floats will line up on Jamestown starting at 5 p.m. with the parade starting at 6 and ending at the GKI. Since it is dark at 5 p.m. it is hard to have to write last minute notes for the MC, therefore it is important to have a legible script ready at parade lineup. Uptown on Alden there will be vendors with their homemade items which make great gifts. There is no charge for the parade entries nor for the vendors. Just let Ginger know at the Chamber office for vendor space. Alden Rd. will be closed until 10 p.m. between the Bank and Ace Hardware as soon as the parade ends so the children will be safe as they rush to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce has many family friendly activities planned for Saturday night. The Kearny Police and Fire will host a family friendly holiday movie in the Kearny Fire Station. There will also be a

Electric light parade, winter festival Saturday in Kearny; Tri-Community invited

jumping castle and a fire pit so kids (and grownups) can roast marshmallows. There will also be a gingerbread house decorating contest and other family friendly fun

stuff. So dig out those sweaters (ugly or otherwise) and get into the spirit of the holidays.

Darien finished in the top 16 and her 6th place finish matched her 2016 results. Riley Stewart finished in 2nd Place in the 14 year old Boys Division. Riley finished with 4175 points. He had a great weekend of swimming and achieved personal best times in five out the six events. His 200 IM was his highest scoring event. His time of 2:01.54 in the 200 IM earned him 747 points as he finished 2nd in the event. In his fifth year competing at the IMX Meet, and the defending Champion from 2017, Riley put in some outstanding races, but came up just short of repeating as Champion. Evan Apuron finished in 2nd place in the 15 year old Boys Division. Evan finished with 4105 points achieving best times in four out of the six events. Evan won both the 200 Breaststroke (2:12.92

– 754 points) and 200 Butterfly (1:56.86 – 765 points). Evan’s 2nd place finish matched his 2nd place finish from last year. Coach Alex Gort was proud of the results. “Most of the team was battling a cold, so none were 100% healthy entering this meet,” Gort told the Miner. “The outstanding effort and determination each one showed to complete in this very tough meet made me proud.” The Sea Lions Swim Team practices in Oro Valley during November – March while the water is too cold to hold practice in Mammoth. Anyone interested in more information on the Sea Lions can contact Alex Gort (896-2190) or check the team website, sealionsswimteam.com.
