THE MUCK AND MIRE

I had all intentions to write about the

many inequities in the world and how

most of us are stuck in one mess or

another. But on second thought, I thought

it better to focus on the positive aspects

and the possibilities the future may hold, and besides, who needs more depression?

For me, I’ve been blessed with five

wonderful children and two grand -

children who are presently trying the best

they can to navigate through the

quagmire the government has created (by

funding what appears to some people as

an unwinnable war). They believe that

Presidents Obama’s decision to send

30,000 more troops into combat is a roll

of the dice at best, so it will take great

effort and sacrifice on everyone’s part to

support it. But support it we must.

❖ ❖ ❖

LIFE HAS BECOME

 A JUGGLING ACT

No matter who you speak to, every

aspect of today’s life involves constantly

making changes. There is no ordinary day

in anyone’s life anymore. You either come

to the reality that the status quo is a thing

of the past, or you’re left in the dust.

When the music business started to

tank badly about ten years

ago, I knew that changes

would be needed in my life

in order to survive. Most of

my life was spent perform-

ing on the piano in hotels

and nightclubs. Could I

ever envision that publish -

ing a magazine would be in

my future? In 2001, when

the idea of starting a newsletter came

light, I scoffed at the idea, until the mu

business began getting worse by t

minute. After much pondering, I beg

with a newsletter in 2002. After three ye

Everybody has a story, a very unique story, to tell

about his or her life, or about significant events in that

person’s life. This is your opportunity to hear — and to

preserve forever — that story as told by someone very

special to you. In the comfort of our recording studio, you

will make a professionally-produced CD of your interviewwith that special someone. What will the interview be

like? You might ask, for example, about the most

memorable moments in the that person’s life, or delve

into the lasting lessons that he or she has learned, or seek

words of wisdom to be passed on to you. Or maybe you’ll

want to spend this face-to-face time telling that special

person things you’ve always wanted to say about what

he or she means to you. In any case, the choice of topics

is yours and you’ll have a lasting reminder of this very

personal and meaningful experience.

Have you thought of converting a traditional IRA to aRoth IRA? If so, this may be your year.

Roth IRA earnings can grow tax free if you’ve had youraccount at least five years and you postpone withdrawalsuntil you’re at least 59-1/2. Furthermore, a Roth IRA, unlikea traditional IRA, doesn’t require you to take distributions

when you reach 70-1/2.Previously, you faced strict income and filing-status

limits before converting a traditional IRA to a Roth IRABut in 2010, you can convert funds to a Roth IRA even if

your modified adjusted gross income is over $100,000 and you are married and file separate tax returns.

Plus, if you convert in 2010, you can spread the taxesdue on conversion over two years.

Consult with your tax advisor before converting to aRoth IRA. If appropriate for your situation, this conversioncan be a smart move.

AS I WAS SAYING

24 Lighthouse Point Magazine  www.lhpmag.com

Resolutions 2010 By Alan Williamson

It’s a brand new year, a time of hope and growth and

shaking free of the limitations of the past. It’s a time of

renewal and redemption and salvation. But most of all, it’s

a time to make a series of New Year’s resolutions that I’ll

spend the next 365 days treating like a to-do list created by

someone who doesn’t know me very well and has NO

RIGHT to tell me how to live my life.

Here, in no particular order and subject to change

without notice, are my resolutions for 2010.

Resolution #1: I will use the power of social media to

unite, enlighten and inspire people in search of greater

meaning and purpose in life. I will also provide timely

updates on when I’m getting my car washed, buying

yogurt, growing a goatee, or thinking of throwing out old

running shoes.

Resolution #2: I will expand my horizons by traveling

more and spending time abroad. (Let the record show that

I’ve never been abroad, but I have used my wife’s body

lotion when we’ve run out of soap.)

Resolution #3: I will stop judging people harshly and givethem the benefit of the doubt. Like the dirt bag that

tailgated me at high speed the other day on I-95 risking

innocent lives so that he could arrive five minutes early at

Bucky’s Belly Up Bar and complain to his loser buddies

about how miserable his life is in spite of his towering

intellect and George Clooney-ish charm. (There. I’ve gotten

it out of my system.)

Resolution #4: I will think big thoughts, but relish small

pleasures. Big Thought: I must build a body of work that

will reach across time and space and enrich people’s

lives long after I’m gone. Small pleasure: Mmmm, sweet

potato fries.

Resolution #5: Knowing that, on average, women utter

7,000 words a day and men manage just over 2,000, I will

do my part to close the gap by expanding everything I say

to include the additional phrase “It is what it is.”

Resolution #6: I will break out of my comfort zone and

on a cattle drive where I’ll learn to ride a horse over lo

distances, develop close, mutually-supportive relationshi

with fellow cowhands, cook semi-edible slop over an op

campfire, sleep on the hard ground in snake and coyo

ridden terrain, and use the experience as a springboard

live my life with a greater self-confidence a

resourcefulness than ever before. (NOTE: If continu

economic hardships preclude an adventure of th

magnitude, I will scale back and break out of my comfo

zone by running towards a gaggle of geese at a park a

shouting “fight or f light,” “fight or f light,” and then, as th

fly away in terror, yell after them, “yeah, that’s wha

thought ladies.”

Resolution #7: I will pick a hairstyle that works for m

and stick with it over the long term. This will end my li

long experimentation with hair styles that resulted in m

hitting bottom last year when I was mistaken for A

Garfunkel at a family reunion. (It changed me.)

Resolution #8: I will approach both love and cooki with the same reckless abandon but will cut costs on bo

fronts by buying off-brand syrups and dipping oils.

Resolution #9: I will strive to live my life according to t

three Rs: Respect for self; Respect for others; Random a

of kindness carried out Regularly. (Okay, that may actua

be a total of four Rs, so I’ll shoot for all of them a

consider three out of four a successful campaign.)

Happy New Year everyone! Give it your best. Cou

your blessings. Don’t sweat the small stuff. And rememb

that the main thing is to always keep the main thing tmain thing. Which reminds me of one final pledge:

Resolution #10:  When my attempts to sound ph

sophically advanced result in pretentious babble abo

“keeping the main thing the main thing,” I will wisely sh

up. (Hey, it is what it is.)

Congratulations to Diane and Robert Foote of 2421 NE 34th Court, winners of the Lighthouse Point Community’s

Beauty Spot of the Month Award for December, chosen by the LHP Beautification Committee.

 Beauty Spot of the Month

Round-up, Killz-all, Finale. It sounds like a war going on inthe garden. However, these words are actually being used tomarket weed killers! Products like these have been used for years,

with questionable safety. They kill weeds by entering their systems and/or killing them topically. In either case, thesechemicals enter the soil, and eventually our water supply, either via the groundwater, or tributaries, lakes, ponds, and theocean via run-off. Unfortunately, our climate is so mild, and therains so plentiful, that most of the time, weeds can run rampant,if not controlled.

If you’ve been reading my column for a while, then you know Iam a strong advocate of using ground cover plants to cover bare

areas. That’s because the key is to block the sunlight which weedseeds need to sprout, and to force them to compete for water andnutrients using bigger and stronger plants already established, leading to their demise. This is the best and easiest way to control

weeds. Mulch is useful, but breaks down rather quickly, forming acozy and perfect seed bed for weeds. I once read that mulch is the“underwear” of the garden, and shouldn’t really be seen. I whole -heartedly agree with that. Nature abhors a vacuum, and an empty space will likely be filled with something, unless you do it first.

Simply plant the things you want to see growing there, and letthem do the policing for you. There are literally dozens, if not

hundreds of plants thatcould be used as aliving mulch; anythingfrom ground level up totwo feet could beuseful; and don’t forgetto use shrubs aroundtrees to help protectthem from the deadly string trimmers. So, the living mulch for Gumbo Limbo tree could essentially be a Firebush. The mulchfor a Firebush could be a Coontie, etc.

However, if you still need a product to kill the little rascals

there is a product out called  Avenger   which is made fromorange oil. Avenger kills quite thoroughly, is pleasant smelling andcauses no harm to you or the environment. You can also trystraight white vinegar, which is 5% acetic acid, and will work onsmaller seedlings.

Now, if after all this careful planning, you still find that youhave more weeds than you are comfortable with, then try to handpull them, especially before they start to f lower and set seed fothe future generation of weeds. This will make a big impaceventually, and is quite therapeutic; like voting—you get to decide

 who to keep.

Ashley has been going to Bit-By-Bit since she was six. She

tremendously. Ashley was born with tor ticolis and started therap

at ten months old. She also had developmental delays, low mus

Ashley has a very severe ADHD in the Autism spectrum, and a

Ashley had worked with both Susan Kathy Debbie Renee, no

Country Music is what Ashley loves best. Ashley also loves

horse shows, and has been receiving ribbons since age six, an

very proud of her trophies. This has given her a wonderful se

of accomplishment, and her balance is now much better. She e

sometimes can ride independently.

Ashley hopes that one day she will own a horse of her own,

It took a couple of  weeks to convince him to

give it a try. One ride andhe was hooked. Max can’tget enough of the horses, and rides three times a  week, and would rideeveryday if he could. He

looks forward to each lesson, and loves special events like The Halloween Horse Show.

Max has come a long way in ten years. He’s transitioned into anindependent rider and pushes himself to become better and better  with each lesson. The relationship he shares with the horses, Kathy,Susan, and the volunteers is truly magic.

It’s hard to put into words the positive impact Bit-By-Bit hasmade in my son’s life. Special thanks to Max’s guardian angels,

Kathy and Susan. You guys are the best!!! Pam Stitzer

Tracy was studyingabroad in Florence, Italy,as an exchange studentfrom the University of Miami, when her life

was radically changed. She was just beginningthe second semester of her junior year abroad, living her dream of learning first hand thehistory of her Italian

ancestors and travelingthrough Europe. Her parents were living near Naples, where her Dad

was the CommandingOfficer of the US NavalHospital.

Tiffany, Tracy’s older sister, quit her job to

join Tracy for her lastsemester of traveling. Both girls were with friends waiting for another to join them for dinner, when an out-of-control car

jumped the sidewalk and hit them.

Tracy was knocked down, sustaining a broken ankle and somelacerations, although she never lost consciousness. She soonunderwent surgery to repair her broken ankle and suffered ananoxic brain injury from too much narcotics and not enough oxygen post-operatively, resulting in cardiac arrest. Tracy remainedin a coma for two and a half months, and to this day (nearly seven

years later) is unable to speak, eat, or move on her own.Hippotherapy, at Bit-By-Bit, has given Tracy back some control

of her life. She has been riding now for nearly three years, andthere have tremendous gains in her trunk and head control. Whenshe started hippotherapy, Tracy needed several pillows to help

with trunk stability. Now, when Tracy rides Gypsy, she sits up tall

and proud, needing only a light touch from her “sidewalkers.”Horses are such gentle, healing, magical animals, providing the

feeling of walking for those who are unable to stand or ambulate. For Tracy, Hippotherapy brings a little normalcy to a life that hasbeen anything but normal. When she is riding Gypsy, she appearsto be on top of the world!

The emotional support and unconditional love sharedbetween Tracy and Gypsy are beyond words! It is a blessing tohave Bit-By-Bit Therapy, Inc., right in our own backyard, at Sandand Spurs in Pompano!

Ryan has ADHD with occupational and speech delays with balance issues. He started riding last June  when he was six. We  would have started himsooner, but can you believe

not all insurances pay for this wonderful therapy?

Ryan loves going to

horses. He runs up to meethis horse walkers andtrainer every week. It is

 very safe and there is usually a trainer and two horse walkers(volunteers) at all times. It's really interesting to watch;

sometimes they make him turn around while riding, sometimeshe rides bareback or with his hands in the air. This way the kidsget there therapy while having fun.

Since riding, his balance has somewhat improved, hisconfidence and fear of heights has really improved and he is notas fearful of animals. At Bit By Bit they know what they are doingand make the kids therapy fun! He was absolutely thrilled to geta Trophy and Ribbon and to ride a horse dressed as Elvis at the

Halloween Horse Show! How fun!I really believe in Bit-by-Bit, it is a fantastic children’s therapy

program. They are helping so many of our children every day!I feel so lucky to have my children involved in this program andam so grateful to all the “human” and “horse” therapists who havehelped my children.

One of the biggest surprises is that he has always beextremely soft spoken. His speech therapist has been tryingraise his speech volume, but it was a slow process. But since

It is my goal to expose my son to every therapy available  which will give him the

best chance to overcomehis disorder. My son, PhilipThomas Valenti, was diag-nosed with Autism SpectrumDisorder when he was two-

and-a-half-years-old after anevaluation by BrowardCounty’s Early Steps Program.Immediately, Early Stepsassisted me in placing Philipin necessary therapies. Philipis non-verbal and runningabout a one-and-a-half years

behind his peers. The Early Steps Program was instru-mental in getting Philip intothe developmental preschoolat the Anne Storck Center

which gave Philip a foundation to build upon. On a weekly basisPhilip attends speech, occupational and physical therapy sessions which are not enough by themselves. At home we

integrate as much of his daily therapies as possible and continueto build upon the foundation that the therapists have built.

I heard of a book written by a father with an autistic son who wrote about his experience with horses and how his son

broke out of his autistic world to be exposed to hisurroundings. His son actually gained speech, social skills anbecame toilet trained. Growing up in the country and bein

exposed to horses, I know that horses are very special.  wanted Philip to experience the freedom of riding and prayedhis world would open around him. Philip started Bit-By-Bit athe end of September and within the first week of riding“Sheba” Philip said two new words. I noticed after riding h

is calmer and focused. Philip does not like hats nothing canbe on his head or around his ears. After three weeks of horstherapy, Philip no longer fusses about putting on his helmeor having it fastened. Philip turned three years old in Octobeabout one month after starting horse therapy. We have noticedmany changes in Philip’s behavior, cognitive abilities, and hiposture. Philip has become courteous about his environmenfocuses more, makes more eye contact, increased hi

vocabulary (he now says horse.), plays with his toys properlyinitiates games such as peek-a-boo or chase, and he has gainedupper and lower body strength. Bit-By-Bit has become aintricate part of his development. Philip looks forward toevery Sunday morning when we turn down the road that leadto the stables. HOW TO AVOID OVERPRICING YOUR HOME

• Resist the temptation to list your home high.Be wary of a listing price that sounds too good, and exceeds what the comparables reflect. On Tuesday, November 10th, the Broward Sherriff ’s Office

presented my family with a Life Saving Award and the City of

Pompano Beach presented us with a proclamation related to

the following story. It was very humbling to have received

these awards.

On Sunday August 23rd, my husband Larry, my 8-year-old son,

Glenn, and I were out in our 15' Whaler off the beach near theballs north of Commercial Pier. We had stopped and weregetting ready to get into the water when we heard screaming.  We saw people in the water waving their arms and a boat

running right along the balls where there are divers.Larry looked over and said “oh my god; there’s no one driving

that boat.” My husband was very quick-thinking and immediately floored our boat in pursuit of the 23' Shearwater. We werehaving a hard time trying to catch up. Our first thought was toget in front of the boat and warn people to get out of the way. We were screaming and yelling as we came up from behind, butbefore we could get close enough the 23' Shearwater ran right

in between four divers in the water who were on the surface

missing them by less than three feet. My heart was in my stomach because I thought for sure that the boat was going to hitand kill or injure one of them.

We were still in high pursuit of the runaway boat but werealized that there wasn’t enough time to get in front of the boatand warn people and it was aiming straight for three boats allanchored on the balls with divers in the water. With less than 30

seconds from the runaway Shearwater colliding with theanchored boats and divers we knew we had to do some thing. The only choice was to try and jump in the boat and stop it. Weknew we had to risk our lives to save others.

My husband drove up next to the Shearwater still maintainingabout 35 mph and we were bouncing all over the place from

the waves. The only communication between us was he said“you’re going to have to jump” and I said “I know.” Fortunately,

Larry is an exceptional boat driver and I trust him implicitly. As soon as I saw the boats get about one inch apart, I jumped

with all my might out of our Whaler into the Shearwater, justtrying to make sure I cleared the side of the Shearwater anddidn’t fall in between the two boats. I immediately stood up andgrabbed the throttle pulling it out of gear into neutral. I stoodthere shaking for about 15 seconds. First I looked to make surenothing was wrong with the controls because we didn’t

understand how this happened.

Everything was working correctly on the boat so I begadriving the boat back to where we had first seen the peop

screaming in the water. We were now just south of thPompano pier so I drove it back about three-quarters of a mito where we started.

A nearby dive boat, the Coral Princess, had picked up the foupeople and called the authorities on Channel 16 to report th

runaway vessel. When all the authorities arrived we turned th vessel over to them. I don’t want to speak for the four teenaboys on board the Shearwater that day, but what I was told fromthe authorities is that they were playing a game and everyon

jumped off the boat while it was running leaving no driver. reminds me of the old mother’s saying, “If all your friends jumoff a bridge are you going to do it too?”

For our part, I feel fortunate that we were in the right placat the right time. I don’t know of any other boat out there oththan us that was in a position to try and help. The boats that sathe Shearwater coming towards them had no idea that there wno one driving it and that their lives were in danger. Second

we were ready, willing, and able. It took my husband’s quic

response, and my willingness to jump in order to accomplisthis feat. Not every boater out there would know what to drespond so quickly, or be willing to do it. Nor should theattempt it. We feel very proud to have saved lives that day.

As for the four teenage boys, if someone had been killed injured they could have gone to jail on manslaughter chargeand they and their parents could have been sued for millions

dollars. That would be a terrible price to pay for an accident.

ristina Manole Sujoy, her blonde hair pulled back, dressed in

beige slacks and blouse with minimum make up, showed me

around her sun-drenched Lighthouse Point home that housed a

 wide array of her paintings.

Russian antique icons adorned one side of the wall and

several paintings and unfinished works were randomly arranged

on the dining table, giving the place the feel of an artist’s studio,

but within the confines of a delightful, well-appointed home.

As we walked into her well-lit living room that faced a canal,

the first thing I observed was an impressive French antique

tapestry hanging on the wall to the right. On the far wall was a

large oil painting of a group of musicians, painted in a pop-art

style that I later learned was a street scene in Buenos Aires.

With a European accent that had a musical quality to it,

Cristina spoke freely about her family, her life in South America,

and her thoughts about art and her inspirations. “You like what

comes easier to you,” Cristina said, her brown eyes deep in

thought. “I don’t really love landscapes…what I like is people.

I like the gestures, I like to capture the personality, the ey

the hands.”

In her painting, “Awake on Christmas Night,” she depic

her granddaughter, seated on a tan colored couch, holding t

dolls, looking tired and sleepy. The look of fatigue in the chi

eyes was perfectly captured in this work. Her colors are wa

the strokes, free and sweeping. The warm yellow hue canseen in the doll’s hat, socks and ribbon as well as the girl’s h

to the French tennis player, Mary Pierce,

Cristina depicted her daughter staring off into

the distance with her half-open, thoughtful

eyes. There’s a casual simplicity in this work in

the way her wavy locks fall lazily to one side.

Cristina finds her inspiration in simple

things. “My grandson was at the beach and I

suddenly saw something that spoke to me.”

He was fascinated by a sea gull and began

crawling after it. Cristina captured this

moment in a photograph and from thephotograph created the delightful oil painting

called “Tag.” The perspective is taken from the

back of the child, crawling on a beach. The

footprints, or rather knee prints of the child

are shown in the sand. The color of his blue

outfit is repeated in the blue of the ocean. The

mood is calm, yet playful and there’s an

understated charm that permeates this work.

Cristina’s still-life works appear realistic at

first glance but there is a modern quality to

them. “Still life is like hinges in my art.” She has

done a number of still lifes and always comes

back to them when she needs a subject. In her early years of artistic development,

Cristina studied under a famous portrait artist

in Peru. She worked mainly in charcoal and

pastel and created numerous still- life works.

In her “Pitcher with Fruit,” Cristina painted

what she saw and not what it’s “supposed to

look like.” The reflection of the fruit placed in

the front of the pitcher is shown, as well as the

reflection of a window on the pitcher. We

don’t see the window in the painting but we

can imagine that there is a window in the

distance that is bringing in the light.

MORTGAGE NEWS

The WHBA 2009 was signed by Presi -dent Obama on November 6, 2009. This is

good news. However, we are now left with three different versionsof the increasingly popular tax credit which can be a little confusing. The version that applies depends on the date the buyer bought thehome. A basic overview of the three is as follows:

The initial First Home Buyer Tax Credit required a REFUNDABLEcredit up to $7,500 that is required to be paid back to the governmentin installments over 15 years. It is required to be paid back earlier if

your home was sold earlier or if I was not used as your primary residence. This credit applied to purchases that were made beforeDecember 31, 2008

The first revision which applies to qualifying First Time purchasesafter 2008 and before November 7, 2009 expanded the initial Act by:1) increasing the maximum credit from $7,500 to $8,000 (not to exceed10% of the homes purchase price) 2) eliminated the 15 year payback

requirement. 3) Required the recapture of the credit when the housesold or if it was not your principal residence, if the sale or change in useoccurred within 36 months of the date of purchase.

This latest revision, for purchases after November 6, 2009, has beenexpanded to include the following: 1) Extended Deadline —  Theprevious sunset date of November 30, 2009 has been extended toqualifying, binding home purchase contracts entered into by April 30,2010, as long as the contract is closed no later than June 30, 2010. 2)Increased Income Phase-Out Thresholds — The credit phases outas your modified adjusted gross income increases from $225,000 to

$245,000 (previously $150k to $170k) on a joint return and $125,0to $145,000 (previously $75k to $95k) if you are single or filin

separate return. 3) Qualifying Long-Term Homeowners NQualify  — In addition to qualifying first time homebuyhomeowners who have owned and used the same principal residenfor any five consecutive year period during the eight year perimmediately preceding the purchase will also qualify for the creditto $6,500, 4) Relief for Certain Military and GovernmePersonnel — Military and certain Government personnel who arequalified extended assignments will receive extended deadlinespurchase a home and relief from the recapture rules. Restrictions hbeen added that: 1) limit the purchase price of the property$800,000, 2) limit the purchaser’s age to at least 18 years old, and,

Anyone that is eligible to be claimed as another taxpayers depend will not qualify.

Hopefully, these enhancements to the Act will stimulate even m

activity in the Real Estate Market than did the initial Tax Credits. At lethe positive direction gives those of us in the industry more positive neIf your situation requires more extensive explanation of

The Worker, Home Ownership, and Business Assistance Act of 2009 (WHBA 2009) By Karen Hammett

At the beginning of each New Year, weare reminded by fitness clubs and health magazines that we have a fresh oppor -

tunity to be more balanced in our lives by setting personal, family, andrelationship goals. Ads and articles get us excited about doing this by offering new gadgets and storage boxes to make our homes moreefficient and less cluttered, new recipes so we can enjoy healthy cooking at home more often, parenting and relationship tips so we may strengthen our ties with the people we love, and ways to get energized

so we can do all these things! While we strive for the perfect balance in our lives, we also know

that it is easier said than done. In fact, this time of year can be the moststressful to marriages and families due to our current economic times, unemployment, and financial problems. This often leads to many couples separating or filing a family court action once the holidays haveended and children have returned to school.

Author Mare Peters provides a “Keep it Simple Sweetie” list that istruly simple enough to help get anyone started on the road to a morebalanced life and stronger family. Ms. Peters says: “Are you feeling justa bit blue? Perhaps it’s time to take a look at all you do and make aresolution to simply care more for you.” Here are a few of her bestsuggestions that can help keep balance and ward off family problems:

1. Put on your own oxygen mask first. Every airline provides the sainstruction before each flight that in the event of emergenrequiring use of an oxygen mask, you should not assist anyone arou

you until your own mask is securely in place. In other words, to tbetter care of those around us, we need to make sure we take carourselves first. Figure out how much sleep you really need each nand then make sure you get it; eat more protein and less sugar, buahead and splurge once in a while on that chocolate treat; andsomething a few times a week by yourself that helps you relax.

2. Laughter is the best medicine. Watching comedies with the whole famis a lot of fun, and the belly laughs that follow are great for the soul.

3. Fresh air therapy. Hopping on bikes together and riding like the wor taking a brisk stroll makes every tough situation seem mmanageable. You and your family can try these simple ideas to bring more bala

Summer 2010 Library Program

52 Lighthouse Point Magazine  www.lhpmag.com

The Doreen Gauthier Lighthouse Point Library excitedly announces the plans for their annual Summer Library

Program June 14th through June 18th. The program is

open to children who have completed kindergarten and

through grade 5. We understand that it is still January, but

because of the quality of the events planned and the

associated expense we wanted to give advance notice to

provide ample time to adjust family budgets.

By popular demand our theme is “NASA.”. 2010 marks the

end of the shuttle program. We wish to give our children the

opportunity to learn about NASA and space exploration for

three days provided by Mad Science. These educationally challenging fun days feature hands-on activities “Star Trek

Live” with numerous take-home projects. The instruc tors

are all certified teachers whose enthusiasm for science

make the days challenging endeavors.

The week willculminate on Friday, June 18th when thecampers and their chaperones willboard buses beforesunrise to journey to NASA itself atthe Kennedy Space Center. We will have an opportun

to visit the exhibits and the museum; the day’s highlig will be lunch with an astronaut.

The cost of the entire week’s activities — Monda wet ‘n wild games; three days of Mad Science; and tNASA trip is $350. per child. Registration will open Mar1st and close May 10th. Additional details are availablethe library — see Doreen.

You may notice your furry friend shaking its head, flapping or rubbing its ears along the floors or tilting its head towards anaffected ear. This is your first indication that something is wrong.Ear infections can be very frustrating and challenging conditionsSo what are ears really made of?

The ear is a complex structure with three main parts: the outer ear flap, the ear canal which terminates at the tympanic membrane(eardrum).

The middle ear chamber has a tube (Eustachian tube) thatconnects with the “nasopharynx” (throat area). Bacteria from thethroat often migrate up this tube into the middle ear causinginfections.

The inner ear is also a complex structure and serves as theinterface between the middle ear and the brain and helps Fluffy to

maintain balance.Help me! My ears really hurt!

When ears are infected (inflamed), the ear canal becomesswollen, thickened, painful and moist. This chain of events makesthe ear more hospitable for microorganisms and reduces the size of the ear canal. The ear at this point will be sore and irritated with aburning, itchy, sensation that Fluffy will find insatiable. Headshaking and scratching can lead to ear hematomas (which willrequire surgery), bruising and infection of the skin on the side of the face. The ear infection can spread to the middle ear and inner ear creating a more serious problem.

At the doctor’s office Sometimes it’s too painful to examine Fluffy’s ears without

sedation. Your vet will take an ear swab for checking withmicroscope to see what type of organisms are causing the infectas this determines the choice of treatment. If your pet halongstanding or very acute infection with a build-up of exudatethe ear, or a middle ear infection, then the ears will have to irrigated under sedation to flush out the debris and bacteria.

Medical progress exams are vital! Keep your appointme An important part of Fluffy’s therapy includes having the e

rechecked at regular intervals. Checks on the status of the infectare necessary, otherwise it can progress into more serious proble

with the middle and inner ear. Your vet will need to ensure that tdoes not happen. Cytology swabs will be checked for the numband type of organisms as a measure of the effectiveness of ttreatment. What can I do to keep the ears healthy? • Groomers will pluck the hairs from the ear canal , so groo

regularly • Use ear cleaning solutions and cotton balls to clean the ears 2

times a month • Avoid getting water in the ears and use a drying agent to dry

ears following swimming and bathing.• Check the ears regularly for odors, redness, and scratch marks

CANTANKEROUSLY YOURS

Belated Third Annual Scroogie Awards By Wendell Abern

Dear New Year’s Revelers,I usually write my Scroogie column for December issues. This year,

however, personal problems prevented it. And rather than just write my traditional New Year’s column, I have

decided to publish my Scroogie awards a month late — in the hopes it will put a permanent end to the vicious rumor someone started that Ihave turned into a nice guy.

I’m not sure who started this rumor, or why, but no one calls me anice guy and gets away with it.

I inaugurated my Scroogie awards in 2007, as an homage to my idoland favorite role model, Ebeneezer Scrooge. And I award Scroogies only to those who have proved worthy — through acts of inconsiderateness, boorishness, stupidity, arrogance, or any other trait that just plain ranklesme and deserves my curmudgeonly wrath.

Each year, I encounter the same major problem: hundreds of candidates, too little space to mention them all. However, those listedbelow clearly outdistanced all others.

1 – “Means-well” Scroogie: Dr. Smiles. That is not really her name, of course. I just don’t want to embarrass

her because I know she really does mean well.I love Dr. Smiles. Far as I’m concerned, she is the best internist in

South Florida. However, she recently prescribed a Neti Pot for me to help clear my

sinuses.“A Neti Pot? What the hell is that? It sounds like a bedside commode

for sick people.”“It’s great for sinuses. Everybody loves it. You’ll love it, too.The Neti Pot resembles a mini-teapot, except the end of the spout is

fitted with a knob that will fit into a nostril. You fill the pot with luke warm water, add a packet of saline powder, stir until dissolved, then tip your headback and fit the Neti Pot over one nostril. The solution shoots up your nose, circles around your sinus cavity, then drips out the other nostril.

I saw Dr. Smiles a week later. She asked how I liked the Neti Pot.“That is not a medical treatment!” I shouted. “It’s water boarding.”“It is a very common and popular treatment for sinuses.”“Oh yeah? Then how come when I finished I confessed to four

burglaries and two house break-ins?”“Oh, stop complaining. I can tell it helped by the way you sound.”“Helped? I’m reporting you to the Joint Chiefs of Staff for torture

under the guise of medical treatment.”She rummaged in a drawer for a gigantic hypodermic.“It’s time for your flu shot,” she said.Dr. Smiles knows I don’t mess with anyone who brandishes needles.2 – “Patients Last” Scroogie: The Benny Hill Clinic.Even though I am filled with contempt for much of the medical world

in South Florida, Benny Hill was a flat-out, hands-down winner.Rarely does anyone answer a phone at this world-renowned clinic.

When someone does, the caller is immediately put on hold and mustlisten to an endless recorded infomercial.

This clinic houses most of my own personal doctors, all of whom Irank as superlative. Every once in a while, I try to call one of them. Inow know everything I ever wanted to know about early pregnanciesand nagging PMS problems.

Still, the doctors are outstanding. I once wrote a commendatory letter to the CEO of this clinic, lauding the medical staff.

He never answered.

Three years ago, I underwent two major operations in the hospassociated with this clinic. Two separate eight-day stays. As anyone whas ever spent time in a hospital knows, nurses run everything.

I was so impressed with the nurses and the care I received, I wranother laudatory letter to the same CEO.

He never answered that one either.Instead, I recently received a letter from him. He actually had

chudspah to ask me to send money to add new programs and servicI wrote back, saying I would like to contribute a sizable sum, ask

him to phone me personally because I wouldn’t put the figure writing.

He actually did call. I put him on hold.3 – “Instruction Writing” Scroogie: a tie!I maintain that a special Obfuscation School exists that teach

technical writers how to write instructions that will deliberatbefuddle consumers while seemingly making sense. This year’s Scroogie for such obfuscation goes to two brilli

practitioners who no doubt passed the course with high marks. A. Cordless phone instructions.Radio Shack had run out of single phones; I had to buy a two-pa

ON RELIGION

Jumping Into The Deep End By Reverend Jack Noble

I was talking with a friend of mine a few days ago, and she was saying that she

would very much like to make friends

here, but that she is so shy and intimidated. As we explored it a bitfurther, I was somewhat taken aback. This is a very attractive, intelligent, winsome lady. She is wonderful mother and wife. I shared

with her that I too feel those pangs of shyness or intimidation, andthat sometimes I just needed to “hold my nose,” as it were, and jumpinto the deep end.

I am not certain why, but since then, that conversation has beenrolling around in my mind. I suppose I have been thinking about itso much because from time-to-time we are each caused to face thoseaspects of our personality that are challenging and difficult, and thatare holding us back from being the person we want to become. Why is that; I wonder.

I suspect the root of the problem is probably fear. There is alwaysa fear of being rejected, or of not being smart enough, or cleaver

enough, or…? Basil King, many years ago wrote a book with thearresting title of  The Conquest of Fear , and in it he offers this moststartling comment, BE BOLD — AND MIGHTY FORCES WILL COMETO YOUR AID.

Really? That’s quite a statement. Then again, the more I have pondered it, the more I have to admit

that in the past whenever I have fallen short, it has been almost never because I have tried and failed, and it is almost always because I have

allowed fear to stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, whI have plunged deeply “into the water,” as it were, impelled bmomentary flash of courage, I have always been able to swim unt

got my feet on the ground again.Boldness, you know, is not reckless or foolhardy, not at

Boldness requires a deliberate decision to, perhaps, bite off mothan we have ever been able to chew before. Boldness is not vagor mysterious. It requires us to call up the latent powers of eneskill, judgment, creative ideas — and maybe even physical strenand endurance.

That idea of being bold works, I think, in almost any area we miconsider — finding a friend, creating community, taking on the chof some committee, perhaps, or taking a new job. And unless we hopelessly unqualified, I am suggesting we will deliver, our prour competitive instinct, our sense of obligation will see us throu

Isn’t it curious how spiritual laws carry-over into almost any aspof life.

Now, with all this said, this personality trait — this putting ourselin a position where we are required to extend ourselves — is nachieved overnight. It takes practice. It can be taught to child ren adeveloped in adults. Confidence though is a cumulative thing.

One of the most astute observations I have ever heard is,Love life. Be grateful for it always. And show your gratitude by

shying away from its challenges. Try always to live a bit beyond yocapacities. You’ll find that you never succeed.

In today’s market, remember thetwo white elephants in the room (Fore - closures) and (Excessive Inventory)!

If the listing price is not justifiable, resist the temptation to list your home higher than comparable

solds or  pending sales. View your upgrades realistically. Upgrades will help you sell

faster but do not always translate dollar for dollar in terms of pricing. While this appraisal logic befuddles me, it holds trueconsistently. Example: You remodel your home with anexpensive, designer kitchen, new upscale baths, etc., and spend$250,000. The house across the street, same size, same land,

same location, is not upgraded. You believe you should get$250,000 more. But you may only get $100,000 more.

If you succumb to overpricing your home, (which is naturaltendency and easy to do) you are about to enter a world of emotional suffering and financial losses unimaginable. First, your home sits on the market with buyers coming and going but nooffers. Then, you get the first price change. If it’s not enough, you get the same response. Meanwhile, every month that goes by, you’re spending thousands of dollars in carrying costs.

Soon, your home is pegged as “tired” since it’s been on themarket for over 100 days and so in desperation, there is another significant price drop. But, by this time, buyers start thinkingthat since so many other buyers passed up your home, theremust be something wrong with it. After months of this stigma,

finally, you give up, and drop the price again. Result, a bucomes in, knows you’re primed for a lowball offer, and thaexactly what you get.

Meantime, with all the showings, you’re exhausted becauevery showing means picking up the home. You invest huemotional energy causing stress. It’s difficult to sleep at nig  You start asking, “What’s wrong with my home?” Truthnothing, but you started off overpriced, and the market hpunished you.

If you really want to sell your home, and move on, cometerms with the reality of today’s market. Always, the market sthe price.

And when other homes are similar, but priced right, and sit’s because those sellers faced the reality squarely in the eand made a conscious decision: If I want to really sell and moon with my life, I will have to price to sell . These sellers get osooner, do not have lost carrying costs or emotional drain. Wh you’re shaking your head in complete disappointment, thastute sellers are already off and starting their new lives.

Overpricing your home is an expensive, frustrating, agonizilesson to learn. Please try to resist the temptation to overpric

 A Healthy New Year?

THE EYES HAVE IT

The Gift Of Sight For The New Year  By Dr. Gary Goberville

Now that the holidays are over, you may be considering or perhaps are already

working on a New Year resolution that you

made a few weeks ago. Each January, we hear patient’s tell us, “This year, I’m going to lose weight,” or “This year, I’m going to join a gymor start exercising” just to name a few. Unfortunately, although theseresolutions were made with good intentions most people eventually fall back into their old habits within a few weeks and the resolutionis soon forgotten. There may be a multitude of factors responsible for the demise of these resolutions, but the primary factor is always thesame, it was going to take some commitment and take us out of our comfort zone! If you could only lose weight and stay healthy by

watching TV and eating snacks all day it would be great wouldn’t it! Your health however is your single most important investment

and as such, should be your top priority. It is the one thing in life that you have the most control of. All that you have and will accumulatein life is meaningless if you are not healthy enough to enjoy it later on.

Fortunately, it’s never too late to start, and although you may not beable to reverse all of the damage you have created in the past, youcan certainly stop it or slow it down starting right now.

So if you have made a healthy resolution, I encourage you to stick to it. If not, and are considering one, let me give you a few suggestions. The two most important factors affecting your health are diet and exercise. So let’s keep this very simple, if you are notexercising at all, start walking at least 15 to 20 minutes a day, several

times a week. If you are unable to walk, use any other formactivity that you are capable of to help increase your heart raRegarding diet, I could speak volumes on this but since space

limited we will again keep it very simple. The three most importthings to eliminate or significantly reduce from your diet are sugrefined grains and bad fats. Reducing these items alone wsignificantly lower your risk for cancer, diabetes, heart disea

Alzheimer’s, and arthritis just to name few. Sugar is foeverywhere and is often cleverly disguised by the food manuftures so you must learn how to read labels. If the label contasugar, high fructose corn syrup or sucrose within the first fingredients, just say no! Refined grains include most all breabreakfast cereals, rolls, bagels and white rice. Bad fats are the “trfatty acids” which are most often labeled as hydrogenated, partiahydrogenated or fractionated oils. Most highly processed foods loaded with sugars and bad fats and many of those foods labeled

“Low Fat” contain incredible amounts of sugar otherwise peo would not eat it!

So if you are looking for a healthy new year’s resolution thatrelatively easy to stick with now you have it. Start exercising, jsome walking will do for now, and start reducing the sugar, refingrains and bad fats from your diet. Remember, the image you seethe mirror today is the result of how you have taken care of yohealth for the last several years. How good a job have you done

The month of January is National Eye Caremonth. 2010 is the year to be more practicaland less frivolous with your choices. MakeNew Year's resolutions to improve andenhance your family's life by giving the gift

of sight to your or your love ones! Regardless of how you choose tocelebrate the New Year, the fact still remains that our eye health, and thehealth of our family's eyes, should be the number one priority.

The following are suggestions from Dr.Gary Goberville’s Sight Savers' list . Consider an eye exam and give sight to a special childor adult in your life. One of the top reasons for a child’s poor performance in school is poor vision. Ten million school children

in America have vision conditions that impact learning. Your child'sfirst comprehensive eye assessment should be scheduled at sixmonths of age. A test for health problems such as retinal blastoma,

visual acuity, excessive or unequal amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism needs to be preformed. Evaluationof eye alignment which examine eye teaming ability should also bedone. Although problems are not common, it is important to identify children who have risk factors at this stage. Later, children as youngas three years old should have an eye exams on an annual basis torule out lazy eye or other health problems.

Looking to enhance your child's education? Select toys thatstimulate visual development, improve hand-eye coordination anddemonstrate spatial relationships. Eye-friendly toys help develop

eyes, the brain and eye-hand coordination. Young children shoselect brightly colored mobiles, blocks, balls, stacking toys, puzzand peg movement boards. To enhance fine motor skills four aup, look for magnetic letters, stringing beads, and video games. Mimportantly, avoid slingshots, dart guns and arrows especially children under six years of age.

Make a resolution to protect you eyes from harm. Adults todspend hours working on their computers causing compueyestrain which can progress to cause neck and shoulder padecreased vision, and reduced efficiency. The most commproblems are related to improper eyeglasses. Presbyopic users more comfortable with progressive lenses, which give proper ran

of distance. Computer lenses without a line offer a greater field vision. Use glare resistant lenses to reduce glare from your computhat can cause eye strain. .

Help preserve eyesight with an Optomap laser retinal exam. TOptomap evaluates the health of the inner layer of the eye, aother health problems. AGE-related macular degeneration (AMdestroys the vision of millions of people and robs them of thindependence. Prevention is the key, and an Optomap can detthese problems.

If you are like most people and thinking practical for the year 20the Gift of Sight will have a profound effect on someone’s life for ma

years to come. Your sight is one of your most valuable resources. ESite Vision Center wishes you a Healthy and Happy New Year.

Stepping Up

Prescription Drug Misus

Prevention in 2010

 By Sheriff Al Lamberti

Hot Off the Grill  By John Offerdahl

(a.k.a. The Gridiron Griller)

The increased misuse of prescription drugs in BrowaCounty has not gone unnoticed by law makers or lenforcement. The Broward County Medical Examiner had mthan 500 drug-related overdose deaths last year and statistshow that more than 25,000 people die from unintentional droverdoses in our nation annually. Frequently, a variety of illidrugs and prescription drugs were the direct and immedicause of the victim’s death. Most people do not realize hazards associated with combining pharmaceuticals with illdrugs. Oftentimes, mixing drugs can create an unintended aunpredictable lethal mixture.

Our undercover operations revealed many out-of-state dr

addicts and dealers are coming into Broward County to obtprescriptions for narcotics from pain clinics. These clinics known as “pill mills” and the patients are “doctor-shopping”looking for willing doctors to dispense drugs. In November 20the Broward Grand Jury recommended 18 steps to clean Florida’s “pill mills.” The most important step — implementthe Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) — which iselectronic database to track excessive dispensing of prescriptidrugs to doctor-shopping patients. If these recom mendations followed it will go a long way in eliminating prescription druprescribed to dealers and addicts in Broward County.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office continually conducts lenforcement operations to target illegal prescription drug abu

but in 2010 we are stepping up our efforts with an importaeducational component. Through FDLE’s Byrne/JAG stimugrant funding we were able to hire a prescription drprevention specialist — Christine Sawyer. Ms. Sawyer wprovide prescription drug prevention and education prestations to community and homeowner associations, middle ahigh school students and child based organizations.

Additionally, our agency, in partnership with The United WaCommission on Substance Abuse, are planning a multitudeprescription drug “take back” programs throughout BrowCounty. Participants can drop off their unwanted or unusprescription drugs with no questions asked and receive a $5gift card to local stores and pharmacies. To scheduleprescription drug prevention presentation for your commun

group or organization or to learn more about our prescripti“take back” program, e-mail [email protected] or c954.202.3145.

The men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office committed to eliminating the prescription drug abuse problemthis county, but we need your help. If you or a loved onesuffering from addiction, there are many organizations that cassist you. I encourage you to call 2-1-1, Broward’s 24-hour crhotline. AL’S CORNER

Don’t Forget Your License! By Al Siefert

In today’s world you need a permit for most construction andmany repair projects around your home. Many of these projects canbe accomplished by the homeowner with a homeowner permit.

Permit applications are available at the building departmentlocated at 3701 N.E. 22nd Avenue, Lighthouse Point, Florida 33064.

Replacement water heaters, air conditioners, plumbing fixtures, tree removal, landscape lighting, pavers, new fences and fence repair are some examples of what Lighthouse Point requires a permit.

When the repair is an emergency, like a water heater failure, theCity will usually let you do the work (with permission from the

Chief Inspector) and get the permit after the fact. When applying for a permit in Lighthouse Point you will need

the following information for the application. The owner’s name, address and phone number are all common request. You willalso need the property’s legal description, tax folio number and adrawing (two copies) showing the changes you are doing tothe property. In some cases you will need a copy of the survey.

You may need to sign an affidavit stating that you are doing the work yourself.

When the job value exceeds $2,500.00 you will need a Noticeof Commencement (A.K.A. Mechanics Lien Law) signed, notarizedand filed with the County. The address is 115 S. Andrews AvenueRoom 114, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301. The County charges$12.50 for the filing. You will also need to sign the permit

acknowledging that the value of the work is over $2,500.00. TCity requires a deposit of $50.00 when submitting applications.

Can you guess which examples of work below that could done without a permit? The answers are at the end of the artic

1. Painting — Color choices are not restricted2. Dock and deck top board replacement3. Satellite Dishes4. Small storage sheds5. Play ground sets

6. Hot tubs — The portable plug in type7. Roof repair on leaks less than 100 sq. ft. When the work is ready for an inspection you can schedul

next day inspection by calling 954-784-3449 before 3:00 p.m.most cases the City will not be able to give you a time for tinspection. You will need to arrange to have someone there wthe permit and drawings to meet with the inspector.

If you chose to hire a contractor to do any work for you athey ask you to apply for the permits. This usually means that thare not properly licensed or insured. Your best bet is to use someothat is established in the community that can offer references. Answers y-n-y-n-y-n-y

 Merchant of the Month

till not sure which title he enjoys more, “Performer or Hairdresser,” Elliott Varon  is doing his best to make adecent living like the rest of us. Times are crazy, but he sureloves what he does.

Five days a week Elliott works at a wonderfulneighborhood salon in Lighthouse Point called “Hair Design Medi Spa” and in the evening he sings at some of the fabulous country clubs and hotels in the area, workingparties such as weddings, fundraisers, corporate andprivate affairs with his band, which varies from two totwelve pieces.

“I’ve been singing since I was a kid. Then I decided tobecome a hairdresser as a back up. After training for years with some of the finest haircutters and colorists in New  York I moved to South Florida. I began singing in some of the most memorable nightclubs in town for almost fifteen years. Many will remember Mr. Pips, Septembers and Mr Laffs. While I was in the spotlight I decided to use thatattention and open a salon. I named it Varon Salon andsurrounded myself with some of the finest talent in thehair business. What a wonderful way to grow and practice what I had trained to do for years. Singing at night with South Florida’s best musicians; doing hair by day and loving

them both. I was even making some real money at thesame time. What a life.”

Have you seen the ad Elliott runs in our magazine? Heoffers 50% off all services on your first visit. Although heis lucky enough to have a strong following, he obviously likes what he does and wants to do more. “I’ve beencutting hair a long time. It’s just a matter of geometry, which was the one thing I was proficient at in school. That’s one reason I’m good at cutting hair. Now doingcolor is even more fun. Sometimes I feel like a kid in a

crayon box. Thereare no limits to what  you can do with people’s color. Facialfeatures, shapes andcomplexions allcome into play whenthinking color. Let’snot forget coveringgray properly. I’m too  young to go gray. How about you? Thisgetting old stuff isannoying us all, solet’s avoid it any way we can. Come in and say hello. I wato meet all my neighbors.”

The name of Elliott’s music company is Main Eve

Music and Entertainment . It is of course easy enouto find his web page on the net including a little exampof his vocal talents on You Tube. He also sings radio jinglSo many of them you’ve been listening to for yeincluding that familiar Maroone commercial we cant grid of… sorry Elliott but it’s true.

His repertoire includes music for all ages, from the 4to top 40. As a matter of fact he found himself havingbecome the perfect Dee Jay for the younger crew th were getting tired of Sinatra…how dare they. Elliott evdecided to beg his brother Stan, a fabulous singer aguitar player to move down from New York to help hout. They’re making music and happy to be doing it. By t way…yes indeed, they do take requests.

Elliot can be reached at 954-815-3060.
