Three strikes for Obama at the bowling alleyBy Patricia Zengerle (Front RowWashington)

    President Barack Obama may be

struggling to boosta weak economyand push through healthcare reform, but he is making undisputed progressin one area hes raised hisbowling score from an embarrassing37 out of a possible 300 to a144.

The athletic U.S. 47-year-old, known as an enthusiast icbasketball player , scored one of hispresidential races few missteps lastyear during a campaign stop inPennsylvania when hetried bowlingand posted the 37, a result far belowthe respectable range.

So it seemed surprising when hispress secretary, Robert Gibbs, saidObama, who turns48 on Tuesday, had included some bowling in hisbirthday celebrations with friendsduring the weekend at the CampDavid presidential retreat.

It was even more surprising whenGibbs insisted that Obama had rolledan eminently respectable 144, almostquadrupling his score during the ill-fated campaign stop. I watched thelast four throws: three strikes and anine. Im just saying, Gibbs told anincredulous White House presscorps. I told the president, Look if

    y o u d h a v e d o n e t h i s i n

Pennsylvania, my life would havebeen a little easier last spring.

Thatawkward performance at asport strongly identifiedwith theU.S. working classwasmocked byObamas critics as a sign that thecandidate, a former law professor andgraduate of two of the countrys mostelite universities, could not relate toregular Americans.

Obama has said since that he hasbeen practicing his bowling. AndGibbs insisted the higher score wasaccurate. The bowling happenedright in front of me, he said.

McCain opposes former rivals first Supreme Court nomineeBy Thomas Ferraro (Front Row

    Washington)Submitted at 8/3/2009 1:52:22 PM

Nine months after losing the U.S.presidential election to DemocratBarack Obama, Republican JohnMcCain is still taking center stage tovoice disagreement with his formerU.S. Senate colleague.

On Monday, McCain announced ina Senate speech that he would voteagainst Obamas first U.S. SupremeCourt nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, afederal judge for the past 17 years.

    She is an immensely qualified

candidate, McCain conceded. But he added: I do not believe that

she shares my belief in judicialrestraint.

Echoing the concerns of a numberof Senate Republican leaders,McCain complained she has ruledbased not strictly by the law but alsopersonal beliefs.

Despite a wall of Republicanopposition, Sotomayor seemsvirtually certain to be confirmed thisweek by the Democratic-led Senate.

    The American Bar Association

gave Sotomayor its top rating, she

has been supported by a number oflaw enforcement groups, and the U.S.Chamber of Commerce, which oftensides with Republicans, urged theSenate to confirm her, saying herrecord shows that she would be fairto business.

McCain said he monitoredSotomayors testimony at her Senateconfirmation hearing last month. Hesaid liked what he heard, but didntnecessarily believe it.

She clearly stated that as a judge,I dont make law. While I applaud

this statement, it does not reflect her

record as an appellate court judge. As an appellate court judge, Judge

Sotomayor has been overturned bythe Supreme Court six times,McCain said.

McCain lost to Obama after issuingcountless warnings about the nowpopular president. He put out anotherwarning on Monday this one tofellow lawmakers.

The American people will bewatching this week when the Senatevo tes on Judge So tomayorsnomination. She is a judge who has

    forsworn judicial activism in her

confirmation hearings, but who has along record of it, McCain said.

I f she uses he r l i fe t imeappointment on the bench as a perchto remake law in her own image of

justice, I expect that Americans willhold us senators accountable,McCain said.

Bill Clinton meets N Korea leader(BBC News | Americas | WorldEdition)

Former US President Bill Clintonhas met North Korean leader KimJong-il during an unannounced visitto the country, state media haveannounced.

Mr Clinton is in Pyongyang todiscuss the fate of jai led US

journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee.He is the highest-profile American

to visit since his secretary of state,Madeleine Albright, in 2000.

Analysts say Mr Clinton may alsotry to ease the deadlock over theNorth's nuclear ambitions.

The Korean Central News Agency(KCNA) said that Mr Clinton had"courteously" conveyed a verbalmessage from US President BarackObama, although the White Housesaid that Mr Clinton had not carried amessage from Mr Obama.

According to North Korea's officialstate media, Kim Jong-il hosted adinner for the former US president, before the two men exchanged whatis described as a "broad range ofopinion".

    Face-to-face time with the North

Korean leader is extremely rare forWestern politicians, and granting theopportunity to Bill Clinton could be asign that he is going to be given whathe came for, the release of twoAmerican journalists.

Mr Clinton is also reported to havedelivered a verbal message fromPresident Obama, but the WhiteHouse is remaining very tight lipped. It says the case of the journalistsmust remain separate from widerpolitical issues.

    W a s h i n g t o n m a d e n o

announcement of Mr Clinton's tripprior to his arrival, but in a laterstatement stressed that this was aprivate visit.

"While this solely private mission tosecure the release of two Americansis on the ground, we will have nocomment," White House spokesmanRobert Gibbs told reporters.

"We do not want to jeopardise thesuccess of former President Clinton'smission."

    The secrecy surrounding this trip isa sign of i ts sensitive nature,a c c o r d i n g t o t h e B B C ' scorrespondent in Seoul , JohnSudworth - as well as the fact thatthis is a gamble by Washington.

The last visit to North Korea by aformer American president - JimmyCarter in 1994 - led to an importantstep forward in relations between thetwo countries, and Mr Clinton may

be hoping his trip could have thesame effect.

But some analysts question thewisdom of such a high-profile visitso soon after North Korea conducteda string of nuclear and missile tests indefiance of the UN Security Council- say i ng i t may be seen byPyongyang as a reward for bad

behaviour.Mr Clinton landed in Pyongyang inan unmarked plane and was greetedat the airport by North Koreanofficials, including chief nuclearnegotiator Kim Kye-gwan and YangHyong-sop, vice president ofparl iament .

As he stepped down from theplane, a little girl came forward topresent him with a bouquet offlowers.'Entering negotiations'

No official itinerary for the visit

has been announced. There had been speculation that Mr

Clinton might see leader Kim Jong-il,whom analysts say is eager toimprove relations with Washingtonas he prepares to name a successor.

Mr Kim is thought to have suffereda stroke a year ago, and also haschronic diabetes and heart disease.

Analysts say his third son is alreadybeing lined up to take over powerone day.

Laura Ling and Euna Lee werefound guilty of entering North Koreaillegally across the Chinese border inMarch, and sentenced to 12 years'hard labour.

They were arrested by NorthKorean guards while filming a videoabout refugees for California-basedinternet broadcaster Current TV.

According to KCNA, the tworeporters have admitted entering the

country illegally. But the women's families have

always claimed that Lee, 36, andLing, 32, had no intention of crossinginto North Korea.

    They fear the two reporters mayb e c o m e p o l i t i c a l p a w n s i nnegotiations between Washingtonand Pyongyang.

Last month US Secretary of StateHillary Clinton requested an amnestyfor the women asking that they beallowed to return home.

Former releasesThis is not the first time a senior

US statesman has gone to NorthKorea to negotiate for the release ofAmerican citizens.

In 1994, then-congressman BillRichardson - now governor of NewMexico - helped negotiate the releaseof Bobby Hall, one of two pilots of aUS army helicopter shot down afterstraying into North Korea.

Two years later he negotiated therelease of Evan Hunziker, who wasdetained on suspicion of spying afterswimming the Yalu river border.

Critics say that Mr Clinton's trip -coming so soon after North Korealaunched a nuclear test - will beexploited for maximum propagandavalue by Pyongyang.

Although Bill Clinton's arrival wascovered by North Korea's eveningtelevision news, it was not until after

apparently more newsworthy items, such as the improving qualitystandards at a biscuit factory, ourcorrespondent in Seoul says.

4 Internet News RecordJobs trump fears of terrorists in Michigan town(AP)(Yahoo! News: U.S. News)

    Submitted at 8/3/2009 6:37:37 PM

    STANDISH, Mich. To manypeople struggling in this job-starvedp a r t o f r u r a l M i c h i g a n ,unemployment is a bigger threat thanterrorists.

With unemployment at more than17 percent, many residents say theywould welcome detainees fromGuantanamo Bay in order to save the280 jobs at a prison scheduled toclose because of state budget cuts.

"We'll take the most dangerousprisoners the world has to offer if wehave to," corrections officer PaulPiche said Monday.

    T h e S t a n d i s h M a x i m u mCorrectional Facility and the militarypenitentiary at Fort Leavenworth,Kan., are possible locations for aheavily guarded site to hold the 229suspected al-Qaida, Taliban andforeign fighters now jailed at theGuantanamo Bay detention camp inCuba, senior U.S. officials say.

In Kansas, the prospect ofincarcerating terrorist was met withdismay. Some officials and residentssaid the foreign detainees wouldmake the area a security risk.

"This is a bad idea on a hurry-up,

artificial timeline," said Sen. SamBrownback, a Republican. "Theyshould be treated with dignity andhumanely, but not here."

Gov. Mark Parkinson said heopposed the move because FortLeavenworth's facilities did not meetsecurity requirements, not because of

a "xenophobic fear of foreignprisoners." Parkinson, a Democrat,

also said it would harm the localeconomy by requiring increasedsecurity along the Missouri River, arailroad line and the local airport.

The reaction was far more positivein Michigan, where signs outsidemany businesses and even a Catholicchurch bear the message: "SaveStandish Max."

    "Anything that keeps the prisonopen is fine with me," said PerryP e l t o n , o w n e r o f W h e e l e r ' sR e s t a u r a n t o n M a i n S t r e e t .

A third-generation resident of thearea, 48-year-old Pelton said he lived

    less than 2 miles from the prison andw a s n ' t w o r r i e d a b o u t t h eGuantanamo inmates escaping. Thefacility is surrounded by a 16-foot-high double chain link fence withrazor-ribbon wire. There are five guntowers, and armed guards constantlypatrol the perimeter in a vehicle.

"No one's ever gotten out of there,"he said. "They've got a 19-year trackrecord since that place opened, andthey'd probably have even tightersecurity if we get these al-Qaidapeople."

The prison holds about 600 inmatesand is the top employer in the

    communi ty abou t 145 mi lesnor thwes t o f De t ro i t .

Piche was among half a dozenemployees protesting Mondayagainst plans to close the prison. They held signs calling for the recallo f Democra t ic Gov . Jenn i fe rGranholm and other messages such

as "Save Our Town."Granholm's office said in a

s ta tement tha t the governor"continues to have concerns aboutthe homeland security implications ofrelocating Guantanamo detainees toMichigan" and "is not in favor ofmoving detainees to Michigan" untilthe federal government addresses theconcerns.

    A t t h e S t a n d i s h p r i s o n ,administrative assistant RebeccaBailey said the news of Guantanamoprisoners "caught us off guard. Wedon't have any information about it."

Michigan officials have soughtother out-of-state prisoners to keep

the prison open. Granholm sent aletter in June to California Gov.Arnold Schwarzenegger formallyoffering to take for a fee some ofthe Golden State's prison inmates. That proposal is still on the table.

    Outside a local hardware store,however, demolition worker DanDrouillard said he didn't wants u s p e c t e d t e r r o r i s t s i n t h en e i g h b o r h o o d .

"If they don't bring them here, wewon't have to worry about them,"said Drouillard, 59. "Send them backto their own country and let themtake care of them."

That was more similar to thereaction in Kansas, where peopleworried about the safety of thecommunity.

    "These people are a lot moredangerous than anybody we havehere," said Leavenworth residentA . C . B y r d , a r e t i r e d A r m y

noncommissioned officer. "Theirmission is to kill Americans and

anyone who disagrees with them."Resident Gladys Rivard said there

were "soft targets" such as schoolsand soldier-family housing thatwould be at risk.

Supporters in Michigan said thepossibility of retaliatory terroristattacks seemed remote.

"What would terrorists blow up inStandish? We're not exactly a bigtarget," said Elyse Sanford, 23, ahairdresser at a salon near the prison.

    Local officials have previouslys u g g e s t e d t o M i c h i g a n ' scongressional delegation that

Guantanamo detainees be sent toStandish, City Manager Michael J.Moran III said.

Aside from providing employment, the prison covers about 25 percent ofthe municipal budget with paymentsfor water and sewer service, Moransaid. It also provides customers forlocal businesses.

Moran said he'd heard littlereaction from townspeople butexpected most would support theidea.

"If anybody did escape, they'd havea surprise," he said. "We're acommunity of hunters. Just about

    everybody has guns."___

Microsoft's big newXbox update makessome game installsmuch, much smallerBy Tim Stevens (Engadget)

    Submitted at 8/4/2009 8:56:00 AM

The ability to optionally installgames on the Xbox 360's hard driveis something we've been jazzed aboutfor some time, because while themachine's DVD drive isn't terriblyslow, it isn't terribly quiet either --and who has time for progress bars? However, those of us still rockingolder, 20GB machines quicklydiscovered that the 6-plus GB installfiles of some games put a real hurtin'on what little disk space we had left, leaving us to choose betweenreducing load-times while exploringthe Urban Wasteland or deleting allthose random demos we keepforgetting about. Microsoft has asolution, and this time it's not amoderately less expensive new harddrive. Included in the upcoming

Xbox 360 dashboard update, due oneweek from today, is a previouslyunmentioned feature that shrinksthose game installs, sometimes by ahuge margin. King of Fighters XIIwent from 3.4GB down to 703MB,while Raiden Fighters Aces is now

just 484MB. Any of you early birdpreviewers finding other titles thathave trimmed the fat?

The future of fabrication is here: Shapewaysannounces stainless steel printingBy John Biggs (CrunchGear)Submitted at 8/4/2009 6:40:51 AM

Sure youre not going to make aHatori Hanzo sword - yet - butShapeways, a 3D fabrication service, has just announced stainless steelprinting, allowing you to make steelobjects as easily as you would maderesin or plastic prototypes. Thatsright: something that took our ancientancestors generations to perfect isnow available to anyone with a

CAD/CAM program and some RedBull.First, the press info:

Innovation Takes the Stage withMetal 3D printing for modelers andcreatives

Shapeways offers 3D Printing inStainless Steel

SIGGRAPH (August 4, 2009) Many 3D modelers have found theirway to Shapeways to bring theirpersonal designs to life by using 3Dprinting. Until now the materialswere limited to different kind ofpo lymers . Today Shapewaysbecomes the worlds first company

offering 3D printing in stainless steelfor everyone.Technique

This is a completely new techniquewhich deposits stainless steel powderin a very thin layer, combining itwith a binding material. Printedobjects are built up like this, layer bylayer, gradually creating the form justas you designed it on the computerscreen. When complete, they areinfused with bronze and cured in anoven. After cooling, the models canbe left in the original steel finish ortumbled to get a great polished look.

So, as you see, the objects arent

carved in steel like Terminator parts.Instead they are made of layered steelpowder. This would allow you to

build heavy-duty items includingjewelery and, dare I say it, car parts. The possibilities, in a sense, areendless.

That said were proud to announcethat one lucky commenter willreceive a stainless steel item of theirchoice. This could include itemsfrom the website or a small objectyou design yourself. Leave youremail in comments below and wellpick one winner at random on Fridayat noon Eastern.

There once was a time when a 12megapixel cameraphone would have

Its face looksrather like a PMP with a 3-inchWQVGA LCD, but on the back is thestandard sort of 3x pop-out zoom thatyou'd expect on a compact shooter, sitting next to a tiny xenon flash. It'llcapture unnecessarily high resolutionimages while being crippled to VGAvideo, play back MP3 and AAC files, and tune into the Weekly Top 40over FM. Yes, it'll even make calls, but with only tri-band GSM/EDGE

Netflix rumored to bebringing Watch Instantly toiPhones, skepticism advisedBy Chris Ziegler (Engadget)

    Submitted at 8/4/2009 6:44:00 AM

Multichannel News is passing onword from "an industry executivefamiliar with Netflix's plans" that thecompany is prepping an app for theiPhone and iPod touch (not tomention the Wii, which we've heardbefore) that would let users enjoytheir Watch Instantly queues fromthe comfort of the small screen --

likely restricted to WiFi, of course, because the mere thought of trying tostream a movie over a saturated 3Gnetwork is about as brutal asfingernails on a chalkboard. It's acute rumor; the overlap in Netflixand iPhone owner demographics hasto number in the hundreds ofthousands, so it's easy to understandwhy the thought of catching up onFriday Night Lights on the roadwould go over wel l wi th thepopulace.

A couple problems here, though:first off, Watch Instantly doesn't store

    content locally, which means you'vego t t o mai n t a i n an i n t e rne tconnection to enjoy the show.

Assuming the no-3G thing pannedout -- and rest assured, it would --who wants to be stuck in a coffeeshop for hours on end because youwant to finish out a movie you'vestarted? Secondly, if there's one thingApple loves, it's maintaining controlof the media ecosystem; we'll see hellfreeze over before we'll see WatchInstantly on Apple TV, so whywould the iPhone be any different?Of course, there's nothing stopping

Netflix from creating a WatchInstantly app, but getting it into theApp Store i s another mat teraltogether -- and barring some wildFCC ruling, we're not seeing Appleletting that happen.

Palm's ad agency "lovesthat you're creeped out"by new TV spotsBy Joshua Topolsky (Engadget)

    Submitted at 8/4/2009 9:48:00 AM

Advertising Age has taken a deepdive into Palm's latest string ofunsettling, polarizing ads -- youknow, the ones with the girl-- in anattempt to explain the company'sintention with the creepy spots. Theindustry paper spoke with GaryKoepke , t he co- founder and

execut ive creat ive di rector atModernista, the company whichdeveloped and produced the shortclips. According to Gary, he's happythat viewers find the commercialsupsetting, stating that "The Pre isprobably being talked about morethan other phones right now becauseof the marketing and advertising, andthat's a good thing. Could the adswork harder to show exactly how thephone works? Yes, but we knew itwould be polarizing people to have awoman not shout at them and tell aninteresting story." Apparently theagency is taking its own stab atMicrosoft's Seinfeld / Bill Gatesstrategy, which means viewers don't

necessarily have to like (or evenunderstand) the ads... as long as theykeep talking about them. Of course, that game plan may work for acompany like Microsoft, whicharguably has nothing to lose if theyrun a few ill-received spots. Palm, onthe other hand, won't get a secondchance to make a first impressionwith a lot of people, and since itsfortune is currently riding on the

device these ads attempt to sell toconsumers, i t 's a pret ty ri skyproposition. C'mon, how could thefolks that brought you the Foleo bewrong?

Salesactually dipped a little under 3%, butmanagement is diligently fighting thegood fight when it comes toefficiencies. Both costs of sales andselling, general and administrativeexpenses went down.

    According to Bloomberg, the

From Economist.com It is possibleto prevent the collapse of commercialfish stocks

BORIS WORM, a marinebiologist, has spent much of hisacademic life studying fish. In 2006he came to the depressing conclusionthat by 2048 the worlds commercialfisheries would have collapsed. Fishwould no longer be on the menu. ButDr Worm is no pessimist and on July3 1 s t h e p u b l i s h e d a m o r eencouraging piece of work inScience. It suggests that, with propermanagement, it ought to be possibleto rebuild the worlds fisheries.

Dr Worm, who works at DalhousieUniversity in Nova Scotia, Canada, conducted the study in collaborationwith Ray Hilborn of the University ofWashington, Seattle, who was aferocious critic of his initial analysis. For two years the pair, along with 19colleagues, gathered data from ten ofthe worlds large fisheries. Theyfound a mixed picture, in whichsome species were overfished insome places and not in others.

What gave Dr Worm and DrHilborn cause for hope was that, infive of the ten fisheries, steps taken

to curb the damage were beginning topay off. They drew this conclusion

    because exploitation rates (theproportions of available fish caught)in these areas were falling. Ther e s e a r c h e r s e x a m i n e d e i g h tmanagement techniques used to

rebuild fisheries, including closingcertain areas to fishing, limiting thecatch permitted and restricting thegear used to haul fish from the sea. They concluded that although thedetails varied with the local context,a combination of catch quotascoupled with strategic measuresaimed at specific species, such asusing certain types of fishing netswhose shape and mesh size aredesigned to catch only certain sortsof fish, usually worked best.

The researchers also recommendthat the maximum sustainableyield, an internationally agreed

measure of how much can be takenfrom a fishery, should be thought ofas the upper limit on exploitationrates rather than as a target. Theiranalysis suggests that fishing a littlebelow this level is the most efficientway of ensuring a sustainableincome.

The same issue of Science alsoreports a second optimistic fisheries-related study. This looked at therestoration of oyster beds inChesapeake Bay, an inlet that liesbetween Maryland and Virginia, inthe United States.

Previous attempts to boost thenumbers of native oysters in the bay

by banning oyster fishing had proveddisappointing because the molluscsfailed to re-establish themselves. However, Romuald Lipcius of theCollege of William and Mary, in

Gloucester Point, Virginia, and hiscolleagues, did succeed in boostingthe number of native oysters. In fact, they report the largest restoration ofnative oyster numbers anywhere inthe world.

The researchers constructed oysterreefs in nine protected sanctuaries onthe Great Wicomico River, whichflows into Chesapeake Bay. Insteadof just piling the oysters up close tothe riverbed, as had been done in thepast, they built reefs of variousheights above the bed for them togrow on. After three years, theyfound five times as many oysters

living on reefs that stood high in thewater as were on the lower-lyingreefs. Altogether, there were 185m ofthe molluscs. Dr Lipcius thussuggests that creating high-standingartificial reefs could help withrestoration projects elsewhereandthe two groups of researcherstogether have shown that it ispossible, if you try, to pluck both fishand molluscs from the depths ofdespair.

Google CEO QuittingApples Board NotEnough to Stop FTCBy Ben Parr (Mashable!)Submitted at 8/3/2009 7:56:47 PM

While the FCCs investigation ofApples rejection of the GoogleVoice iPhone App has been makingbig headlines the last few days, another government investigationinto the two companies seems to beslowing down (but not stopping):The Federal Trade Commissions(FTC) interlocking directoratesprobe.

For the last few months, the FTChas been investigating whether Appleand Google have been participatingin anti-competitive practices byhaving Googles CEO on Applesboard of directors. ConsideringGoogle has several competingproducts (Android, Google Chrome,Chrome OS), it made some sense.

Now that Googles CEO hasresigned from Apples board, youdthink the investigation would beover. Not so, according to the FTC.They put out a statement earliertoday giving a thumbs-up toSchmidts resignation but clearlystating the investigation will

    continue:On August 3, 2009, Apple

    announced that Eric E. Schmidt,Chief Executive Officer of Google,was stepping down from its board.We have been investigating theG o o g l e / A p p l e i n t e r l o c k i n gdirectorates issue for some time andcommend them for recognizing thatsharing directors raises competitiveissues, as Google and Appleincreasingly compete with eachother, said Bureau of Competition

Director Richard Feinstein. We willcontinue to investigate remaininginterlocking directorates between thecompanies.

So why isnt this case going away? The answers simpler than you mightthink: Google and Apple still share adirector: Arthur Levinson, the formerCEO of biotech giant Genentech.Until he resigns from one of the twoboards, the investigation willcontinue. Once he leaves though, itwould be difficult to justify chargingeither company with any wrongdoingretroactively. Expect Levinson toleave one of the two boards in the

    near future.Besides, neither company was

really focusing on the FTC probeanyway. Now its about the FCCGoogle Voice investigation, wheretheyre on opposite sides. The eventsof the last few days are probably thebeginning of a new era of standingon opposite ends for the two storiedgiants. Reviews: Android, Google,Google Chrome

14 Internet News RecordHOW TO: Build Your CompanysProfile on LinkedInBy Adam Ostrow (Mashable!)

    Submitted at 8/3/2009 3:21:12 PM

    This post originally appeared on theAmerican Express OPEN Forum,w h e r e M a s h a b l e r e g u l a r l ycontributes articles about leveragingsocial media and technology in smallbusiness.

LinkedIn, through its networking, question and answer, and applicationfeatures (which I recently wroteabout on OPEN) is already apowerful tool for maintaining andestablishing relationships in thebusiness world. But it can also be anenormously valuable way to attracttop ta len t to your company ,especially if you use all of theoptions available to you.

While posting a job to LinkedIn issimilar to any other job website adding details about the position, skills, and requirements where thesite separates itself is with companyprofiles, allowing you to providepotential candidates with a lot moreinformation about your company andthe people that work there. Hereshow they work and how to set oneup:

    1. To get started, go to the Companies menu on LinkedIn.

From there, select Add Company.2. Enter basic information about

your company, like its description, number of employees, and industry itoperates in.

    3. Follow LinkedIns wizard for

creating your company profile youll be able to add a logo, locations, and a feed for yourcompany blog.

Once youve completed LinkedInssteps for getting setup, your companyprofile will be available. Now iswhere it gets interesting though. Inaddition to showing off the basicinformation you provided, LinkedInwill pull in data about your companyfrom around the site.

So, for example, all of your joblistings will automatically show upon your profile, along with links tothe profiles of all current employees, former employees, new hires, andrecent promotions. LinkedIn alsodoes analysis of your company andthe connections that your employeeshave on the network. For example, itwill automatically calculate your

companys median age, top schools, and other companies that they arewell-connected to.

As you can imagine, all of thisaggregate data about your companygives potential candidates (as well as

anyone else interested in yourcompany) a lot of information to dive

into and help determine if it might bea good fit for them. And for you, once its setup, it all happensautomatically as you and youremployees use LinkedIn, though youcan always make edits to yourcompanys basic profile information.

LinkedIn recently also added ap r e m i u m p r o d u c t C u s t o mCompany Profiles that lets you addmore features, like videos about yourcompany and positions, interactivepolls, and several customizationoptions for recruiting. These arewor th cons ider ing fo r la rgercompanies (they come at a price), butfor small businesses, a basicLinkedIn company profile should beenough to add lots of efficiency tothe recruiting process both forcandidates and for you. .Eco: The DomainExtension forTreehuggersBy Jennifer Van Grove(Mashable!)Submitted at 8/3/2009 7:06:25 PM

As far as top-level domains (TLDs)a r e c o n c e r n e d , t h e I n t e r n e tCorporation for Assigned Names andNumbers ( ICANN) has full controlover whether or not we see newTLDs make it to the web. Most of usare pretty content with the ones wehave, like .com, .edu, .net, .org, butDot Eco is trying to muster upsupport and momentum for a newTLD: .eco.

The organization has partneredwith former Vice President Al Gore, the Sierra Club, and a number ofother notably green personalities andorganizations to create awareness fortheir .eco environmental initiative. The domains differentiating factor isthat 50% of profits generated bydomain registrations will be donatedto non-profits and environmentalcauses.

Dot Eco plans to apply for the .ecotop level domain in the hopes ofg iv ing non-pro f i t s f ree webaddresses, and allowing for-profits to

    highlight their green efforts with

their domain while supportingenvironmental init iatives withdomain fees. To help them makeheadway with ICANN, Dot Eco isasking you to lend your support fortheir domain campaign.

Arguments can be weighed for andagainst new top level domains.Theres certainly an active group ofpeople who believe that newextensions, like .eco, will onlycomplicate the web. But, ICANN is

actively pursuing opening theirgeneric top-level domains program(gTLDs), which could see a numberof new extensions get released in thewild. And while were not positivethe .eco domain will solve theworlds environmental issues, wecertainly see it as a potentiallypositive way to raise funds andsupport well-intentioned charitiesand non-profits.

PDFVue gets a new name, storage, tagsBy Josh Lowensohn(Webware.com)

    Submitted at 8/3/2009 12:24:00 PM

PDFVue, the online PDF viewingand editing tool, has a new name, anew look, and a handful of newfeatures.

We originally checked out theservice late last year and came awayimpressed with its handy Firefox add-on that let you read any PDF link inits viewer, and tools for filling outforms and annotating pages. Nowcalled DocQ, those things are mostlyunchanged. What's new, however, isthat you can now store, organize, andshare PDFs.

To help keep a handle on all yourfiles you can add tags as well asorganize them into "smart folders."These are named folders you candrag and drop your PDFs into. Youcan then filter the ones you want tosee, just by clicking on the foldername from the top menu. I couldn'tget the search to work, which is theonly way to make use of thesefolders and any tags you've assigned.

    DocQ's interface remains largely

unchanged since its PDFVue days. You can still view PDFs and makequick edits and annotations.(Credit:CNET)

Another new feature is that you candigitally sign documents. In DocQ'sintegrated editor you can placemul t ip le s igna tu res wi th in adocument, then send it off to one ormore recipients. Then, whenever theperson (or people) on the other endsigns, they can send it back to your

DocQ in-box. The folks on the otherend don't need to sign up for theservice to use it, since a special log-in is created from the invitation. Fornow, the signature feature can onlywork with one user, meaning eachperson you send it to is seeing onlytheir signature. However, coming intwo weeks will be a way to havemultiple people sign off on the samedocument.

For now, you can upload up to 10

PDFs at a time. Storage and file sizeare unlimited, although that will

eventually change when it becomes apaid service. There will then be capson how many files you're uploading, and how big they are. DocQ's owner,Docudesk, also plans to deeplyintegrate it into the rest of its PDF-editing software to let people uploadand share PDFs they've created.

I wouldn't recommend relying onDocQ for business just yet. I ran intoa handful of slowdowns where Icouldn't get back to my list of files. And without the search or tag sortingworking, i t would have beenproblematic if I had more files, andwanted to access one in short order.Still, two of the really great partsabout this service--editing andannotations--continued to work very, very well.
