SLIS ePortfolio Evidence from LIBR 287

Course: LIBR 287-14, Seminar in Information Science: iPad Implications and Applications

Semester: Fall 2010Instructors: Jeremy Kemp and Steve SloanCompetencies: areas E, G, and H for the

School of Library and Information Science at San José State University

Competency E

design, query and evaluate information retrieval systems

Page 4: LIBR 287: ePortfolio Presentation

The Importance of Information Retrieval Systems

Information retrieval systems are an integral part of how libraries and other information-providing entities perform their functions

In order to be an effective librarian or information professional, one must be able to effectively use such systems

Information retrieval systems can be improved and enhanced by information professionals with design experience

The process of designing and evaluating such systems enriches the process of learning to use them

Evidence for Competency E

Design: Project 1 I created a Web app for the

iPhone using HTML, CSS and JavaScript

My app consisted of a set of Web pages for a fictitious “Mobile Library”

The main menu page linked to pages that would be highly used by Mobile Library users, such as “My Account,” “Digital Books and Media,” and “Ask a Librarian”

The app constituted a simple information retrieval system, performing the functions of information storage, retrieval, and display

Evidence for Competency E (continued)

Query: Papers 1 and 2Papers 1 and 2 both

required researchIn conducting my research,

I utilized both online academic databases available through SJSU’s King Library and Google

Finding high quality sources required the use of effective search techniques, including choice of search terms, search limits, and selective browsing

Evidence for Competency E (continued)

Evaluate: Project 1As part of Project 1, we were asked to comment on

two of our classmates’ Web appsIn my comments to Silke and Robert, I evaluated

the design and effectiveness of their appsIn my evaluations, I drew on my knowledge of

usability principles and heuristics as well as my own experience

Page 8: LIBR 287: ePortfolio Presentation

Learning and Application

The projects and coursework I have selected as evidence of my mastery of competency E demonstrate both learning and application

Not only did I design a Web app, but I also created it and made it available for others in the course to use

Not only did I query various databases and search engines in conducting research for my two papers, but I also drew on my findings to create and sustain arguments and to evaluate ideas in the papers themselves

Not only did I evaluate my classmates’ Web apps, but in evaluating the initial design sketches for my own Web app, I drew on my knowledge of usability heuristics and principles of information organization in creating and implementing the final design

Competency G

understand the system of standards and methods used to control and create information structures and apply basic principles involved in the organization and representation of knowledge

Page 10: LIBR 287: ePortfolio Presentation

Standards of Control and Principles of Organization

Libraries and other information-providing entities rely on information structures to organize and represent knowledge and information

The effective organization and representation of information helps to ensure that libraries meet the needs and expectations of their users

Adherence to standards promotes efficiency, as users only have to learn the system once, as well as accuracy, consistency, clarity, accessibility, and quality control

Page 11: LIBR 287: ePortfolio Presentation

Evidence for Competency G

Understand the system of standards & methods used to control & create information structures: Project 1

Project 1 required the use of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create an information structure in the form of a Web app

HTML, CSS and JavaScript are the standards upon which the Web is built

Page 12: LIBR 287: ePortfolio Presentation

Evidence for Competency G (continued)

Apply basic principles involved in the organization & representation of knowledge: Project 1

In designing the main menu for my Web app, I created categories of information and services likely to be used by people on the go

The “Ask a Librarian” section was intended to include an A-Z index of frequently asked reference questions

The “Digital Books and Media” section was intended to link to the library’s digital collection, which would be catalogued and classified according to a specific system

Page 13: LIBR 287: ePortfolio Presentation

Learning and Application

The project I have selected as evidence of my mastery of competency G demonstrates both learning and application

Not only did I understand the necessity of using HTML, CSS and JavaScript to create a Web app, but I also utilized these standards to actually create one

Not only did I draw on basic principles in the organization and representation of knowledge in designing my Web app, but I also applied them in creating my main menu and organizing the content within the app’s various sections

Page 14: LIBR 287: ePortfolio Presentation

Competency H

demonstrate proficiency in the use of current information and communication technologies, and other related technologies, as they affect the resources and uses of libraries and other types of information providing entities

Page 15: LIBR 287: ePortfolio Presentation

Technology in Libraries

We live in an age of information and rapid technological advancements

Libraries and other information-providing entities are significantly impacted by technology

Libraries have historically collected information in a variety of formats and developed their collections according to the needs and desires of their users

Libraries have already implemented many types of technology and will continue to do so

Libraries are increasingly collecting and utilizing eBooks and mobile devices

Page 16: LIBR 287: ePortfolio Presentation

Evidence for Competency H

demonstrate proficiency in the use of current ICT, & other related technologies, as they affect the resources & uses of libraries & other types of information-providing entities: Project 2

I created an eBook in ePub format To create the ePub, I used

KompoZer for HTML editing and Sigil for eBook editing

The ePub could be loaded and read in Apple’s iBooks application on the iPad by loading it in iTunes and syncing iTunes with the iPad

The ePub could also be read on Adobe Digital Editions on a laptop or desktop PC

Page 17: LIBR 287: ePortfolio Presentation

Learning and Application

The project I have selected as evidence of my mastery of competency H demonstrates both learning and application

Prior to creating my eBook, I wrote a research paper about eBooks for Paper 2, exploring the history of eBooks and their impact upon libraries, publishers, writers and readers

In conducting my research for Paper 2, I learned a great deal about the various issues relating to eBooks, including their use in libraries

In creating my eBook for Project 2, I demonstrated my proficiency in the use of various technologies, including KompoZer, Sigil, and iTunes
