A note from our editor...

Summer has finally started, blue skies and toddler paddling pools. I’m not normally a fan of the heat but it feels like it’s rained every day for the past 10 months, so I have learnt to embrace the little bit of sunshine we get, albeit covered head to toe in sun factor 50.It’s been such a positive month, I feel I must share. In my spare time I do some voluntary work for my local food bank. A charity like others who rely on the kindness of strangers, but unlike most other charities they collect food rather than monetary donations. I and a few others set up our food bank stall in our local supermarket a few weeks ago, it was early on a Thursday morning so we really weren’t expecting much. Oh boy were we wrong, not a single person shunned us. Most stopped and asked how they could help. Within a few hours people had donated 10 trolley loads of food, and over 2 days 1 tonne of food was collected, all in that one supermarket. And every day since more and more food is being donated. We read every day in the newspapers of the horrors of the world, the negative, darker side to our society. But sometimes we need a reminder that it’s not all bad news, that there are good people out there willing to help, people who will donate with no thought of recompense. I for those few hours experienced first-hand the kindness and the generosity of the society that surrounds me, I felt so much pride I nearly burst.Enjoy the sunshine

The Maccabees are back with a new album, Marks To Prove It. Our editor Joy Lewis chatted to Hugo White the Maccabees guitarist, on his new album, touring in America and what it’s like to create an album in a band full of equals where everybody has equal say.

Hello how are you?Great, thanks for asking. I’m so tired, what day is it? We are all suffering from jet lag. But it’s good to be home and we’re about to start really promoting our new album, “Marks To Prove it”

Speaking of your latest album, it has been a three years since, “Given To The Wild,” is it a relief to be back?Yes, oh yes unbelievably so. It has taken 2 ½ years, with all of us working together in the same few rooms almost constantly, to create “Marks To Prove It” no holiday no break, it’s been kind of intense. People have been saying we’ve had a break but we haven’t, we have been working all this time on creating and making this latest album, but I really like it, I think it’s great. I like being in the studio, but the studio is quite intense sometimes, so now we can celebrate the songs and take them on tour.

What is it about the album that you like so much?It comes from one place that brings all our past albums together – we recorded it all in one place, like I said in just two rooms. The tracks are a reminder too of why we started the band, it’s an amalgamation experiences, and we are playing to our strengths. In the past we have embraced the electrical software side of producing music. But even though we did start that way for this album, we realised pretty quickly that we didn’t want to do that it that way anymore. So we went back to the beginning, we in a room as a band with our collective instruments no computers. I think we have created a cohesive album and it’s hopefully listenable in one piece, so yes I really like it.

In past interviews you said that you have had arguments in the writing process of the music – was it more of the same this time? What was the process this time?Yea that’s still a problem. You see it’s so difficult the way we write as a band, we all want to prove a point and it’s a strict democracy. It’s difficult and stressful but there is no other way around that for us. We are all very serious about what we do, we’re not 18 anymore we are not just making music for fun. This is it, this is our lives so we want it to be the best we can do. We are all so passionate our music, it takes so long to create a single track. Everyone has to agree that it’s brilliant and we are happy – but it is a slightly floored plan – we are never going to produce 3 albums a year – but we wouldn’t want to anyway.

Orland last year said that “success will buy us creative freedom” it’s now your 4th album, you are very successful - have you found that freedom now? Who or what was it that was holding your creativity in check?I feel like we have always done what we want, we create music that will please us and what we want to play live. In the past our albums have not all contained songs that are playable live, but this time around with our latest album every track is playable live – which was very intentional. Perhaps we have found more freedom as we have continued to create music. With the last album, we were worried that it wasn’t going to be well received, but it was, so we have more confidence now in the music we create.

Are you back from touring America now, notoriously difficult to ground to break? How did you find it?It was brilliant, we were over there supporting Mumford and Sons – every gig was the size of a festival, big stadiums that hold 20,000 people. It was a good gesture from the Mumford and Sons I think, giving us a hand to introduce us over in the states. It has worked well for us, because we had a really good reception and we there are plans now to do our own tour later this year, although actual dates haven’t been decided yet.

You came back off tour to perform Glastonbury this year – is the festival crowd your favourite to perform to or the smaller more intimate audiences? There is something magical about festivals, about having people stand in a field and listen to music together. I do like the smaller places to. Because we play to both huge and small crowds, we as a band have learned to make any situation work for us. From one day to the next the audience size can drastically change – especially when you are in America, you can go from playing to thousands and thousands on day and then the next do a small gig. I like both. Over the years we have learnt to create a show that encompasses our music in the best way so that to that any audience be it large or small can enjoy it and get the most out of it.

Are you doing a UK tour and more importantly from my point of view are you coming to Liverpool?Yes we are doing a U.K tour, I think that will be later on in the year. Again there are no firm dates planned yet, but Liverpool will be on the list. We can’t leave Liverpool out that’s for sure so yea we’ll be there.

egal Entertainments have a great family show to keep the kids entertained this summer as The St Helens

Theatre Royal Youth Section, The RTDA, present the smash hit musical Bugsy Malone; coming to St Helens Theatre Royal from Thu 27 – Sat 29 August.Bring the whole family to see this the pint-sized, pinstriped classic, the tongue-in-cheek tribute to the gangster films of the 1920's where two gangs comprised completely of children, square off in a 1920's rivalry of Capone-ian standards.Dandy Dan's gang has the upper hand since obtaining the "splurge" gun (a weapon that shoots whip cream). Now Fat Sam, who runs one of the most popular Speakeasy’s in town, and his bumbling buffoons are in real trouble! So, enter Bugsy Malone, a killer with the ladies and a one-time boxer, who is thrust not-so-willingly into the gangster limelight, when he becomes the last chance Fat Sam's gang has of surviving.Although all Bugsy really wants to do is spend time with his new love Blousey; but unfortunately he has also caught the eye of Sam’s girlfriend Tallulah – a broad who is not to be messed with!

More feMales wanted for football

FEMALES inspired by the England football team’s success at the Women’s World Cup are being urged to get involved in one of County FA’s Female Football programmes across Merseyside.

Female football is the fastest growing format of football in Merseyside. Liverpool County FA have over 170 female grassroots

football teams across Merseyside who have teams ranging from under 7s through to adult female, playing five a side to 11 against 11 at various indoor or outdoor football facilities.

Liverpool County FA have just completed the Merseyside Game Changer which included a complete review of female football in the area including school, grassroots, recreational football and the Female Talent Pathway.

Over 350 females aged from 5 years upwards were consulted by the County FA on what changes and developments could be made to improve female football for females of all ages and abilities. The overall findings from the Game Changer highlighted that females want to be treated the same as their male counterparts and be given the same opportunities to play football, access to better playing and training facilities and increase promotion/media coverage of the female game to help change the perception of the game and increase participation rates in Merseyside.

Playing a helping hand in changing the perception of female football are the four local

female players currently flying the flag for Merseyside in the Women’s World Cup in Canada - Fara Williams, Toni Duggan, Alex Greenwood and Jodie Taylor. Fara is an adopted Scouser, and has played football in Merseyside since 2004 with Everton Ladies and her current club Liverpool Ladies. Liverpool born Toni Duggan (Manchester City) and Alex Greenwood (Notts County) started their careers playing with Everton Ladies in their Centre of Excellence and they both progressed into the first team, and Jodie Taylor from Birkenhead (Portland Thorns) began playing the game with Tranmere Rovers Ladies and has played in America, Sweden and Australia.

Female Football in Merseyside has benefited from £30,000 of investment from various external funding agencies including the Football Foundation, Sport England and the People’s Postcode Trust during the 2014-15 season.

Anna Farrell, Football Development Officer for Liverpool County FA said, “Female Football is the fastest growing format of football in Merseyside and the achievements of the Lionness in Canada is only going to increase awareness and help us change perception of the game locally and nationally.”

“The FA has recently launched the #WeCanPlay which aims to canvass the support of 100,000 girls and parents as part of its drive to boost participation and change the way girls/parents view the game.”

“At Liverpool County FA we are working tirelessly to ensure that we cater for the needs and wants of our female community and ensure that we offer football for players of all ages, abilities, races, religions and disabilities.”

Councillor Tim Moore, Mayoral Lead for Sport, said: “The success of the England Lionesses at the World Cup could prove key to changing the perception of football and get the message across that it is a sport for both women and men.”

“It is fantastic that we have such a strong local contingent in the national squad and that is a reflection of our work with the FA to create fantastic facilities, which are used by leagues with players of all ages and abilities.”

What satisfied customers have to say about their Sefton New Directions experiences:

I would like to thank all the carers who’ve been so kind to me since I came out of hospital. They have encouraged me and made me feel that I’m really improving. They have been pleasant and it’s been a pleasure to know them. I think you are invaluable and I’m very grateful to you all.

Thank you to each and every one of you... you truly made a difference.

I can leave my son…knowing he is well looked after. I have total respect and a very high regard for the members of staff.

iverpool-based discount department store TJ Hughes continues its ambitious expansion programme with the opening of three new stores in October.

The retailer will return to Bootle, Oldham and Walsall with some 100,000ft2 of new store space. The openings will also create around 150 full and part time local jobs, application for which will be undertaken via Universal Job Match. Past shoppers can expect everything they know and love from TJ Hughes when they reopen, but they’ll find a cleaner, more modern store fit out and offering. And they’ll also be more big brands and bargains than ever, including the likes of Sony, Christy, Morphy Richards, Adidas, Levis, Clinique, L’Oréal, Chanel and Elizabeth Arden. Liverpool and Oldham stores will also offer a wide selection of food and drink at TJ’s Café – which will serve breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea daily. These new stores will take TJ’s nationwide tally up to 17. Bootle is a particularly important location for the retailer as it is another outlet back in business in its Merseyside heartland – reaffirming its position as a key department store destination for the region’s savviest shoppers.

TJ HUGHES TO OPEN THREE

STORES IN FOUR WEEKS

Shopping just got better...

They set the scene for TJ Hughes’ nationwide growth plans – targeted at 60 future sites - as it ramps up its competition to reclaim its prominence and take on other established discount retailers. And it’s a sector on the rise. Fuelled by the financial crisis, consumers are now proud to shop in discount stores. Picking up big brands at massively discounted prices is seen as a badge of honour – a clear display of being financially savvy. Anil Juneja, Managing Director of TJ Hughes, said: “We are absolutely delighted to re-open stores in these three locations - but with a better offering and shopping experience than ever. “We’re embarking upon a large-scale expansion programme. Our ultimate aim is to return to many of the 55 towns where we’ve previously had stores and are lucky enough to still have such a loyal customer base. We’re working hard to identify new store opportunities and we have good agents on the ground to keep us well informed. It’s all about getting the right site.”

LITTLE MIX

It’s nice to be here, the people are awesome and of course there’s a heavy musical influence from Liverpool. I also like American soul, ‘50s style, I like the classic look, I like to study architecture as well as the people and the music. It’s incredible to think that I started doing small acoustic guitar gigs and have ended up here. My rider is always 10 white pairs of cotton socks, I haven’t got them today and I am a little bit agitated about it (joke).

JOHN NEWMAN

It’s great to be back in Liverpool playing at the arena, we’re very excited. We are really superstitious before we go on stage and always have a little routine and kiss each other on the cheeks. It’s really important. Our style today is very much our own, it’s not something that we can wear walking down the street, it’s a little bit cheeky but fun and we like to play around. We’re really looking forward to the new series of the X Factor, the new judges are really young and bringing something fresh and exciting, we can’t wait to watch it!

TAIO CRUZ

RIXTON

We’ve been in Liverpool One all day, have loved shopping and we did the Beatles museum and the Cavern and then went to Hard Days Night Hotel so we’ve done the tour! What’s the strangest thing a fan has given us? I got a wedding album with my head on the groom and this girl’s head on all the bridal pictures. It was a full album, bit creepy.

ALESHA DIXON

I never expected Waves to be such a massive hit. The first bars on that came out of the first guitar I bought and I did not see it coming. I am looking forward to getting on stage and returning the love that my fans have given me.

BAY TV'sLIFESTYLE MONTHLY’S NEW MONTHLY COLUMNISTS BAY TV’S JAY AND ELLIE; WILL BE KEEPING US UP TO DATE WITH ALL THE ENTERTAINMENT AND MUSICAL HAPPENINGS IN AND AROUND LIVERPOOL.

Jay and Ellie

Every Sunday night from 10 on Juice you can hear us building up to LIMF 2015, we get to showcase local talent playing the

festival and get the area excited for the stars that will be on stage. So it's only right we get you in the mood too...

It is the biggest free music festival in Europe! That is huge...and it's right here in our city.

The Liverpool International Music Festival is back at the end of the month bigger and better than ever before, filling Sefton Park with all genres of music and artists from all over the planet.

Saturday is all about Basement Jax, the dance legends headline the central stage on Saturday 29th. With tunes such as Romeo, Red Alert, Where's Your Head At and Good Luck, you can't go wrong. We will 110% be there raving with our glow sticks. To get you in the mood for Basement Jax don't miss the Juice weekend boys, Anton Powers, Liam Hincks & Ian Longo, bringing you live sets and a free rave from the central stage.

Sunday 30th is the LIMF Summer Jam headlined by RnB star Labrinth. It's a full day of classy pop with Alesha Dixon, Katy B and local lads MIC Lowry providing the fun. If you have never seen MIC Lowry live you need to get there - a real vocal harmony group, fresh from performing at Glastonbury and touring with Boyz to Men, these lads are smashing it!

On Monday 31st it's all about Echo & The Bunneymen. These rock legends have been producing amazing music since 1978 and are

joining forces with the Liverpool Philharmonic orchestra to celebrate 175 years of the Phil. This will be a one off spectacular concert containing 31 years of music from one of the city's most loved bands.

Other Liverpool greats on the bill across the weekend include 90's indie band Space - imagine Neighbourhood and Female of The Species live! The Real Thing are also back on stage in their hometown as are the Tea Street Band, who have made a name for themselves as one of the areas most exciting, fun and energetic bands. Well worth a watch.

New local talent will also be showcased. You have to go see Louis Berry - at just 23 he is tipped to be one of the countries biggest rock n roll stars. Also local Americana singer Rosenblume, Soulstress Roxanne Jones and RnB newcomer Merki Waters are all on our LIMF must see list. As well as that the LIMF Academy will be taking over the palm house and once again presenting the next generation of local musicians to you.

Of course we will be there too filming for The Guide on Bay TV. You can see 3 special shows looking back at each day's entertainment. We will also be live on Juice Liverpool bringing you all of the goings on from the biggest music event in the city. See you there.

JUMP TO IT

Jumpsuits and playsuits have been a wardrobe staple for a few years now. Team with high heels or a pair of pumps, the outfits that we wore as toddlers are now so grown up they are the equivalent of the LBD. Except this fashion must have comes in every colour of the rainbow, and in every pattern under the sun. It's not just for runway models with mile long legs either, every shape size and age can wear a jumpsuit. Find the style that suits your figure and go for it.

ee Kelly’s LHK Productions company, create amazing pantomimes. Those pantomimes which are performed at the Epstein every year are so

good, they have become synonymous with Christmas in Liverpool, well that and the big tree on Church Street. In July LHK Productions celebrated 10 years, and the natch choice to host the party was one of our cities most unique venues, Circo. Merging LHK Productions with an event with Lifestyle Monthly matriarch Amanda Moss at the helm was only ever going to result in a fabulous evening to be had by all. However, it exceeded everyone’s expectations. Except perhaps if you’re Calum Best, who was charmed* by Amanda and her lovely lady friends**. *harrassed **gang of over excited women.

What LHK PRODUCTIONS 10TH BIRTHDAY PARTY

When THURSDAY 9TH JULY Where CIRCOLMany celebs were spotted, many, many laughs were had, and many, many, many (I could go on) mojitos were drank. *headache but worth it*. You may have seen photos from the event plastered all over social media. If so - please make allowances. It’s not often any of us ladies here at Lifestyle Monthly get a night off from our broods.

On that note, I’d like to leave you with my do’s and don’ts for a Mum’s Night Out.

•Do alternate alcoholic drinks with soft drinks

•Don't drink everything you can get your hands on as soon as you get to the bar

•Do act responsibly at all times, and remember the internet exists so there will be evidence of any debauchery

•Don't lose control of all your inhibitions before 10pm, even if that is your usual bedtime

•Do be a classy sex Goddess

•Don't be a wanton mess

•Do brush your teeth and remember to remove your make up before bed

•Don't look and smell like a monster in the morning. This may cause lasting damage to your children

Actually, forget all the do’s. Except the teeth and make up part. As long as you enjoy yourself, who cares what you do. As long as you’re not a divvy.32

I am so excited that the pantomime has been announced at the Liverpool Empire this year. It is Dick Whittington with our star Sally Linsey, I am thrilled to say that I was instrumental in bringing her to star for the first time ever in panto. Of course lovely Leanne Campbell is with us too, as it wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t work together every Christmas. We have a great cast and the advance bookings are staggering.

We all know that summer can be a stressful time, organising trips for the family, a summer holiday, arranging alternate care for the children, but for those going through a relationship breakdown, the summer period can be no fun at all.

Jenniffer Brunt, Partner, Head of Family Law and Collaborative Lawyer at Lees Solicitors provides her top tips to surviving the summer holidays:• Plan ahead – If contact between your ex and the children is approaching, plan ahead; where, when and what time, contact will occur. Have a set plan in place prior to the summer holidays to avoid undue stress and pressure. • Preparation – If your children are sharing summer holidays between yourself and your ex, talk to your children and explain that they will have two holidays, make it exciting for them with the reassurance that the holidays will still be special for them. • Enjoy yourself – Who said that you can’t have fun over the summer break despite an unfortunate relationship breakdown? Remember, a relationship

Moisture your face and prime.

Use long lasting foundation, or a concealer palette for this look.

Your highlighter contour needs to be at least 2/3 shades lighter than your natural base tone. With a foundation brush go right under the eyes and make a long triangle to your nose. Across the fore head (between the eyebrows and above across the eyebrows), your chin and Cupid's bow. This draws light to all the areas of the face you want to bring out.

For the darkening sections you need at least 2/3 shades darker than your skin tone. Do a line

about 1cm wide, around your forehead hair line, around your whole face including jaw line, underchin and across each cheek bone (smile to get these areas), as symmetrical as you can, but note no ones face is 100% symmetrical. We're all unique beauties!Thin line down each side of the nose and across the tip. These are the natural shadows of your face you want to deepen and bring shadows, the opposite of highlighting. To appear smaller and more defined.

Use a cleaned off foundation brush to buff out the high lighter to fill in any gaps not in the

contour lines, add more highlighter if needed to fill in.

Blend the dark contour then into the light areas, going inwards of the face, in sections.

Cheek bones need to be blended upwards.

Use a light setting power on the light sections, and a dark setting power on the dark lines.

Go down the bridge of the nose with a lighter highlighter again, to add more definition,

under eyebrows, in the corners of the eyes, cheek bones (above the dark contour) and on Cupid's bow.

Lifestyle’s nightlife columinst...

MARTINQUIRK

eighthwonder

Liverpool's reputation as a happening place to come for a night out could hardly receive a more ringing endorsement than

the one it got recently by being included in the latest book by those highly respected folk at Rough Guide. Named after the organisation’s wonderful trading slogan, 'Make The Most Of Your Time On Earth', the seasoned travel writers at the world famous Penguin Random House publication not only include the many and various nocturnal delights of our fair city in their new book, but, in an ‘ultimate bucket list Top 50’, which they put together in order to publicise its release on social media and around the web, they actually place going for a night out in Liverpool, quite incredibly, at number three in the list of all the things that you could do in this big wide wonderful world. Something which might be worth bearing in mind the next time you find yourself in the queue for a haggis kebab at The Lobster Pot or shivering outside the bombed out beauty of St Luke's waiting for your Delta to roll up.

What is almost as surprising as finding Liverpool’s nightlife ranked like this, above trips to such exalted locations as the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal and Mount Kilimanjaro, is that the brief description given of Liverpool’s main night-time attractions doesn't even mention The Beatles. Neither does it mention Mathew Street, Albert Dock, Concert Square or the increasingly popular Hope Street. Instead it points visitors towards the many groovy drinking establishments of Seel Street and the booming Baltic Triangle district, south of the city centre. The tributes don’t stop there, either, since both the book and the accompanying bucket list also recommend Liverpool not just as a place to visit for a bevy and a boogie. Readers are urged to do no less than to come and live here too, because …. ‘It’s that good.’ But, before we all get too carried away, it's worth noting that also included in the book are seeing the Blackpool illuminations by bus and drinking beer in Belgium. Oh well.

By far the most beautiful headphones on the market, and being a Bang and Olufsen product they have a price

tag to match. But are they worth it? Oh yes, the sound quality is crystal clear, and they are loaded with the latest features, such as noise cancelling, where you can enjoy the music in silence or you can choose to let the hubbub of the outside world in. As for the styling the headband is metal and leather with soft leather cushioned ear cuffs that make them super comfortable to wear even for long periods. It has been said that once you go Bang and Olufsen you never go back, I am inclined to agree.

The H Wireless headset uses best-in-class technology to deliver a smooth, lag-free wireless performance unlike any other. With a list of features that are as long as your arm this is a seriously high end product

aimed specifically at gamers. The audio quality is phenomenal for both games and music alike, with no lag whatsoever. No, this headset is not to venture out on the street in, but if you want excellent audio coupled with cutting edge performance while sat in your living room at home these are worth their weight in gold.

These very trendy Jabra Move wireless headphones are built with high quality stainless steel, making them tough enough to go out in and light enough that a 5k run is easily doable, especially as the cushioned headband keeps them firmly in place. There is a little sound leakage,

however the sound quality is so good it more than makes up for it. The battery lasted for 11 hours and they charge up very quickly too. The design of the headphones is exciting and they come in a choice of colours, cobalt, coal and cayenne.

W I R E L E S S H E A D P H O N E SWireless Headphones have been on the market for a while now, so our editor Joy Lewis decided to ditch the wires, turn on the Bluetooth and see what all the fuss is about

Hesh 2 wireless headphones are the latest incarnation of the super cool Skullcandy brand. Initially they do feel a little heavy, however, the soft touch leather padding on the ear cuff makes them very comfortable to wear. The sound quality is great and offers more than decent clarity, especially when listening to heavy bass and the battery life lasts for at least 14 hours. The integrated three-button remote works well and is easy to operate by feel.

These sleek matt black on-ear headphones have been designed with budget in mind. But don’t let the price fool you, the sound quality is pretty good, they light enough to go to the gym in and are super easy to pair up with a smart

phone. The battery lasts for 5 hours and the noise leakage was minimal.

AU isn’t just another new restaurant in Liverpool that sells terrific burgers and

succulent steak. This place stands out from the rest, and it stands with a passion and vibrancy to the décor, food and service that is both sophisticated and fun.For the décor, think Barbarella landing in a spring country meadow mashed with a cosmopolitan flair. Yet it’s surprisingly comfortable even with its wipe clean white cushion couches. The seating area has an intimate feel – even though it’s bright and airy. And the table wear, right down to the stainless steel chilled container for tap water, is of the highest quality, but while you are sipping your tap water from a tumbler that has probably cost a fortune, you can enjoy the plastic clouds that are hanging above the bar that sway gently in the wind of the open door. In short, CAU décor offers extreme contrasts, but rather than having a jarring unsettling effect, it’s rather calming with its grass walls and moveable mood lighting; and

C A URestaurant Review by Joy Lewis

never are you short of something to marvel over. The food, unlike the décor is a very serious affair. The staff offer a first class service. The menu is explained in detail, from where the meat came from, which incidentally is delivered direct from Argentina. And if you need it, they also offer friendly advice and guidance on choices. I asked for recommendations of what my husband and I should try – because after only a few minutes I realised that all the staff are experts on the food they serve. For starters we were steered towards the salt & pepper squid, which is topped with chilli and spring onion, with chipotle mayo, and the Yerba-smoked beef which is smoked the Argentinian way, and dressed in soy and wasabi. We shared the starters between us, they were cooked to absolute perfection. The squid alone is worth booking a table for. For main we both had the Latin burger, which comes dressed with chimichurri mayo, jalapeños, guacamole, and topped with blistered peppers and fresh avocado. Epic is the best way to describe this king among burgers. For dessert we split a plate of churros, Argentinian style doughnuts. Lightly dusted with cinnamon sugar and served traditionally with dulce de leche. Perfect for a sweet tooth such as my own and a perfect ending to an absolutely delicious meal.

So, to be clear. Yes I recommend CAU, infact you would be doing your inner gastro self a disservice if you don’t book yourself a table there soon.

Baywatch legend David Hasselhoff’s new spoof series, Hoff the Record, plays on the surreal nature of his everyday life. We spoke to the star about stepping into the world of semi-improvised comedy.

So what’s Hoff the Record all about? We try to turn my life into a comedy because nobody would believe what’s really going on! Hoff the Record kind of plays with your emotions of whether this truly is David Hasselhoff’s life or not - a lot of it really is true and we just magnified it and had a lot of fun.

Who did you enjoy pranking on set?Well I wind up my girlfriend all the time, it’s really quite easy to do. I have been known to wind up my assistant too – one day of filming for example, the phone rang right in the middle of a scene and it was my assistant. I was doing a scene with Dieter, my illegitimate German son on the show, so I said, ‘there’s a German in my room, he’s saying he’s my son!’ The assistant was saying, ‘Get him out of there right away!’ I said, ‘I’m trying to!’ and then Dieter is going, [heavy German accent] ‘who is that?’ and we kept on playing it. My assistant was freaking out getting in a car to try and save me! In real life, what’s the strangest thing you’ve asked an assistant to do for you? When you’re an assistant your job is 24/7... A lot of the time I have one press agent to keep me in the press and one press agent to get me out of the press! Why do you attract such media attention? What I realise is that I’m so famous that no matter what I do, I’m gonna get press outof it. When I had some bad press in the past I was playing Roger DeBris in The Producers, which Mel Brooks wrote and produced. He’s one of the greatest comedic geniuses of our time and he called me and I said ‘hey sorry for all the press’ and he said, ‘we’re sold out! Do me a favour and go out and do that again tonight and for the next ten weeks!’ What moment or scenario from your life would you have liked to include from your life for Hoff the Record that didn’t make the cut this time?I went into rehab when I was 50 and I have so many amazing stories - I wanted to do a show called Treatment and Recovery! It’s funny, everyone was like, ok we’re hereto get better and to figure out what’s wrong but there are so many scams, so many different things… opening up a

closet door and your roommate falling out with a thousand beers around him. We’re actually doing that in our second series because there are so many weird, tragic situations that you can find a little bit of humour in. If you follow me round with a camera for 3 or 4 days you’re going to have a story for an episode.

iverpool’s port is thriving and the skyline along the docks often features incredible ships. On

an extremely drizzly day last month, P&O’s flagship cruise liner, Brittania, rolled into our city on her grand tour of the British Isles. We were fortunate to be invited onboard this majestic giant to spend the day sampling some of its activities and restaurants. With 17 floors and room for 5000 guests, this stylish ship takes a while to navigate, but there was always staff on hand to help steer us in the direction we wanted to. As a veteran cruiser, I expect narrow corridors but was particularly impressed by the wide and spacious walkways. At almost every turn was a restaurant or coffee shop, even a Costa on board and with 13 to choose from there is something to suit every palate. I felt privileged to be invited to take part in The Cookery Club, which was superbly equipped and personally overseen by James Martin - who tweeted me when I got busy on social media to show off the first raspberry meringue soufflé I have ever made. (It rose!) At just four months old, Brittania may be the baby of the P&0 fleet, but it’s also their biggest ship. Her decor is designed by one of the world’s leading interior designers and it felt like we were in a boutique hotel, I had to remind myself that we were indeed on water by frequently looking out of one of the vast windows. What is interesting to note is that P&O cater for British tastes, there is a bar with 70 different types of beer and a gin bar holding 40 different varieties. You would need a month’s cruise to get through them all! We had lunch in The Glass House, where every

course comes with the option of a different glass of wine expertly chosen by Ollie Smith. It was an elegant bistro and I had my signature dish, steak and chips, cooked to absolute perfection, with a peppercorn sauce. And then it was onto the enormous onboard spa to experience a mini massage using one of my favourite products, Elemis. Some people’s concerns about cruising is confinement of space but you certainly don’t need to worry about that on board Brittania. Everything is state of the art, from the service, to the theatre and entertainment programmes, to the restaurants, childcare (yes they are child friendly, they even have their own teen deck!) and everything in between. You can throw yourself into all the entertainment programmes or simply sit and read a book, cruising is at whatever pace you wish to take. My only disappointment on the day was for the guests who disembarked to visit our glorious city, which was one of the wettest and greyest of the summer so far and thus prevented a firework display as they sailed off to another destination. As I headed off home, I was slightly envious of the cruisers who were carrying on their luxury trip, I didn’t want to get off!

Two rival football cities have put their pitch differences apart to help raise awareness of fostering and adoption. Former England captain and Liverpool legend Mark Wright has teamed up with Salford City Council and red and blue players from Liverpool and Manchester to help recruit new foster carers. of our internal dialogue, we can turn it to our advantage.

What would be better from a self esteem point of view is if we can get our mind not to accuse us of anything, but to positively support us? Everyone of us has the ability to be and do whatever we chose, however with our minds working against us it can be a very difficult journey.

Try an exercise. Practice noticing every time you use one of these demanding statements; MUST DO, HAVE TO, GOT TO, NEED TO. This first step in allowing you to recognise that leads to your mind Accusing you. So, NOTICE over the coming hours, days and weeks then STOP. STOP the process. Then start to replace those demanding statements with positive uplifting words. Any individual can do this with practice, and once achieved anything is possible. With this technique you can elevate yourself to fabulous heights, fabulous heights that will allow you to accept how amazing and great you really are and to truly feel good about YOU.Part 2 of self esteem REPLACE will come through in Septembers magazine, however if you require support or questions answering get it in touch via, email [email protected] or follow me on twitter @dasaladarren

self esteem

he last time I wrote an article on self esteem I had just arrived back from a trip around Asia. Some 4 years on, just before I head out for a new Asian adventure, I

have written another article on self esteem.Self esteem is a subject that people ask me about on a regular basis, the how-to of feeling good about yourself. Well, as the title suggests Self Esteem is learning how to esteem yourself. You can do this whenever and wherever you chose. In this article we will look at how and when our mind works against us. Which in turn damages how we feel about ourselves; and look at what we can do to change it. We set such high expectations of ourselves in the Western Hemisphere, the things we should own, the house we should live in, the job we should have, the partner we should meet and the money we should earn. We are told continuously to move toward bigger and better ownership and achievement. Whilst I am a massive advocate of progress, what we do to our esteem in the pursuit of progress if worth looking at. Desiring things in my opinion is less damaging than HAVING to have them.We know we have lots to be thankful for and feel good about, and yet at we don’t always feel this way, at times our minds work against us, that’s right against us. We use words in our minds like “I MUST, I SHOULD, I NEED, I’VE GOT TO”. Whilst we may feel we want to get things done we don’t HAVE to do anything and when we use these words, these Demanding words, our minds respond in our subconscious with Accusational statements . Let me give you an example to better explain. Something doesn’t go the way we want or expect, so we say” I MUST TRY HARDER.” Our mind offers up a response and it says something like “because if you don’t.............................then you’re not good enough! You’re not committed, You’re not taking things seriously. Your mind is accusing you of these things in response to your Demanding Statements and its Responses in the most part is accusational. This is quite heavy stuff, however once we start to understand the power

CRAIG phillips- DIY-Hello Lifestyle Readers,

It’s been another busy month for me with plenty of news to report. I even had chance to get away for a short break in Turkey with my sister which was fantastic.

Back at home, I completed the autumn/winter catalogue shoot with Silverline, showing off their excellent range of products. Look out for that in the coming months but in the meantime head over to silverlinetools.com to see all their current offering.

I joined over 3500 other riders for this year’s Liverpool Chester Liverpool bike ride – a really fantastic ride and well worth doing if you get the chance. The event raises vital funds for the Claire House Children’s Hospice, which makes a huge difference to the lives of terminally ill children and their families.

I also hosted The Children Trust’s annual Supercar Event at Dunsfold Park, Cranleigh – the course made famous by BBC’s Top Gear. With fun for all the family and plenty to enjoy for petrolheads like myself, it was a real pleasure to be involved.

Finally, I’m pleased to announce that I’ve recently filmed an episode of Pointless Celebrities, a show I’ve always been a fan of! I’ll won’t tell you how I get on but make sure to look out for it airing in the near future! I’ve also included a picture of me with hosts Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman.

That’s about everything from me this month my friends. I hope you’re all enjoying the summer and let’s hope we all have some warmer weather to look forward to!

Petrol Hedge Trimmer•

By using a hedge trimmer about 3 or 4 times a year you can start to contain their shape and size to look presentable all year round.

Before purchasing a hedge trimmer consider how many hedges you have and what your needs are. Hedges are not all the same – there are lots of different types, some have thicker and tougher branches than others and some need cutting more often than others to keep tidy.

There are lots of different hedge trimmer’s available, electric ones, cordless ones, extendable ones, telescopic ones and petrol ones which is what I have decided to use today.

It has a fuel cap and small tank, you carefully need to fill it with petrol according to the instructions and then make sure you have all your personal protective equipment on before you start up the engine. Petrol hedge trimmers don’t have any power cords so the benefit of them is that you can walk easily to tackle hedges through all parts of your property.

Start off at the front lower parts of your garden hedges; glide the trimmer up and down. This will allow you to get the stepladder closer and safer to the bushes. Always take extra care when using any garden tool or power tool on ladders. Now you can get closer to the main bush, it will allow you to start trimming away the top getting it as flush as possible.

Never start cutting deep into the bush always take it off in small sections at a time swaying it left to right. Always remember take a small bit off because you can cut too much off and effect the bushes re-growth and lifespan.

augustIt’s the summer holidays! Whoop, I absolutely

relish this time of year, the thought of lazy, long days, no rush for the school run, endless packed

lunches to prepare, no school uniforms to fold. I love spending time with my children, I love talking to them, fooling around with them and actually getting to know them as they develop into young adults.

I dont’ understand other parents who dread the holidays, who complain about having to actually look after their own children during the holidays.Heaven forbid! Excuse me for pointing out the obvious but school is not a complimentary babysitting service and I shudder at the thought of making lessons compulsory until 5pm, as was proposed by MPs recently.

It appalls me that parents get onto social media to count down the days until term time starts. Why on earth did you have children in the first place? If the idea of actually looking after your own children fills you with dread then there are endless activity schemes available but then of course these parents will no doubt be complaining about the cost of those too.

We live in an age of convenience when there is usually a solution to every situation. I daren’t say “problem” because children are not problems unless you turn them into one.

How do you think they feel when they overhear you moan to your friends that you can’t wait for them to go back to school? It’s horrible to think that children up and down the country are made to feel in the way for being at home at a time when it should be the happiest and most carefree time of their lives.

For me, I will be spilling out the paints and paintbrushes and let them repaint the decking, we shall walk to the park and have barbecues, we shall watch videos, catch a bus to somewhere new and most of all, spend time together. It doesn’t matter if they are bored at home, learning to channel their imagination is important for their development.

My children range from kindergarten age to teenagers and I know that this time has gone in a blink of an eye. I want to cherish every moment with them before they flee the nest. Let’s not remember that being a parent is a blessing and a privilege. They only need to feel loved, to be fed and watered and feel secure. They do not need 24 hour entertainment or a bottomless purse to keep them going through the summer holidays. They want my time and attention and surely that is invaluable?. It doesn’t cost the world to be a good parent.

Stay stylish,
