My Mother Don’t Pratice What She Preach

Send your questions to [email protected] and aresponse will be provided

Dear Koren,I am 17 years old and my mother does not want me

to get a tattoo but she is dating a younger man and gother ears pierced with two more holes and I’m sure she isdoing it to keep him because he is about 28 or some-thing and mommy is 42. If I am the young one, don’t youthink it is unfair that she should be able to do things tolook better and I have to live like the old woman? I knowyou will probably take her side anyway, but I find thatadults don’t like to practice what they preach.–SMH

Dear Daughter,

While you are right that in many cases adults do not

practice what they preach, this situation does not sound

like that. You are 17 years old and still under the care of

your mother. She has a right to prohibit you from doing

things if it is inappropriate or you are not ready for it.

How will a tattoo enhance who you are? What messages

do you send as a school child with a tattoo? Have you

considered the high infection rate from the use of dirty

needles to mark the skin? Bear in mind, that the cost to

remove a tattoo is way more than the cost to put it on as

removal requires laser treatment.

Your mother is an adult and can pierce her ears

because she is responsible for herself. If it makes her

look better, great, but

we can’t assume that

it is to keep a younger

man. Not getting a

tattoo does not mean

that you are living like

an old woman. There

are so many joys of youth – you can dress nicely, wear a

smile, develop a positive attitude, take your education

seriously and make great friendships.

Are you bothered by the age of your mother’s

boyfriend? It sounds like that is a concern for you.

Generally speaking, there is no set pattern for how adults

become attracted to each other but if you feel uncom-

fortable with him or them together, then you can talk to

her; however, you must understand that unless he is in

any way harming you, she does not have any obligation

to end the relationship.

I suggest you maintain a good relationship with

your mom and hang in there. When you hit the age of

adulthood and you are responsible for yourself, you will

find that some of the very same things she disapproved

of are things you don’t want to do anyway.

6Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

One of the most tragic hurricanes to ever befall the

British Virgin Islands happened 145 years ago. The year

was 1867. My great-great grandfather, Henry Creque,

was 9 years old. His parents and six siblings were hud-

dled together for safety in a cramped, two-roomed cot-

tage across the street from the Methodist Church in

Anegada’s Settlement. Henry’s father, John Bedford

Creque, or “the old man” as he was locally known, could

tell that the weather was changing and something omi-

nous was brewing but could not foresee the destruction

to come.

Tuesday, October 29, 1867, would prove to be a day

they would never forget. As the wind intensified, a

strong feeling of doom overtook them. Could it be that a

late brewing hurricane had come to visit?

Just 30 miles southwest, the RMS Rhone, a Royal

Mail Steam Packet ship, was refueling at a temporary

coaling station in Great Harbour, Peter Island, while ren-

dezvousing with the RMS Conway. As the barometer

began to drop and the dark clouds quickly blanketed the

sky, Captain Wooley, of the RMS Rhone, secured his ves-

sel in the bay and lay in wait for what he thought was just

a northerly brewing.

After taking a good beating by the surprisingly hur-

ricane strength winds, he decided to make a run for it

during the quiet eye of the storm. After accepting some

of the passengers from the RMS Conway to his “unsink-

able” Rhone, both ships made for the safe harbor of

Road Town. Unfortunately, the swirling hurricane

returned from the opposite direction with double its fury

and intensity. The Rhone was caught. Her heavy, iron

anchor lodged around an unforgiving coral head. The

Captain must have screamed, “Cut her loose!” as today,

the anchor chain can still be found on the harbor floor.

Immediately after bounding free, without her chains,

she made for the open sea to take her chances there.

Unfortunately, as we now know, the shifting winds

pushed her 310-foot metal frame onto Black Rock Point,

just off Salt Island, where her shattered hull rests today.

All passengers, including Captain Wooley, were lost,

save for 23 crewmen. It would be a story my ancestors

spoke of for many generations.

On November 12, 1867, Sir Arthur Rumbold,

Governor-in-Chief, of the island, wrote to His Excellency

in Antigua with the sad details of the loss of life and

property. “Anegada, he said, has escaped with little or

no damage and forms an exception to this tale of woe.”

I sometimes wonder what would have happened had

Anegada been in the eye of the storm? Surely, my great-

great grandfather would not have survived…. nor would

I, or any of his plethora of descendants.

Cummings Ready To Try Her Hand At Talk Show For E!Is Whitney Cummings try-

ing to take over the world?

Just a couple of years

ago, she was a cult stand-

up comic best known in TV

terms for her appearances

on Chelsea Lately and a

series of Comedy Central

Roasts.

Last year, however, the 30-year-old Cummings

started to diversify in a big way, co-creating with

Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City) the hit CBS sit-

com 2 Broke Girls, on which she continues to produce

and write, as well as creating, executive producing and

starring on her own NBC sitcom, Whitney, which recent-

ly started its second season.

On Wednesday, Nov. 28, Cummings takes on a

third project, Love You, Mean It With WhitneyCummings, a weekly half-hour talk show on E!

Entertainment Television, which the channel is pairing

with its hit Joel McHale snarkfest, The Soup.

How in the world is she going to keep all these

balls in the air?

“Here’s the loophole: I haven’t actually done this

yet, so it has actually to be proven that I can do all three

of these shows and survive it,” Cummings says. “We’ll

see, but frankly, I’m not entirely confident that I’ll live

through it. What I am most OCD and detail-oriented

about is in finding the right staff and writers to choose,

and that’s what I am putting a ton of energy into right

now so I know that I have a great team around me.”

It helps, too, that Cummings’ star has risen to the

point that she’s learned to trust her instincts now

instead of second-guessing herself all the time. So

even though Cummings is, in a sense, venturing onto

the same turf as close friend and mentor Chelsea

Handler with this new E! series, the two shows actually

will be quite different, Cummings says.

“I’m going to be doing my show sober, so there’s a

difference — at least for the first couple of months,”

she cracks. “It’s also a little bit different formatwise.

Chelsea has a very signature format. She has three

comics on, and then she has a guest. Because she gets

such big celebrity guests, I think I’m going to try to do

more of a variety show format. It’s a little weirder, to be

honest.

“I’ll have kind of an opening monologue, but

where she will talk about, like, six topics for two min-

utes apiece, I’m going to go more in depth in my topics.

I’m a little more obsessive and annoying in terms of

how I like to pick things apart. Chelsea likes to just

move on, while I like to overthink, so this new format

will reflect that.”

Cummings says she expects to be more deferen-

tial to her guests than Handler often is.

“Chelsea does not suffer fools. I do,” she says,

laughing. “Just hang out with me and my friends some-

times. I not only suffer fools, I love fools. I aspire to

have the indifference that Chelsea has. I’m not quite as

self-assured or as stable emotionally as Chelsea is. I

need people to like and approve of me much more than

she does.”

Joining Cummings as a sidekick on the show is

Julian McCullough, another stand-up comic.

Breezy and off-beat, Safety Not Guaranteed is in the

vein of quirky indie films like Little Miss Sunshine, which

put a dysfunctional family together on a road trip with

unforeseen and wry consequences.

Instead of family members, Safety Not Guaranteedthrows together a disparate group of reporters for a

Seattle lifestyle magazine. Jeff, a 30-something writer,

has spotted an intriguing classified ad: “Wanted:

Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. I

have only done this once before. Must bring your own

weapons. SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED” – and wants to

investigate.

With the help of two misfit magazine interns, Darius

(Aubrey Plaza) and Arnau (Karan Soni), the team piles

into a car and sets off for the small town of Ocean View

Washington, to learn more. Here they discover Kenneth

(Mark Duplass), a grocery store clerk, prone to fits of

paranoia and time travel fantasies, who is tolerated by

his fellow-employees with shoulder shrugging resigna-

tion.

Prompted by the womanizing Jeff, who is more

interested in looking up a former high school flame than

researching the story, Darius volunteers to be Kevin’s fel-

low time traveler.

The shy and self-

deprecating Darius

soon recognizes in

Kenneth, the dorky

guy in high school

who never fully fit

in, a kindred spirit.

In going back in

time, his goal is not

to travel to some exotic era centuries ago, but to return

to 2001 in order to save a girl he had a high school crush

on from a fatal accident.

The movie takes on a number of subplots that keep

the film moving in some unexpected directions. Darius

and Kenneth pull off a heist of high tech equipment from

a classified facility as two government agents lurk in the

background. Jeff, the wisecracking lothario, takes Arnau,

an ultra serious Indian biology student, under his wing,

teaching him how to loosen up and meet girls; in turn,

Jeff’s former girlfriend, who is approaching middle age

and is at first a disappointment, teaches him that rela-

tionships can be more than skin deep.

By Dean “The Sportsman” GreenawayBy Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

Across the globe, there are numerous organized

runs and walks for various causes that attract thousands

of participants, who give their support to these events in

many ways.

I was delighted to see that we have finally moved

towards this worldwide trend.

It was just three years ago, that the annual

Highland Spring College Classic Series turned one of its

five races into an annual benefit event and introduced

the “Race for a Cause” concept. The community has

responded positively to this noble endeavor.

Funds raised during that inaugural 2009 benefit

event, went to the Valley Sound Lions Club from the race

held in Virgin Gorda, while the BVI Red Cross activities

and the Rotary Club of Tortola’s International Polio

Eradication Campaign were supported by the Tortola

race.

In 2010, the cause was for Cancer, with the BVI

Cancer Society benefiting.

Last year’s event focused on Diabetes with the BVI

Diabetics Association and the

Virgin Gorda Diabetes Association

being the beneficiaries.

Of all the causes over the last

three years, we all know some

family member, friend, co-worker

or acquaintance, who has been

afflicted by one of these silent

killers. The struggle to find cures

and lend support continues daily.

This weekend will be the

fourth “Race for a Cause” on

Tortola, starting at 7am at HLSCC in Paraquita Bay. It’s

yet another opportunity for the community to support an

important cause.

“I’m inviting everybody to come out and support

the cause,” said Race Director, Stephanie Russ Penn.

“This particular cause sees the beginning of an HLSCC

endowment fund, where the college can aim to grow a

fund that can help us to do developments in the future

and aid students as we continue to educate them in the

Territory.”

While contributing to the cause, persons are also

contributing to bettering their own health by exercising

in the process, a win–win situation. Many people have

turned this road racing series into an opportunity to

expand their fitness regiment alongside 200 other per-

sons, in a fun filled environment. The fact that it offers

varying levels of competition – from trying to better your

own best time to competing with others – just adds to

the appeal of the race and keeps the ritual going.

This weekend will close out the 2012 series on yet

another positive note and one last

chance to catch the crowd and the

spirited camaraderie the event

offers every time. Go and get your

last fix of the season.

Event organizers too, must

be commended for continuing

their endeavors in this regard.

That in itself is a cause worthy of

recognition and celebration. But,

whatever you do, I encourage you

to go out and support the cause.Running for a cause takes center stage
