How can I reduce my energy usage in housing?

The easiest way to reduce your energy

usage is by regulating your thermostat to minimize heating and or cooling

requirements. Wise use of hot water, lighting and appliances can also contribute significantly to energy savings. Finally, you can request the property manager perform an energy audit to identify energy savings

strategies specific to your home.

MOVING OUT?

When you receive notice of transfer, retirement or discharge, you must report to the housing office no later than 30 days prior to your anticipated departure, or as soon as your orders are received. The early notice will assist the Lincoln Housing staff in planning future assignments and scheduling maintenance. You must vacate your home on or before the date you are detached from your command or separate from the military. An appointment for a preliminary inspection of your quarters will be made when you file your vacate notice. The purpose of this inspection is to answer any of your questions, to check the overall condition of the quarters to determine if any repairs are necessary, and to give you specific instruction with respect to cleanliness and repair or replacement requirements. At the established time of final check-out, when all personally owned effects have been removed from the home, and the quarters are in a clean and orderly condition, the staff will meet with you to make a final joint inspection of the home and surrounding area. If you meet all the requirements for your final inspection, you will receive documentation stating that you have successfully cleared your home.

Windows provide a secondary means of escape from a burning home. Determine your family's emergency escape plan and practice it. Remember that children may have to rely on a window to escape in a fire. Help them learn to safely use a window under these circumstances.

AUGUST Living Green Tips

When possible, keep activities and chores that produce heat limited to the cooler parts of the day or evening like dishwashing, laundry and cooking.

Using your microwave or grilling outside are great cooking alterna-

tives to using the stove. The microwave creates less heat and humidity in your home than an oven.

Unplug any appliances or electronics you are not using, they often draw power even while

turned off. Use a power strip as a central “turn off” point. You can save up to 2 percent. Draw blinds, shades, or drapes to block sunlight during the hottest part of the day, especially

on south-and west-facing windows. Don’t position heat– producing devices such as lamps and TV sets beneath a wall-mounted

thermostat for a central cooling system. Heat rising from the equipment could cause the thermostat to read a temperature higher than the true room temperature and led to overcooling.

Keeping the sunlight out during the day will also help to cool your home during warmer weather and you’re A/C doesn’t have to work so hard to cool your home to a comfortable temperature. Close cooling vents and keep doors to unused rooms closed. Keep doors and windows closed whenever you are using A/C & heat. Check your HVAC air filters and replace when dirty. If you need a replacement call your

Resident Services Office.

All district housing offices will be closed Monday, September 7th in observance of Labor Day. Offices will resume their normal business hours on Tuesday, September 8th. Cherish Your Friendships

August is National Friendship Month! It is a wonderful time to reflect on the value of friends and a time to nur-

ture your relationships – old and new! As you know, friendships in the military are often life-long lasting. It is so

important to make that connection within your community and encourage one another.

F Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, and all the other Social Media Outlets are a great way to stay

connected to your friends and build new relationships with those living in common situations.

Remember to always stay positive and supportive for a healthy atmosphere online for

everyone!

R Respect – Respecting differences, boundaries, privacy, values and understanding points of view are

important to the success of your friendships.

I Influence – Influence starts with being positive and encouraging. You can be the one that

influences change or provides encouragement to a friend to help them achieve a goal. Lead by example

with integrity.

E Enhancement – Friends enhance your life by providing opportunities for new experiences and they allow

you to explore a different view or share a new perspective on something. Studies show strong friendships

can give you a healthier, happier life!

N Networking – Networking is the best way to start to build friendship. Attending Lincoln events, local

events, and various offered programs are great ways to network and meet future friends that have common

values and interest!

D Dedication – Dedication is an important part of keeping connected to your friends. Set time aside on your

calendar to make phone calls, set a date to hang out, send a card to let your friend know you are thinking

about them, or make a plan with your friend to attend a Lincoln community event. Making the effort is

worth the investment!

S Sympathy – Sympathy and empathy comes naturally for military families due to the

commonalities that exist in the military family culture. Build your relationships so they lead to supportive

friendships. Your friends will be the ones that will sympathize with your situation the most when you

need the support.

H Honesty – Honesty is the fundamental basic principle for all relationships. Honesty builds trust which

leads to a friendship that will last forever.

I Interests – Interests in common help friendships stay strong and connected. Ask your friends what hob-

bies, social groups, workouts, outings they enjoy and then set a date to do it together!

P Prosocial – Be Prosocial and be the spark of your community! Drop by a new neighbor’s home with a

“welcome to the community” gift or card, plan a block party with your neighbors, invite your neighbors

over for a play date!

Back to School Tips

Help your children start getting to bed earlier and waking up earlier the week

before school begins. Start limiting TV and encouraging more reading. Check VBCPS web http://www.vbschools.com/parents/ for updates and events, parents sign

up for the Parent Portal. Complete needed medical, dental and eye-care appointments as soon as possible. Don't cause

unnecessary absences. Know the school bus route and schedule. Do something fun together before school starts. Find out about dress codes before you shop, and go through your children's clothes with

them. Pick out clothes the night before. If you know what the school supplies are required at your child's school, shop early. If you have a teenager, wait to buy clothes after school starts. They want to look like their

classmates and this will save you the aggravation of returning items back to the store. Put up a family calendar in a central place. Call your childcare provider at least a week before school starts to review your arrangements.
