Lesson:
TIME REQUIRED: 3 x 55 minute lessons and homework.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Students will explore the employment opportunities within the Transport and
Logistics field through internet research.
Students will begin to recognise that there are five components to Transport
(air, sea, rail, road, and pipeline) and identify some of their related ser-
vices ( eg storage, logistics).
OBJECTIVES:
Students’ prior knowledge, skills and concepts: Students will need to have had experience in internet use for research, Publisher or Word for presentation, critical literacy for reviewing text.
Students’ Values and Perspectives (e.g.: Cultural, Environmental, Social, Economic) Students will find this activity risky as often this is not an area of career re-search which students would normally pursue.
PROCEDURE: Teachers will need to prepare a background to explain to the students the
importance of the transport industry to the operation of a country like
Australia.
This shows the relevant page to be accessed by students when they have
entered www. the-linc.com.au. This is the page which could be printed out
and given to students to use to make their career selection. It provides all
the possible choices for this activity
RESOURCES: Teacher Resources/Materials: Stationery supplies Computer room access Pre-printed T & L career options from www. the-linc.com.au for preparatory discussions (see page 2)
Student Resources/Materials: Internet access Stationery supplies
Student Product: An A4 size poster is designed which
will link with others in the class to
form a large Transport and Logistics
career map.
Refer to prepared examples for guid-
ance.
TEACHER NOTES:
This activity can be modified to enable it to be used for any career sector. If a large scale display is organised
try using a space external to your
classroom perhaps a Resource
Centre, window or large pinup board.
This will enable a wider audience to
access the information.
EXTENSION: Students can use this
format to create career posters
relevant to occupations which interest
them. These can be placed within
their Personalised Learning Plans.

Numeracy & Literacy Strategies: Good literacy skills are needed for this activity:

Present punchy short notes of information
Spatial awareness will be important
for layout of poster.
ICT Inclusion:

Basic computer operations
Effective Internet usage and
search techniques.
Publisher programming for poster
construction
Modifications for Improved Learning:
Some students may find it easier to work with a peer tutor or SSO to han-dle the reading necessary to com-plete this task.
Give students a copy of the-linc Transport and Logistics career choices offered to make pre-selection. Teachers could focus on one particular sector of the Transport and Logistics chain eg Air. A copy should also be given of the marking rubric to guide students through the expectations of the final product and assessment. Students log on to www.the-linc.com.au website then double click on the career section of the ship’s wheel. From there students are able to access information relevant to preparing a poster on that career by double clicking on their chosen career. Sample posters are included to assist with demonstrated results. Completed posters should be displayed together to show the relationship between careers e.g.:
AIR → Student pilot → Private Pilot → Commercial pilot →Helicopter pilot
→Charter pilot
→etc.
