newsletter STARplex Alexander Ave, Evanston Park | PO Box 1246, GAWLER SA 5118 JUNE / JULY 2012 president’s report The winter season is now well underway, our teams have competed in the junior state Championships, the club continues to grow with more teams than ever, especially pleasing has been the formulation of under 10 teams. These teams are the future of the club and it is extremely important to have representation at this level and to expose these little ‘Lions’ to the sport of basketball. We have had tremendous input from parents, the committee and the coaching directors to get the ‘ball rolling’ at this level, special thanks to Sean Carlin who’s teaching skills and patience must be applauded, Sean a former president of our club and committee member has now stepped down from the committee due to increasing commitments in the Trinity School basketball program. However the work that he undertakes there will continue to benefit our club, through the symbiotic relationship we have with Trinity College. I wish to take the opportunity to thank Sean for his support to not only the club but to myself personally. Two new members have been appointed in interim capacity (until the AGM in September) Tony Hall, who chairs our junior committee already and Kylie Brown who has the role of registrations officer, both of these have already been valuable contributors to the club and have just crystallised that contribution by becoming members of our Executive committee. I briefly mentioned the junior state Championships but would like to take the opportunity to congratulate our under 14 boys and under 14 girls teams whose successful State championship campaign resulted in both teams qualifying for the classics ( a prestigious basketball event held in Victoria) and also the under 14 national championships. This is the first time both of our under 14 teams have qualified for this event in the club’s history and is something that we strive for as a club to expose our young players to the best basketball competition in Australia so that they can develop personally and as a team. Our club will strive to support them as much as we can to ensure they represent the club in the best way possible, they have been fundraising for this event to endeavour to lessen the financial burden of attending these events, in particular the boys who travel to Western Australia. ( the under 14 girls will be playing here in South Australia at Morphettvale) I would like to thank all of those club members who have supported the fundraising efforts of the under 14’s, special thanks to Terry Nathan the team manager of the under 14 boys, whose experience here has been invaluable with the logistics involved in sending a team to this event. Our ABL teams have just completed the first round of CABL, and at this point the women are well-placed to compete in the finals, but there is still a lot of hard work left to do. The men’s team have had a less than ideal first round but have been bolstered by the return ( temporary) of some of our junior players Daniel Carlin, Jordan Centernera and Tom Giles who have been playing basketball overseas. If you have not yet been to watch our ABL teams in action, make sure you take the opportunity with one of the remaining 4 home games (Saturday night 16th of June versus Norwood Next game), thanks to all of the junior teams who have assisted on the door, on the bar and with a supper for the games that have been played and to those rostered for the remainder of the season. Good luck to all of the junior teams competing in Melbourne at the Nunawading Tournament and the classics, this is a wonderful opportunity for the team to bond, and truly enjoy basketball tournament play, also for those parents to socialise together over a busy weekend away. dates to remember 07 to 11 June No games Queen’s Birthday 07 to 11 June Melbourne Classics, Nunawading Spectres Tournament 16 June ABL:Centrals vs Norwood Flames 17 June Coaches development day (Coaches please make note in your diary. junior development news

Quality coachingThe Lions take the appointment of our coaches very seriously. We stringently research their backgrounds and measure their results and capabilities each year. We actively manage coaching performance and regularly review whether they are delivering the outcomes needed to ensure our continued development. This year we compiled coaches with the background, formal basketball qualifications and experience that make us leaders in coaching quality in South Australia. We have documented bios on most of our coaches. The club’s rapid rise would not be possible with the great coaches that we have.Recently the club made the hard decision to part ways with one of our coaches. The behaviour expectations we put in place for our players, coaches and parents alike are high. We understand that coaches, like players, need time to develop but occasionally we find when coaches, like players, do not demonstrate a desire or ability work in alignment with our high behaviour expectations, we will respectfully ask them to move on with our best wishes. If you would like any further information on the above please contact Chair of our junior panel Tony Hall.Beyond the basketAndrew Jantke was recently approached by the Salisbury Council and Basketball SA head up Salisbury Council’s Beyond the Basket program. This program will operate throughout term 3, aims to identify coaching talent in the Northern suburbs and deliver Basketball Australia Nationally Accredited development programs to these coaches on behalf of the council and Basketball SA. This is the 2nd year the program has run and is now fully booked with over 20 participants. For our Boys Coaching Director to be approached for this significant role further signifies the esteem our program is seen in in wider basketball circles.

U16 State and SAPSASA Selections We have an ever growing list of male and female athletes making SAPSASA and SA Country/Metro squads and we will send out an announcement soon on our new crop of representatives making these sides. Boyd Woodcock (Yorke Valley/Lions U14 Div 1 Boys) and Jackson Hately (U14 Div 1 Boys) will represent the state in the U13 SAPSASA state side and Malachai Ahmatt will be a reserve. In the U16 Nationals in June representing SA Country will be following players:- Demi Skinner (Pt Lincoln/Lions U16 Div 1 Girls)- Jasmine Bridgman(Whyalla/Lions U16 Div 1 Girls)- Adam Ryan (Roxby Downs/Lions U16 Div 1 Boys)- Sam Simmons (Broken Hill/Lions U16 Div 1 Boys)

With the following reserves:- Brent Hank (Pt Lincoln/Lions U16 Div 1 Boys)- Tyler Athanasos (Pt Pirie/Lions U16 Div 1 Boys)- Opal Mader (Barossa/Lions U16 Div 1 Girls)

U18 NationalsThis year the Lions had a record 3 coaches involved in the U18 National Championships in Perth. Andrew Jantke (Boys Director of Coaching) was Assistant coach with the U18 SA Metro Men’s side, Steve Boyton (ABL Women’s Assistant Coach) was Assistant Coach with U18 SA Metro Women’s side and James Murphy (U16 Div 1 Boys Coach) was Assistant Coach with the U18 SA Country Men’s side. We also had 2 players competing in the championships as bottom agers – Joel Foster and Austin Munzberg were both in the U18 SA Country side.

2012 Melbourne Classics - U14 Boys and Girls Team...

Girls finished 7th, the best result at the Classics by a Lions team. The boys finnished 11th and were the highest ranked boys team from SA.

Openings for new playersThe Lions are currently looking for boys turning 10 or 11 this year for our U12 squad. If you know any children that may be interested please encourage their parents to email their details to [email protected]

SASI/NITP trainingCongratulations to the following U14 boys recently selected to take part in NITP training at the South Australian Sports Institute. This squad includes the best players in the district competition and the Lions are very well represented in this squad of about 25, those involved are:- Toby Lockwood (U14 Div 1 Boys Coach)- Lachlan Dooley (U14 Div 1 Boys)- Biar Garang (U14 Div 1 Boys)- Deklan Crook (U14 Div 1 Boys)- Brad Skuce (U14 Div 1 Boys)- Brodie Nathan (U14 Div 1 Boys)- Brent Hank (U16 Div 1 Boys)

State Champs success 2012!Every single player, parent, coach, team manager, administrator, supporter at the Lions, in every division, in every role now and in the past should be very proud of your contribution to this year’s next leap forward in State Championship results. Across the board we finished higher than we have before but obviously we would like to get more teams into the finals next year.

We had 3 teams finish in 3rd position:- U14 Div 1 Girls (Coach Nikki Ireland)- U14 Div 1 Boys (Coach Toby Lockwood)- U12 Div 2 Boys (Coach Stephanie Harris)This result means that our U14 Div 1 Boys and Girls will qualify for both the Melbourne Classics tournament in June as well as the U14 National Club Championships later in the year. To have 1 Lions team make the U14 National Club Championships has never happened but this year we will be sending 2 teams! No other club in the state had 2 teams qualify for U14 Nationals this year. This is simply a fantastic achievement and will help put the Lions on the map Nationally!!You all know the commitment, perseverance and dedication you have put into achieving these results. • From the kids that have a passion and work ethic for their team mates, club and their own performance• To the parents who drive their kids all over town, motivate their kids through the highs and lows of high level competitive sport• To the coaches who are constantly pushing, driving their teams to higher achievement than before, developing their knowledge in the game, aspiring to challenge themselves with new and challenging roles.• To the administrators who are so supportive, so talented and work so hard to ensure the finance, communication and management of the club runs so smoothly and professionally• To our networks throughout SASI/NITP, Country Basketball Associations, DNSP programs, STARplex, Trinity College, St Columba College, Elizabeth Vale Primary School, Tyndale helping to develop our players/coaches, identify playing/coaching talent and support that talent.

lion’s in profileCONGRATULATIONS Demi SkinnerDemi Skinner has been named captain of the SA Country U16 Girls side, making history as the first player to captain a state side, whilst playing for the Lions. Demi represents just one of the many outstanding SA Country players that have joined the Lions in recent years, originally hailing from Port Lincoln. She got into the game watching her brother’s play and that love for the game grew when she began making Port Lincoln representative sides in 2006. She was identified as a major prospect by Shona McKeen, who oversaw player development in Port Lincoln. Shona promptly invited Demi joined the Port Lincoln DNSP squad, DNSP being the high performance network that operates throughout regional South Australia and has helped produced International players such as Angela Merino, Kelsey Ireland, Olivia Thompson, Emma Langford, Abby Bishop and many more.

Demi also had a talent for Netball because of her height and fitness but decided to choose to prioritise her time into basketball because as she says; “you can play all over the court and are not confined to one area”. Since that time she has had some amazing experiences and opportunities in the sport and she is still only 15.

Demi joined the Lions U14 girls side in 2009 travelling 7 hours from Port Lincoln to play games on Friday nights and after 2 years her family decided to make the big decision to relocate her to Gawler to attend Trinity College and play for the Lions to further her education and basketball opportunities. Demi loves the fact that basketball is taking her places and one of the highlights was the opportunity to tour and play in the USA with the

Jackson Hately & Boyd WoodcockCongratualtions to Jackson Hately & Boyd Woodcock who have been named in the State SAPSASA SA Basketball team to compete in the national championships in Melbourne in August. In addition both boys have ALSO made the SAPSASA SA Football side, which is an impressive double achievement. Jackson & Boyd join a growing list of CDBC high-achievers, making for a great future as we move forward in the club.Congratulations Jackson & Boyd.

Men’s ABA PlayerName: Matthew ClarkePlaying number: 6First basketball team: Noarlunga City Tigers under 10 division 3.If I was not playing basketball, I would be: Spending time with my lovely wife (she would probably make me watch more of ‘Alias’) Most memorable basketball moment: under 14 nationals or winning state knockout with Sacred Heart College.Worst habit: taking too long to ‘warm up’Most influential person on my basketball: My Dad, Gerry. Has never stopped being a positive influence on my career.Favorite food: BBQ meat lovers pizzaMost embarrassing moment: finishing last in 2010.Most annoying team mate: Lachlan Parker, always leaves his chest hair shavings in locker room. What makes basketball the best sport in the world: team mates, and the joy of going to battle with a group of fantastic young men.

SA Country Basketball team late last year, as well as travelling across Australia to play in various major tournaments, but none will be as significant as the National Championships she will compete in, in NSW(Tamworth), this July. This will pit her against the best basketball talent in her age group in the Nation, a tournament that will be scouted by national league, Australian junior team, US College and the Australian Institute of Sport Coaches. Girls Coaching Director, Glen Hosking, who also works with Demi through his NEW development squad, thinks Demi will be up for the challenge saying, “this young lady is every coaches’ dream”.

The whole club wishes Demi all the best; a fantastic player and person as well!
