MESSAGE FROM DISTRICT GOVERNOR BARB FISHEL

This is just a friendly reminder as we enter the final “pit stop” for our clubs that we need to do some house-keeping chores pertaining to our clubs business.

By now all clubs should have appointed a nominating committee to select the new officers that will serve yourclub during the Lion Year 2013-2014. The PU-101 should be completely filled out with the name, completeaddress and email address, and phone number of the newly elected officers. This information then needs to besent to Lions International and to your incoming District Governor for 2013-2014, FVDG Lion GeorgeQuinn. The accurate and timely reporting of this information on next year’s officers is critical for the use ofLions International and for your incoming DG in getting the information into the Multiple District Directory.

The District Governor’s Contest, Publicity Contest, and Visitation Contest will officially end on April 30. Allclubs should make sure that you send your reports in to Buck Ferguson, District 29-I Contests Chairperson, sothat you can be included in the final tally as to who will win the competition. Awards will be presented at ourDistrict Breakfast on Sunday morning, June 2 at the West Virginia Lions State Convention at Pipestem, WV.

If you have not yet registered for the WV Lions State Convention, I encourage you to do so immediately.There are special rates for first-timers and early registration. Take advantage of the lower price.

All clubs need to report your new Lions on your membership report and send that report to LionsInternational. If you club has suffered the loss of one of your Lions due to death, please report thatinformation also to Lions International so that we can honor that special Lion at the Necrology Serviceon Sunday morning at the State Convention.

Our work this year is not nearly over. We still have almost three months to accomplish the goals that weset for our clubs. Now that Spring has arrived, let us “spring” into action and accomplish those goals.

I encourage you to contact a member of the District 29-I Cabinet and invite one of the cabinet chairpersonsto your club meetings to present a program pertaining to one of the Lions charities that our district supports.I am also asking all Zone Chairs to make an effort to visit with each of the clubs in their zone and offer thoseclubs any assistance they may need in making sure their club is on the right “track” to finish our race towardsmaking sure each of our clubs qualify for the “Club Excellence Award”.

SECOND THOUGHTS by Second Vice District Governor: Doug LongMy second thoughts for this month come from thoughts about the aging Lions inour clubs and my new puppy. I know that this may be a strange combination buthere goes… When I observe our older Lions club members and listen to what theyhave to say, I am always reminded that their words come from past experiences andare often very valuable. They remind us that tradition is important and that weneed to do things “The Right Way.” Our older members possess a wealth of historyabout our community that may be very important when we assess the needs of our

community in an attempt to better serve those needs. I encourage all of you as you work on your slate ofofficers for the next year to include your senior lions in that process and that you always give them the opportunity to serve on committees. You may not be able to teach them new tricks but they may be ableto teach you a thing or two.

As for the new puppy, have you ever noticed the enthusiasm that they have for a new toy or exploring anew area of the yard? Do you have any new, younger Lions in your club? Have they come to you like littlepuppies eager to learn and become involved? I hope that they have. I encourage you to keep their enthusiasm alive by giving them opportunities to express their ideas, serve on committees and even holdan office. Also, just like new puppies our Lions both young and old need rewarded for their good deeds. I understand that for some of your clubs it may be difficult to come up with $1000 to present a MelvinJones Fellow or Leonard Jarrett Award. An award of appreciation or “Lion of the Year” may be a less expensive option. Remember, words of praise cost nothing and mean so very much.

As we quickly move into spring and the last quarter of the year, remember to do the things that you needto do to make your club more productive. I would encourage each of your clubs to adopt a new serviceproject, choose good officers and send lions to the state convention. I encourage you to recruit new members before years end and plan a meaningful induction ceremony. It is not too late in the year to setgoals and strive to be a club of excellence. If we remember to take care of the “new puppy and the olddog” we may just wind up with a great combination for success.

LIONS PROMOTE LITERACYAccording to the April issue of the LION Magazine, Lions worldwide are encouraging literacy and taking part in Lions International President Wayne Madden’s Reading Action Program (RAP). As of this date, clubs have reported 45,446activities, 1,908,180 hours of service, and 5,221,799 people being served. Typicalactivities that clubs have provided include reading to children, donating books

and developing after-school reading programs. These are only the figures that clubs have reported. There are many of our clubs

involved in the Reading Action Program that have not yet reported their projects. I encourage your club to take part in the Reading Action Program and remember to report your

project to Lions International. Your club will receive a very nice patch to be displayed on your club’s banner.

At the Lions International board meeting held in Indianapolis on November 1-5, 2012, board members votedto extend the Reading Action Program for a minimum of ten years. This decision was based upon the tremendous response by clubs worldwide and the importance of further expanding the Lions commitment toliteracy and education. Clubs should be making plans now to promote a Reading Action Program projectwithin their clubs.

NUTTER FORT LIONS CLUB CELEBRATES2ND CHARTER NIGHT ANNIVERSARY, FEBRUARY 28, 2013

The Nutter Fort Lions Club celebrated their 2nd Charter Night Anniversary on February 28 atRamon’s Restaurant with 25 members and guests in attendance.

President Jim Riley welcomed everyone and talked about some of the things our club has accomplished over the past year. Our Sight Committee collected over 350 pairs of glasses for recycling. Our club provided eye examinations and new glasses for 14 local residents and two persons received hearingaids. We also volunteered at the Clarksburg Mission and in January and February our club served over 800meals. As a result of our annual Spaghetti Dinners we have set up a scholarship fund to be able to award twoseniors from RCB High School each a $500.00 scholarship, which will be an annual event. We passed out 400 pamphlets on Diabetes Awareness Day, in three different areas in the Town of Nutter Fort. We are partnering with the Clarksburg Lions Club where we are sharing responsibilities on the “Adopt a Highway”project and with Flag Day where we hand out American flags to first graders at our local elementary school.We also have been selling Lion brooms to help raise money for new projects.

Other members that took part in the celebration were Bruce Kidd leading the Pledge of Allegiance, BillBenincosa with the Invocation, Ken Shahan introducing the entertainment for the evening, which was theRCB Show Choir, and Lyndon Auvil presenting a gift to Guiding Lion Steve Glass for all the hard work andpatience he has shown in the forming of the new Nutter Fort Lions Club.

After our dinner the meeting was turned over to Lion Steve Glass, International Director and our club’sGuiding Lion. Lion Steve presented President Jim Riley a writing pen for his two years of service as club President. He also presented Globe Service Awards to Bruce Kidd and Ken Shahan for their work on theSight Committee and also to Lyndon Auvil who has served for two years as the club’s Treasurer. Lion Stevealso inducted three new members into our club, Charles Pyles, Donald Douglas, and Mary Jo Ferrell. Thisstrengthens our club to thirty members.

PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENTLion Paul E. Hamrick, Environmental Chair

Pollution, lack of clean water and loss of plant and wildlife are just several of the growingthreats to our communities. Going back to 1970, President Nixon and Congress establishedthe U.S. EPA in response to the growing public demand for cleaner water, air and land. Withthe passage of the Clean Water Act of 1972 and subsequent amendments, we are very blessedto continue to have clean water at our taps but also to be provided with annual water qualityreports explaining where our water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares tostandards set by the state and federal regulatory agencies. Did you know that according to theUnited Nations Environment Program (UNEP), only about 20% of the world’s populationhas access to clean water.

Many of our Lions living and working in the Eastern Panhandle along the tributaries of theChesapeake Bay are working with their Watershed to help protect the Blue Crab, whileother Lions from Lewis County over to Berkeley County want to protect their favoriteBluegill hole. I would ask each club in District 29-I to consider a local cleanup project ormaybe a pollution education/awareness program at an April meeting to share informationand protect our rivers, lakes, creeks, ponds, springs and wells -- the source for our drinkingwater (both tap and bottled).

LIONS INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL PHOTO CONTEST

Lion Paul Hamrick, District 29-I Environmental Chairperson has submitted the followingupdate on the Environmental Photo Contest sponsored by Lions International:

It is with great pleasure to announce that Lion Joan Maggio’s photo entry has been submitted to Lions International as the winner for the Multiple District 29 level of competition. In last month’s newsletter, it was announced that Lion Joan’s entry had wonon the District 29-I level of competition.

The photo and contest entry form was received by MD-29 Council Chairperson Lion PattyNutter and Lion Joan’s photo will be MD-29’s winner to Lions International and placed ondisplay at the annual Lions International Convention in Hamburg, Germany with all themultiple district-level entries. Registered convention attendees will vote for their favoritephoto.

Lion Joan is a member of the Paw Paw Lions Club and is currently serving as club president.Congratulations to Lion Joan on her achievement.

DISTRICT CONTESTS UPDATEIn an effort to encourage more clubs to participate in the District Contests, the District 29 I Contest

Chairperson Buck Ferguson has proposed that we name a “Club of the Month”. The club that is the most involved inLions projects and activities during that month would be eligible to win the award for that month. Clubs can win

only one time during the contest year. We will also go back to the beginning of the Lion year, July, to begin selectingthe winning club. The award will be presented to the winning club by either the Contests Chairperson, the Zone

Chair, or the District Governor. The winner will also be announced in the district newsletter each month. All youneed to do is report all of your clubs activities and projects during the month on the Activities Report and send them

to the Contests Chairperson Buck Ferguson, 211 Hice Street, Belington, WV, 26250.
