MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR Dear Fellow Lions, Lionesses, Leo's and Lions Ladies,

"Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the

patience, and the passion to reach the stars to change the world." Harriet Tubman.

Thank you to all the clubs that have inducted new members. International President Barry would like all

clubs to work on retention as well.

I attended the Special Olympics Health Forum. This forum was held to help the parents to take extra care

of their special children as far as diet, exercise and sport is concerned. The Special Olympics will be held

next year in Durban or Pietermaritzburg. They are asking for Lions to help that day. They will let me

know the date.

The Cabinet and Council Meetings were held this month at Cowies Lions Club. I thank them for all their

hard work and support.

Mid Year Convention: At the moment there are 30 Lions that have registered. Let as have a great turnout.

Start registering and you can pay it off monthly.

Multiple District Convention: Their might be a reduction in the registration fee. I went to Checkers to

enquire if busses went to Windhoek and the prices.

You have to go to Johannesburg- return ticket from Durban to Jhb is R500.

Return ticket fro Johannesburg to Windhoek is R2900. This is a very special MDC as it is the 50th. It

would be great to see a large contingent of 410C Lions but I do understand the cost and work situation.

Lions communication is the most important part of our organization. The secretaries play a very

important role in passing the communication they receive from all. When I read the minutes I notice some

say no incoming mail, and also do not list the incoming mail. This is where our problems lie, as Lions

will come to you and say they never knew about this and that.

I have visited three clubs this month and DCS Sandy is sending out emails to the clubs for my visits.

Fellow Lions thank you for all your wonderful service projects and your input to our great magazine.

On 20 August, the Lions Club of Scottburgh held its monthly business meeting at the Scottburgh Library. However, this evening was special because Mariana Smith was inducted into the Lions. This was followed by scrumptious snacks.

UPDATED INFORMATION ON THE NHLANHLA ‘SENGE’ MQADI FAMILY FROM HIBBERDENE LOCAL NEWSPAPER.

Help continues to pour in for Nhlanhla Mqadi, the young lifesaver who lost both legs in a hit-and-run incident. The Lions Club of Hibberdene started the ball rolling with a donation of groceries, a local builder and Handy Hardware set about making the home wheelchair friendly, adding an extra room and bathroom. Beekman Group has undertaken to install a solar geyser, CTM is donating bathroom tiles and someone has offered to transport Nhlanhla to and from school. It's amazing how far a ball will roll if you give it a good push to get it going!

RAMSGATE

LION JANICE SELKON INDUCTED LP DEBBIE BERRY LION JENNY HENRY WAS AWARDED LION OF THE YEAR.

The Ramsgate Lions held their Presidential Induction Luncheon on Sunday the 11th. The function was held at the Ramsgate Lions Community hall. Past District Governor Debbie Berry was re- inducted for a second term of office. The function was very well attended, with guests coming from as far as Pinetown and Durban. The Lion of the year award went to Jenny Henry, for taking over the responsibility of looking after the Ramsgate Lions Community hall, and is also responsible for the hiring of the hall. Lion Warren Theron was awarded the wooden spoon. It is used for inspiring our fellow Lions to do more for the community, rather than stirring nonsense in the club.

SCOTTBURGH

At the Scottburgh Lions Induction dinner on Saturday, June 15, Lion Eddie Donaldson handed the chain of office to Lion Bernie Orth. Lion Bernie said he intended steering the club on its steady path with the emphasis on Lions members enjoying their service to the community.

The Kokstad Lions Club inducted Doctor Nigel Hoffman as their 42nd President at an informal dinner at

his home on Sunday evening, attended by Lions, family and friends. Past District Governor Stuart

Charlton performed the ceremony and is pictured placing the Chain of Office on the shoulders of their

new President.

HAVE A LAUGH

The Scotsman and The Arab

An Arab Sheik was admitted to hospital for heart surgery, but prior to the surgery, the doctors needed to

store his type of blood in case the need arose.

As the gentleman had a rare type of blood, it couldn't be found locally, so, the call went out and finally a

Scotsman was located who had a similar blood type. The Scot willingly donated his blood for the Arab.

After the surgery, the Arab sent the Scotsman in appreciation for giving his blood, a new BMW, 5 carats

of diamonds, and $50,000 dollars.

A couple of days later, the Arab had to go through corrective surgery. The Scotsman happily donated his

blood again. After surgery, the Arab sent the Scotsman a thank-you card and a box of Black Magic

chocolates.

The Scotsman was shocked that the Arab did not repeat his earlier kind gesture...

So he phoned the Arab and asked him: "I thought you would be generous again, that you would give me

another BMW, diamonds and money ... but you only gave me a thank-you card and a box of

chocolates.......why???"

To this the Arab replied: "Aye laddie, but I now have Scottish blood in ma veins".

CLUB PROJECTS AND FUNDRAISERS

SCOTTBURGH

On 21 July, the Scottburgh Classic Car Show was held at the Country Club and the Scottburgh Lions had a stall selling bacon & egg rolls, hamburgers and boerewors rolls. The show was a huge success with 4500 visitors enabling the Lions to make R8000 which will go towards their ongoing projects.

The Lions Club of Scottburgh has helped the District 49 Children’s Place of Safety on numerous occasions in a variety of ways. Recently, they requested help to acquire a second-hand twin-tub washing machine. They were delighted when the Lions donated a brand new Defy Twin-tub 1000 machine.

VRYHEID

Dawn Scott (Hospice) Lion Cindy Mossop, Lion President Ryan Seegers, and Val Mossop (Hospice).

Proceeds from the Lions Mayfair 2013 have enabled the Lions Club of Vryheid to give back to the community. Recently they made a donation of adult diapers to Vryheid Hospice.

The Lions Club of Vryheid again supported the SAVF bazaar selling steak rolls and “something new”, chicken prego rolls. (EXTRACT FROM THE VRYHEID HERALD)

ESTCOURT

On the 3rd August the Lions Club of Estcourt held there 150 Club draw. With mugs of steaming hot soup and slices of delicious breads followed by a dessert of Apple crumble and home-made custard, ticket holders waited in anticipation for the final three tokens that rattled around in the bag, to be called out one by one. Flo Fairfield squealed with excitement when she heard she was the winner of the 1st prize of R1500-00, second was Brian Smith with R750-00 and third was Kobus Conradie with R500-00. Well done to all the winners!! The Lions Club of Estcourt is a group of ordinary people trying to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. With the support of the 168 ticket holders we were able to make a profit of over R5 500.

PORT SHEPSTONE

The Port Shepstone Lions Club hosted their second Annual Schools Talent Competition at the 2013 Lions Show. The finals of the competition were held in the main entertainment tent during the morning of Sunday 30th June at the showground’s. A total of 13 entries from 5 local High schools, namely Creston College, Marburg Secondary, Port Shepstone High School, South City College and Hoerskool Suid Natal participated. They all provided the delighted audience with an array of music, song and dance routines. This was a truly enjoyable experience for those who attended and it was clear that the participants had dedicated a great deal of time and effort into their respective performances. 1st Prize – Port Shepstone High School, 2nd Prize – Hoerskool Suid Natal, 3rd Prize – Marburg Secondary School. The winning prize of a brand new printer sponsored by Leaf Technologies was handed over by their Regional Director, Danie Van Tonder.

COWIES HILL

On Saturday the 24th August we assisted the KZN Zone of the SANBS hold a blood drive at the Westville Girls High School. The target was set at 31 units of blood and they took 41 units, so we were happy but need to try to get more donors at the next drive. We gave each donor a boerewors roll and it was well received. We were thrilled that DC Vicki came along to support our drive and both her and DC Kim donated a unit of blood, as did our very own DG Heather and DC and Cowies Hill Lion Shirleen.

SHELLY BEACH

The Shelly Beach Lions Club held a free Diabetes Awareness Clinic at the Shelly Centre on Saturday 24th August. This event coincided with the SANBS Blood Drive, and both projects are vital in helping the community. In total the Lions conducted 339 individual blood sugar tests on men, women and children free of charge. After all the testing around 10% of the tests indicated high blood sugar levels in first time testers and it was advised that people seek professional medical advice. “This project is a primary focus of Lions International and it is always rewarding to help our local community manage Diabetes” said Lion President Clinton Barclay. The KZN Private Ambulance Service once again assisted the Lions, offering free blood pressure testing to the public.

WESTVILLE

Westville Lions treated residents of Dawncliff Gardens and Dawncliff Park to an evening of Andre Rieu's music. At the half time break there was a selection of tasty soups and home made breads and rolls to enjoy. The evening was much enjoyed by both Lions and guests.

KINGSBURGH

NORTH DURBAN

The North Durban Lions Club were asked by the Durban North branch of Nedbank to distribute 100 high

quality large blankets to people in need. The club have so far provided 30 blankets to the Horizon Farm

Trust, 15 to Highway Hospice and 15 to individual recipients. These warm blankets will make an

enormous difference to everyone who received one.

YOUTH EXCHANGE SHELLY BEACH

The Shelly Beach Lions Club had the privilege of hosting 2 Italian Exchange Students, Claudia Beretti from Bologna and Caterina Pogna from Milan, between the 3rd and 10th of August. Members arranged a variety of activities to showcase the Shelly Beach area during their stay including a whale and dolphin boat trip with Lion Anton Gets from Shelly Beach Ski Boat Club, trips to Oribi Gorge, Leopard Rock, Port Edward and the Wild Coast Sun. The Shelly Lions hosted a farewell braai at Past President Brad Visser’s home which was well attended and gave members the chance to interact with the students before they left for Cape Town on Saturday morning. It was a pleasure hosting them and this emphasised the benefits of the Lions’ Youth Exchange Program

COWIES HILL What a pleasure it is to host the Youth Exchange Student. We hosted Lois from The Netherlands and Antonio from Croatia and what lovely young people. While staying in Pinetown we had a good old South African braai with boerewors, pap and sous as well as driedwors and biltong and for pudding we gave them koeksusters and melk tert. The next morning it was off to Ushaka Marine World where they got up close and personal with the Seals.

The following day we took them to our club house at the Paradise Valley nature reserve, they took a walk

through the reserve to the waterfall and then we went for a drive to the Valley of a 1000 hills for lunch.

After lunch they paid a visit to Phe Zulu, this time they did the “fear factor challenge” with the crocodiles

and were given the chance to touch a 45 kg Burmese Python.

On Saturday night they attended our Charter/Induction Dinner and left on Sunday morning for Cape Town.

adored by women, and envied by most men.... he is Melvin, Melvin the Lion, more famous than James

Bond. He would love to visit your club and help you to have the wow (!) factor, the cool connection,

The Vibe ! at your fundraiser or Project.

Please can you fill in the attached form and submit to me, DC Shirleen well in advance of your proposed

event so as not to be disappointed. Most Clubs have annual events and will know approximate dates.

Book now to avoid disappointment. Please be aware that there may be clashing dates, and this cannot be

avoided, but all possible efforts will be made to assist Clubs.

The Mascot outfit belongs to all Clubs in the District and I appeal to all of you to please look after every

22 APRIL – 26 APRIL 2014 FROM THE EDITOR Well here it is the 2

nd issue of our District Magazine, and against all odds I seem to have got it out on

time.

I would like to thank those clubs that are sending in articles, it is so great to see that you consider your

projects and fundraisers worthy of being included in this OUR DISTRICT CONTACT. Please keep the

articles coming and remember, if you are sending articles in on a regular basis, you can use this forum

to advertise fundraisers that you want other clubs to take part in.

It seems that this month only Bloemfontein club has inducted new members? Our International President

has asked us all to look for new members and to build our clubs. We in District 410c really need to work

on this as our District has not ever had so few members, so please go out there and ask your neighbours,

friends and family, take them along to projects and fundraisers and you might be surprised.

Remember as well though that it is more important to look after your existing members and retain them as

members.

Go out this month work hard on your projects and fundraisers and send in the photographs and a short

write up about the event. I see pictures all the time on Facebook, and each photo has a write up but I need

a proper article so we know all the details of what you did, the article needs to be interesting to those who

where not involved.

Terms: 1. Transport: it is the Clubs’ responsibility to arrange to collect and return the outfit, via a Courier

or personally. The Club will ensure that this is done in the shortest time-frame possible before and after the event. The Mascot outfit will remain in the possession of DC Marketing in between events, unless time constraints require it to go directly to following Club.

2. Care: The Club will ensure that the outfit and box is well looked after throughout this period. Any loss or damage will be billed to the Club.

3. Cleaning care: The Club will have the outfit (body, feet, hands, head if required) dry-cleaned at their expense before the Outfit is returned.

4. Check: The Club/person responsible will fill in the checklist in the lid of the box, to ensure all parts are accounted for, and sign the checklist.

5. Photos: the Club will endeavour to submit photos to the Dc Marketing or to the District 410C FB page of Melvin in action.

6. Please look after Melvin as if he is a Club member or friend. 7. Health: please ensure that the wearer does not suffer from heat exhaustion or de-hydration.

Many short stints of visibility are better than one long continuous effort. Plan accordingly. 8. Enjoy and make the most of Melvin!! 9. (NB: although it is fun to Make Melvin hold his tail between his legs, this is not recommended whilst in
