More Updates From DG Larry

Several District Lions Clubs have received the e-mail detailed below. NOTE: Nothing has come via myself as DG nor have I had any notification requesting the Council of Governors approval.I suggest your club takes whatever action you deem to be appropriate. From: Mark Newton Sent: Wednesday, March 30, 2011 9:10 AM Subject: Round Wales Challenge

Dear Sir or Madam, I am doing a trip around the edges of Wales on my mobility scooter to raise money for The Royal British Legion, Help for Heroes and 1st The Queens Dragoon Guards. The trip, all being well will last about 46 days and I will cover approximately 1200 miles. I will be starting on the 1st May and will hopefully finish on the 21st June. Would you be able to help in anyway? By putting up a poster, there is a link to an A4 poster on the website (in PDF format). By making a pledge, this can be done on the website, no monies will be collected until after I have completed the trip or by spreading the word? If you would like more information about the trip please see the website, www.roundwales.co.uk or give me a call: 07773 903188 Any help is greatly appreciated Many thanks, Mark Newton

Articles Suitable for Spotlight being circulated via District E-mail

Co-ordinator, Lion Mike Rogers

I would like remind clubs that advertising of, and invitations to, Lions Club Fundraising Events, Fun Days, Food Festivals, Beer Festivals, Carnival / Shows etc should be sent through “Spotlight” and

not through the “IT E-mail Co-ordinator”. There is sound reasoning behind this as Spotlight goes out to a wider audience including all UK & Ireland District Governors. General circulars are limited to our own District e-mail list I would like to see a supplement of forthcoming Lions Events printed which would enable any “holidaying or visiting” Lions to attend or perhaps even encouraging neighbouring clubs to attend.

Please can I take this opportunity to further remind you all, of our MD105 Council Chairman, PDG Lion Jacquie Prebble`s request for photographs with brief descriptions of the various Lighthouses around Britain`s Coast, Please send either to her (address details as directory) or to myself. This is of course to tie in with the presentation of a book to International President Sid Scruggs in relation to the Beacon of Hope. We in 105NE have a great costal area with many “Beacons of Hope”, lets show them off.

Teesdale Lions Pride

At a recent meeting of Teesdale and District Lions Club President Nick Barron had a proud moment when he welcomed his daughter Tammy into the club.

As Tammy said "I feel as if I have been a Lion all my life - or thereabouts, and enjoy all the fundraising and social aspects of the clubs, and I'm looking forward to being a member of Teesdale and District Lions Club"

Like a true Lion, she immediately agreed to store a

box of banners (she'll soon learn !!!)

President when he inducted his daughter as a member

At the same meeting Lion President Nick was presented with a 25 year chevron by Zone Chairman Lion Fiona Doyle.

Morpeth Lions Support Marie Curie Cancer Care

It‟s that time of the year again when some local dandy Lions pick up boxes of daffodils in aid of the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity. In addition, this year they were able to sport an eye catching Marie Curie hat.

A combination of collections in Morrison‟s store on three days with a Saturday Street collection saw a total of £2034.27 raised for the charity; over a quarter more than was raised last year and a record for the Morpeth Marie Curie collection.

Local Marie Curie Cancer Care Organiser Cynthia Lilburn said „We have been amazed at the amount the generous Morpeth public has contributed this year. We are grateful to the Morpeth Lions Club members as well as our usual helpers who contributed so much to this success. In addition we thank Morrison‟s for so kindly allowing us to collect over three days.‟

In reply, Lions organiser, Simon Pringle, said „Morpeth Lions Club is very pleased to help Marie Curie Cancer Care and is gratified to hear of the collections outcome; of which the Lions collected two thirds; There can not be many of us who have not been affected directly or indirectly by this terrible disease. We are aware of the wonderful work undertaken by Marie Curie; particularly at their Newcastle Hospice. We are confident that the Morpeth public’s kindness will be well spent.‟

Ryedale Lions Community Activity

assists a local disabled resident

Ryedale resident, June Ramshaw of Helmsley, is looking forward to spring 2011 and the prospect of enjoying her new disabled friendly garden, thanks to the efforts of two local charities,Ryedale Lions Club and Ryedale Citizens Advice Bureau. June, is confined to her wheelchair following an operation on her spine in 2008 and found that she could not make use of her garden because she could not get around in her wheelchair. ’I did not really know how to go about getting help to make my garden accessible, so I sent an email to Ryedale CAB, asking if they knew of any help I could get. Within a couple of days the CAB in Malton got in touch with me and said they would try to get me the help I needed ‟

got to work

Mrs Ramshaw had worked in the retail trade prior to becoming ill and Ryedale CAB approached a national occupational charity, the Retail Trust, for funding for the project. CAB volunteer, Mary Borrett, approached Ryedale Lions Club to see what help they could give towards making June‟s garden a pleasant place to spend time and she raised £500 from the Retail Trust. Ryedale Lions Club provided the manpower. Jerry Scarr publicity officer of Ryedale Lions said “ We had a great team effort over 5 visits to transform June‟s garden with Lion Richard Otterburn as our project manager and garden designer. Ryedale Lions Club would like to give very special thanks to Mark Northgrave of Ryedale Skip Hire for donating the crushed rubble, Danny Beckwith who loaned the wacker plate, Jim Dale who loaned the cement mixer, Mr & Mrs Danks who donated paving slabs, Ian Rogers of Rogers Roses who donated rose bushes, Lion David Wass for the garden waste disposal, and last and by no means least Eileen Wray, wife of Lion Robin Wray who supplied cakes and made numerous

cups of coffee and tea keeping the lads happy and working hard. June told us “ I am amazed that two local charities, working together in this way, have managed to transform a space that was useless to me, into a
