To Our ReadersDear Friends of Molloy College Athletics,

This past year has been a very successful year for the Mol-loy College Department of Athletics. Every team has made strides in their quest for the perfect season. We had 13 student-athletes recognized as All East Coast Confer-ence First Team players, 21 named as Second Team selec-tions, two Players of the Year, two Coaches of the Year and

three Rookies of the Year. Our Men’s and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track teams consistently remained among the top ten teams in our region, four riders on our Equestrian team qualified for Regionals and the Softball Team captured an East Coast Conference Championship and made their second consecutive NCAA Region-al appearance.

Our student-athletes continue to succeed in the classroom while excelling athleti-cally. As a student-athlete body, we have the highest graduation rate in the confer-ence. 150 student-athletes recorded a 3.2 GPA or higher this past Fall with 9 4.0 GPAs. This Spring 133 student-athletes received this distinction with 7 4.0 GPAs. The overall student-athlete GPA is 3.10.

The passion and dedication of our student-athletes and our coaching staff have been instrumental in our increased visibility and prominence within our conference. It is obvious from the energy and competitiveness of each of our teams that our coaches are positively impacting the student-athletes and preparing them for life outside of athletics.

Community service continues to be a big part of our Athletic Department. As a group, we have engaged in more than 185 hours of community service. Women’s lacrosse tops the group with 52 hours of community service. The teams have collect-ed over $4,500 for the Make A Wish Foundation, American Cancer Society, Special Olympics, Lax 4 Life, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, The Michael J. Fox Foun-dation, and Autism Speaks. Our student-athletes continue to actively embrace com-munity service and have made a difference in the lives of many. In addition to their charitable endeavors, they also welcomed the community to our campus and fields for engagement activities. In recognition of their efforts, the East Coast Conference awarded the Molloy College Department of Athletics the Community Engagement Award of Excellence.

Our student-athletes embody the six attributes of a Division II student-athlete and we invite you to see what we stand for: Service, Learning, Passion, Sportsmanship, Resourcefulness and Balance. I encourage you to take the time to read this issue to understand why we are so proud of our athletic program.

Sincerely,

On Christmas Eve 2006, Jackie, the youngest of three girls being raised by a single mother, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, and was told that she had only a 50 percent chance of survival. Then, Jackie and her mother moved to Philadelphia so that she would receive the best possible treatment, leaving all friends and family behind, including her two older sisters. She endured months of harsh che-motherapy, spinal taps and bone marrow aspirates, in addition to being placed on a

ventilator at one point. But she continued to fight, and

achieved remission. Five months after re-turning home, Jackie relapsed just after her fifth birthday. Her relapse included three brain tumors, cancer in her central nervous system and peripheral blood and bone marrow. As a result, Jackie’s chances of survival were not good. She fought as hard as she could in the hospital for four straight months, enduring more chemo-therapy, spinal taps, aspirates for the bone

marrow, total body irradiation and an un-related stem cell transplant.

Jackie beat all odds yet again, and achieved total remission. She currently remains home, but still suffers from post-transplant complications, including graft v. host disease, attention deficit disorder and other learning disabilities. How-ever, AML is an unpredictable disease, and she could relapse again at any time. Therefore, she still endures regular blood sticks, MRI’s, occasional spinal taps, and bone marrow aspirates. Jackie has proven herself to be a hero, warrior, and most importantly, a survivor.

“The adoption of Jackie, through Friends of Jaclyn, was one of the most amazing experiences in my life,” said Cait-lin Wheeler, Molloy College basketball player. “I was truly amazed that this little girl standing in front of me was a miracle. While her mother told me the story of Jackie’s journey, this second-grader had more poise and composure than our whole team. She has made every member of the Molloy College women’s basketball team a better person.”

For more information on Jackie, and the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, please visit www.friendsofjaclyn.org.

The Molloy College Women’s Basket-ball team “adopted” eight-year-old Jackie, who was diagnosed with acute

myeloid leukemia (AML) at the age of three, through the ‘Friends of Jaclyn Foundation.’ The foundation is a non-profit, charitable organiza-tion that works to improve the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors and their families. They match a child in need of love, support and friendship with a college or high school sports team. “We welcome Jackie and her mother, Cindy, to the Molloy family,” said Tim O’Hagan, Head Coach, Molloy College Wom-en’s Basketball team. “I cannot begin to state how great my student-athletes are as people. They could not make me prouder.”

Born run To

“I’ll get up at 5:30 a.m. and then run for two hours,” said Filippazzo. “When I get to the top, there is an incredible view of the city below me. It’s just amazing.”

Amazing is also how one could describe Filippazzo’s impact in his first year at Molloy. In all three seasons – Cross Country, Indoor Track and Field, and Outdoor Track and Field – Filippazzo broke school records and/or won races. He also earned Cross Country Rookie of the Year and First-Team All-ECC honors.

“We knew he was going to be good,” said Head Coach Al Kilfoyle. “We just didn’t know he would be this good this quickly.”

Filippazzo, a Music Therapy major who plays piano and trombone when he’s not running, takes his accomplish-

ments in stride. “I love to run, and it never feels like work,” he said. “Even if I wasn’t on the track team, I’d still be doing

it. I think I was just born to run.”

If you happen to be in Italy this summer, don’t be surprised if you bump into

Molloy freshman track star Nick Filippazzo. He usu-ally spends two months in Sicily visiting family and

running the hills and moun-tains that take him to 4,000 feet above sea level.

runThat made Molloy a perfect fit for Frey’s skills.

The sophomore, who is majoring in Business Man-agement, plays No. 1 singles for the Lions’ women’s tennis team and is the centerfielder on a softball team that made it to the College World Series last year.

Frey taught herself to bat left-handed in her se-nior year in high school at Holy Trinity and the switch from right-handed, combined with her speed and exceptional bunting ability, has made her a nightmare for opposing defenses. “Jeana is the ulti-mate leadoff batter,” said Head Soft-ball Coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke. “She can get on base almost any time she wants, which puts a tremendous amount of pressure on our op-ponents.”

Jeana’s mother introduced her to tennis and coached her at Holy Trinity. Her softball DNA comes from her father, who played collegiate baseball at Iona. “That’s one of the best things about Mol-loy,” said Frey. “I love playing both sports, but what truly makes it special is that my parents get to come to all my games and matches.”

two-Sport Star leads lionsMost high school athletes would be thrilled to be

able to play one sport in college. For Jeana Frey, though, one was never an option. “I had always

played multiple sports,” said the Island Park native, “and I wanted to make sure that I went to a college where that was possible.”

Softball Wins first ecc title in 16 YearschampS!

A year after the program’s first ap-pearance in the NCAA Division II Softball Championship, the Molloy

College softball team surged to an overall mark of 42-14 in 2011. It also posted an East Coast Conference record of 22-6, good for second place. The Lions took hold of that No. 2 seed in the ECC Tournament and rode it all the way to the championship, earning the automatic bid to the NCAA Di-vision II East Region Championship.

Before the season got under way, junior first baseman Carla Campagna (Floral Park, N.Y.) was dubbed the ECC Preseason Player of the Year and the team was chosen to finish second in the preseason coaches’ poll. In addition, Mol-loy was ranked 12th in the National Fast-pitch Coaches Association poll to begin the season.

The Lions started the year with their annual Spring Break trip to the National Training Center, in Clermont, Fla. Af-ter dropping the first two games of the season, Molloy rattled off three consecu-tive victories against Bentley University, Saint Michael’s College, and University of Massachusetts - Lowell to jump over .500 for the first time in 2011. A 3-2 fin-ish to the Sunshine State swing, including a doubleheader sweep of Barry University in Miami Shores, brought the Lions home sporting a 6-4 record.

Molloy faced another season without a home field to play on and was forced to use the neighboring facilities of NYIT and Dowling College to play their home contests. The Lions got off to a fast start facing in-region competition as they swept the first two doubleheaders they played against Le Moyne College and American International College. After a split with New Haven, Molloy would go on to complete three consecutive sweeps of Mercy College, Holy Family Univer-sity, and University of Bridgeport.

In the nightcap of the Bridgeport doubleheader, sophomore pitcher Kel-ley Jansen (Long Beach, N.Y.) hurled her first career no-hitter. In earning the victo-ry, she struck out nine over seven innings, while walking just two.

The maroon and white then suf-fered their first three ECC losses on the

campaign as they were swept by C.W. Post and dropped a one-game contest to Dowling. The nightcap against Dowl-ing was postponed due to darkness as the opener lasted 10 innings. The three-game hiccup seemed to ignite Molloy as it went on to rattle off 12 straight victories, be-ginning with a sweep of St. Thomas Aqui-nas College on Apr. 7.

Sophomore third baseman Haley Calderwood (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) led the way in the Lions’ 11-0 and 9-0 wins over New York Institute of Technology as she drove in five runs. The offense as a whole came alive in the sweep of Phila-delphia University as the team batted an astounding .457 with three home runs and 21 RBI en route to beating the Rams, 11-1 and 10-0.

Molloy did not lose again until it met up with the Golden Lions of Dowling again on Apr. 2. After being swept in two one-run contests, Molloy once again put together a winning streak. This time, it was a six-game stretch, avenging an earlier sweep by C.W. Post in the process. Mol-loy defeated the No. 24 Pioneers, 2-0 and 5-2. The sweep of C.W. Post helped se-cure the second seed in the ECC Tourna-ment, setting up a rematch in the opening round as the Pioneers were slotted in the third spot.

Sophomore Megan Butterworth (Bellmore, N.Y.) proved to be the decid-ing factor in the postseason as she was named the tournament’s Most Outstand-ing Player. She pitched all three games, hurling three complete games, surrender-ing nine hits in 21 innings of work, strik-ing out 23 and posting an earned-run av-erage of 0.00.

Molloy won the opener against C.W. Post 2-0, behind Butterworth’s pitching

and Calderwood’s clutch two-run single in the fifth. The next day, the Lions held on for a 2-1 win over Mercy College to send them to the tournament final against regular season nemesis, Dowling. Mol-loy got the revenge it was seeking, as it shut out the Golden Lions, 4-0, capturing their first ECC Tournament Champion-ship, and first conference title in 16 years.

Molloy earned the No. 3 seed in the NCAA East Regional and took on Caldwell College of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. The squad suf-fered a 6-1 loss at the hands of the Cou-gars, sending them to the loser’s bracket and an elimination game against New Haven. Molloy prevailed to keep its hopes alive, winning 8-5, which set up a re-match with Caldwell that same day. The Cougars again got the best of the Lions, ending their hopes of another regional championship in a 5-2 loss.

Molloy took home eight All-Confer-ence awards, the most of any school in the conference. In addition, Campagna made true on her preseason nod as the Floral Park product was voted the ECC Player of the Year. Meanwhile, Head Coach Su-san Cassidy-Lyke (Hicksville, N.Y.) took home the Coach of the Year Award for the third-straight year after leading the Lions to their second-straight 40-plus win season and NCAA Tournament appear-ance.

Joining Campagna on the first team was Butterworth and sophomore outfield-er Jeana Frey (Island Park, N.Y.). Frey led the ECC in hits and runs, while lead-ing her team in batting average. Second-team honors went to Jansen, Calderwood, senior second baseman Alexandra Sydor (Glen Cove, N.Y.), and freshman short-stop Nicolette Sinagra (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

Strong Finish Highlights 2010 Campaign For Men’s Soccer

In 2010, the Molloy College Men’s Soccer team stumbled out of the gate. After being selected to finish fifth in the East Coast Conference (ECC) pre-season poll, the Lions lost their first four contests, including their first match-up in league play against Dowl-ing College on Sept. 15. The Lions closed the season with an overall clip of 5-11-1 and an ECC mark of 1-5-1. But, things are looking up for Head Coach Danny Longo’s squad, as the Lions had an impressive record of 3-0-1 in their fi-nal four games.

Junior John Alberda led the Li-ons on the campaign with 14 points off six goals and two assists. As a result, he garnered All-ECC second-team acco-

lades. Another nod went to senior mid-fielder Mike Adamcewicz, who totaled one goal and two assists in 14 contests. He also attempted a team-best 34 shots. Junior midfielder Daniel Patino and freshman midfielder Dan Brown col-lected seven points apiece on three goals and one assist. Sophomore midfielder/forward Tyler De La Torre raked six points (2 G, 2 A). Freshman midfielder Mario Gagliano finished his rookie campaign with four points on a goal and two assists.

Women’s Tennis Posts Best Finish in Program History

One year after making its first-ever appearance in the ECC Tournament, the Molloy College Women’s Tennis team bested that performance in 2010 as the Lions posted an overall ledger of 9-8 and a league clip of 5-1. After losing its opening three contests, Mol-loy bounced back to earn victories in seven of its final nine matches before post-season action commenced. Dur-ing the league tournament, the Lions made quick work of St. Thomas Aqui-nas College during the semifinal round in a 5-2 win. But, in the championship match against Queens College, Molloy fell just short of a title in a 7-0 loss to the reigning champion Knights.

For the second time in as many years, sophomore Jeana Frey brought home All-ECC first-team accolades. This season, she recorded eight victo-ries in singles and doubles play. Sopho-more Madeline Jurlano joined Frey

on the roster after being selected to the second-team. She and freshman Nikki Gloria teamed up to notch an impres-sive 13-6 clip in doubles, which includ-ed an 8-3 clip at the No. 2 position. Jurlano also went 6-9 in singles compe-tition, while Gloria had a team-leading overall mark of 10-5 in the singles por-tion. Fellow rookie Gabrielle DiCroce put forth eight wins in doubles and sev-en triumphs in singles.

Freshman Shines in Best Year Yet For Men’s Cross Country

In 2010, the Molloy College Men’s Cross Country team gathered around the efforts of freshman Nick Filippaz-zo. He made quite a name for himself in just his first year as the Wantagh na-tive was tabbed as the ECC Rookie of

the Year, and a United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches’ As-sociation All-East Region Team Hon-oree. He also shattered three school records, finished in the Top-15 in each race he competed in, and just missed becoming the first-ever qualifier from Molloy to secure a bid to the NCAA Division II National Championships in Louisville, Ky.

Molloy got off to a flying start in 2010 as it captured a first-place finish in the Hofstra University Invitational. The duo of sophomore Nick DiBene-detto and freshman Ryan Healy paced the Lions in the 2 x 6000-meter relay with a ninth-place showing. Two weeks later, Molloy returned to action at the second-annual C.W. Post Invitational, where Filippazzo made a well-awaited collegiate debut. In just his first colle-giate 8k, Filippazzo, a five-time ECC Rookie of the Week selection, posted a second-place time of 26:18.94, and fin-ished as the top Division II runner. He also broke the school record by nearly 15 seconds in the process.

Filippazzo continued his string of great efforts. On Oct. 9, Filippazzo nearly mirrored his run from C.W. Post as he once again placed as the best Division II runner. This time, it was at the DeSales University Invitational. Two weeks later, Filippazzo topped another record, running the 5k in 15:18.30 at East Stroudsburg Universi-ty. After helping the Lions to a second-place showing at the ECC Champion-ships for the second time in as many years, Filippazzo’s chance to reach na-tional glory was sitting in front of him. But, his attempt at the NCAA East Re-gion Championships came up just one place short as the third-best individual runner.

Women’s Cross Country Comes Up Just Shy of ECC Crown

Projected to finish fourth in the ECC preseason rankings, the Lions came out of the gate firing with an im-pressive second-place finish at the Hof-stra University Invitational on Sept. 4. The Lions were led by junior Alex-andra Barrett and freshman Caitlin Breen, who had an eighth-place run in the 2 x 6000-meter relay. Two weeks later, Breen broke the school record in the 5k at the C.W. Post Invitational -

the first of three times this season that she accomplished the feat. It also led to another Top-10 finish as the Lions placed sixth.

On Oct. 16, Barrett led the way for Molloy at the University of Albany Invi-tational, where she clocked in at 20:36.6 in the 5k, en route to a 19th-place team effort. The ensuing week, Barrett and Breen led Molloy to an impressive third-place performance at the Pete Nevins Invitational, which was held at East Stroudsburg University. Breen clocked in a time of 20:29 in the 5k, which was good enough for a 14th-place finish and a new school record. Barrett came in just behind with an 18th-place (21:05.90) finish.

In the ECC Championships, the Lions finished just three points in back of St. Thomas Aquinas College for the league title. Breen broke the school re-cord in the 5k for the third time this year, clocking in at 20:13.73. She also placed sixth, and brought home All-ECC first-team accolades in the process. Meanwhile, junior Alyssa Fuertes and Barrett each received second-team rec-ognition for their 11th- (20:50.45) and 13th-place (20:52.89) runs, respectively.

Volleyball Brings In New Coach For Hopeful Turnaround

On Dec. 1, Molloy College Direc-tor of Athletics Susan Cassidy-Lyke announced the appointment of Wil-liam Corrao as Head Volleyball Coach. Corrao comes over to Rockville Centre after a four-year stint as a head assistant at Adelphi University. During each of his years at Adelphi, the Panthers se-cured a berth in the NCAA Division II East Region Championship. In addition to his impressive work with the Pan-thers, Corrao brought home a pair of junior varsity league titles and an overall mark of 32-5 as the Head Junior Varsity Volleyball Coach at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington, N.Y.

Molloy finished the past season with an overall mark of 8-24 and an ECC clip of 2-10. Junior Angelica Nicalek highlighted the year for the Lions as she made a repeat landing on the All-ECC second-team. In just 23 matches, Nicalek registered 284 kills and a .243 hitting percentage. She also picked up 222 digs and served 25 aces, which ranked her second and third on the squad, respectively. Moreover,

Nicalek became the school’s all-time leader in kills on October 7 in a 3-1 tri-umph against Caldwell College. Less than a month later, on November 2, she put down a career-best 28 kills in a 3-1 win over Felician College.

Women’s Soccer Ends Four-Year ECC Postseason Drought

In 2010, the Molloy College Wom-en’s Soccer team put an end to a four-year ECC post-season shortfall as the Lions secured the No. 4 seed in the league tournament. Despite losing to C.W. Post, Molloy wrapped up the sea-son with an overall record of 6-10-1 and an ECC clip of 4-3. It also put three of its members on the All-ECC second-team roster. Sophomore midfielder Ni-cole Valentine, who was tabbed as the league’s best rookie in 2009, served as the Lions’ leading point-getter with 19 points off nine goals and one assist. Spe-cifically, in two of those contests, Valen-tine notched a hat trick.

Senior midfielder Dianna Ge-neva, a three-time All-ECC honoree, appeared in 13 contests, and was slot-ted third on the squad in scoring with seven points (3 G, 1 A). Lastly, sopho-more back Alyssa Faller was picked to the second-team for her key role on the Molloy back line, where she helped the defense hold the opposition to an aver-age of 2.62 goals per game. She also converted on each of her penalty kick attempts, which came in crucial con-tests against Philadelphia University and Mercy College. In that same game against the Mavericks, the one-time Loyola University Greyhound dished out one of her two assists of the year.

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our Athletic Fund Club. The athletic fund was established on July 1, 2010 and in our first year we have made great strides in establishing a support group for our 16 NCAA intercol-legiate sports and 3 club teams. We have currently 48 members with dona-tions totaling $9675. An additional $148,120 was raised through various events organized through the athletic fund. We look to our alumni (who have been so supportive and generous over the years), along with our friends and fam-ily members to continue to be a part of our student-athletes’ lives and sport. I am asking all current members of the club to promote membership and get a former teammate, friend, or family member to join.

The Club provides direct support for over 250 men and women student-ath-letes who are currently competing within our athletic department. Through your generous contributions we will be able to enhance our training and com-petition sites, expand our student athletes’ travel, and provide all the necessary equipment and apparel needed to compete within our region and across the country. I would like to extend our sincere thanks in advance on behalf of our Depart-ment of Athletics for your help and support. I look forward to hearing from you or seeing you at one of our contests or events. Join us today and in the future!

Men’s Lacrosse Matches 2010 Win Total, Sets Bar High for 2012

The Molloy College Men’s La-crosse team came into the season with unsure expectations. After losing Al-bert Maione to graduation and the Ma-jor League Lacrosse Draft, the Lions needed a new offensive weapon as well as someone to step up into the slot. The maroon and white were able to pick up a key addition in the offseason, when Jimmy Davis (Levittown, N.Y.) enrolled as a graduate student after playing for Division I power Princeton University. The defense would be bol-stered by Joe Vissichelli (Hicksville, N.Y.).

Molloy, sporting a 2-6 overall re-cord and 0-2 mark in ECC play, were in desperate need of a win, and they got what they were looking for when they traveled to Orangeburg, N.Y. to take on the Chargers of Dominican Col-lege. The Lions were paced by Davis and Lutz, who both scored four goals on the day in the 16-10 victory. Now that Molloy had their first conference win in their pocket, the road did not get any easier as they faced off against sixth-ranked Mercy College. With a 4-3 lead in the third quarter, the Lions watched their lead slip away as the Mavericks went on a five-goal run to take the game away from Molloy, 8-4.

Molloy finished up the season with an overall mark of 5-10 and an ECC ledger of 3-7.

Season Ending Six-Game Winning Streak Caps Another Strong Year for Women’s Lacrosse

Coming off an incredible season in 2010, the Lions looked to continue their winning ways. Picked third in the preseason East Coast Conference poll, Molloy had high expectations going into the early season. The Lions would rely on junior midfielder and All-ECC first-teamer Emily Antonette (Seaford, N.Y.) to lead the offense, and the de-fense would be paced by All-ECC sec-ond-teamer Christina Metelenis (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and Lauren Kenny (Smithtown, N.Y.) in front of senior netminder Jackie Bove (North Massapequa, N.Y.).

The Lions closed out the season on a high note, defeating ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College by a score of 19-7. Antonette was the sparkplug yet again with a five-goal evening, which helped Molloy extend its winning streak to six straight and a record of 11-5 over-all and 6-2 in the ECC.

Seven Lions were honored for their play during the season when the East Coast Conference announced its 2011 post-season awards. Antonette and ju-

nior Melanie Sosnowski (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) garnered first-team dis-tinction, while, Metelenis, Bove, se-niors Maria Varricchio (Massapequa, N.Y.), and Hayley Lacey (Levittown, N.Y.) and sophomore Danielle Cle-si (Levittown, N.Y.) were named to the second-team. Each player was also tabbed as an All-American by USA Col-lege Lacrosse.

Injuries Halt Women’s Basketball’s Hopes of Second Straight ECC Title

The Molloy College Women’s Bas-ketball team was picked to finish sec-ond in the East Coast Conference after coming off their conference champion-ship season in 2009-10. They started the year hoping to get revenge from where they left off, taking on nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce in their first game, a re-match of their NCAA Division II East Region semifinal loss a year ago. The Lions fell short in that game, 73-61, but senior forward Caitlin Wheeler (Belle Harbor, N.Y.), broke the all-time Mol-loy blocks record in just her second year with the program.

Molloy finished up sporting the No. 6 seed in the ECC Tournament and would draw third-seeded Bridge-port in the first round. It fought tough, but Bridgeport seemed to be too much, as the Purple Knights took down Head

Coach Tim O’Hagan (East Rocka-way, N.Y.) and the Lions, 66-52, which closed out Molloy’s 2010-11 season.

The Lions look to have a bounce back year in 2011-2012 as they will re-turn sophomore guards Ashley Addi-son (East Hanover, N.J.), Christina Marra (Dix Hills, N.Y.), and sopho-more forward Ikema Ross (East Pa-tchogue, N.Y.).

The Lions will also be happy to get back junior transfer Laura Rivera (El-mont, N.Y.), who was lost for the sea-son after tearing her ACL in pre-season play.

Freshman Guard Steals Show for Men’s Basketball in 2010-11

Head Coach Charlie Marquardt (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) and the Molloy College Men’s Basketball team finished up the 2010-11 campaign with a first-round exit from the East Coast Confer-ence Tournament at the hands of New York Institute of Technology, 70-66. It finished up the season with an overall mark of 9-18, with a conference ledger of 9-12.

The Lions were selected to finish fifth in the East Coast Conference pre-season poll, and senior forward Brian Hutchinson (Elmont, N.Y.) was cho-sen as the ECC Preseason Player of the Year after averaging 15.2 points and 8.9 rebounds per game in 2009-10.

The Lions ended their conference play by going 3-6 over their final nine games, falling to fifth in the confer-ence and had to travel to the No. 4 seed NYIT for an ECC Tournament quar-terfinal. In that game, The Lions and Bears were knotted at 66-apiece with just 23 ticks to go in the second half. NYIT rattled off four straight on a lay-up and two free throws to seal a 70-66 victory. The Lions saw four players score in double-figures as Jimmy Nolan led the way with 19, Tolulade Jegede added 15, while John Petrucelli tallied 14 and Dariel Concha chipped in 13 of his own.

At the conclusion of the season, Freshman John Petrucelli was named the ECC Rookie of the Year, the first time a Molloy player has received the honor. In addition, Petrucelli was named to the All-ECC first-team and All-Rookie squad. For the season, Pe-trucelli led the team in scoring (15.7

Baseball Brings Home First Ever ECC Regular Season Crown in 2010-11

It was a banner year for Molloy College baseball as the program won its first East Coast Conference regular-sea-son title on the final day of the season with an 8-3 victory over the University of Bridgeport. The Lions finished up conference play with a 22-8 record, one game better than the Purple Knights. Overall, Head Coach Joe Fucarino (Wantagh, N.Y.) and the Lions ended the year sporting a 31-20 record. While the 31 wins are a personal-best for Fu-carino, they match the program-high set in 2001 and 2002.

Two players for the Lions earned preseason awards, as senior catcher Robert LaRusso (Bayside, N.Y.) earned the ECC Preseason Player of the Year nod, while junior southpaw

Chuck Fontana (Staten Island, N.Y.) was named to the 2011 Tino Martinez Award Watch List, a ledger naming the best Division II baseball players in the country.

The two squads which the Lions defeated the weekend prior to preserve the top seed, were the same two that would knock them out. Molloy drew St. Thomas Aquinas in the opener and was defeated 4-1 as errors plagued the Lions in the field. The following day, Bridge-port showed the Lions the early exit as it held on for a 1-0 victory, as the game-tying run was gunned down at the plate to end the game.

Molloy posted a clean sweep of the 2011 East Coast Conference post-sea-son awards as LaRusso was named the Player of the Year, Fontana was selected as the Pitcher of the Year, and fresh-man Carlos Guzman (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) was heralded as Rookie of the Year. Rounding out the sweep was Joe Fucarino (Wantagh, N.Y.), as he cap-tured the Coach of the Year honor for the second time in three years.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Molloy College continued its support of the

Make-A-Wish Foundation during the 2010-11 academic year. Led by Presi-dent and men’s lacrosse student-athlete Lincoln Nembhard, Vice President and women’s lacrosse student-athlete Jackie Bove, and Secretary and women’s bas-ketball student-athlete Christina Marra, the committee dedicated their time and efforts to the student-athlete needs and concerns here at Molloy. These leaders also coordinated and executed numerous events throughout the year in an effort to raise funds and awareness for a vari-ety of organizations.

Throughout the year, SAAC orga-

nized a concession stand at home ath-letic contests for basketball and lacrosse games. Through the hard work of the committee, they were able to raise near-ly $1000 by selling hot dogs, soda, wa-ter, chips and candy.

Another event sponsored by the group was the annual “Fan Favorite” T-shirt fun-draiser. Long sleeve t-shirts with the team lo-gos were sold to family and friends of the de-partment, with the pro-ceeds totaling $1200.

Along with their efforts for Make-A-

Wish, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee was involved in raising funds for Special Olympics. This year, members of each team participated in a “Polar Plunge” and raised $740.

In the past season, the Molloy Col-lege Equestrian team posted several individual highlights. Four rid-

ers made the Regional Show, while two qualified for Zones. Senior Erica Krilov achieved regional status in both the intermediate fences and intermedi-ate flat. She also had a first-place ride in the fences at the Regional Show, quali-fying her for Zones. Meanwhile, junior Megan Larkin qualified in open fenc-es, and picked up a Zone-clinching first-place performance in the event at Regionals.

Junior Theresa Hempstead and sophomore Mary Migliore also secured a spot at Regionals. Hempstead earned her way with a second-place showing in the walk-trot at the Dowling Show on Nov. 8. Migliore claimed a re-gional bid with a second-place effort in the inter-mediate flat at the Stony Brook Show on Oct. 26. Lastly, sophomore Angela Martinez and fresh-man Alexandria Sabatino took home first-place ribbons in the walk-trot-cantor and novice fences, respectively, during the year.

In 2010-11, the Molloy College Cheerleading and Dance teams continued to show their support for the Lions’ Men’s and Wom-en’s Basketball teams. Whether you were around or not to catch a

contest this season at Quealy Gymnasium, the Molloy Cheerleaders could be found brushing their pom-poms and doing backflips on the hardwood, while the dancers showed off some of their best moves at halftime and during each 30-second and full timeout.

In April, both squads appeared for the second time in as many years at the East Coast Conference’s Spirit Showcase. Through per-formances by teams across the conference, Molloy’s Cheerleading and Dance teams helped to raise $3,500 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Their next public showing will be at Bethpage Ballpark on Thursday, July 28, as the two teams will perform pre-game at the Long Island Ducks’ 7:05 p.m. contest against the Lancaster Barnstormers.

served in the dugout as Head Baseball Coach at Molloy College from 1993-2005. In that stretch, he recorded a ca-

reer mark of 224-253-2, and guided the Lions to their first-ever league tourna-ment championship, a New York Col-legiate Athletic Conference crown in 2001. Havern was also the first coach in the squad’s history, and helped to con-struct the Lions’ Field on the school’s campus.

During the 2005 campaign, his last season leading the maroon and white, the Nassau County Sports Commission recognized Havern as its College Coach of the Year. Furthermore, Havern, who helped the Lions to post-season action in six of his years at the helm, assisted in launching the Molloy baseball program to varsity status as he headed up the club team in their inaugural season of 1991 and 1992.

Frank WassenberghFrank Wassenbergh

took to the court for the Molloy College Men’s Basketball team from 1995-99. In 107 contests played, Wassenbergh, a

career .482 (423-of-877) shooter, aver-aged 10.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, while swiping away 145 steals, and dishing out 134 assists. In the Lions’ all-time record book, he ranks fourth at the school in field-goal percentage and rebounds, sixth in rebounds, seventh in made free throws, steals and steals per game, and eighth in free-throw percent-age and games played.

In the 1998-99 season, Wassenbergh also joined an illustrious club of those with 1,000 career points. He had his best offensive output as a Lion two years ear-lier. During the 1996-97 campaign, Was-senbergh amassed per-game averages of 14.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, which were both a career-high. He was also 152-of-311 (48.9 percent) from the floor, in addition to adding 58 assists, also a career-best, and 40 steals.

Tracy ArringtonTracy Arrington was

a four-year player on the Molloy College Wom-en’s Basketball team from 1985 to 1989. Over her time in Rockville Cen-

tre, Arrington had 10.5 points and 4.2 boards per game in a career that totaled 103 contests. She also dished 142 as-sists, and raked 105 steals in her tenure. In the Molloy record book, Arrington ranks second in the single-season catego-ry for assists and assists per game, third in steals and steals per game, eighth in field-goal percentage and ninth in field goals made.

Her .424 career field-goal percent-age also puts her eighth on the Lions’ all-time list. Sadly, in January, Arrington passed away from symptoms of multiple sclerosis. Her tragic death was mourned by the entire Molloy community.
