G ood Morning. My name is Missy Ketchum, Chair of the Board of Trustees of St Mark’s Episcopal Day
School, and I welcome all of you on behalf of the Board. Congratulations, Sixth graders! You all look so nice and relaxed, but I bet that some of your parents were hurrying to get here this morning. In fact, you’ve probably noticed that the adults around you are often in a hurry. That’s because, as you get older, time seems to get shorter, and move faster, and there never seems to be enough of it. Adults are always trying to save time or find more time, or, in your parents’ case, wishing they could stop time because you seem to be growing up so fast. But time resists all of these efforts. Just about the only thing that time will allow you to do with it is to make it sacred, to protect it as something special. And this is what St. Mark’s Day School is all about. Your years at St. Mark’s were a time apart from the rest of your lives, and the geography of this place perfectly expresses this. You went to elementary school on an island, on the banks of a beautiful river, encircled by oak trees.
Here in this place, many of you toddled in as babies. You learned here how to write your own name and how to use a mimeo. You learned to wait your turn on the swings and what you could order for hot lunch that wouldn’t get stuck in your braces. You learned the pledge of allegiance and how to define what it means to be an American in writing. And three times each week of your entire elementary school life, you started your day praying for others, in the community of your schoolmates and teachers. This regular worship and prayer became a rhythm in your life that we hope you now live by. Because faith will pick up when knowledge falls short. THIS is what your parents wanted your childhood to feel like: a sacred season where you could leap into worlds that are only beginning to open for you, to begin taking just a few of the millions of chances that are yet to come. Because time is always flying for your parents, they wanted to give you a childhood that offered you time to be a child. So in years to come when you drive by St. Mark’s, slow down, and remember your life when there was no big rush.
The following remarks were given by Missy Ketchum, Chair of the St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School Board of Trustees, at the Sixth Grade Graduation Ceremony on Friday, May 27, 2011:
T he Board of Trustees and the entire St. Mark’s community thanks Missy Ketchum for her many years of servant leadership. As Chair of the Board, she served the school so well
with her breadth experience. She has been a member of the St. Mark’s Board of Trustees for eight years, supporting and leading the school through two strategic plans, a “never‐been‐done‐before” marketing plan, many years on the Marketing/Admissions Committee, the “We Are One” Capital Campaign, and ultimately weathering the down turn in the economy. We welcome Nicole Bryan as the incoming Chair of the Board for the 2011‐2012 school year. She is mom to Klare and Bella, students at St. Mark’s, and has served on the Board for four years, leading the 2015 Strategic Planning process and serving on several committees.

D ear St. Mark’s Families and Friends, On May 27, St. Mark’s Episcopal Day
School graduated 36 young women and men. The church was filled with parents, family members, and friends. In addition, all faculty, staff, and students in grades one through five attended this celebration. There was no doubt everyone gathered in the church have loved these graduates greatly. I want to recognize the parents and families of these students who have provided a foundation of love and support. They made sacrifices for their child’s education, trusting the faculty and staff to love and nurture, instilling a love of learning and Christian values. Fifteen graduates have literally grown up at St. Mark’s. They began their journey here at age one, joining the Early Learning Program eleven years ago. I am reminded of the saying “it takes a village to raise a child.” The service began with a dove, representative of the Holy Spirit, leading the procession to the hymn, All Things Bright and Beautiful. After a homily, touching words, and the presentation of diplomas and awards, first graders joined the
graduates to sing He Plants Me Like a Seed, a touching song of growth. After the ceremony was over, we sent these students off into the world, “rejoicing in the power of the Spirit.” Now they go forth, continuing to make us proud of the individuals they have become. They will excel in academics, athletics, and the arts at fine schools in the Jacksonville area. I am proudest of the spiritual foundation and Christian values they will carry with them. This is a gift we as a school have given them, helping them to become young people of integrity, character, and service. Looking toward the future, there is much excitement this summer, as we begin construction on our campus, preparing for education and ministry of the church and school for generations to come. Groundbreaking for the We Are One Capital Campaign took place on June 5. Beginning in January 2011, the goal was to raise $5 million for the improvements to the church and school campus. I am thrilled to say $4.3 million in pledges and donations was blessed at the groundbreaking ceremony.
When speaking with parishioners and parents of the school about the campaign, the love expressed has been overwhelming. This place means so much to so many individuals for so many different reasons. We would love to have you visit our campus this summer, but please grab your hard hat! In Christ’s love, Cathy Hardage, Head of School

As you receive this, our campus is a budding constructions zone, with work on the closing of Oxford, the creation of the
St. Mark’s Green, the expansion of the Chapel, and the building of the Commons Building underway. What an exciting time to be in with you! I want to thank each
of you for your support of the Day School and the many ways it touches the lives of our children. I also want to give you a sense of the Big Picture:
As you know, we are well underway in our “We Are One” campus completion project. Work will continue throughout the summer on the Green and its grounds, on the Chapel throughout the rest of this year, and then on the Commons Building until early to mid 2012;
On April 22, 2012, we will dedicate all that has been completed as we celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the Founding of the Parish. Bishop John Howard will preside and all the living former rectors will be back.
Meanwhile, we will continue our education process for the Pilgrimage to the Holy Land in late October. St.
Mark’s teachers, Nancy Bennett, Anne Gorman and Beville Anderson, will accompany 37 other parishioners and myself on this pilgrimage and we will visit both the Arab Evangelical School in Ramallah, and the Amirim Jewish School in Binyaminah.
Then in 2013, the day after Easter, April 1, I will begin a four month Sabbatical, during which I will return to Israel/Palestine for further work with the two Partner Schools, and the focus of the Sabbatical will be healing and reconciliation. I will return to St. Mark’s in mid‐summer to begin the next phase of our mission together. These are exciting times at St. Mark’s and I am honored to serve as pastor in your midst. Jon (The Rev.) Sharing Our Light Sharing Our Light
Across the GlobeAcross the Globe
T he children of St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School are sharing their light with the world. In May, they eagerly came to school an hour early, and the
children of the Arab Evangelical Episcopal School in Ramallah stayed 1 ½ hours late, so each could see and speak to the other face to face. The joy displayed on the faces and the excitement of the children’s voices was heartwarming as we Skyped across the globe! In keeping with our quest for global learning, the children of St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School have spent the spring learning about some of the cultures found in the “Holy Land” in preparation for the Pilgrimage being taken by our church in the fall. The scripture is coming alive in new ways as we have broader context for the timeline, characters, and places in our Bible. We have been excited to have an Arabic
lesson taught by our own St. Mark’s graduate, Chandler Bennett, and an in depth explanation of the Passover meal, complete with Matza. We are also enjoying the literature, like an ancient parable attributed to King Solomon entitled "One City, Two Brothers." We are all intrigued by the city of Jerusalem as central to three different faiths. As we have established relationships with two diverse schools in Israel, The Arab Evangelical Episcopal School in Ramallah, and the Amirim School in Binyaminah, we are learning about ourselves and others. Our communication with these schools have included written letters, e‐mails, and Skype. The opportunity to communicate with children across the globe is exhilarating for us all, no matter where we lay our head each night.
We Wore Blue Jeans for Babies!
On Friday, April 29, our Early Learning Program students sponsored Blue Jeans for Babies Day! All students and faculty were encouraged to wear blue jeans to school to raise awareness for the March of Dimes, whose mission it is to help moms have full‐term pregnancies and to research the problems that threaten the health of babies. St. Mark’s personal connection to the March of Dimes is our ELP student, Sydney Barth (pictured above right), who was born at 26 weeks weighing 1 lb 14 oz! We’re so thankful for the
research the March of Dimes has done, as Sydney is a very healthy and vibrant two year old. Sydney and her parents, Carrie and Brian, participated in the Jacksonville area March for Babies on Saturday, May 7, at the Northbank Riverwalk.

Helping Others
Collecting for Tuscaloosa Just days after the storms ravaged the midwest, St. Mark’s was contacted by Lizzie Danner, a student at the University of Alabama, a graduate of Episcopal High School, and a friend to many here. She lost four of her closest friends during the tornado and knew she needed to do all she could to help everyone else. St. Mark’s families responded to the need for help in Tuscaloosa with donations. The sixth graders organized the project and collected and sorted clothes, water bottles, diapers, toiletries, flashlights, and batteries. They also helped to load these items into a suburban that was bursting at the seams which Lizzie took to St. Mark’s Church in Tuscaloosa. Around 500 families were being housed and provided for by the church.
Our Used Books Reach Children in the Philippines
L ast summer, St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School donated several years worth of curriculum books to the charity, READ
Philippines, Inc., which helps reach very poor schools in remote areas in the Philippines. On March 15, 2011, the books finally reached their destinations at schools and day care centers located in a very remote area of Lake Sebu, South Cotabato, Philippines.
“Every few years, our school researches current trends in education and updates its books and workbooks to give our students the latest tools and resources for the highest quality education possible,” says Head of School, Cathy Hardage. “This leaves us with hundreds
of books which are still in great condition and perfectly good for children to learn. I can’t think of a better way for our older textbooks to be put to use, and I am thrilled we could provide books for these children.”

Philippines, “The books were transported a distance across several mountains and a river before reaching the children, for many of whom this was the first
time they have seen glossy, colorful books. These gifts were received with big smiles and uplifted their spirits and morale. They will serve as a big boost of encouragement for students to go to school and attend classes despite the difficult and dangerous terrain they have to walk from home to school.”
According to READ Philippines, Inc., the schools
now have more books than pupils. This organization thrives off of volunteer support and funded the shipment of these books by holding a golf tournament.

Faculty News 100% of faculty have a bachelors degree and hold a teaching certificate in the state of Florida, or an Early Childhood CDA. 46% of faculty have a masters or doctorate degree. St. Mark’s commitment to faculty and staff professional development is reflected by its $40,000 annual budget ($25,000 was grant money). St. Mark’s teachers know their students and pride themselves on striking the right balance between high expectations and nurturing support. 96% of St. Mark’s parents rated the faculty as being a somewhat or a very important factor in their decision to enroll their child. This was second only to the strength of the academic program. St. Mark’s is fully accredited by the Florida Council of Independent Schools and Florida Kindergarten Council. The Early Learning, Pre‐K, and Kindergarten programs are fully accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. We are the only FCIS school in Jacksonville to have achieved this prestigious designation. St. Mark’s offers resource classes led by expertly trained and enthusiastic teachers in art, music, library, computer, Spanish, and physical education.

Congratulations to Mrs. Drew Haramis, one of our third grade teachers, for being a First Coast News Teacher of the Week! Mrs. Haramis was nominated by her student, William Upchurch, who shares her love of history ‐ especially Florida history.
Reporter, Deanna Fene, visited Mrs. Haramis' class to interview both William and Mrs. Haramis. She also visited Clingman Hall to see the Florida Day projects on display and was very impressed by the work our students completed this year.
The segment aired Wednesday, April 27, during the 6 a.m. news on NBC‐12 and ABC‐25, and again during the 7 p.m. news on ABC‐25. If you missed it, we have links posted on our website and on Facebook.
Mrs. Haramis is the FOURTH teacher from St. Mark's to be recognized for this honor! St. Mark's teachers have been recognized more than any other school in the area on this segment! A Scien‐terrific Opportunity
We are pleased to announce a wonderful opportunity, Ms. Josie Bryan, our upper school science teacher, is embarking on this year as she is taking a leave of absence for the school year of 2011 – 2012 and will return to St. Mark’s in 2012 – 2013.
Ms. Bryan was asked to hold a supervisory lead position as a Park Ranger Naturalist in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. She will also be involved in closing and packing the artifacts from the Indian Arts Museum at the Colter Bay Visitor Center. These artifacts will be taken to the Western Archeological Center in Tucson, Az. During this time, she will also be furthering her love of learning and will be attending classes in winter ecology, wildlife biology, and geology. This amazing experience will allow Ms. Bryan to bring a whole new wealth of knowledge and real‐life experience to share with the students at St. Mark’s. She plans on keeping in touch regularly and will coordinate a few internet enabled lessons.
We are thrilled to know Mrs. Jennie Busey has agreed to serve as our interim science teacher for the upper school. She was employed as a Teacher Assistant at St. Mark’s during the 2010‐2011 school year. Mrs. Busey is a graduate of St. Mark’s, Episcopal High School, received a B.S. in Biology from the University of the South at Sewanee, and earned her master’s of arts in teaching in integrated learning and educational technology from Jacksonville University. She has previously taught science at First Coast High School and Bishop Kenny.

Faculty News St. Mark's has been voted a "Best of Jax” in several categories of the Jax4Kids survey! We’re recognized as: Best Preschool; Best Elementary School; Best Teacher (Mrs. Traci Salari) All classrooms in K‐6th grade are equipped with state‐of‐the‐art technology. 40% of our students are also St. Mark’s Church parishioners. We welcome everyone of all faiths to attend our school.
St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School and the Board of Trustees are proud to announce Mrs. Debby Graham,
fourth grade teacher, as this school years recipient of the Nancy N. Wood Excellence in Education Award. In 2001, the Board established this award to recognize and reward teachers or staff members who consistently and unselfishly go above and beyond normal expectations of time, energy, and devotion in working with students. Named in honor of the retirement of past Headmistress, Nancy N. Wood, the award is presented annually to a faculty or staff member who personifies quality in their teaching and in their influence on student learning.
Faculty and staff nominate peers for the award, which is then reviewed by an Award Selection Committee consisting of Board members. In the nominations, it was stated Mrs. Graham works tirelessly to create a positive learning experience for each student in her class. She has the ability to challenge her students in a kind and loving way, and is dedicated to creating leaders and thinkers in the classroom. Mrs. Graham graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education from Judson College and later added Early Childhood certification from Jacksonville University. She has taught at St. Mark’s since 1995. She has three grown children and enjoys reading, knitting, and spending time at Kingsley Lake. The current “loves of her life” are her twin grandsons, Matthew and Graham.
After a 40 Year Connection with St. Mark’s, Mr. Bartlett Says Goodbye
M r. Alan Bartlett, our fifth and sixth grade social studies and sixth grade reading teacher, has completed his last year of teaching at St. Mark’s. He began his teaching career at St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School in 1971 under the first headmaster, Norman A. Lowe. He then returned to his home state of Massachusetts and taught school there for 27 years. In 2004, Mr. Bartlett returned to St. Mark’s to teach sixth grade. During his many years as an educator, Mr. Bartlett has demonstrated he is a lifelong learner. He has taken advantage of attending many institutions of higher learning including Harvard University. A Word from Mr. Bartlett:
Forty + years ago, St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School was in its infancy. Our classrooms were spread between the home that
stood on the corner of Harvard and Oxford, and Sunday school rooms above the offices. Our kickball and lunch area was Stockton Park. Through faith and determination, under the guidance of dedicated parishioners and clergy, the school grew. It helped define Ortega, provided an excellent education for generations, and honors our church. The We are One campaign signals a renewed spirit to enrich the vision of forty + years ago, and honor the dedication of those who have sustained the dream. I am blessed to be a part of the St. Mark’s Church community and fortunate to have participated in its evolution.
Here are a few words from my speech at graduation to the class of 2011: Graduation from St. Mark’s is a unique milestone in your lives because it celebrates past accomplishments, while it also anticipates the future.
Today we need to honor your parent’s wisdom, commitment, and love in their choice of St. Mark’s just as we honor your accomplishments.
Each of you is as different as your fingerprints. So, don’t try to be somebody else – they are already taken. Each of you will be setting out on a unique path as you leave St. Mark’s, and you will be missed.
I would leave each of you with the hope that as you make your own choices over time, you will choose in such a way that allows you to take the St. Mark’s spirit with you and strive for achievement balanced by love and commitment. Let your goal in life be not the perfection of work alone, but the perfection of life. I, also, wish you the faith and courage to stand up for that which is good and just. Please remember that what you become is far less important than who you will become.

Sra. McKiness! After ten years as St. Mark’s Spanish teacher, Sra. Natty McKiness will not be returning for the 2011‐2012 school year and is pursuing other goals in her professional career.
During her time at St. Mark’s Sra. McKiness built up the Spanish program and instructed students from Pre‐Kindergarten through sixth grade. As we
integrated technology into our classes, she was at the forefront in applying technology with her instruction. Her commitment to continuing professional development gave her a great deal of knowledge in the TPRS method of teaching Spanish, as well as traditional methods. We wish the very best as we honor her for her years of service at St. Mark’s!

The family of the new student must be new to St. Mark’s.
The family should list your name on their application in the “referred by” location, or let the Director of Admission know who referred them.
The new student must enroll in Kindergarten or second through fifth grade (ELP, Pre‐K, 1st, and 6th grade not eligible due to class capacity).
The credit will be given after the start of the school year.
The referral credit will be split if referred by more than one family.
A maximum of three referral credits can be earned.
Parties eligible to receive the incentive are families who were enrolled in the 10‐11 school year and school faculty and staff.
The family must be a first‐time inquiry (not currently in our inquiry database).

P arent involvement is strongly encouraged at St. Mark’s! Actively involved parents are essential to the success of our school, and there are
number of ways for all parents to get involved. Volunteers are utilized for special events, including the Book Fair, the Fall Festival, picture day, and grandparents days; and for everyday activities, including assisting in the library, baking a sweet for a meeting, or being a guest reader in your child’s classroom. The Parents Association coordinates volunteers for many of these programs. W encourage Dad to get involved as well. The Dad’s
Club got out their tools this year and helped build play props and improve the campus. And, you don’t have to be a parent to help out; we love our grandparents who volunteer their time! The administration also has a number of opportunities for volunteer help ‐ such as assisting with school fundraising, marketing, and admissions! I n a ceremony held on Sunday, June 5, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and Day School broke ground on a $5 million renovation and construction project to
connect the church and school campuses plus expand and create facilities.
The “We Are One” project will create a campus green that will enclose Oxford Avenue, a street which currently divides the church and school parcels. The space will feature a pedestrian thoroughfare, covered walkways, benches, and a fountain, as well as improved traffic flow for school carpool pick‐up and drop‐off. Plans also include the construction of a new Commons Building at the day school that will have a commercial kitchen, performance stage, and space for physical education and indoor sports. Expanding the church’s chapel and refurbishment of its stained glass windows and parking facilities also will be performed during the construction.
The campus green and chapel expansion is expected to be completed by the fall, and the new facility will be dedicated in April 2012, a date coinciding with the
parish’s 90th anniversary celebration.
Even in the trying economic environment, the church and school have already raised $4.3 million in pledges of the $5 million goal. “This campaign has had incredible momentum from the beginning,” said George Egan, co‐chairman of the capital campaign. “Our church and day school make a big step into the future with these projects.”

Students made their “mark” on Clingman Hall as a way of saying goodbye to the building. Clingman Hall is currently being torn down during the summer and will be rebuilt this school year as an even bigger and better place to serve our students and community. During the end of the year parties, students were allowed to “decorate” the walls of Clingman Hall! They had a blast! (Pictured right) In early June, demolition began first by removing the Kindergarten Playground and then by constructing safety fences!
OUR VISION for the future of St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School
requires state‐of‐the‐art facilities which engage the latest technology and learning environments while enhancing the sense of community that is the foundation of the school’s daily life. A new multi‐purpose building will be the gathering place for lunch periods, weekly chapels, assemblies, physical education classes, and performances. Clingman Hall, the existing building for lunch and gatherings, has served us well for more than 30 years, but the building is now too small to accommodate our current student body and our 21st century curriculum. The current kitchen is too small, and the small gathering space requires three lunch periods. Finally, there is no performance space for the music and theatre productions. The new Commons Building will be larger, with seating capacity for 200 students during lunch and more than 350 for assemblies and performances. It will feature a large commercial kitchen which will enable us to provide healthier lunches for students and faculty. Other features of the building include a fully equipped performance stage and a faculty lounge.

T he Fruits of the Spirit Character Education Program was authored and developed by our Head of School, Cathy Hardage. It is now being used in a number of
schools in Florida and Texas. This program is ideally suited for an Episcopal school. Each of the nine fruits is assigned to a month of the school year. During Wednesday chapels, homilies about the fruits are presented to the students to complement the instruction in Christian education classes, and students receive awards. Some awards are voted on by the students, and some are chosen by the faculty. By the end of the year, every student will receive an award.
But the fruit of the Spirit is Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness,

Artwork by St. Mark’s Kindergartener Chosen as a Finalist in a National Ketchup Contest
Kevin M enjoyed time in the national spotlight as one of 36 finalists in the Heinz Ketchup Creativity Contest.
His artwork was selected to be one of three for his age category (kindergarten/first grade) to be voted on. While Kevin’s artwork did not receive the most votes during the final round, he was so excited to make it that far. Along with much attention at school and among family and friends, local media printed his name and picture in the papers, and he was a guest appearing on Saturday morning’s “Good Morning Jacksonville” First Coast News TV show. He was also honored in a local ceremony at Acosta Sales & Marketing (Heinz is a client), on May 12.
The contest winner’s artwork will be appearing on thousands of packets of ketchup as well as donations being made to the winner’s school’s art program.

St. Mark’s Student Selected to Promote Cross‐Cultural Friendship Entering sixth grader, Emilyn R, has been selected to represent the United States at a CISV Village held in France this summer. Her US delegation (two girls and two boys and an adult leader from Jacksonville) will attend the Village along with delegations from 11 other countries. At this four‐week multi‐cultural camp, the delegates will participate in a mix of educational, cultural and sport activities designed to stimulate interest and learning about other cultures and create lasting bonds of friendship among delegates of different countries. CISV, founded after World War II, is an independent, non‐political, worldwide volunteer organization promoting peace, education, and cross‐cultural friendship through programs for youth starting at age 11.

St. Mark’s Students Volunteer and Participate in a Benefit Horse Show
For the past seventeen years, a group of youth in Jacksonville has raised money to adopt local families in need at Christmas time. The youth raise the money, purchase the gifts, wrap the gifts, and deliver them to the families. This year, to raise even more funds for this cause, the youth held a horse show with all proceeds going towards adopting families.
St. Mark’s sixth graders, Dawson S and Frannie W, volunteered at the event, while third graders Lauryn B and Keller V participated in the show.
The show took place on April 2, at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center. Prizes for a drawing and for high points included a saddle donated by Windcatcher Ranch, a belt buckle donated by Windemere Equestrian Center, halters with mathching leads from Sun Horse Tack, and horse grooming products.

2002 John Wikstrom has written a script which won a Sprite film contest. He won several rounds of a nationwide text‐voting
campaign, and judging by notable film critics. His film will be featured at the L.A. Film Festival! Actor, Donald Faison, (starred as Dr. Christopher Turk on the Emmy‐nominated hit series Scrubs) stars in his film.
1991 Katie Von Herrmann Yoder is a M.D. with a Family Practice at St. Luke’s Hospital. She is also a medical advice columnist for the Florida Times Union and is expecting her first child.
2004 Charlie Berg is attending Sewanee: The Univ. of the South, studying economics. He is a volunteer firefighter and also a Coast Guard Licensed Captain, teaching the boating safety course at The Florida Yacht Club this summer.

Our alums are STATE CHAMPIONS! Mead Rogers, Alex Shapiro, and Savannah Blitch rowed in Episcopal’s Women’s Freshman 8 boat and won first place in the State! Other alums who rowed at States in Sarasota as well include, Gracie Hamilton, Chip Morgan, and Talbot White.
2005 William Leeser, coxswain for the Bolles Crew Boys Varsity Four, took second place at the Southeast Regional Youth Rowing Championships on May 15. The results earned the crew an automatic bid to the US Rowing Youth Invitational National Championships in Oak Ridge, TN.
2006 Kayla Henrichson and Bogan Huntley, juniors at Bolles, traveled to the Dominican Republic during spring break to help orphans.
John Jonas, a junior at Bolles, has verbally committed to continue his academic and athletic career playing golf at Louisana State University. He helped Bolles to a state runner‐up finish in 2010 and earned Second Team All‐First Coast honors this season.
Glory Scheel, was inducted into The Phoenix Society on May 12. This is an honor arts component of the Fine & Performing Arts department that recognizes students who excel in more than one art at The Bolles School. Members show a commitment to the demands of artistic vision, a delight in the process of creative discovery, and gratefulness and humility in the face of achievement.
Carlton Middlekauff participated in the 2011 Congressional Arts Competition sponsored locally by Congressman Ander Crenshaw. The purpose of the annual competition is to
showcase the creative talents of students and acknowledge our nation’s gifted young artists.
Murphy Williams received The Margaret Winters Buck Christian Service Award, given to the senior at Episcopal whose activities on behalf of others are so outstanding they warrant special recognition. She has been a passionate leader of the Community Service Council, instrumental in raising money for the American Cancer Society, was President of PRISM (People Rising in Support of Multiculturalism), and an integral part of work with orphanages in the Dominican Republic.
Emily Smithwick, received The Stanford University Book Award which is presented to the Episcopal junior who best exemplifies the classical dictum of a “sound mind in a sound body” by excelling in both academics and interscholastic athletics.
2007 Phoebe Stephens, Gray Houston, and Michael Pentalari were selected to be accepted into the prestigious Joe Berg Seminars. Participants are nominated by their high schools during their sophomore year, based upon GPA and demonstrated interest in enrichment. They then sit for a rigorous exam in either the sciences or humanities. About 50 students from
Jacksonville public and private schools are admitted.
2010 Harry D’Agostino won FIRST PLACE in the World of Nations Essay Contest. The prompt was “If I could live in any country in the world, I would live ___ , and why.” Harry picked Mexico. Essays were 150 words and were judged based on creativity, grammar, and how well the essay answered the essay prompt.
2008 Jack Stephens, a Freshman at Episcopal, is the Secretary of the Senate and was Class President last year.
2009 Boone Givens was among 25 of the top middle school players selected to represent the southeast region at the National All Star Lacrosse Academy in Maryland, July 1‐4.
Rani Mahmoudi has made the honor roll every quarter at Darnell‐Cookman Middle School. He also went to the Regional Science Fair for the Jr. division and is a member of the National Jr. Honor Society.
