This is the Year of ShemaRabbi Heidi M. Cohen

Shema, the most basic yet complex prayer in our tradition. Six simple words that evoke emotion and questions. Shema Yisrael ADONAI Eloheinu, ADONAI Echad - Listen/Hear O Israel, ADONAI is our God, ADONAI is One. (Deuteronomy 6:4)

These words are one of the first prayers we learn as youth or when we enter Judaism. We recite them when we wake up in the morning, go to bed at night and the moments before we die. Moses recited these words to the Israelites as he prepared them to enter Israel. We recite the Shema in every service and before we read Torah. Historically, the Shema was recited during the gravest situations, from the time of the Romans to the Inquisition to the Holocaust. It has the power to evoke joy and bring comfort in times of need. Six words so powerful for the individual and for the community.

Like the shofar we hear at Rosh Hashanah, the Shema is a wake-up call - a daily wake up call! But unlike the shofar which is meant to wake up the entire community, the Shema is meant to wake up the individual. It is time for us to pay attention to our lives. We need to be present to listen to each moment and the truth that is that moment. It is a wake up call for us to understand that there is a purpose to our lives and we need to be constantly evaluating how we are living every day.

The Shema is a connector - it connects us to every facet of our life and to the Jewish people. Our lives are connected through family, work, school, extracurricular activities and hobbies. The Shema is what brings each of these together and connects the individual to the Jewish people and Israel. In all that we do we give a piece of ourselves to that endeavor, yet at the same time, we collect pieces of others along the way. While the Shema is a very personal prayer, it is also meant to bind us all together as one people.

Being Jewish is about being a part of Jewish life through attending Shabbat and holiday services, learning through religious school and adult education and acts of tikkun olam (repairing the world). Judaism is more importantly a personal commitment to a covenant made between us and God, whether we were brought into the covenant at birth or we entered into it later in life. It is the responsibility of each individual to own his or her own Judaism. We close our eyes when we recite the Shema to not only remove all distractions but to allow us as the individual to fully embrace this affirmation. No one can do Judaism for us - we must do it and create it for ourselves.

As we will discuss in the weeks ahead, this is the year of Shema! This is the year for us to listen to each other, to God and most importantly, to ourselves. For the past couple of years, our focus has been recovering, rebuilding and returning to our campus. We spent much time on the physical connections through our new facility and have been blessed to reconnect in our own sacred space. Now is the time for us to redefine and discover connections as a Jewish community. I was recently asked, ‘what is your why?’ What an amazing question! When I tried to answer it, I found myself delving into the ‘what’ and not able to articulate the ‘why’ as quickly.

This is the year for us to discover our ‘why’ as a Jewish community and as individuals. ‘Why are we a part of our Jewish community?’ ‘Why are we Jewish?’

The best way for us to discover this is to, Shema! Listen! I challenge each of us to ask ourselves, ‘why’ and then share these ‘whys.’ Shema is not a silent prayer. It is said in a loud clear voice by each individual. In order to listen, there must be something to be heard. Together, if we listen and if we share, we will shape our community into one that is relevant and connected. We cannot wait for someone to do Jewish for us, this is our task. This is the covenant we chose to be a part of and this is a commitment we make for today and future generations.

Shema Yisrael, Listen Israel - this is your wake-up call to discover your ‘why’ and together we can be and we will be one.

L’Shanah Tovah

Tekiah: The Call and the AnswerCantor David E. Reinwald

When the shofar is sounded, what do you hear? Does it connect you to high holiday seasons of the past? Does it bring clarity to your mind to envision how you will better your life for the future? The sounding of the shofar is something we expect every single Rosh Hashanah, and yet it is a foreign presence to our ears, hearing its loud, jolting sound but once a year. It is a call to action, but we must, ourselves, then act to bring about the personal change we wish to make and want to see.

The sounding of the shofar is described in the prayer Unetaneh Tokef, repeated in every morning service of our high holidays. In a way, this is the most essential and important prayer of these days, unique to this time of year and the prayer repeated the most. It notes that the shofar is sounded, but does not end there -- it then states ‘the still, small voice’ is heard. What is fit referring to, and how do we hear this ‘still, small voice?’

Some of you may be like me - I pride myself on my ability to read my own intuition, to know when something is right or wrong for me. I always trust my heart and soul, my gut reaction and feeling. Is this part of the ‘still, small voice?’ Or, is it a familiar voice, not unlike the voice we think, speak, or sing with, and yet whenever we hear ourselves recorded, we sometimes respond, “Is that ME?” How we present ourselves to ourselves is different than we may be perceived by others, and if we can hone into that ‘still, small voice,’ we can learn something personally that may otherwise be hidden. It takes strength and conviction to look at our lives, past, present, and future, with a critical eye. And, yet, that should be the very essence of the month of Elul and the High Holidays.

The still, small voice may be encouraging us to take one small step forward and out of our comfort zone to try to reach new truths and understandings, new heights of exploration, and ultimately, new milestones in our lives. Listening to that voice may be like listening to a new piece of music. Our first reaction may be our gut feeling of like or dislike. However, I always encourage those I teach to listen critically to music, not with musical taste as their first perception, but with an ear to the purpose of the music itself. What is the tone set by the composer to ultimately convey meaning through their art? When we approach music in this way, it is like studying Torah. We may or may not like or even agree with the message, but we can walk away enlightened every single time.

I hope that this high holiday season is one in which you will find new meaning -- in the strong sound of the shofar and in the still, small voice.

L’shanah Tovah Tikateivu.

Return, Renew and RepeatBy Jodi Kaufman, RJE | Director of Congregational Learning

I love a good midrash. Who doesn’t love a good story? I especially like midrashim about our prayers. They help me connect on a deeper level to the words on the page of the prayer book. Shema. Listen. Here is one of my favorites.

Jacob, also known as Israel, was an old man when he and his children left Canaan and settled in Egypt, a foreign land filled with people who worshipped differently, who worshipped idols, who did not believe in one God. As the years went on, Jacob got older and weaker. He gathered his children around him while on his death bed and said, “I am afraid to die.” His children replied, “There is no reason to fear death father. God loves you.” Jacob answered, “No. I am not afraid of dying. I am afraid of leaving you alone in Egypt with all those temptations to worship other gods. I am afraid that when I am gone you will forget the one God, the God who spoke to Abraham, to Isaac and to me.”

His children then answered together in a loud voice, “Shema Yisrael (Listen Dad). Adonai Eloheinu (Adonai is our God). Adonai Echad (Adonai is One.)” (Deuteronomy 6:4)

Then, with his last breath, Jacob answered, Baruch Shem (Praised be God), k’vod malchuto l’olam va’ed (Whose glorious empire will last forever.)”

When we recite the Shema and whisper Baruch Shem k’vod malchuto l’olam va’ed, we are reenacting this story. (Pesachim 56a)

The “One” in this story has a different meaning. In this midrash we are talking about the continuity between generations, the one thing that makes us one. We continue to be one people – L’dor va’dor- from generation to generation. There may be conflict amongst the generations, different music, different fashion, use of technology. But there are also things that are true from one generation to the next. These are the things we want passed down to our kids and our grandkids. Our values, our history, our traditions. This is the “oneness” we share. These are the things that are one between us.

In the midrash, Jacob is concerned that his children will forget what makes them one. He is afraid to leave them in a land filled with other “ones”. He hopes he has done his job instilling in them the Jewish values and traditions that make them one people. Jacob wants to make sure his children have heard him.

We hear these words all the time, “When I was your age…”, “In my day…”. As if to say that we are worried that the next generation has lost a bit of their work ethic, their values, their priorities. But with new times, new technology and new ideas, comes a different work ethic, new values and new priorities. Not better or worse, just new. We must embrace this newness and incorporate it into what makes us one. We must listen and learn and grow and change while also holding on to the unique things that make us one.

Jewish Studies for K-6th GradersSundays | 9:30 am - Noon | TBS

Our Jewish Studies sessions allow students to engage in deep learning in a fun and creative setting. We use art, drama, music, technology, and movement to bring Jewish texts, traditions, and ideas to life. Each Sunday our school engages in music and prayer with our clergy. Every grade participates in our Shabbat evening worship once a year during our family service, each first Friday of the month.

Traditional Hebrew School for 3rd-6th GradersTuesdays | 4:15 - 6:15 pm | TBS

At TBS, we teach students Hebrew through an individualized grade level program called Kavanah Corner. These individual packets allow for flexibility within our Hebrew curriculum. The interactive student website allows students to practice their prayers wherever they might be. The technology component allows our students to engage in Hebrew instruction and practice at home. With our small class sizes, our teachers are able to give individual attention to students.

Hebrew Connection for 3rd-6th GradersFamilies may choose to enroll their child in our nationally recognized Hebrew Connection program, where a private tutor meets at the students’ home each week for one-on-one instruction.

7th Grade/B’nai Mitzvah ClassTuesdays & Select Sundays | 4:15 - 6:15 pm | TBSInstructors: Rabbi Cohen and Cantor Reinwald

On select Sunday mornings, the 7th graders meet with Rabbi Cohen to explore what it means to be a Jewish adult, tackling issues from keeping kosher to observing Shabbat. The B’nai Mitzvah class is enhanced by a series of family programs and a special 7th Grade Retreat. On Tuesday afternoons our 7th graders learn trope and participate in a variety of classes such as cooking with Rabbi Cohen and video production with Cantor Reinwald.

8th, 9th, 11th and 12th Grade Teen Kehillah ProgramSelect Sundays | Noon - 2:00 pm | TBS

Temple Beth Sholom’s Teen Kehillah is built on the principle that every event and activity, whether in the classroom or not, should advance a certain set of common Jewish values. Each element of our teen program emphasizes some or all of these core values and complements and builds on other elements in a cohesive and cumulative way. All events and activities lead to our goal of nurturing Jewishly identified people of integrity.

10th Grade ConfirmationSelect Sundays | Noon - 2:00 pm | TBSInstructor: Rabbi Heidi Cohen

In Confirmation, students attend on select Sundays afternoons (see schedule & calendar).   Confirmation students have an opportunity to reflect on their own Jewish identities and confirm their commitment to Jewish life.  Along with the Confirmation class, which is taught by Senior staff, students participate in a TBS Confirmation trip and lead the congregation in a Confirmation ceremony.  Throughout the year, students will wrestle with foundational questions, such as:  Who or what is God?  How can Judaism guide my understandings on modern, often controversial topics?  How can I live an ethical life? Why and how do we pray? How can I affect change in the world? 10th Grade Confirmation is a part of our TBS Teen program and includes the Confirmation retreat.

Shema – ListenPam Ranta | Director, Early Childhood Center

Listen to the almost silent beating of wings To the quiet buzzing of a bee moving from flower to flower, bringing new life to nature, preparing sweet honey. Birds soaring high, searching for a meal and a fertile place to rest from flight Chirping, cawing, squawking, hooting

Listen to the wind, wafting between the branches of the stately old tree, gliding along the sails of a ship at sea, beating on the roof tops Carrying all that is ready to move: waiting to catch a ride

Listen to the heartbeat of the unborn child snuggled in her mother’s life sustaining womb First experiencing existence from within the protective walls, nurturing body and soul Muffled voices, swaying to the maternal rhythm

Listen to the silence, listen to your heart, listen to earth’s pulse, listen to the water, listen to nature, listen to the animals

Listen to humankind

Hear God

We stand on holy ground and are surrounded by all that is holy. The world, filled with miracles and wonders, mysteries and understandings, great joys and great sorrows are easily overlooked in the bustle of our everyday lives.

We focus on what is in front of us, what has passed, what we long for. We rush from place to place, swept up in the race. The race to complete a task, the race to be better, the race to win. Do we take time to truly relate to those so meaningful in our lives? Do we feel fulfilled? Do we feel? Do we take the time to pause, to breathe, to see, to listen?

For those of us fortunate enough to play with, learn from and guide young children the words pause, reflect, seek, see and listen are a vibrant part of our day. Children exemplify the everyday miracles of our world but we must actively listen to bear witness. A child’s patient observation of a bug, viewed differently each time it is gazed upon; the struggle for self-expression with or without words; the picture drawn by a child, so telling and yet layer upon layer must be unraveled to comprehend the thought being so mindfully communicated. The world seen through the eyes of a child filled with the magic that we would otherwise forget to see.

An infant’s cry, more than a cry, a language. A language known only to the parent and caregiver who observes and listens intently to the tonal variations signifying the need to eat, to sleep, requiring a diaper change or even express discontent. Nature has a way of communicating with us as well. The sky turns black before a thunderstorm, plants wilt without sufficient water, insect’s surface when the ground is flooded or too hot. When we listen, we hear our own bodies telling us what we refuse or don’t want to see - age, illness, our heart, our conscious, knowing the “right thing”.

Pause, breathe, listen, reflect, feel the rhythm that weaves the strands connecting all life.

Listen and see God’s wonder.

PARTICIPATE IN SYNAGOGUE LIFESynagogue life is about building relationships

both within the congregation and for the

greater good of the community. At TBS, there

are numerous opportunities for Tikkun Olam,

repairing our world through social action

projects. You can also find life-long friendships

and build strong supportive connections within

our community. Here are some ways that you

can be involved and make these connections.

The Action in Social ActionSocial Action at Temple Beth Sholom offers our members a way to reach out into the community through the ideal of “tzedakah”. Some of our projects include Adopt a Social Worker and Mitzvah Meals. This year we are looking forward to partnering with local organizations to make a difference in the lives of those in need. There will be opportunities for everyone.

Contact: Cindy Grossberg at [email protected]

Mitzvah Meals - Every SundayIt started with a congregant’s vision and now, six years later, we feed 2,000 people a month. Through the generosity of our supporters and our volunteers, we provide a much-needed service to many shelters and soup kitchens.

To learn more and sign up contact: Hollis O’Brien at [email protected] or Cheryl Escoe at [email protected].

Special Needs NetworkThe Special Needs Network (SNN) at Temple Beth Sholom is organized as an outreach and support for both the family and the member with special needs. We provide assistance with inclusion for members to participate in all spiritual, educational, celebratory and life event activities at the synagogue. We are concerned with acceptance and appreciate differences. We provide special needs awareness to synagogue members through education, communication, and a positive attitude. The Special Needs Network group includes people who are also professionals dealing with special needs such as psychologist/lawyers/social workers. These professionals have been helpful in providing guidance and advocacy.

Activities are planned to include the entire family throughout the year. Some of our family activities include a Hanukkah Mitzvah potluck/gift wrapping, family Passover seder, social gathering. For more information, please contact Susan Sherman at [email protected].

ChavurahA community within a community, Chavurah (Hebrew word for “friendship group”) is a special program which enables the members of our congregation to get acquainted in smaller, more intimate friendship groups based upon compatible needs and interests. The Chavurah program is available to members of Temple Beth Sholom and provides a wonderful way to get to know others and to build lasting friendships with fellow synagogue members.
